This is my favorite of the informational texts on Ancient Rome aimed at children that I've yet discovered. There is not a lot of depth to be found here, but the breadth of information covered is fantastic! As a brief introduction to the various topics, this book is pitch perfect.

There is just enough information given to provide a basic understanding of life in Ancient Rome, with details and illustrations provided for everything from food, clothing and houses/apartments to government, the military, and daily life. Not to mention facts about entertainment, money, education, farming, medicine and technology.

One of my favorite things, though, is that there is information here which I've not found in any of the other children's books. The pages about the festivals alone make this book absolutely worth the price. I used so many of the illustrations in class and several of my students also were able to use this book to jump start their research projects.

"Como vivían los romanos" de Anthony Marks & Grahan Tingay es una excelente introducción a la historia y cultura de la civilización que más influencia ha tenido en la historia del mundo occidental, aquella que derrotó a los griegos, a los cartagineses, a los galos, a los egipcios, a los pueblos de Asia menor entre otros grandes rivales gracias a su avanzada organización militar y grandes líderes como Pompeyo, Julio César y Agrícola; aquella que controló desde la península ibérica en el oeste, hasta el límite entre Caledonia y Britania en el norte, hasta Asiria y Armenia en el este llegando al Mar Caspio, y hasta África del Norte cruzando el mar Mediterráneo en el sur...

Comercio, religión, gobierno, su impresionante ejército dividido en las legendarias legiones (que les llevó a formar uno de los Imperios más grandes de la historia), la historia en los tiempos de la República y posteriormente en el imperio (aunque muy resumida), la vida cotidiana, la sociedad, la política, su sistema legal, la esclavitud, la agricultura, incluso cómo se peinaban los romanos... todo eso y más viene explicado de forma breve e interesante por los autores y, como un plus, las ilustraciones dibujadas por Ian Jackson & Gerald Wood son exquisitas y proveen una imagen más completa de como era el mundo que veían los romanos.

Como he mencionado, el libro es una introducción muy buena para todos aquellos no instruidos en la civilización romana. No encontrarás complejos estudios, sí no más bien una síntesis de los aspectos importantes . También como ya mencioné la historia está extremadamente resumida y, por ello, la obra no puede ser considerada literatura especializada.

Aún sí uno es estudioso del tema, el libro te podría interesar por sus magníficas ilustraciones.

As with most Usborne books, this is an outstanding reference for children on Ancient Rome. It is loaded with lavish illustrations and thoroughly covers all aspects of Roman society in a very readable format. I highly recommend it.
