An exciting new series from New York Times Bestselling Author Dez Burke.
Several years before, Flint Mason committed the unthinkable, he left town and turned his back on his brothers and the Steel Infidels Motorcycle Club. When his best friend is murdered by a rival MC, he returns home determined to exact his own personal revenge.
Veterinarian Dr. Kendra Shaw has never ignored an animal in need. So when a call comes in about an injured eagle she doesn't think twice about going alone to a secluded cabin to meet the caller. What she finds there sets her on a shocking path she never imagined...
Flint and Kendra are forced together in a tense situation where neither wants to be. Flint knows a smart woman like Kendra would never fall for a man like him. Nothing more than common outlaw. A bad guy.
What they soon discover hidden behind their differences is a fiery passion that ignites and bursts into flames. Can they overcome their obstacles and fight for their love or will the grim reality of life in the MC destroy their chances forever? This story unfolds over two volumes, approximately 26,000 words each.
The book is only 97 pages and I really hate I paid 2.99 for it. It is a HUGE cliff hanger, stopping in the middle of a crisis. I mean like, the bad rival MC gang is ten minutes away coming to kill the H and the h throws the H the keys to her truck so they can escape. The H tells the h not to hesitate to shoot to kill the bad guys if they are caught. Hate, hate those kind of cliff hangers especially. The story has good potential and the author exhibited some good writing skills but let me list what makes this book incomplete to me (aside from the huge cliff hanger that the author fails to warn about in her book description) Why did Flint (H) leave his MC 10 years ago? Why is the rival MC gang trying to kill Flint? The H meets the h (a veterinarian) when she is lured to a cabin in the woods (the safe house) to treat Flint’s gunshot wound. She reluctantly does so and stays with him from Friday to Sunday after being promised the proceeds of the MC charity run and the money will go to her wild life rehabilitation center. H falls in love and starts saying the “mine forever” within 12 hours of being coherent with the h. This fall in love, sex and I want to marry you and your babies set a world record for me. This could have been a very good story with a little more effort to develop the characters, provide more information on why the H left the MC and why he has been targeted by the rival MC. And most of all, a little more time to develop a real love between the H and the h. Right now I’m mad about paying 2.99 for a cliff hanger since my New Year resolution was to stay away from cliff hangers until all the books are out. My bad, I should have researched it more. There are well established MC romance authors that offer really good full length books with the whole story for 2.99.
Update: This author took exception with my review over on Amazon. I would suggest that potential readers of this book review her response to an honest review.
Update: The author, Dez Burke, responded and said she did not post the reply to my Amazon review and that she has advised her followers to cease making any inflammatory comments on the book review thread on Amazon.
Safe House was the first book or prequel in the Steel Infidel MC series by Dez Burke. I read it as part of the Steel Infidels box set but have provided individual reviews as well.
Safe House was aptly named as you’ll discover early on and it covered a very short period of time. It also served as the introduction to the main storyline. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and having the stage set for the full story.
Flint was a public defender. He had a past in the Steel Infidel MC that he left behind several years ago. His best friend was murdered by a rival MC and he returned for revenge.
Kendra Shaw was a veterinarian. She was one of two in the county, well known and well respected. She also ran an animal rescue - her entire life was devoted to her animals.
Burke provided the introduction then left us with a little cliff hanger to complete the story in the next book, Liberated. I would have preferred the entire story in one book but it was well written and developed for the short story it was meant to be.
Flint Mason is the prodigal son of the Steel Infidels Motorcycle Club. Dr. Kendra Shaw is the veterinarian strong armed into helping them after an incident. Who would think sparks would fly between this unlikely pair?
