This is the most bittersweet book I've read in a while. It's not quite as good as Luciole has a Dream although it deals with a similar subject, but still a beautiful exploration of the hope of learning you're not alone.

Saya und Ku - absolutes Dreamteam in einer unglaublichen Sci Fi Welt. Ich hab's geliebt. Der Artstyle ist unverkennbar und enorm detailreich.
Ku der kleine Knirps, dich würde ich sofort adoptieren.
Eine grosse Empfehlung und bereits gespannt auf die weiteren Bände der Serie.

A really interesting post-apo story. It’s bittersweet, kinda melancholic (?) and the art is like a cherry on top for this dark theme. Will definitely read more.

A post-apocalyptic world, in which humanity has been wiped out through a crystal virus brought by aliens, and a girl with her animal-like sidekick, who are on a mission to clean the world, so it's safe for humans again, and to look for any survivors.

I love the concept.
Each chapter, Saya visits a different area to look for survivors and to dispose of the infected bodies. As the virus has only taken out humans, she occasionally meets robots or androids.
In each chapter, we get a glimpse of the dead's lives, and a bit more lore. Slow-paced, but wonderfully so.
The art is very detailed, especially the buildings feel quite real. You can grasp the vastness of the world, and the loneliness Saya must feel. Although she doesn't know anything else.
The character designs, especially some of the robots/AIs are quite interesting, although sometimes give a more fantasy-vibe, rather than sci-fi.
I've mostly started it to get a melancholic vibe, but unfortunately it's not that melancholic. Chapter 3 (cinema) was, and is also my favorite so far, but it's more of an "routinely empty" feeling. Like the feeling you get when you've been doing the same thing every day for years, again and again. Typical working class routine. Which is kind of the point, but I do hope it dives deeper into melancholy.

Aunque a priori pueda parecer una historia manida (post apocalipsis, última persona en la tierra etc etc) no deja de sorprender y a ratos de encoger el alma, y deja con ganas de más. La suerte es que hay al menos 5 tomos más!!!

A rather quiet and calm post-apocalyptic slice-of-life, which is kinda nice and different! Art wise, I liked how the backgrounds are incredibly detailed, yet the main character is more simply drawn. It makes for a fun contrast! And I really appreciated how all the sound effects were written in Japanese, romaji, AND English... which is ironic because I was literally talking about not understanding Japanese onomatopoeia last night! Anyway, this is like a 3.5 for me, but that's enough for me to keep reading the series.

Hace tiempo que no leía un manga tan interesante, y solo es el primer tomo. Me encanta la manera en la que la historia nos hace conectar con la misión de la protagonista, mientras recorre un mundo devastado en el que se va encontrando con distintos personajes y viviendo experiencias en las que, través de sus ojos, podemos llegar a apreciar todas las aristas que nos hacen ser, para bien o para mal, seres humanos. Y mención aparte merece el dibujo, hay paneles que te dejan literalmente sin palabras. Un maravilloso descubrimiento que espero seguir disfrutando.

You follow Saya through her 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, accompanied by her small sidekick Ku. The story unfolds in an episodic way, with each chapter focusing on different missions or parts of the city. As the journey continues, the world grows larger and you slowly learn more about both the setting and Saya herself.
𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 is a central theme, but it is balanced by moments of 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙚, giving the story a 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙩 tone. It is 𝙨𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙚, yet deeply engaging.
I really enjoyed this manga. Volumes 2 and 3 are already out, and I will continue reading the series. 🙌🏻🖤

Чим більше читаю в цьому жанрі, тим важче давати адекватну оцінку, не базовану на досвіді. Та я, передовсім, хочу популяризувати такі історії, а не вигружати вагони авторського бачення, тому й така оцінка.
Якщо ви геймер із досвідом фантастичних апокаліптичних сюжеток, любитель фільмів про виживання після катастрофи, поціновувач книжок, у яких така ж анотація, як і в цієї манґи, то... все одно дайте їй шанс. І не тому, що перекладів саме такої манґи мало на нашому ринку, а щоби побачити ще одну версію такого світу, але мальовану.
Найкраще, що тут є, це фони. Масштабна кропітка робота, яка занурює тебе більше за героїв і діалоги. Це наче артбук про світ після кінця. І, хвала нашому видавцю, це змогли доповнити гідним папером. Штрихи переливаються сріблом і мені смішно говорити про те, що краще би тієї дівчинки там не було)
Вона чарівна, без сумніву. Її приглушені емоції мають пояснення, біографію також не сховали, але мальовка цієї дитини видається чимось чужим на шедевральному фоні. Збавляти бал за художній талант якась дурня, тому робити цього не буду, але от манзі Левіафан вдалося гармонійно вмалювати людей, а тут відчувався дисонанс.
Є банальні історії, як про маєток, а от кінотеатр і прихисток мене зачепили. Перший нагадав мою кохану гру Сома й перенесення свідомості, а другий вищезгаданий Левіафан. Фінал тому здався спершу злитим, бо якось несподівано вийшло, але ця арка швидко отримала свій кінець і дала гідний післясмак.
Поки героїня асоціюється в мене з твердолобістю ключового персонажа гри Дет Стрендинг, але я тупо готова збирати цю серію заради фонів. Давно не відчувала такого захоплення від розворотів і тактильного кайфу від обкладинки.

