Resisting Atlantis

Rate this book
What if everything you think you know . . . is wrong?

Cora is your average college freshman. Battling the evils of boring classes and noisy dorms, her greatest concern is how to attract the attention of the drool-worthy, party-god next door.

That is, until Kaden comes barging into her life, insisting everything she knows is false. The family and friends she grew up with don’t exist. Her entire past a carefully-crafted fabrication, created to replace the truth.

Her name isn’t Cora, it’s Cameron. And she isn’t from New York. She hails from Atlantis. Yeah, that Atlantis. Oh yeah, and she’s psychic.

Crazy, right?

Except, tall, dark, and out-of-his-ever-loving-mind doesn’t come alone. Trouble follows, thrusting Cameron back into a world she can’t remember and a life she must reclaim if they’re going to make it out alive.

I was asked by the author to read and review this.

When I saw that this was going to be about Atlantis, the Greek mythology buff inside of me jumped for joy. I was accepting this before I even fully knew what it was about.

I just want to be clear that even though I gave this three stars, I did really like it. I thought the action moved well and that Cam was a good heroine for the story. Kaden was also a good hero, the kind of guy who really doesn't see himself as a hero, even though everyone else does. I like that quality in main characters.

There were some things that bothered me a little, though. Sometimes Cam was pretty self-depricating in a way that just sorta rubbed me the wrong way. Like whenever they referenced a plan that involved her showing compassion for someone who probably didn't deserve it, she would say, "I'm probably stupid enough to do that." It just made me wonder why it was "stupid". What's wrong with Cam being caring and showing compassion where others wouldn't? That seems like a strength to me.

Also, I eventually got a little sick of Cam and Kaden together by the end of the book. Let me put it this way. Have you ever been on a double date/out with another couple where they just keep making goo-goo eyes at each other all night long? Every word out of their mouth is complimentary to the other, and every action in some way brings them closer to each other. It's cute at first like, "Aww, they're in love." But by the end of the night, it's more like, "If they make one more kissy face, I am going to erect a concrete wall between them." That was Cam and Kaden. They were almost so cute they were annoying.

As always, this is simply my opinion of the story as I read. I liked the characters, especially individually, but I found them somewhat annoying together by the end of the story. And like I said, the action moved well and had a cool plot.

A mash up of two great books: The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan and Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set (Mistborn, #1-3) by Brandon Sanderson .

Cora thought she knew who she was. She was a snarky young woman on her way to bigger things; the beginning of so many stories. Reality was tilted on its axis one day when Kaden was caught rifling through her things in her dorm room. He transformed her world overnight. Her life was a lie. Her name is Cameron and her family was a planted myth. She was actually from Atlantis and her role in the revolutionary war was crucial. She had to go back.

The book left me with many questions. One of which was that I wonder why a false life was impressed upon her instead of just killing her. Anyway, I am looking forward to the next book and that's what matters.

GAH ALL THE FEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Full Blog Post @Book-Marks the Spot

Cora’s Life is about to be turned upside down.

Lies. That’s what the guy, Kaden tells here. Everything that she knows is not real. Her memories are not her own. Confusion, hurt, violated, Cora doesn’t know what to believe. Kaden has uprooted her entire life or the life he knows. He tells her things that can’t be real, her from Atlantis. Everything becomes real once people start to try and kill you. Now she is with the resistance and the one thing they need she can’t give them because she can’t remember. Now they are in a race against time to bring back here memories and take out a threat that they might not survive. People will die, but who will come out the victor?

Cameron /Cora might not remember who she is, but she is willing to risk everything to win the war.

Gah All the feels after ending that book. The tears let loose and once they started I couldn’t stop. Cameron and Kaden kept coming up against obstacles everywhere they turned. I loved this book! Atlantis is a beautiful place, but beautiful can be deadly when there is a mad man as a king. Cameron and Kaden have been through so much and it’s just going to get harder for them, especially after that ending. Man the tears of frustration! I just wanted to hit something for the injustice. Resisting Atlantis has it all: EVIL bad guy, Romance, Kick-Butt characters, Awesome Powers, world building was fantastic, and action at every turn. You won’t be able to put it down, so get comfortable and have chips and tissue handy.