Lately, I have become book obsessed by anything biker related. Another big chunk of my reading time is taken up with exploring the Interracial Romance sub-genre. When I saw this title combined both of my loves, it quickly trumped anything else on my to-read list. I have to say the concept was really good, but the execution was a little flawed. Unfortunately for me, the devil was in the details. Characterization issues kept removing me out of the storyline, and into my head. As an example, a big part of the plot is Kendra's practice depending on donations to stay afloat. She explains how she allowed her parents to get a second mortgage to finance it. Who would let their aging parents go into debt knowing funds would not be available replenish their nest egg? That did not make sense to me. Flint was already a shaky MC member, and talking crap about his club to a virtual stranger didn't raise his esteem in my eyes either. He also talks about being a tattoo artist, and suggests a really colorful one for her. This made me wonder about the color of her skin tone, and his skill level. Bright colored tattoos are almost out of the question for anyone with dark skin because it doesn't show through. Shouldn't he acknowledge that?
These are things the average person would have skimmed through. Unfortunately, these are kind of my book pet peeves, so it was impossible for me to ignore, and enjoy. I will admit the actual storyline is interesting enough to maybe give the next installment another try though.
I really like the cover of this book. I can't figure it out, but I saw it about a month ago and just had to read it. Didn't know what it was about, but just wanted it. When I got my review copy I was super excited and started reading it right away. So I'm relaxed and reading and can't wait for the conflict, for the actual story to begin... and just as it starts to get to the meat, it ends. Literally "The End." A friggin' cliffhanger!! I hate cliffhangers like you can't imagine, so I'm putting it out there so you know what to expect when you get all comfy on your bed, sofa, or whateva. You're gonna have to wait for the story to actually get started and you aren't going to be happy about it. But let's step back shall we. Did I like the book?
What it's about: Flint Mason is an attorney working as a public defender. He gets a call that has him returning home and back to the life of his old motorcycle club called the Steel Infidels. Our heroine is Kendra Shaw, a veterinarian who owns an animal clinic and wildlife sanctuary. Kendra is feisty and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She ends up having to spend a couple of days with Flint in which they get to know one another and fall into some serious at first sight I like/lust you a lot and need you bad baby feelings towards one another
This is pretty much all that you get. It's an introduction to Flint and Kendra and the MC club. You'll learn a bit of background on the characters and get a feeling of who they are or wish they were. There are some pretty dang smokin' sex scenes in there that'll set your e-reader ablaze, but once the juicy meaty stuff begins its over. Dez Burke ability to write doesn't disappoint, in fact I think she's improved from some of her earlier stuff that I've recently checked out. This book kept my attention and I like where it's going, but I would like for things to slow down a bit and for the story to fill out all of the questions and gaps that are left unanswered. The characters are committed to one another so quickly even though he's a member of a MC club and she's a vet. Wouldn't she be more hesitant? Concerned? Scared? So much opportunity for a story just glossed over in favor of a short read is disappointing. I also would have liked for the MC club to have been a little more hardcore, but what we get is motorcycle club light.
Sorry Ms. Burke, I like the concept of this book, but in all good consciousness I can't give this a five or even a four star review. It's too short for this intense like/lust/be mine thing to happen, especially between two people who are seemingly from two polar opposite worlds. They would need to get to know each other more than just one night. There are things that she needs to know about him. And the cliffhanger following a story that really was just prep for the real story was just not right. Authors please stop this trend. If your fans mean anything to you give them a full story arc in a book. Am I recommending it? Not necessarily. If you don't mind a short book that's only purpose is to prepare you for the actual story then I'd recommend. If you want a full storyline with conflict and resolution then this isn't it I'm afraid. I hope the next book is longer and more complete (and when it does I hope this one goes on sale for those who haven't read it by then).
I give this between a 2 and 2.5 stars
*I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*
I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. I received this book as a recommendation when I was cruising Amazon. However, my one-click finger got the better of me, and I found myself clicking. Little did I know that it was a HUGE cliffhanger!!
Can't an author just freakin' tell us it ends in a cliffhanger?!
Short, minimal character or relationship build up before the sexiness aka book porn starts. I enjoy mc reads and some suspension of belief is needed, however in this book with how short and how fast paced she moves her characters all thoughts of realism should be left at the door prior to reading. This could have been a good read had we had time to explore the characters and their lives before just throwing them together and "your my girl" forever and your my man!!! Blah Free read. I know saying this I'm going to kick myself but what got this story 2stars was the ending. I have to see if the Liberators get them I have to see if Kendra and Flint find their HEA... it's like watching a car wreck you just have to look!
