We were inseparable from the moment we met, but it only took one night to destroy it all. Lies were spoken, truths were revealed, and mistakes were made.
For years, I took that anger out in the ring, but no matter how much time has passed, I still love to hate her… even when she storms back into my life almost a decade later.
But when I see the fear hiding behind her captivating brown eyes, I’ll fight to make her safe again. Then I won’t ever let her go.

The Guarding Her series contains adult content and is intended for readers 18+. Each book can be read as a standalone.
The first time Anna tried to read a romance novel, her hair caught on fire when she leaned over a candle to sneak a peek at her mom’s Harlequin. She thinks being hit on the head with a shirtless Fabio until the smoke cleared is what sparked the flame for her love of romance. Anna was born in Wisconsin, but currently lives in Texas with her husband and two boys. She writes sexy romance that always has a happy ending and loves bringing characters back for cameos. Less than six degrees of separation connects any of her novels. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s watching reruns of her favorite romcoms, talking to her dog and cat like they’re human, eating carbs, or practicing hand lettering. She loves to hear from readers and can be found on social media as @annabrooksauth everywhere.
Thank the heavens i got this one for free, because it’s NOT my kind of story,AT ALL!! Having said that,i’m proud i managed to finish it….but sad at the same time. Because i could’ve spent that time reading a story i KNOW i will enjoy…. Oh,well….lesson learned i guess.
If your going to write about rape, warn your readers!!!
I really don't know how this got 5 stars. I'm so so disappointed! SPOILERS AHEAD: I Have to warn readers. Why do authors have to ruin a good book by trying to put a twist in it just becuse they want shock and aww! Through the whole book, you think Mateo is Gio's child, but he's not. Viper sneaks into her apartment and rapes her! She thought it was Gio because viper shaved his head like Gio's. Whitney is a complete idiot if she couldn't tell the man in her bed wasn't Gio. Why would an author make a really mean and evil person like Viper the father of Whitney's child and not Gio's. Why can't an author write a book about the H and h have a baby together? Why did Ms. Brooks have to put rape in a book? I'm so sick of not being warned about sexual assult being in a book. I don't want to read about it. I' m also sick of the single mom & single dad books. Do authors think it's origional? It's not just this author it's almost every author. I have nothing against single parents, i have a lot of friends who are single parents. Romance novels are supposed to be just that, ROMANCE NOT RAPE. Romance novels are my getaway from my busy hectic life and this book was far from ramantic. I'm just glad it was a KU book.
I loved this story. I got it early on IBooks because I couldn't wait for Amazon! Gio and Whitney were great together. I love this series that she has going. There are some harsh descriptions of events, but the characters are so good, it's worth it. This was a 5* read for me. I can't wait for the next one!
My favorite theme is friends to lovers, I don’t know what it is but I just freaking love the whole concept. The fighting of feelings, the fear the friendship might end if things don’t work out, the idea that he/she doesn’t feel the same….. it’s just my absolute favorite. Not everybody gets it right, but Anna Brooks most certainly did with Closer.
Gio and Whitney, well, more Gio than Whitney fought their feelings when they were younger and really feared for the friendship. To the point, where a HUGE misunderstanding and horrible event took her away from him. She left believing she was doing the right thing and Gio makes the wrong move by letting her go. But when circumstances bring her back into his life, he will stop at nothing to get her back and make her his.
I have really enjoyed this series and its characters and Gio and Whit were such a great addition to the team. This was a great story with a shocking twist and with just the right amount of angst and the perfect ending. Thank you, Ms. Brooks for another enjoyable read!
“He continues breaking my heart a little more, but not because of him being with other girls. I already put the cement around it when it comes to that. I was used to it. No, he’s breaking my heart because he’s telling me all the things I wish he would have told me eight years ago.”