Este primer tomo me ha parecido muy interesante. La historia plantea un mundo que ha sido destrozado por unos monstruos y solo hay una superviviente que se encarga de explorar las ruinas. Busca gente que siga viviendo o incinera a los que han sucumbido a la cristalización.
Los fondos son espectaculares, y me llama la atención cómo pueda continuar así que lo seguiré.
También hay un bichillo pequeño (me encanta) que según dice la chica llevan juntos desde siempre.

Kreska jest prześliczna.
Manga opowiada o swiecie, w ktorym ludzie zostali wytępieni przez chorobę zwaną krystalozą. Towarzyszy w niej głównej bohaterce, która samotnie poszukuje ocalałych, co jest jej pracą.
Dzięki temu że na stronie jest serio bardzo mało tekstu, to czytało się bardzo szybko. Polubiłam Saye i raczej sięgnę po kolejne tomy.
Kojarzy mi się trochę z podgatunkiem ksiazek cozy-fantasy. Pewnie dlatego, że Saya ma nadzieję że nie jest sama. Że jej się uda.

Quite a dark look on humanity and its future, very good art and decent characters so far. I can see myself enjoying this one quite a lot as it continues to release. But if you like post apocalypse stories with a hint of something otherworldly and lovecraftian then this one is a recommendation from me

Quiet apocalypse stories are good and this one was very enjoyable. Definitely had that melancholy undertone that is common in those types of stories. Will definitely pick up volume two.