Things about Resisting Atlantis that make it stand out over other books I’ve read.

1. The female lead is pretty awesome and has cool powers, but she isn’t the biggest baddest out there. Everyone in the book has their own strengths.

2. Cameron is not the bad guys’ target. Yeah they are trying to kill her, but she is just in the way. They are after someone else *gasp* I know I was shocked as well. The bad guys always want the female lead, but not this book.

3. Cameron is pretty but not every guy wants her, not that she would want then anyway. She has her sights on someone else.

4. No Love triangle. I know a lot of books don’t have them but most of them do. I actually like love triangles, but this book wouldn’t have felt the same with one. It was perfect the way it was. The romance wasn’t the main focus of the book, the resistance was.

5. The abilities they have. Yes, some of them I was familiar with, but I like the names. Especially forecasting. You think it would be something to do with the weather but it isn’t. Forecasting is when you can see into the future but only a couple of seconds or minutes. It’s pretty handy in a fight. There are some major players in the game and they have some scary powers that make me cringe.

Cameron is a hard character to explain. When she was Cora I swear we could have been the same person. We both love books, doodle while the teacher is talking, and we both are funny. Ok so maybe that sounds like a lot of people but whatever lol Well that changed when she became Cameron. I think I actually like her more as Cameron. She is brave and selfless. I admire her courage yet she doesn’t see it in herself. She trusts her instincts and sometimes they are a little slow, but most of the time she gets it right. I want her to have a happy life with Kaden but I don’t think that will ever happen, which is tragic!

Kaden is loyal and caring and loving and protective. His love for Cameron astounds me. I felt both of their pains at being in a war and wanting to be with someone and not knowing if either one is going to make it. That is horrible, and he just wants Cameron safe no matter what even if he has to sacrifice himself. I admire him as a man…now where can I find one like him in real life :D oooh and those eyes O.O Yes please.

Overall: Resisting Atlantis was gut-wrenchingly good and I didn’t want it to end. I may have only given it 4.5 stars but it’s one of the best this year. Jamie Canosa knows how to tell a story, tear your heart out, while making you want more. The wait for the next one is going to be torturous!

Quotes:

Fighting off the urge to toss a comic book his way, I go in search of what I came for. Mind numbing, heart stopping, soul searching fiction. The only magic that truly exists in the world.

There’s nothing gentle or sweet about his kiss, as I imagined there to be. It’s like he’s finally let go, released his iron grip on control, and together we dive headfirst into passion and desire.

4.5 stars!

I was really excited when the author told me about this book! I'm a big fan of her other books and I was looking forward to reading this one! Plus, I knew I definitely wanted to read this after I read the synopsis! It sounded amazing and so different! This book was so unique and it was written brilliantly! I completely loved it! The plot of Resisting Atlantis had a really unique concept to it, which I loved! I haven't read anything like it before! There was also a bit of a paranormal aspect to the plot, but it wasn't like full on paranormal and it didn't have paranormal creatures in it like vampires or werewolves! The plot also had quite a lot of suspense in it and it had a bit of action in it too, which are two things I love in the plot of a book! The plot kept me wanting to read on and find out what was going to happen next too, but I do have to say that sometimes the action slowed down, which made the plot drag on just a little! I loved it though and I really enjoyed where it went! The characters were amazing! Cameron 'Cora' was the main female character and she was kick-ass in this book! At the beginning of this book, she didn't have any idea of her background and her past, but she soon learns all about it and she takes it all in her stride! She was also determined, loyal and feisty, which are things I loved about her! Cameron did surprise me in this book because she started off being quite quiet and kept to herself and then the next minute she was ready to go into battle lol! I just loved Cameron and her personality! Kaden was the main male character and he was so hot and so protective of Cameron! I just adored him! I could also see that he had really strong feelings for Cameron and that he would do anything to make sure she stayed safe! My heart did go out to Kaden when this book went back and showed you how bad his life had been and how bad the environment he was raised in was! Kaden didn't let it change him though and what he had been through made him even more determined to get rid of the bad guys, who were just a bit too close to home ;) There were also quite a few secondary characters in this book and they all added a lot to the plot! I wasn't really expecting this book to be written from both Cameron and Kaden's point of views, but I really enjoyed it because it added a lot to the plot and I loved getting to see Cameron and Kaden's feelings for each other through both of their eyes! I'm really excited to read the next book in this series! This book exceeded my expectations and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next! The ending of this book also leaves it open for so much to happen in the next book, so I can't wait to see where the author's going to take it! The cover for this book is different to what I was expecting it to be, but I like it! It represents the book really well! Big thank you to Jamie for an ARC of Resisting Atlantis and also for having me on her Blog Tour!

