DNF because it's Clear Xena fanfiction. They barely even tried to change the story for the western theme. If I had known it before purchasing on amazon - I wouldn't have made the purchase.
Josie is a raven haired blue eyed beauty with a dark past. Rebecca is a blonde, innocent green eyed country girl who likes to talk and write. After being rescued from thugs by Josie, Rebecca follows the outlaw.
There's a lot of the typical 'didn't your mother ever tell you' and 'pick on someone your own size' quips familiar from the series as tough-nut Xena..I MEAN JOSIE fights bad guys on the trail, while the hapless yet excitable Gabrielle..I MEAN REBECCA fawns on-side.
When they get to a small town being targeted by outlaws and there's only innocent farmers who can't fight the bad-guys, of course Gab-I mean Rebecca talks Xen...Josie into defending the town for them.
At this point I decided to stop. If I wanted to watch an episode of Xena, I would do just that! If I wanted to read Xena fan-fiction - there's plenty online for free. (I never did like fanfiction though - sue me.)
I have no desire to pay good money ($10 USD) for fanfiction that directly copies characters and events, only barely changing the environment and some circumstances. I wanted a good lesbian western drama with an original premise. This wasn't that.

For some reason I'm having a hard time writing a review for this book, just that this is going into my faves pile. I loved the characters, the western setting, the chemistry between the leads. The love story grew organically, although boy was this such a slow burn.

I could not put this story down. Josie and Rebecca were polar opposites. Josie, an experienced outlaw who had zero time or patience for that matter for fragile, innocent little girls who didn't know how the real world worked. Rebecca, innocent and naïve as they come, rescued by the tall, dark, and fearsome outlaw, Rebecca knew she needed to prove to Josie that she was worth keeping around. After spending many days and nights together on the trail, the coldness around Josie's heart began to warm up and she started to see Rebecca in a new light.
This story kept me on edge, it even had me chuckling a few times. Some reviewers complained of it being too long with unnecessary scenes. I say, Hell-To-The-No, on that one! It was perfect.

Long and slow. Sooo long and so slow. Repetitive, as well. 3/4 of the book is a succession of (kind of) boring events with no real plot.
Way too corny. So corny it borders on ridiculous.
Incredibly stereotypical and manichean. Why can't I find a western story that doesn't depict people and situations in such unnuanced ways?
Rebecca is so clueless it's annoying. She is more unreasonable than she is brave. She cries way too much, and acts like a child during most of the book.
Josie is all right, she is sweet in the tough-butch-with-feelings kind of way, but there isn't that much to her, to be honest. I couldn't get past the age difference and the fact that their relationship is way too mother-daughter to be taken seriously. I really don't know why Josie would fall in love with someone as naive as Rebecca.
I guess what bothers me the most in this story is the lack of substance and the lack of feelings in the narration. It's like being told a story with no intonation. I hear the words, they make sense, but they only just scratch the surface of what they could convey.
I couldn't get into it. It took me hours to finish the first few chapters because I'd put the book down every few paragraphs I was so bored. But the rating was so high I kept trying and trying, hoping I'd find something exciting in the plot or in the characters, but nothing.

After this book, I have to admit that F/F Western is becoming my favorite sub-genre.
What a lovely book!
The setting is described very tastefully, the story is fascinating and the characters are interesting.
I loved Josie, the tough butch with a heart of gold.
Rebecca was very sweet and brave.
For me they were a match made in heaven, because they are so different and yet a perfect fit.
The romance slowly blossoms from friendship and companionship to love. And once the tension between the women increases the chemistry was of the charts. The intimate scenes are exciting, sexy en very satisfying.
Too bad that there are few books that are similar to this one.

Beautiful. Having seen some of the comments in here where others are complaining of no intrigue, book dragging on, I want to convey a fact: that stories, real stories about ordinary people are not always so adventurous, exciting, full of things they conquer to be together, rather than being a slow journey with meaningful conversations and moments of testing their resolve that turn into a beautiful story or love story. That's why I am giving it 5 stars because it resonates to me in a delightful way.

Xena Uber. Lesbian western is not my fave subgenre, that said I've read quite a few, including some fanfic. This is the bottom of the genre imo (This does not include simply awful writing). Well enough written, some incorrect words used if you want to get picky. I didn't find the story compelling enough and at times believable enough to give a higher rating. It does say something that I finished it, with it as long as it is.

It's a fantastic journey filled with adventures, excitement, dangers, and growth. Rebecca starts out open minded and eager, but naive and starry-eyed. Seeing the world, not just the beauties but also the darknesses, never dimmed her hope and optimism. But she matured, she found her own footing and place in the world, fighting for goodness not what society said was 'right'." Josie starts of closed minded and angry with the world, but still with a sense of the core of right vs wrong. She was hard and solitary, but was allowed the smallest spark of peace and happiness that Rebecca brought into her life to grow into a flame to begin trusting, to enjoy helping others, and to embrace friendship.

A longer tale than most of this genre, this story was still rich and full of dense content including great, descriptive character development, touching and comforting scenes, along with a story about two women finding love in the least likely place. I feel it could have ended in some places and been just as well off, but the additional storyline did not bore or make me wish for the end to be near. I have not been a fan of BL Miller before, but I could sense the works of Vada Foster within the pages immediately, and enjoyed the balance between the two authors. Overall, a great read.

I read this book on a recommendation for a protective MC. And Josie absolutely fits the mark. This was a very slow burn. And at times it might have felt too slow. But truly it was that I really just wanted to see them as a couple and not as friends. I was ready maybe a little bit before the author was. With that being said this book was still a great book. The story is filled with love and protectiveness. Adventure and suspense. The authors crafted an amazing story that truly drew me in. So glad I was able to read it.

When I saw a queer western story on the shelves I was so excited. I have a soft spot for westerns. After reading, I was disappointed.
For starters, this is an age-gap relationship. While that is not my personal preference, I don't usually have an issue with it. Except this story made it VERY weird. The older woman's POV keeps referring to the younger woman as "a child" "child like" "small" and "naieve". It just came off as creepy. The narrative makes it clear that both characters are over 18, but the younger woman is described as "looking closer to 16" or something similar. It made me incredibly uncomfortable.
I also noticed that overall, the writing was not great. The book felt more like I was reading a first draft as opposed to a published book. There were small continuity mistakes, as well as odd story beats.
The story itself also felt juvenile. Plot points and dialogue are simplistic and full of cliches.
I do not recommend this book. While the story has potential, they way it was done was not good.

Good tale, if slightly long, of an unlikely relationship between a young woman and a slightly older female outlaw in the Old West. While not high literature, Miller spins an imaginative and well written story that builds anticipation (will they or won't they?) to the point of exasperation (do it already!). While for the life of me I couldn't understand what a hardened outlaw would see in the pathetically clueless younger woman, their journey grew on me and made me want to find out what was going to happen. Some of the descriptions of both characters grew tiresome after a while too - a zillion mentions of piercing blue eyes and raven hair for instance. Ugh. In the end sweet and satisfying, this book also gets an "B+" grade for being a good lesbian western. And an R rating for a few explicitly sexy scenes - just a warning in case you don't like that kind of thing. ;)

One of my absolute favorites.. I love the characters and the story line is amazing. I wish there were more western themed books such as this. I have read this FIFTEEN TIMES!!!
