Ok, let me get this out of the way: the artwork for Nimitz is bad. He is WAY too big. I cannot image that animal riding on any shoulders. It looks like trying to carry around a Labrador on your shoulder! I know Webber has said that creating Nimitz for the future movies has been a nightmare, and they are using the comics as a testing ground. My feeling is that the first test is a failure, if you are trying to follow the books. But if you divorce yourself from the books, he might just work. That said, I liked this version of the story. I thought the art was good. Did it perfectly match my mental image? No, of course not. Was it just like the book descriptions? No. But I thought the art was good and captured the feel of the universe. I thought the dialog was a good adaptation of the book into a comic format. I also like the flashback version. I think it works to engage new people to the Harrington universe. I like this enough that I will buy the follow on issues.
Supposedly a comic book adaption of the first book, it uses book 7 as a frame. The info dumping is here. It's okay. Nimtz was drawn in an interesting way.
I loved this one soooo much!! From the plot to the stunning art, everything was perfect!! You will get fully invested in the story and you won't feel like there is something missing because it has only 40 pages or less. I can't wait to read the next one and I really want the book series!!!
I have never read any of the original books of this series, i only heard about it when the comic came out. But this book is amazing! If your a star trek fan you will love this! What i like about this book is if you never read the novels this book does a great job of introducing you to the honorverse and the back story. The story is great the art is spectacular! Buy this book now!
Honor Harrington is our hero. She’s a leading presence in the Star Kingdom of Manticore.
The People’s Republic of Haven, a communist dictatorship, has failed economically. Its bloated welfare state is unsustainable. So Haven has taken to conquering other planets.
Honor and her officers are aboard the Havenite ship Tepes, as prisoners of war. In fact, they’re in transit to be executed.
Cordelia Random is a member of the oligarchy that rules Haven. It’s kinda awesome how much she resembles a certain Mean Girls actress. 😉
We also backtrack to six years ago, and the fateful events at Basilisk Station.
Good illustrative work; excellent color contrast.
Background on culture, military strategies…some of which, at times, does get too dragged down into the weeds.
The extras are cool—like the designs of characters.
Okay, what on God's green earth happened to Nimitz?
I'm not even a big fan of Nimitz. His existence in the books doesn't really work for me, but still! He's good to Honor, you can't do him like that. It was distracting. Every time I was thinking, oh god, why? I'm sorry, I can't draw at all, but it was criminal.
Overall, the book was alright. I'm not sure if it could hook many people into becoming invested into Honor Harrington. I'm not much of a comic fan, though. The quality of the art was hit and miss (not just considering the design choice for Nimitz).
While this is titled "On Basilisk Station", it should properly be called "In Enemy Hands" since Honor has been captured and in undergoing interrogation by Havenite political police. Reliving her first command as part of her means of withstanding interrogation and torture is an effective way of telling us her story. I only hope that the transition to retelling 'The Honor of the Queen' will not be too disjointed after this arc is finished.
What's about? It's the first book in the Honor Harrington series as a graphic novel. Told from a point of view in the future, Honor Harrington reflects on her life. This story is about how Harrington got her first command, discovered a conspiracy by Haven to seize control of a planet, and thwarted the plan (but started a war).
What did I think? The art was pretty good. Story was alright. Not amazing.
Good for people who are already fans, not so good for newcomers, I think. I also didn’t expect to have a minor fangirl moment in the ancillary info section where it turns out that Linda and Stjepan Sejic both did cover variants.
Edited to add: this does Nimitz so dirty though. Wtf is that design choice????
Having read a number of Honorverse novels and short stories, I was initially quite skeptical about these graphic presentations of the story. After picking up the first volume I quickly became absorbed into to the familiar story, and reckon that I'd enjoy it even more if the story was new to me. Some of the pictorial depictions were a surprise, especially Honor's treecat Nimitz. I imagined him a little more 'cat-like' and cuddly, not the more aggressive looking creature that we see. However, I soon got used to this and the rest of the art is really good. Well worth reading, especially if you're a Honorverse fan.
Okay, I admit being a fan of Honor and Mr. Weber since discovering the Honorverse oh so many years ago. This is decidedly different. Different than I imagined (but that is a very normal thing), but also a bit different than the original book. Slightly so. Nimitz is way more big and huge in these pictures. He also looks more like a spellbound than a treecat. But perhaps that's just me ;-) Try the first book and decide for yourself if you want to see pictures of a favorite character. I know which decision I made.
The Honorverse is going multimedia! This comic represents the first of several new mediums that Honor Harrington will occupy, culminating in a feature film slated for 2018.
Tales of Honor #1 re-tells the story of On Basilisk Station with some really cool artwork that will eventually serve as concept art for the film, which is very exciting.
I hope this isn't the final form they are going to use for the tree cats. writing wasn't great but the animation looked good. it's fun seeing it drawn but not even close to as good as the book. you've really got to be an honor fan to appreciate this. I doubt it will bring in many new readers.
I was not drawn into this story at all and I did not care for the characters. The artwork was good when it was of space and space ships, but the people look like they're in a computer game. I'd give this a pass unless you're a fan of the novels, then you might like it anyway. But if you're coming into it fresh, I'd suggest not wasting your time.
this is a 'comic' version of David Weber's "On Basilisk Station", more or less. i enjoyed it, but of course it did not match MY vision. but it added to my overall appreciation, so i'm glad i read it.
Having been a fan of Honor Harrington for almost twenty years, I both yearned for and dreaded any attempt to change her primary medium...the printed word.
A very abridged and timeline distorted version. lots of artistic licence in the design of the ship's and shields. Treecats should not look like gargoyles.
Tightly scripted. Nice art. Good characterization. Heavier on the philosophy than the action. I prefer more action in my sci-fi, especially when it's a comic book.