OMG this book was sooooo good! This is the first installment of the Steel Infidels Biker MC series and I am in love with it already!! This first short part of the series was on point form the very beginning of the story to the very last sentence. In this installment we get introduce to the very sexy biker/attorney Flint and the sexy curvy veterinarian Kendra. Kendra was called out on a house call to come save animal but little did she know it wasn't an animal it was a human and very alpha male. This short story packs all the goods of a full length novel. It has action, some romance and the passion between the two is pure FIYAH!!! So hold on to your hat because you are in for a ride you won't forget. My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end!! Excellent Job Dez Burke and I can not wait for part two!!!
I was really getting into this book and then it ended right when it was starting to take off. I would have given it more that 2.5 stars if it hadn't ended when you started to really get to the couple, Flint and Kendra.
After receiving the news that his best friend has been murdered by a rival MC, Flint Mason, the prodigal son of the Motorcycle Club Steel Infidels, returns to the club to exact revenge. Kendra Shaw is a veterinarian who’s love for animals outweighs caution, so when she receives a mysterious call about an injured eagle she jumps at the opportunity by traveling to a secluded cabin in the mountains. However, instead of finding an eagle, she gets an eyeful of an injured Flint. Flint and Kendra are forced together in a tense situation where neither wants to be.
What they soon discover hidden behind their differences is a fiery passion that ignites and bursts into flames. Can they overcome their obstacles and fight for their love or will the grim reality of life in the MC destroy their chances forever?
♥♥♥
My expectations for this novella was awfully high, having recently gotten off of my SOA high and the cover being so magnetic – but sadly my expectations were extinguished after we’re introduced to Kendra. Her character is extremely preposterous and utterly unlikeable in my opinion, however I had faith that as the novel progressed my dislike would be reversed and turn into admiration or, at the very least, a tolerance but the length of this novella prevented that. My reasons for not liking Kendra stemmed from her behavior and actions, but this could have been forgiven…if she wasn’t a freaking doctor! But according to Kendra, “I’m a vet, not a doctor!” (WTF I know a few veterinarians and they all refer to themselves as doctors, well to people they don’t know) so that kind of sums up her stupidity, along with her having sex with a man she barley knows in a notorious motor cycle gang.
Which then leads me to Flint’s character – who I cannot take seriously after watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – who is this successful lawyer who drops everything to rejoin his legendary life of crime as a Steel Infidels. Perhaps it’s me not understanding the gravitational pull to the streets, or in this case the road, that prevents me from fully grasping the magnitude of his decisions. I mean he goes from being an outlaw, to the law, and then turns back to being an outlaw again; it could be me but that just seems so unstable and, therefore, makes an incomplete character when that wasn’t the intention. And then we have another story about lust at first sight that magically turns into love overnight, storyline that I’m fed up with reading. That being said, Flint’s still totally smoking hot and sexy in every way.
Finally we arrive at the root of the issue with this novella, which is…drum roll…it’s entirely too short. This novella comes to its cliff-hanger conclusion much to speedily for us because just as the ice cream cake is about to be sliced the knife just gets stuck (I’m sorry, that was just awful and the guilty party is: my sugar crazed mind). So to say this basically would be to say there wasn’t enough time for character development, therefore, once again, I’ve been burned by book longevity but since there’s a second book it gives me hope (FYI: hope = dangerous emotion for book readers)
This is such a good book, from beginning to end. In fact, I declare that this is the best work that Dez Bryant has written. Let me start with the she-ro. Kendra is an amazing character, funny, smart (the right kind of smart) and relatable. I love when a writer gets women right. Oh yeah, she’s a curvy girl as well that NEVER complain about her shape. Novels are written for the drama of the story, leaving the characters to fit into a specific mold. Too many females say that they are strong and tough, but end up making really dumb decisions. The kind that have me yelling at my book or deleting the book from my ipad before finishing cause I’m so fed up. But Kendra was great. She was smart, didn’t get bullied, and didn’t stand in her own way of finding love. Thanks Dez.
