Michael Asher, archdeacon of the great cathedral in the isle, is devout, intelligent and charismatic. If he becomes the new bishop, as some believe he should, he will take the church forward into a radical new age. But ten years ago, in one moment of weakness, he made a mistake which now comes back to haunt him. As he finally confronts the demonic Lucas Devereux, he must also face the truth about himself – what he did to Anabel Lynn and the part he played in the death of Bishop Stephen. And he must answer the question - how does a man choose between faith and love?
This novel is an exploration of one man’s faith and conscience; those in need of quick thrills should download elsewhere.
The general descriptions of nature and daily life of archdeacon meant to be bishop but for... It is a book full of contemplative thoughts rather than action and portrays the best of the religious and the worst of the religious. It is a quiet sincere archdeacon we follow on his very difficult journey. Very moving stuff.
A simple tale told with all the complexities of religion, faith, humanity, good and evil, and trust. Grainger's writing flows with the story and is breathtaking in its beauty and simplicity. Layers of perception are there...realize this same story told by another character and how it might change, or not....
I’m overwhelmed. This novel is so contemplative, so fraught with guilt and penance. The conflict between the two archdeacons highlights all that seems wrong in religion. The character Asher shows all that could be good, but all is not as it seems.
This novel is not something I will soon forget.
I read this as a Kindle Unlimited book. I wonder if that accounts for the textual errors. For examples, “roof of the knave” and “whole in the wall.” There were numerous places where a break (space) in the text would have helped to demonstrate the passage of time.
I appreciate novels that are character driven. The title Asher notifies the reader that the focus is on Archdeacon Asher. Grainger, as always, provides vivid description of the physical surroundings and detailed insights into the characters.