Gio and Whitney were best friends. And as in every classic romance story between friends, they love each other in secret, until the combination - celebration, drink and misunderstanding - ends up causing Whitney to leave and never talk to Gio again. Almost a decade later, Gio happens to see the woman he has never forgotten and still loves. Whitney has just returned to her old town and is already dealing with old problems. Her ex, Perry, has just disrespected the restraining order and is causing a scene at her workplace. The last person she expected to meet at the moment is the person from whom she spent so much time running away - Gio. And with the rapprochement of these two after so many years, the weight of so many unspoken things will pave their way, as well as various secrets and new threats. Gio's protective instinct will be put to the test and Whitney will discover that nothing she imagined was what it's looked like. Is it possible after so many years and so much baggage between them, this relationship work? Unfortunately I did not love the book. Gio was the best part of the narrative, despite finding the first chapter, where he recognizes her by the laughter after ten years surreal. I have the perfect notion that it is a novel and therefore full of clichés, but in this case this sudden love after years did not convince me. The plot was treading an interesting path, but the Viper story, Matthew, and what actually happened that night made no sense to me. The story turned the focus entirely. It is unbelievable to me that Whitney did not know who she was with at that fateful moment. Impossible to believe, at least. And what to talk about Whitney .... I'm sorry, I didn't like her. Her departure, her isolation from Gio's family and himself, the whole story of keeping Matthew a secret (in fact her justifications were the deciding factor for me to detest her) have shown that she is the great selfish of the story. Gio went without her friend, did not understand what happened all this time and even so when he sees her again, he will help her because he realizes that she is in trouble. He was lovely. She, detestable. For me it left to be desired, since the romance in fact I only saw through Gio. Whitney ran away, lied, arranged another boyfriend while proclaiming that she still loved Gio and accepted Gio's help and protection while lying to him in the week they spent together. Not even what happened to her managed to make me sympathize with the girl. Noble caught my attention, I intend to read the next book. Closer left to be desired in a series with ups and downs.
Closer by Anna Brooks is the fourth book in the Guarding Her series and was soooo good! This book can be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend reading the other books as well. Gio and Whitney’s journey isn’t an easy one-filled with regrets, pain, and mistakes. But it is also full of forgiveness and friendship and love.
Whitney didn’t have it easy growing up. She basically raised herself and found out the hard way about trusting the wrong people. Well when she meets Gio at the age of 19, they hit it off and become best friends instantly. That is until she starts falling for him. Gio though, is hesitant in starting anything with her. They go their separate ways and now 8 years later, they find each other and start falling back into the same routine. Trouble is neither one are prepared for the shock of their lives...can they handle the truth when it comes out?
I adored this story! Anna Brooks continues to amaze me with her writing. Her stories all always some of my absolute favorites. Closer is well written and has characters that are relatable and have depth. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
What a great second chance at love! Whitney and Gio were inseparable, right up until Whitney left town years ago with no explanation. Gio lost his best friend and the girl he silently loved. Now he's seeing her for the first time and she's in danger. He can't help himself-she may have broken his heart but if she's in trouble he's going to be there for her.
Whitney had her reasons for leaving and when she came back to town she knew it was a matter of time until she ran into Gio again. She didn't expect it to be when she was in danger from a crazy ex. But now that Gio is back in her life, she's found peace again.
These books have become some of my favorites! Bodyguards are just hot. They are so alpha and wanting to protect what's theirs! I love them! I had been waiting to hear more about Gio and Whitney and they did not disappoint! I always love a good friends-to-lovers book and this one was awesome!!! Love this author! Can't wait to read more from her!
Title: Closer (Guarding Her #4) Author: Anna Brooks Genre: Contemporary Romance Rating: 4/5
Another fabulous instalment from Anna Brooks Guarding Her series, a series surrounding the lives of hot, hunky alpha-males and the women who capture their hearts.
This time it’s the story of Gio and Whitney who since the moment they’d met where best friends, inseparable right up until one particular night set to tear them apart which was sealed with a badly timed text message the following day resulting in Whitney leaving town. Gio never forgot about the girl that got away, fast forward eight years and Whitney’s back but not without a few problems and she’s not alone.
After Gio comes to Whitney’s rescue the pair start spending more time together, becoming inseparable and declaring their love for one another but Whitney’s been keeping a big secret from Gio, one that he may never be able to forgive her for.... When secrets are revealed and then past revelations come back to haunt them will they recover together or be torn apart for good?
Ms Brooks has done it again, she’s given us another great book where the main protagonists just hooked you from the get go, we also get glimpses of characters from previous books in the series some old and new, it felt like being back with the family I loved the banter between these characters, it just flows naturally.
I really can’t wait for the next instalment in the series, Gio was an amazing "hero" hot, sexy and what a mouth he had on him, the challenge is on, will Brooks be able to top him? THE WAIT IS ON.
Giovanni Antonetti finally bumps into his best friend again after not hearing a word from her in 10 years. But now she is in trouble and Gio will due whatever it takes to keep her safe.
