The literary equivalent of an Adam Sandler movie...

I downloaded a sample for this epic six novel fantasy novel, and it seemed intriguing - hey the orcs are the good guys! But, like a film trailer that shows you all the good bits, I felt let down by the actual product itself. Like an Adam Sandler movie it has only one joke, which in this case is that the orcs are the good guys... And I wish the author had done more with this idea, but character development is woeful, and the storyline wanders all over the place. It definitely wasn't planned as a six novel epic, the story arc gets extended way beyond what is interesting, with the same device of changing world's being used over and over again. The early first books are horribly teenage boy sexist, and the author has attempted to address this in the later parts of the book where it stops being actively offensive and is merely passively sexist. I hate myself for being so stubborn that I felt I had to finish this series, taking breaks to read much better stuff in between, but always returning with a morbid fascination, in the hope that it gets better. It didn't...

Read this if you aren't a wuss bag. This is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, unapologetic, in your face roller coaster. A series that moves well fairly easy to interact with and, most of all, entertaining and fun. Would recommend for any fans of military, fantasy, and adventure. 3 Cheers for Stan Nicholls and 3 Cheers for Stryke and the Wolverines.