Très intriguée par cette jolie couverture sur NetGalley, ainsi que par le résumé très mélancolique, j'ai tenté ma chance avec ce nouveau manga des éditions Delcourt.
Ce n'est pas mon genre de prédilection, mais j'aime sortir des sentiers battus de temps à autre car cela me permet de faire parfois de jolies découvertes et de briser un peu la "monotonie". Avec Mission in the Apocalypse, c'est surtout l'ambiance bien particulière qu'annonçait le résumé qui me tentait. Et de ce point de vue là, je n'ai pas été déçue. Nous suivons Saya dans une mission bien solitaire voire décourageante. Elle est à la cherche de survivants suite à une attaque de créatures ayant provoqué l'extinction de l'humanité, ainsi que des cadavres contaminés. Au premier abord, on se dit rapidement que c'est peine perdue, et pourtant Saya continue inlassablement sa mission.
Il y a une mélancolie certaine de voir ce monde détruit ainsi que l'échec de trouver des survivants. Et en même temps, Saya ne perd pas espoir, ne se morfond pas. Elle continue. Et même si l'on se dit que c'est peine perdue, sa ténacité a quelque chose de fort, de respectueux également. Elle offre d'ailleurs des sépultures à tous les corps qu'elle peut trouver. Il est donc difficile d'être triste en un sens, et c'est un beau tour de force.
On voit pourtant tout ce que l'humanité a perdu. Toute la beauté de ce monde réduit à néant. La résilience des Hommes, l'amour qu'ils pouvaient se porter les uns les autres. Et à côté de cela, il y a aussi une certaine critique de la science, et de nos pires côtés.
On découvre petit à petit qui est Saya, le mystère se dévoilant au fur et à mesure des rencontres qu'elle fait. Il est difficile de ne pas s'attacher tellement elle véhicule de bonté, de générosité et de foi envers sa mission. Kû est aussi un compagnon très mignon qui ajoute de la douceur à Mission in the Apocalypse et amoindrit la solitude de notre héroïne.
Néanmoins malgré un très bon moment passé avec ce premier tome, deux points m'ont un peu chagrinée. le premier le design. Je m'attendais à quelque chose de plus léché, de moins simple en ce qui concerne les personnages. Il y a un grand contraste entre les paysages et les personnages, et je ne sais pas quand je pense à une histoire sur l'apocalypse, je m'attendais à le ressentir dans chaque détail. C'est peut-être un choix assumé pour que justement notre héroïne et ses rencontres détonnent un peu et que leurs formes plus simples, plus arrondies personnifient l'espoir. Je ne sais pas, je pousse la réflexion peut-être trop loin...
Ensuite... je n'arrive pas à me projeter. Où le mangaka veut-il nous mener ? Tout semble sans espoir. Et il n'y a pas vraiment de petites étincelles pour titiller la curiosité du lecteur. Cela manque d'un petit quelque chose qui pourrait faire toute la différence.
Il n'en reste pas moins que Mission in the Apocalypse est un manga intéressant, contemplatif et qui pousse à la réflexion. Une découverte originale que je suis contente d'avoir fait.
Ce n'est pas mon genre de prédilection, mais j'aime sortir des sentiers battus de temps à autre car cela me permet de faire parfois de jolies découvertes et de briser un peu la "monotonie". Avec Mission in the Apocalypse, c'est surtout l'ambiance bien particulière qu'annonçait le résumé qui me tentait. Et de ce point de vue là, je n'ai pas été déçue. Nous suivons Saya dans une mission bien solitaire voire décourageante. Elle est à la cherche de survivants suite à une attaque de créatures ayant provoqué l'extinction de l'humanité, ainsi que des cadavres contaminés. Au premier abord, on se dit rapidement que c'est peine perdue, et pourtant Saya continue inlassablement sa mission.
Il y a une mélancolie certaine de voir ce monde détruit ainsi que l'échec de trouver des survivants. Et en même temps, Saya ne perd pas espoir, ne se morfond pas. Elle continue. Et même si l'on se dit que c'est peine perdue, sa ténacité a quelque chose de fort, de respectueux également. Elle offre d'ailleurs des sépultures à tous les corps qu'elle peut trouver. Il est donc difficile d'être triste en un sens, et c'est un beau tour de force.
On voit pourtant tout ce que l'humanité a perdu. Toute la beauté de ce monde réduit à néant. La résilience des Hommes, l'amour qu'ils pouvaient se porter les uns les autres. Et à côté de cela, il y a aussi une certaine critique de la science, et de nos pires côtés.
On découvre petit à petit qui est Saya, le mystère se dévoilant au fur et à mesure des rencontres qu'elle fait. Il est difficile de ne pas s'attacher tellement elle véhicule de bonté, de générosité et de foi envers sa mission. Kû est aussi un compagnon très mignon qui ajoute de la douceur à Mission in the Apocalypse et amoindrit la solitude de notre héroïne.
Néanmoins malgré un très bon moment passé avec ce premier tome, deux points m'ont un peu chagrinée. le premier le design. Je m'attendais à quelque chose de plus léché, de moins simple en ce qui concerne les personnages. Artistically this was beautiful. Additionally, there's no strange sexualization of our 'Eternal Child' protagonist. At no point did this give me ick. (The bar is in hell for manga but here we are).
However, this feels very much like 'baby's first apocalyptic sci-fi.' If the series proceeds to just be an episodic selection of short one-shots about the 'losses' of humanity, it will only manage to culminate as half-baked and relying on tropes seen before and done better.
I'm being exceedingly harsh on a first volume. Anything that has to do the work of exposition will suffer. Beginnings are the hardest part, so if this series were to progress--unpack history and grow. Show how the Eternal Children were made and went wrong, introduce other characters--even if it's just a personality copy or an AI--that would be something.
I am interested enough to continue reading this when it progresses, but I worry it will stagnate as little more than cool visuals by an exceptional artist.

Ця манґа стала для мене неочікувано приємним відкриттям, попри дуже сумний відтінок сюжету.
Малюнок вражає глибиною й деталізацією — він чудово підкреслює апокаліптичні пейзажі та допомагає зануритися в атмосферу історії.
І сам сюжет. Начебто не вперше читаю історію, де людство опинилося на межі повного вимирання, але саме ці замальовки “буднів” героїні зачепили мене до глибини душі. Як вона мусить збирати та спалювати тіла людей, що колись мали свої історії, мрії й сподівання. Як у речах, записках залишилося відлуння їхніх власників.
Перший том складається з восьми епізодів, які спершу трішки здаються окремими оповідями, але поступово зливаються в єдину картину світу, що постає перед читачем.
“Архів” у фіналі першого тому пробив мене на сльозу.
Дуже раджу дати шанс цій історії, якщо ви ще не читали. А ще ця манґа точно сподобається фанатам “Останньої подорожі дівчат” .