Whitney Shae has just left an abusive relationship with a man named Perry and she knows she needs to return to her hometown in order to be safe. Yet she is not expecting to have to rely on Gio to keep her safe after walking away 10 years ago.
When Gio and Whitney finally talk about the past will the realize the mistakes that were made and will they be able to move on?
This was such a good book and I loved some of the surprise twists that were thrown in!!
Gio was such a great character and I completely understood why he was so confused about why Whitney left. When we are introduced to Mateo things began to make a little bit more sense but then something still seemed completely off with the way things were being portrayed and Gio's character.
Whitney made some wrong choices, especially getting involved with Perry but she knew she had to be safe. I was kind of confused as things started going on with Gio in regards to Mateo and how everyone was on different pages but then when everything clicked it was like OMG!
So I was totally not expecting the Mateo twist at all!! When the truth finally came out I was so sad for everyone involved with the time lost and the friendship that disappeared.
The end was so awesome and I was so happy for the extra measures that Gio took and I knew he would fight for Whitney with everything he had!!
I really hope the author writes more in this series!
First, I have to say that I love love love the Guarding Her series. It’s a regular on my reread rotation. If you’re put off by over the top, foul mouthed, possessive and protective alpha males, then this series probably will not be your cup of tea. But it sure is mine. Yes, they’re sometimes crude. Yes, they take protecting their women to the extreme. But they’re also loving and loyal, and willing to do whatever it takes to protect those they love.
Gio is no exception. He and Whitney were practically connected at the hip for years. Whitney was head over heels in love with him, but felt she was in the permanent friend zone. Gio was afraid to ruin what they had, so never acted on his love for her. Something happens and there was some miscommunication and assumptions made, and Whitney ran away for eight years. Foolish pride prevents Gio from running after her, and he wastes those years apart acting a fool chasing any female tail to numb the pain (in true idiot male fashion). Circumstances bring them back together, and the fire is instantaneous. These two were meant to be. I love their story. Billie and Carter are my #1 story, but Whit and Gio are right there too. There’s definitely some hotness, some laughter (these two are best of friends and know how to have a good time), some drama, and a whole family of side characters who are the best.
Oh, how I love a second chances story, especially when the main characters never stopped loving one another, even after so much hurt, pain, and presumed betrayal. We have that and more in Closer, Gio and Whitney's book in the Guarding Her series by Anna Brooks. Gio is a former champion MMA fighter who lost the love of his life via a text message. No explanation, no reasons, just a text and she was gone. They had 4 years together, but his pride and fear kept them from becoming more than best friends. Whitney has loved Gio since she was 18, and after four years as his friend, she leaves for nearly 9 years after a misunderstanding. When she returns to her hometown, broken and running scared, Gio is the first person she sees while being harrassed by an abusive ex at her place of work. Gio lets her know that she has a lot to answer for, but no one will ever hurt her on his watch. He's ready to fight for what he's always desired, and that means he wants it all! So many intense scenes between Gio and Whit, a pulse pounding plot filled with heartbreak and suspense, and some twists that you never see coming!!!
Closer is the fourth book in the Guarding Her Series and is Gio & Whitney’s story. I now know how Closer the title of this book got its name! This is a second chance & friends to lover romance!
I love how each of the books in the Guarding Her Series can be read as a standalone but, it will enhance your reading if you start with the first book and read your way through the series!
Gio & Whitney were best friends until the one night that broke them apart and Whitney left town. Whitney has a secret that is a twist to their story when she returns 8 years later to her home town.
I said earlier that Whitney has a secret only what she thought the secret was, wasn’t what she thought it was. That is one of the twists in this story that was a surprise for everyone including Whitney. It wasn’t a good surprise either.
Closer was stimulating, surprising, suspenseful, steamy & superb!
I hope you can tell that I enjoyed this book and the series as well!
Gio and Whitney were best friends and their feelings had evolved into something much deeper but they never said anything to the other as they would rather be friends than take the chance of destroying what they had. They didn’t think anything could cause a drift between them until that fateful night when a misunderstanding leads to Whitney leaving town with no further contact.
Gio has never forgotten Whitney and eight years later she is back in town. When he steps in to rescue her from a dangerous situation it is like they have never been apart, and the feelings are stronger than ever. Gio is not about to repeat the mistakes of the past but will he feel the same when her secret is revealed?