The Hero, Flint. Even his name is sexy. And those piercing green eyes…. Yeah, his picture was painted with the right amount of brush strokes.
The bad: I need more! My girl turns out to be ride or die chick, I need to find out more.
Fav line: "What? she said self-consciously. "Is something wrong" No, everything is perfect," Flint replied. "I'm memorizing how beautiful you look so I can sketch you later when I'm alone."
Overall: I would recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy an action packed story or an action packed romance. Or, an action packed romance with a LOT of love on a curvy woman.
The thing about people we look to as family is that not all are blood related. That is the way Flint, Jesse, and Sam look at the Steel Infidels Motorcycle Club. The MC were their brothers. They took them in when they needed a place to go. They would stand by them thru thick and thin. Thru the good and the bad. That is why you know it had to hurt when Flint had turned his back on the MC. Flint who is a bad boy is an interesting character. He left the MC and got as far away from them as he could. He had become a Public Defender, now tell me you did not chuckle at the thought of that. He was trying to make a good life for himself. After his best friend Tommy’s death he returned back to his brothers, his family, the MC. Fate has a way of bring people together that would of never met. Dr. Kendra Shaw who is a vet for the Shaw Vet Clinic and the Shaw Wildlife Center gets suckered in to the drama going on with the Steel Infidels MC and the Liberators. Flint needs a doctor under the radar. Who better the Dr. Shaw herself. Things get pretty hot and steamy with Flint and Kendra. Trust me it is a story that you will get hooked on and you so do not want to miss out on.
I was provided an ARC of Safe House to provide an honest review.
This is a great book one of a brand new series.
Flint and Kendra are forced together when Flint is in need of a doctor. However, Kendra is no doctor...she is a wildlife vet. Against her better judgement, Kendra agrees to treat Flint. Flint is part of the Steel Infidels Motorcycle Club. Not all of their dealings are exactly legal. Someone is out to get Flint and his family.
Kendra is no shrinking violet and decides to help Flint. She doesn't realize though that this could cost her more than she bargained for.....her heart.
I am looking forward to book 2 and it can not get here soon enough. I highly recommend one clicking this book as soon as possible. I will warn you though, the book ends in a cliff hanger.
If you want a hot sexy read this is the book for you! The build up and attraction is quick, so be prepared that this is not a story you try to rationalize, it's a story you enjoy. The main characters Flint and Kendra have amazing chemistry that seems to sizzle off the page. The love scenes are hot, hot, hot! Thank you Dez for the shower scene!
I love that while Kendra was a normal curvy woman and Flint was ridiculously hot their pairing didn't seem unrealistic. You felt these two people could be together under normal circumstances. Flint is a good man in a bad situation and Kendra is a smart, normal woman who needs her life shaken up a bit.
This is well written and gets straight to the point of what it is meant to be. It's about how no matter how different you are there is no fighting pure unadulterated attraction and this book tells that story well.
This was a great ready by author Dez Burke. I enjoy all of her writings and look forward to new ones when they come out. The read was fast paced and exciting. Kendra is a veterinarian who is called to a cabin on the false pretense of an animal being hurt. Once she arrives, she finds out that Flint, who is part of a motorcycle club has been shot and needs her help. They are both likable characters that had almost instance attraction and that attraction progressed rather quickly (I love getting to the point in a book). The book did end in a cliff hanger, but that makes me that much more anxious for the follow-up. We recommend this book be added to your collection.
Kendra is a small town vet satisfied with her life. Former Public Defender Flint returns home when tragedy strikes. He picks ups his leathers and returns to Steel Infidels Biker Club to help with a rival club. They are thrown together by unlikely circumstances which changes both their lives.
This is the first story in the series which ends on a cliff hanger. I don't mind series novels, but prefer each story to feature one couple, finish their story then introduce the next couple. It is disappointing to wait for the next installment for the conclusion, IMHO.
