Heel lang geleden gelezen en weinig herinneringen aan, tenzij dat de beklemmende sfeer me helemaal niet aansprak. Wellicht was ik te jong.

Ik heb dit verhaal gelezen in 'Typen', een bundeling korte verhalen van Buysse. Ik heb de eerste druk en moest de bladzijden lossnijden voordat ik het boek kon lezen ;-) Plus-que-parfait is het laatste en langste verhaal maar beslaat toch slechts zo'n vijftig pagina's.

Het zit vol humor en is tegelijkertijd tragisch. Alle personages, niet een uitgezonderd, hebben te lijden onder de grote menselijke tekortkomingen. Ze zijn hypocriet, dom, naijverig, vals en laf, en toch beschrijft hij ze met veel liefde. Vrijwel al zijn verhalen spelen op het Vlaamse platteland (dorpen en gehuchten rondom Gent) in de tijd dat de landadel en de pastoor het voor het zeggen hadden en de boeren hard moesten werken. Maar dat betekent niet dat de adel gelukkig was en de boeren niet, nee, het ongeluk kon beide even hard treffen en wordt meestal door de mensen zelf over hen afgeroepen. Het betekent ook niet dat de adel slimmer en verstandiger was dan de boeren, beide komen er eigenlijk even slecht uit.

Het verhaal is zo van binnenuit geschreven dat het net is of je er zelf bij bent, vol met kleine details die aantonen dat Buysse zijn mensen zeer goede kende, in al hun dagelijkse bezigheden.
