It was fun to read a volume dedicated to the backstory of the beguiling Bêlit, likely the most compelling of all of the Cimmerian's sundry lovers.
I feel the writer did a good job capturing her tempestuousness and the panel art, while not overly impressive, got the job done. A positive first experience of Marvel's Conan content for me.
Tini Howard fails to impress again. As an origin story for Belit, this fell flat. The decisions Belit makes often don't make sense. She is just portrayed as this crazy, impetuous girl who things happen to always work out for. Kate Niemczyk's art look unfinished in several places. It certainly looked better in some of her previous Marvel work like Mockingbird.
Enter Belit, the Queen of the Black Coast, piracy, beasts, dark magic, loads of fun, I'm having a blast with Marvel's Conan brand so far, getting an urge to go through the Dark Horse catalogue.
Exciting, dark, and bloody Conan-era adventures abound in Belit, though they're far more surface level and lacking the surprises of Jason Aaron's main series. This volume basically outlines Belit's early life, taking her from a pirate princess to a pirate queen. She's impetuous and proud, even with her pirate king father dead and her throne lost.
I enjoyed the high fantasy vibes, including the sometimes stilted dialogue, but Belit was missing a certain spark. The art didn't help or hinder, generally thick and blocky. I'm tempted to dock a star simply for the near-nude depictions of Belit on the front and back covers. She's far more clothed in the actual book, so the cover throwbacks to 80s smut comics is unnecessary. Didn't want to carry this volume around in public.
Age of Conan: Belit shows how Belit came to be the Pirate Queen that Conan runs into! It shows how ruthless she is and what she is willing to do to be the Pirate Queen! Age of Conan: Belit is a fast paced adventure that never let up and you can see all the character elements dropping in to place that will make up the ruthless womna that is Belit!
Age of Conan: Belit art is brilliant and dovetails neatly into the brilliant script! This makes for a epic tale that never lets up from the beginning full of twist and turn that will surprise you! Age of Conan: Belit is full of epic adventure and Belit headstron nature comes to the fore as she rolles over her opposition from the start!
Age of Conan: Belit is a rollercoaster ride as Belitt seizes power, full of daring do as Belitt and her crew encounter rivals and opportunities at every turn, blood which Belit is certainly keen on, ruthlessness as no one gets in Belit's way, epic as she seizes her ship, adventure as she zips all over Hyporia and action! Brilliant Crisp high Five! Get it if You Can! :D
Belit, the pirate Queen of the Black Coast, is a secondary character in Conan stories, given an origin and a spotlight here for the first time. You won't like her, but you can admire her ruthlessness and hard edges, her single-minded pursuit of fortune, power, independence and influence. As a woman in the Hyborian Age, she has to be scarred, tough, brutal and awful, and all of that comes through on the page here. The art is cool (though this cover is not representative) and the writing is more developed than a lot of other stuff with Belit in it.
Finished this trade today. The tale of Conan's onetime pirate queen love Belit from her early origins to her days as Queen of the Black Coast.
The Marvel Comics story was decently done but in all honesty, it felt a little bit like I'd seen it done a million times before. And while that number is an exaggeration, I have read the story of Belit (at least the part of her tale where she was with Conan) a lot over the years.
It's a decent enough read but for longtime Conan fans, I'm not sure I would say it is a must have part of your library.
Bêlit’s dread pirate father Atrahasis challenges his teenaged daughter to find one of the sea beasts she professes exists. She accepts the challenge.
Her father is attacked and is sentenced to die alone on a sandbar for his past sins as a pirate.
“Pirates don’t get to grow old. They get to die.”
Bêlit stays with him, offers him a quicker salvation by blade, and Atrahasis accepts.
Bêlit ends up a captive to be sold into slavery when a sea monster intervenes and she becomes the Captain of The Tigress, one of her father’s ships.
She strikes a bargain with Tanada, The Mad Witch of Barathan, to defend the Witch’s shores from sea monsters.