Wow, this was just amazing, gave me all the Kino no Tabi + more vibes. One girl, searching for survivors after a big war with aliens and toxics, and more. It was so good.

I really enjoy this interesting (and it seems growing) subgenre of quiet apocalyptic manga. Each chapter is a little story that opens up what happened in the apocalypse, but the real stories are of the survivors and the main characters living their determined and in some ways almost cozy lives in the aftermath. Like many similar manga of this type, the art is fantastic, too. I look forward to reading more.

Elle est en mission, Saya. Dans un monde ravagé où aucun humain ne semble avoir survécu, elle évolue seule au milieu des décombres. Son but ? Récupérer les cadavres des « condamnés », ceux qui ont été fauchés par « le mal cristallin », afin de les incinérer. C’est l’unique moyen de décontaminer les lieux où stagnent les miasmes qui ont été propagés par des formes de vies apparues soudainement sur terre. Rendre les territoires à nouveau habitables et mettre à l’abri d’éventuels survivants, c’est le quotidien de Saya.
On la voit donc au fil des chapitres inspecter un cinéma, un musée, un manoir, un bunker ou des immeubles à l’abandon. Elles ne croisent que des robots ou des intelligences artificielles, plus aucune autre forme de vie ne semble exister. Elle continue malgré tout ses recherches, avec une sorte de détachement qui interpelle. Et puis son statut interroge. Qui est-elle ? Pourquoi échappe-t-elle à la contamination ? Qui l’a missionnée ? Autant de questions auxquelles les dernières pages apportent un début de réponse, sans pour autant révéler tous les secrets de la jeune fille.
Un manga forcément étrange, où le contraste est permanent entre le détachement de Saya et la réalité dramatique de la situation. Son voyage à travers les ruines devient presque contemplatif, forcément très silencieux et, au final, sans véritable sentiment d’urgence. Les dessins sont splendides, les décors post apocalyptiques hyper-travaillés et l’ambiance irréelle d’un monde sans vie parfaitement rendue.
Après, la thématique n’a rien d’original, les mangas présentant des figures féminines évoluant dans un tel environnement sont légion (on peut par exemple citer le très paisible Escale à Yokohama, le poétique Girl’s last tour ou encore l’écologique Terrarium) mais Haruo Iwamune a su créer son propre univers post apocalyptique. Il séduit en imposant un rythme tranquille et en distillant avec parcimonie des informations capitales qui permettent au lecteur de renouveler en permanence son intérêt pour une intrigue tout sauf répétitive. Du bon boulot !

У мене доволі невеликий досвід із читанням манґи, але кожна з тих, яку я обирала, мені дуже подобалася. І я насправді радію, що MAL'OPUS активно займається її виданням і дозволяє українським читачам познайомитися із новою для себе культурою та літературою💭
Я прочитала перші два томи манґи «На межі забуття: Апокаліптична місія» Харуо Івамуне одну за одною. Наша головна героїня — це дівчина на ім'я Сая Ушіміцу, яка живе у світі, де майже немає людей і головним її завданням є пошук вцілілих від катастроф й дослідження зараженої землі. Вона є тимчасовою науковою співробітницею Інституту технічних досліджень Ушіміцу, і мені також дуже сподобалося, що у неї є свій, якщо можна так сказати, улюбленець на ім'я Ку, і він для мене є таким милим й хорошим😊
Хочеться згадати й те, як красиво й деталізовано змальовані заражені й закинуті міста. Загалом мені дуже подобається, як оформлена ця манґа. Мені здається, вона про те, що ми можемо втратити, про улюблені місця, міста, про наш спосіб життя і загалом про катастрофи, які нас можуть спіткати.
Думаю, що варто розповісти й про те, що у двох томах часом з'являються маленькі вставки з минулого, які дозволяють нам краще пізнати героїв, їхні характери та прагнення здійснити власні місії в теперішньому часі.
• Тих людей і місцин давно немає, але поки існують ті, хто можуть дивитися фільми, вони й надалі житимуть у нашій пам’яті.
• Заради тих, хто, можливо, колись піде нашим шляхом, навіть якщо це буде лише одна людина, що прагне знань, ми повинні зберегти все, що маємо.
• Кожна книга — це чийсь внутрішній світ. Одна думка про це заворожує. Хай то фільм чи роман, яким неосяжним не був би справжній світ, вони створять безліч нових. Люди справді загадкові.
• Ну… Запах книг, наприклад. Відчуття паперу на дотик, шелест сторінок, їх реальність, зрештою і це місце, що зберігає в собі такі відчуття. Його неможливо не любити, і тих хто так вважає, більше, ніж може здатися.

