moves from unconscious rambling to conscious rambling to conscious insight.... still many questions linger... are the answers in the book? did hal take the dmz? did he stay off the bob hope? what about Madame P? and of course Don Gately... did he end up on some beach somewhere.. dumped back into an earlier part of his life... having to relive everything from that point? did he die? or did he live? and it appears the wheel chair dudes were pulling off there tennis attack.. and they really X'd with Orin... the upside down glass! ok .. what about Pemulis? what did the matty pemulis have to do with it? and 'the' cartridge... did they find the master... TOO LATE?.. and who was mailing it out to selected enemies of JOI?? and Rudy Lenz? i can't recall did he get zamidat'd by the cartridge after he stole the stuff from the oriental ladies? besides the monty python stuff... there are deep insightful moments that look deeply into addiction, desperation, depression, suicide and attachments ... DFW really captures angst.. powerlessness... darkness... absurdity.. and interconnectedness in a gut wrenching way at times... reminds me of Kate .. what happened to her after she got drunk with marathe.? i'm glad i pushed through the tough spots.. it was worth it.. maybe even worth another reading... definitely need to read the first 'chapter' again... the humor was worth it alone... the 12 step stuff seemed so much more authentic than other accounts i have perused.. the tennis and teenagers stuff.. thinnest thread at time..but there's some good stuff there too. Filled with great stories within the story and lots of random purpose to the madness,,,,,,
I loved this book, for all my complaining while reading it about how long it was, and how challenging, and how long, at the end my main complaint is that there wasn't more. Others have written very eloquently about how great this is and what a work of genius, so I won't try to repeat that here. But I will say that while not for everyone, if you can make it through this book it is well worth your time. In some ways this book sent me back in time, to when works of literature had something new to say to me and offered adventures in discovery. They changed me in some way, by giving me a new way to see things or offering a reminder of universal truths. It was like it reminded me why I love to read. Anyway, read it if you can, and unless you hate it, keep coming back to the book until the end.