This is a friends to lovers story as they try to right the wrongs of the past. I loved the chemistry and banter between them and when you throw in some suspense, a couple twists and a lot of emotion this becomes a story you won’t be able to put down. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
OMFG I'M just Amazed at how splendidly Anna wrote this book. I'm wowed at how this book went from a second chance love story to SOOOOO MUCH MORE...
This book is Gio's book and this book is hands down the best in the series. I was glued from start to finish. Whitney is such an amazing heroine. She has been through the mill and back. Yet she is strong and untainted by what's happened to her.
The Story is gonna have you at the edge of your seat. This book is a Novella yes, but Holy Fucking Cow it packs a Punch. Shit the book is HOTTTTT, it's got amazing dialogue and the main characters chemistry is Rocking. The surprises and what the Fuck just happened scenes were things I didn't see coming at all.... I have to mention it was done so well. Nothing in this story or writing is fake. It's so real that there were many times I had a lump in my throat....
Don't be a fool and miss this book. Grab it now!!!!
I we given an arc ad am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is gio and Whitney's story and book 4 in. Series but can be read as a stand alone, however I would recommend reading the other books as the characters appear in other books and also s the timeframe overlapse. I
A really sexy second chance romance
I really enjoyed this book, the plot line was really good and well written and develops really well, there is twist that I didn't see coming at all! At first I thought this whole story we going to annoy me as it seemed to be based on miscommunication but it was so well done an I really liked it.
The characters develop well nd are both likeable, gio is strong and protective and really sweet with whitney, and Whitney is a good strong female lead who deals with things well and isn't over dramatic.
Spoke Really fun scenes and some sexy ones too.
(May contain triggers for sexual assult)
Really looking forward to the next book and am really enjoying this series
Closer by Anna Brooks is book 4 in the Guarding Her Series but can be read as a standalone. I really like her writing style. The reader gets captivated right from the start, and the next thing you know, the book is finished. I couldn’t put it down. This is a great series with strong characters and Closer has some twists and turns thrown in. It’s a friends to lovers story with a very swoon worthy male lead.
Gio and Whitney were best friends, but after a drunken night, and a mistake, Whitney leaves town. She returns 8 years later, and the sparks between them are still there. Gio is still protective of her, loves her and wants what is best for her. Gio is very domineering alpha male, however, the way he cares for Whitney melted my heart. There are some twists and turns that take you by surprise as you will not see them coming.
Gio vows to uncover her hidden secrets, and never let her go again. Follow their story in Closer. It is a must read book & series!
I really liked this book. I liked that Gio was a former MMA fighter and that Whitney and he used to be best friends. Their friendship is something to be jealous of. I especially loved the water fights they would have and those scenes always made me smile.
Whitney has a huge secret that we find out about halfway through the book. It's one I can't believe she kept, but once it's out in the open, things are okay. But then there's a bomb dropped that I did not see coming, that I don't think anyone will see coming, that just made my jaw drop.
I couldn't put this book down and actually growled when I had to put it down to go to work. I didn't want to be too far from my Kindle, because I wanted to take every chance that I had to read this. I actually really want to go back and read it again. It's a fun read, one that I won't forget, and one that I would recommend to everyone.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I loved Giovanni. The best friends to lovers and his alpha, man-whore ways definitely kept me hooked and finishing the book in two days.
While I wasn’t a big fan of Whitney and her choices at times, because I felt like she was immature and beat around the bush- she finally did come clean with Gio and they were able to work through it. The chemistry was definitely there and at times I thought I had it figured out, but Anna made it to where you were blindsided and had a what the hell just happened- I didn’t see that coming response. lol the drama was just enough, I loved the banter with the other characters we see from previous books and I know I need to read books 2 & 3 to get a glimpse of each person’s story.
This is another good addition to a terrific series. Gio and Whitney haven't seen each other in eight years because of a miscommunication - and what turns out to be so much more. I like both characters, who are each strong and stubborn. Gio is fearless and possessive, but his heart is good and belongs completely to Whitney. For her part, Whitney likes to think things through and make her decisions based on what is best for everyone involved. She is willing to make sacrifices for the good of those she loves. She's been in love with Gio since her teen years. There is a big twist in this story, which seems to come out of nowhere. The way it's handled fits with Gio's personality. I give the author credit for taking a common trope and turning it upside down. I'm really enjoying this series. Well done!