I haven't decided if the next book is a definite purchase.
Enjoyed the read but I still don't understand why Flint left his life behind to pretty much become a criminal. If he was as good as he claimed he could've easily made more money in the same field. I don't understand why he'd let all the go. Kendra seemed down to earth but you never really get a physical description of her. I was wondering why she'd go up there alone in the first place but seeing why she stayed put an end to that. Good read wondering if the two no votes are the reason for all of Flints problems. That would explain why they know where he is and the troubles he's having, let's see what the next one holds.
Safe House by Dez Burke is the first book in her Steel Infidels Biker series. This book does have a cliffhanger. I'm not usually a fan of those but it does work with the story. In Safe House, vet Dr. Kendra Shaw is tricked into patching up Flint Mason. The story is fast paced and their romance happens pretty quickly, perfect for a novella. I thought both of the main characters were great. I liked the subtle introduction of side characters who will eventually get their own stores. Overall, Safe House is a great start to a new series. Definitely recommend!!!
I'm happy and sad... Happy that one of my favorite authors has come out with this exciting new book but sad that it ended the way it did. I think I relate to Kendra more than the other heroines in her books.
This book is an important first step in this series as you get the background of Flint and Kendra as you move thru the series. I also like that Ms. Burke provided more character background than in previous books which I felt was missing. I look forward to reading more about their relationship.
Dez Burke has done another OUTSTANDING job with Safe House. I read this book in one sitting and the only thing I have to say is that I cannot believe how fast I blew through this book. This book is HOT and STEAMY!!! And it not like anything she has written - each of her stories have their own flair...I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book to read. I cannot wait to see what Dez comes out with next. I am a huge fan of her writing and will continue to follow her.
The story starts with Flint doing his job as a public defender. Until he gets a call from his older brother AND the VP of the Steel Infidels that changes EVERYTHING!
Gotta like when an author makes the females real - NOT stick thin with non moving fake tits and clothes that allow everyone to see next weeks washing!
And just in case i didn't say this before i will say it again ... I HATE cliffhangers LOL!!
Ladies I have finished reading this book. I really enjoyed Flint and Kendra's story. I particularly enjoyed how honest they were about their feelings towards each other. Flint showed Kendra he wanted to be with her and he just wanted a chance. Then at the end Kendra shows us that she is going to stand by her man and kicks ass if she has to. My kinda of woman. Loved it and can't wait for book 2!
Flint was a part of the Steel Infidels but decided to leave until something happened to a friend that sent him back. Kendra meets Flint when she is sent to help a hurt animal instead she has to help Flint. The chemistry between Flint and Kendra is so strong but Kendra doesn't want to give in but it is too strong for her to deny. I thought this was a great read and I am looking forward to reading more of this series to see what happens with Flint and Kendra.
I was hoping I could devour the newest of Ms. Burke, but I was sad to tell you this was the least I could enjoy. I really enjoyed and liked the previous books of Ms. Burke. And I hated to say that this book failed to deliver enjoyment I had hoped. The description of the heroine was off, I couldn't imagine how Kendra looks like only knowing that she's curvy. The plot was kind of abrupt. And the cliffhanger? Ugh. I was generous to give this 3 stars.
Are you kidding me? Another freaking "series" book where I have to purchase another book(s) just to get the rest of the story. I'm sorry, but this practice that appears to be all the rage lately is not only misleading and annoying but guarantees that I will never buy another book from any of these authors. Kinda smacks of greed. I'm not that desperate to read any book and with all the great competition out there, I'll stick to authors who don't subscribe to this ridiculous tactic.
I was engaged from the beginning and liked both characters particularly Kendra which is saying a lot since I'm hard on heroines. She's tough, but sensible and Flint matches her. He's alpha w/o being a jerk. I loved his unapologetic honesty too. It's part one of a duology and ends at an exciting moment, but between their introduction and that moment there was a lot of good development and passion. I would definitely read this author again and for sure the second book.