Four years pass and many voyages later, the legend of Bêlit has spread. She reunites with N’Yaga, a dear friend of her father and her childhood protector.
Bêlit makes an enemy of Stygia’s High Priest Apheru and is hexed. Belit survives and seeks revenge. Exit Apheru.
This is Bêlit in her formative years. For me, it seemed like more of a book for the YA audience. Nice cover for the trade but I think the interior might be better served in B/W. Issue 4 has a nice-looking nightmare sequence. Nice cover art for the trade. This may be for a Bêlit completist or a or a younger audience that is into Sword and Sorcery, Conan style but minus everyone’s favorite Barbarian.
Wouldn't that outfit on the cover do William Morris proud? Beautiful and practical! Though worth bearing in mind that, just as the most celebrated illustrator of the original Weird Tales was Margaret Brundage, so this is Sana Takeda, and not the male gaze one might assume. Alas, she's too busy with Monstress to contribute interiors, so those are from Kate Niemczyk, whose work is good but considerably more conventional, particularly on a story that doesn't offer the same opportunity as Mockingbird to show off her comedy skills. She shares with Tini Howard (no relation to Robert, as far as I know) the tough task of crafting a female-led story set within the Hyborian Age, a setting which was created largely as a homosocial fantasy by a deeply fucked-up Texan closet case. It can be done, as witness the enduring success of Red Sonja (though granted, I only know the film, always a favourite in my family for its wealth of silly hats). This, though, feels a little too modern in its characters, technology and assumptions, a little too normal. It's fun enough - of course it is, these are all solid creators and it's about a pirate king's daughter coming into her own as she seeks sea monsters to fight. But it lacks the true Conan strangeness.
Having not story of Conan (the original stuff) I don't know much about side characters but I did knew about Belit due to the boardgame Conan where we got naked Belit - one of the reasons I back it up - yeah yeah boobs captivate me. Sue me.
I thought why not read this... It was a really interesting read of the coming of age story as we learn more of one version of Belit upbringing. Bsaically she wants to mimic her father which was a pirate king and she wants to go on adventure and kill some mythic monster.
People get in the way and then she also has some side adventures for revenge and pleasure. She becomes a powerful warrior and seamistress the way we know her.
Good story, but don't expect anything epic.. In terms of art, is okay and marvel alike, women with big boobs, some reveal but never showing. There are no sex or any graphic stuff in violence or sexual whatsoever
When I was younger, nothing about the Conan Universe of comics enticed me to read them. When marvel got the Conan license back late last year, early this year (2018/2019) I decided to jump on board and was not disappointed! Age of Conan Belit tells the origin of Conan's lost love interest and is way better than I expected it to be. Not just a tie in the book this story holds its own really well and who doesn't like a pirate's tale (or pirate princess in this case). You don't have to know anything about Conan to enjoy this "Pirates of the Caribean-Eskt" story.
A rather tame attempt at an origin story which only occasionally hits the mark. Any good Howard pastiche needs to have the basic elements of barbarism versus civilization and a Lovecraftian handling of the supernatural. Without these you lose the Hyborian flavour and it becomes a generic fantasy story that could be told in any setting.
Just what I want from a Hyborian comic, juvenile writing and cartoonish art. The modern Conan and Conan-based comics are a solid argument in favor of leaving the franchise completely alone because it's pretty clear that no one in a position to work on them should be working on them. Complete crap.
The story was just okay for me, it felt like it had the contrivance and angst of a YA work, but the presentation of more mature one. The art was odd to see the heroine's skin change color chapter to chapter.
Backstory for the undead pirate queen Bêlit- the art is very plain and the story isn’t much deeper. I love Conan so I felt I had to read it but wouldn’t recommend it to someone who isn’t a Conan obsessive
I really enjoyed this issue. I like how the author began Belit's journey. It has definitely made me excited to see where the story goes in the next issue.
Was hoping for some great Female Conan type adventure but this isn't that. She's too young here, never really tested, and then it ends with her on a boat. The art is also sketchy.