I realize I love apocalyptic manga. A recent read of Touring After the Apocalypse, Vol. 1 reminded me of others I'd read and made me reflect on my love of this subcategory of science fiction (which is not usually my go-to). However, there's something about the setting that most manga situate the end of the world in and what characters they introduce that gets me hyped-- what would it be like to be one of the last people on earth after a major event?
In this case, our main character is a girl who is not entirely human, she's an immortal artificial human. In fact, she was the only one that was born and is used to identify bodies to be burned and stop the spread the the crystalline disease that ravaged the human population. This disease creates blocks of crystals in their body while generally preserving the rest of the body that looks entirely non-decayed. Between watching the new Frankenstein movie by Guillermo Del Toro and watching most of the series The Last Of Us about the mushroom-like virus, I'm entirely caught up in body horror scenarios.
But this girl spends her time moving through the world entirely unbothered, in part because she's had a sidekick since birth, and because she rarely meets anyone though that changes in the first volume with dead characters, AI, and a human. An absolutely fascinating premise and the artwork is phenomenal. I'd hang it on a wall. Second volume already on its way from another library!

In a world left annihilated following the ravages of an alien invasion, Saya, a young girl and research institute employee, methodically moves from city to city, empty building to empty building, collecting data, performing burials, and searching for survivors of the destruction wrought by the wrath of mysterious extraterrestrials. Though her goal is to make the areas she travels habitable again, she has never run into a living human, finding them only in memories of what they left behind in the last days. What does it mean to be human, and what do we learn of ourselves in what we leave behind - and what secrets is Saya herself hiding as she moves unhindered through a world still choked in toxic miasma?
This was an excellent debut for what promises to be an engaging post-apocalyptic, sole survivor adventure. The art is gorgeous and crisp, and there is much to uncover from a reader's perspective in terms of "how did we get here"-type questions. I like the reflective nature of the story so far, and the way Saya's adventures tend to have her pick up on glimpses of the past and what was important in the lives of the humans who are no longer there. Though there are no remnant antagonists such as zombies (at least so far), I would say the manga does so far give some "The Last of Us" vibes insofar as travel and foraging is a focus, and I am so curious to see what happens in the next volume!

Je ne m'attendais pas à ce que ce manga soit si sombre. C'est un tome emprunt de mélancolie et de désespoir. Les humains ont été consumés par le mal cristallin et ils sont tous morts. On ne passe pas par quatre chemins, on a les visuels terribles des corps absorbés par le mal, on a les pages de la crémation des cadavres. Ici, on ne rigole pas avec l'Apocalypse...
Pour rester sur les pages, les dessins sont jolis. Le trait fin des arrières plans donne une sensation de malaise, de saleté, de destruction et puis, au milieu, on a le personnage de Saya, avec ses grands yeux et son visage angélique, et son compagnon Kū (un peu trop en retrait nonobstant), qui nous redonne un peu d'espoir. Comme s'ils n'appartenaient pas réellement à ce monde.

The Color of the End: Mission in the Apocalypse is seinen and an apocalyptic scifi series, which is surely something I like. The main character is a girl that has been modified to be immortal so that she can cleanse the land of toxic miasma and find survivors. Everything is in ruins after the monsters killed people and the places she visits look amazing in their hollowness. That's the best part of the manga surely - the end of the world views. We get to know so little about the situation, but that's the same situation for our main character. It's as if we travel with her to understand what happened. I also liked how she burned all the infected bodies and buried them with respect. It's interesting to hear her thoughts and the manga is very philosophical and detached at the same time.
The art looks amazing. The people aren't that detailed though, but the backgrounds are superb. But, that also works as the contradiction is interesting and somehow undermines the situation even better. Many of the panels are like art works you can hang on the wall. I also liked that the main character is always a child and a girl. This felt refreshing and somewhat Frieren-like too.
