Will & Me

Rate this book
It doesn't matter if you're nine or ninety. Life can turn on a dime. Just ask Will and Lelah Mae Teasdale, residents of the Golden Memories Home for the Aged.

The night Will left his wife, Lelah Mae, to set up housekeeping in the hall, she recorded in her diary the fateful words he spoke to their daughter earlier that day, "Call the police, Ruthie and have me arrested, because I'd rather be in jail than be with your mother."

Will's hasty departure followed Lelah's revelation that she was not a virgin bride, a risky move that was prompted by an article in Guidepost Magazine warning that spouses with sneaky partners would be separated in the Great Beyond. To assure her eternal home with Will, Lelah spilled the beans about an affair she'd had with Chigger Ray, Will's coon hunting sidekick and Best Man at their wedding 65 years before. Will and Me is Lelah's account of what followed the events of that fateful night.

But when Will vanishes from the Home without a trace, some fear, and others hope that he has returned to Six Crossings to knock Chigger Ray's lights out. After a hard target search, Will is located wandering a deserted alley-way in the company of a bedraggled dog he's dubbed Pup, and returned to the Home unharmed. But when the staff confiscates his furry flea hotel, Will goes on a hunger strike, vowing to die rather than lose his newly acquired ally.

Crisis makes for strange bedfellows. In an effort to save Will's life, Lelah and Ms. Loney join forces to rally the residents in a stand against management. In an ironic gesture of courage, the residents join Will in his hunger strike, willing to die for the right to feel alive.