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

When Jamie approached me about being part of the blog tour for her new book, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on an ARC, even before I had read the blurb for Resisting Atlantis. Jamie became one of my favorite YA writers after I read her Fight or Flight series (which I highly recommend if you haven't read it). The thing that I love most about her writing is her characters. Jamie has an amazing talent for creating characters that you instantly care about and want to root for. You become so invested in her characters that their journey becomes your own. Every step of the way you are with the characters. You feel every emotion, every injury, every moment of triumph, and Jamie doesn't disappoint with her new series.

Once again, it was the characters that made this book for me. Cam is a strong female lead and her vulnerability makes her a relatable and believable character. Kaden is everything a male lead should be and has joined the ranks of my book boyfriends. The connection between the two was real and swoon worthy, adding the perfect dash of romance to this adventure story. I was invested in their story from page one and couldn't put it down. There is plenty of action and even a few twists that keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next.

My only criticism is that I wish the story contained a little bit more history or back story on Atlantis. As a history and Greek mythology nerd, I loved the idea of the story taking place there. The history/back story is essential to understanding the premise behind Resisting Atlantis, as the central conflict is a rebellion against the Palace. Most of what we learn about Atlantis and the rebellion is through what is explained to Cam as she tries to regain her memories, and I often found myself feeling exactly what she felt, that everyone around me knew something that I didn't and no one was sharing. Having more of a back story would have fleshed out the narrative a bit more and made it easier to connect to the reasons behind the rebellion. However, this "criticism" is probably more of a personal preference than anything. Jamie provides enough in the story to make it flow and make sense; I just wanted more.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This story has everything - adventure, humor, tragedy, romance - that makes for a good read. The characters are well developed and easy to connect to, and fellow nerds like myself will geek-out over the infusion of Greek mythology into the story line. There is a sequel, so be prepared for a cliffhanger. The next book in the series is called Restoring Atlantis, and I am excited to find out what is in store for Cam and Kaden.

Review: 4 Stars

This book was exhilarating and kept you guessing until the last page! The anticipation that came from the battles and learning more about the characters was so intense you’ll be left wanting more. The take on “Psychic” is phenomenal. The twists and turns weren’t to be expected so you will be kept on your toes! There were so many things about this book that made it special. One thing I loved is that this had to do with Atlantis but the amazing part is that it had nothing to do with mermaids and that immediately made me fall in love with the story. This story was unlike any other that I have read and I am so grateful I got to read and review this book.

The characters in this book were made so amazing. I mean Cam was a little wacky and annoying at times but she truly had a great view in family and love. She made this story interesting and I cannot wait to see how she grows in the next book. Kaden was the dream, the thing that every girl looks for in life. He completes Cam in such a way she doesn’t even realize. Their relationship needs some major duct tape and maybe some therapy but the love they share is unexplainable. Their love is such a love that you know no matter what comes between these two that they will find each other and it is hard to find and experience that kind of love.

For the next book I know I will be happy, I will be impatiently waiting for what happens next in their messed up lives. I hope the resistance wins and that there is closure in some way. Kaden and Cameron made this book golden and all the other characters involved made this book memorable. This book has so much that come out of the next one. There is no way to know what is to come next of the sequel. There is so many options that can be used and I am scared to see where it will go and if our two heroes will get the ending they have fought so hard for.

All in all I say you should read this book. This book is a book you may read in the future but it is unlike anything I have read and I am so happy I got to read it and enjoy the story that was given. I do warn you that there is a slight cliffhanger that keeps you begging for more. The best part though is that even with this cliffhanger you don’t end up angry with the author you just hope the book gets published right after you finish. I hope you love this book as much as I did! Enjoy a great book and read Resisting Atlantis.

