Rebel is the third and final installment of The Identity Trilogy, a series based in the near-future dystopian world of Android. In it, Mel Odom concludes his tale of murder, intrigue, and what it means to be human.
Mel Odom is a bestselling writer for hire for Wizards of the Coast's Forgotten Realms, Gold Eagle's Mack Bolan, and Pocket's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel book lines. His debut SF novel Lethal Interface made the Locus recommended list . The Rover was an Alyx Award winner. He has also written a scientific adventure of the high seas set in the 19th century entitled Hunters of the Dark Sea. He lives in Oklahoma.
A really good ending to this trilogy. I liked the pacing of this mystery and enjoyed how the author maintained the story perspective from the bioroid's point of view, adding the little details in the descriptions on why the bioroid did certain things because of its capabilities, and how these contrasted from how a human would have acted, or been expected to act. My only gripe with the plot was that I did not fully understand why Mara had been kept alive. Unless I missed something, I did not see what purpose was served by her abduction and captivity.
This one took me a while to get thru. I feel like I got lost in the political part of the story and the motivations of the BBEG were never really explained very well.
The first book was the strongest and they tapered off from there.
I feel like a lot of the plot here was happening because an event needed to occur, even if there wasn't a clear progression from one to the next. Our main character spends some time serving as a doctor in a mercenary company, and picks up and ditches a sidekick, and I couldn't really tell you why other than because action scenes.
Beyond that, I feel that a lot of the questions about the nature of identity weren't really resolved, and that the conclusion leaves a lot of loose ends that I wonder about. The overarching conspiracy didn't have a satisfying shakedown, partially because we hadn't been given enough information to come to any conclusion beforehand, and partially because so much of the action had been removed from the principal characters of the conspiracy. The question of what identity means to a character who was created based on another person's neural patterns was muddied, rather than clarified, by the conclusion.
Finally, I freely admit that this is a nitpick, but at one point the main character - who is intelligent enough to serve as a detective and a doctor - describes the speed of a train as "78 kilometers per mile." When I read this, I facepalmed, at a rate of four palms per hand.
A nice wrap up to a trilogy that could've been a single big book. Each one of the parts reads fast, with the second suffering from the usual 'middle of a story' set of problems.
The ending feels a bit abrupt to me, but maybe that's just because I'd love to read more stories set in the Android universe ;-) The resolution was satisfying, and surprising enough (one of the possible twists/endings I was envisioning).
This series was enjoyable for the most part and a great way to become more familiar with the Android Universe setting. Great how each of the books explore Earth, the moon, and Mars respectively.
Since he Red Sands cycle in Netrunner just started, I'm really looking forward to seeing things discussed in this book and I hope there are some references to the characters. Would love to see Drake on a card.