Two people fall in love then something happens and they go their own ways.
Thought the last book in this series was the best in the bunch. But Anna out did herself with this one. A young innocent girl is out in the world trying to live her life. She falls in love with a fighter but he doesn't give her the word's she wants to here, but she lives in hope of him showing her he feels the same about her,and when she's in bed one night and is woken by a man who pretends to be her desire and makes love to her from behind then leaves, she thinks all has changed for the better in her life but soon realizes she got it all wrong, and so she moves away. Over seven years later she moves back into the town with her son who looks just like his daddy? And this is where things change for ever. I hope you will read this book and enjoy it as much as I have.
AMAZING! What a great read! Seriously, I love this series, so glad I stumbled upon it in the beginning, this author just creates the best strong heroes and heroines. Gio is no exception, I've said from the start he's the one I've been most looking forward to and she did not disappoint. Twists and turns and surprises throughout. SO MUCH STEAM! Fogged up my Kindle lol. Oh so hot, though I would expect nothing less from Gio. They are so sweet together and funny. I really loved this book, so unpredictable, kept me turning the pages and kept me engaged as I tried to follow the story closely but even I did not see most of it coming. Nothing in this book I didn't like. I'm so looking forward to Noble's story as well. This author is now on my one-click list!
Every man in this series is even better than the last! Uber alpha, protective, sexy, and so freaking swoony! Closer is an epic second chance with some wonderful heat and twists that keep you glued to pages. It’s not often I’m truly surprised while reading, but Anna Brooks truly knows how to grab you and keep you hooked! I can’t say enough how much I love Gio. There was no wishy washy back and forth with his feelings. The second he saw Whitney it was clear the love he felt never left. Even with secrets between them these two had the kind of love that steals your breath and fills your heart. I don’t want to give anything away because part of what makes their story so awesome are the moments that have your jaw dropping, but you’re guaranteed plenty of sweet and plenty of heat with these two!
Closer by Anna Brooks is a friends to lovers, contemporary romance. Although it's book four in The Guarding Her Series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. I haven't read the previous books and did not feel like I had missed anything.
I really enjoyed Whitney and Gio's story. They were both very likeable characters with great chemistry. Their back-story hooked me from the beginning. As secrets were revealed, it kept me wanting more. There were plenty of twists and turns along the way, and some unexpected surprises too.
This was the first book that I've read by this author and I wasn't at all disappointed. I really enjoyed it! I plan to check out the rest of the series.
Closer by Anna Brooks is book 4 of the Guarding Her series. But can totally be read as a standalone. It’s a second chance romance told from duel POV and has a HEA.
I’ve not read this author before but now that I have finished this book, I can say that she definitely packs a punch and doesn’t hold anything back. All the characters are pretty great and I enjoyed getting to know them all.
Wow, some surprising and intense things occur during the course of this book. Just when you think you know what direction it’s going to take - bam! It takes you so,where completely different. It’ll bring out a whole range of emotions throughout the whole story.
Good story that I am guessing is from a good series.
Plenty of twists and turns, that I didn't even expect.
Gio and Whitney were best of friends, then one day she is gone. Gio is pissed. Whitney is sad and vulnerable, which leads her into the arms of the wrong man.
Years later, Whitney returns and turns Gio's world upside down. He still loves her, but wants to hate her. However, he will do anything to protect her.
There is plenty of surprises in this book, but I loved how it all came together. Everything gets explained and the two people who loved each other for over a decade get their happy ever after.
I love this series so much! Closer is book 4 but can be read as a standalone.
Whitney and Gio were best friends the moment they met. They were inseparable until that one night that tore them apart. Whitney left town and never looked back. Gio never forgot about Whitney though. Fast forward a few years later and he sees whitney back in town. After coming to her rescue from a crazy ex, the 2 start spending time together again and just like before, become inseparable. Whitney is hiding a huge secret though and is scared Gio may not be able to forgive her for it. Secrets from the past threaten to tear their future apart but can they overcome it?
OMFG I'M just Amazed at how splendidly Anna wrote this book. I'm wowed at how this book went from a second chance love story to SOOOOO MUCH MORE...
This book is Gio's book and this book is hands down the best in the series. I was glued from start to finish. Whitney is such an amazing heroine. She has been through the mill and back. Yet she is strong and untainted by what's happened to her.