Check out my blog post for the book tour, and read a short excerpt of this great book. Just go Here

This was a very interesting book. I was hooked really quickly. I even started reading without really knowing what its about. I had read the blurb awhile back and forgot what it was about, just knew it was something I would like. And I did, I loved it.
The writing was top notch, I have been a fan of Jamie Canosa for awhile, have read several of her books, and really loved them all.

I didn't like Cora/Cameron at first, but she did grow on me as the story progressed. Most my issues were some of her shallow ways of thinking, but there was a good reason for that.

Kaden is awesome, him I loved right away. His story and back-story was great, and I just really felt for him. He is hot too, that doesn't hurt, lol.

The whole Atlantis thing was a new one for me to read about. Not anything like I thought it would be, but loved it.

Overall a great story, and do want to read book 2 asap, as I need to know where this goes.

5 out of 5 stars for me.

I received this book from the author for my honest review.

Resisting Atlantis is a fantastically fun ride, from the cool, snarky heroine (my favorite kind) to the drool-worthy hero. Jamie Canosa once again gives us unforgettable, amazing, courageous, fun, amusing, sexy characters and a story you'll be thinking about long past the last page, with a writing style that I adore.

Cora is just happily trucking through life as a college student who keeps to herself, and gets her homework done on time. One day, a stranger shows up in her room, telling her that not only is her name Cameron, but that her life is a lie. She’s really from Atlantis (yup, the one you’re thinking of) and while she might think he’s crazy, it isn’t long until she finds out she’s right. Now she’s thrust into the middle of a war she doesn’t remember, with people who are now strangers though they claim to know her, and into the role of a leader in spite of the fact that she can’t imagine it of herself. I love the uniqueness of this storyline. I mean, Atlantis! Cool idea.

I’m a huge fan of Jamie’s work, her Dissidence series being one of my all-time favorites. My favorite vampire story happens to not star a certain sparkly vampire, but is Our Own Worst Enemies, also by Jamie. So when you have an author who you love so much, it almost becomes worrisome that you might not love their further works as much. With Jamie, I has as of yet to not completely adore everything she’s written. I’ll be honest, Resisting Atlantis is neck-and-neck with Dissidence now for favorite heroine and hero.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well told story, no matter your age. I can't wait for the sequel!

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, so I love Jamie Canosa as a writer and a person (yes, I have met her in person)so when I was offered a spot on the blog tour for Resisting Atlantis I jumped at the chance. Then when I actually read what the book was about (MYTHOLOGY AND PARANORMAL) I was even more ecstatic. Jamie has this amazingly descriptive writing style that allows the reader to become fully enveloped into any one of her stories. My only issue was the beginning was a bit slow for me but it did pick up later on. I also enjoyed all of the action and suspense. And I like that Jamie isn't afraid to kill off characters.
I enjoyed each and ever character that was introduced to us, even the bad guys because you could relate to them all. I like the bickering that goes on between Cam and Kaden and that I can also tell they are madly in love. I loved that we got to see little snippets of secondary characters POVs, it just reinforced that way they acting during the story. My little mini prediction is that Kaden is the last heir and that's why Zanark took him so he could mold him into the ruler he wants.
So overall, Resisting Atlantis was a really original and entertaining read. I can't wait to see if my prediction is correct (Jamie don't go changing it if it am (; ). And honestly I can't not recommend any of Jamie's book to everyone!! They are all amazing (well the three that I have read anyways). So that means everyone needs to read them.

Cora is having nightmares and doesn't understand why. She is in college, she doesn't go to parties, she keeps to herself, so why the nightmares. She doesn't understand them. They are like something that she should remember but doesn't know why. Then enter Kaden, he is trying to find Cameron. He find Cameron but she is known as Cora because she doesn't remember anything. Her memory was blocked and replaced with different ones. Kaden works to get her back to Atlantis where they are from so he work on getting her memory back. Once she gets back she slowly gets her memory back and starts to work on restoring Atlantis. She and Kaden work as a team and bring down the leader. The things that develops between her and Kaden are surprising and how they work together is amazing.
