do not think it is a secret that I am a major Fernanda Melchor. I’ve also recently became infatuated with the cronica form, a mix between reportage and fiction, a genre specific to South America. What happens when you combine Melchor and Cronicas…this book happens.

This is not Miami is a collection of “relatos”, as she names them, on different subjects. Crime, drugs, refugees who mistake Veracruz for Miami (see the title), UFOs that are actually something else (we are in Mexico so guess what they are). One story that particularly stayed with me was the recount of her first husband’s visit to a haunted house. It was creepy and even more so since it supposed to be real. Melchor tells the story of different people and through them, the story of Mexico, a country plagued by crime, sexism, drugs and too many problems to mention here.

I loved this book but I cannot give it 5* when I compare it to the visceral and extraordinary Hurricane Seasons. That novel was my favorite book of the year when it came out, so it is hard to match.

Está tremendo este libro! Le había sacado la vuelta, porque pensaba que eran cuentos, que me suelen costar un poco, y siempre los siento como un retroceso cuando estás leyendo la obra de alguien que te gusta. En este caso, en realidad son crónicas, muy bien contadas, tienen todos los elementos que me encantan: Melchor escribe maravillosamente bien, y aunque las historias son algunas hasta terroríficas, llenas de violencia y de miedo, a la vez son desde un punto de vista personal, que no excluye lo autobiográfico. Sin duda de mis autoras mexicanas favoritas. Además me encanta que sea jarocha!

Pocos son los libros que te toman del cuello y no te sueltan. Fernanda Melchor (1982) y su “Aquí no es Miami” (2013) es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de ellos.

Dejé de leer Proceso porque me sumía en una profunda depresión. Los textos periodísticos del semanario, sin ser imágenes gráficas de la violencia y podredumbre humana en la que vivimos, me podían abrumar como solo recuerdo que lo haya hecho la única visita que realicé al Blog del Narco.

Por otro lado, los relatos de Melchor están soberbiamente trabajados, uno se vuelve un fetichista de la palabra con su mera introducción, y es que, ofrece una escritura muy bien pulida, cuidada, y consciente de saber cómo dotar con una gran tensión narrativa cada una de las historias que va desgajando en este libro. De esta forma, no hay naúsea, o al menos, se vuelve tolerable, se soporta porque a pesar de lo terrible de las historias, uno no puede dejar de leer.

Los relatos suceden en Veracruz, muestran la presencia del narco, cómo ha afectado a la ciudadanía, a las prácticas culturales. Una ciudad, un puerto, la ignominia, la injusticia y un par de ojos bien abiertos que saben transformar lo escuchado, lo leído, lo vivido, en unas historias brutales.

El horror está presente, un horror real, que se siente, incluso, en el caso de una de las crónicas, “La casa del estero”, como un soberbio cruce entre el relato de terror sobrenatural y la crónica periodística.
Sé que mi comentario se leerá como el de un groupie, el de un fan. Pero, la mera neta, yo pierdo la cabeza ante la buena literatura.

Fernanda Melchor, author extraordinaire, goes literary journalism: This collection assembles thirteen non-fiction texts, mostly written between 2002 and 2011, that paint a vivid picture of Melchor's hometown of Veracruz, a port city on the Gulf of Mexico. In her foreword, she ponders the relation between fiction and non-fiction, especially regarding framing and perspectives, and what terms, in English and Spanish, try to encompass different approaches to the circumstance that all writing is ultimately subjective, that objectivity is a goal one might strife for, but that it is unattainable due to our imperfect human nature (which can also be an advantage, if the writer is aware of their biases and employs intelligent literary techniques). Be the theoretical framework as it may - I recently spent quite some time puzzling over aspects of literary journalism, so I'm quite over the topic at the moment - this collection shines with its intense descriptions and memorable scenes that chronicle the stories Veracruz consists of.

Starting off with a phenomenal text about young Fernanda who believes a drug trafficking plane to be a UFO during the time of a solar eclipse, the stories branch out in all directions: We get a fantastic text about refugees who hid on a ship and got off in Veracruz because they mistook it as Miami (hence the title), which leads to an unexpected moral conundrum. There's also an absorbing text about Evangelina Tejera Bosada, the former carnival queen of Veracruz who ended up killing her two young children. I also learnt about the lynching of Rodolfo Soler, a man the police didn't bring to justice and who, in a particularly gruesome act of vigilantism, was then burned alive by citizens of Veracruz. Femicides also play a crucial role, like that of Nayeli Reyes Santos, a federal judiciary who was abducted and dismembered by a drug cartel.

While I didn't find all texts equally captivating - I particularly liked the first half better than the second -, this is an outstanding portrayal of a specific place in a specific time, that highlights the ambivalence of a society, gives voice to victims and investigates the seedier, messier dynamics below the surface. As readers of Melchor know, she is a specialist when it comes to showing and pondering human cruelty, and this collection is no exception. What a great writer!

Wow. Maravilloso. Las estampas que pinta Fernanda son dolorosas a más no poder. Te provoca sentir a través de su escritura cómo Veracruz se fue perdiendo poco a poco en la inseguridad y violencia; te confronta con el miedo de los habitantes y su tristeza... Sentimientos que trascienden los límites del estado y que pueden aplicarse lastimosamente a todo México como país.
Los últimos relatos se enfocan más en la situación actual (todos con un corte más bien periodístico como nos menciona en el prólogo), mientras que los primeros nos hablan más de un Veracruz de los 80 y 90. Vamos a encontrar unos cuantos relatos que rozan en lo paranormal: la sórdida historia de la reina del carnaval que asesinó a sus hijos, la fiebre ovni inaugurada por Maussan y, mi favorito, La Casa en el Estero, un relato sobre una casa maldita y una posesión demoníaca a la Veracruzana. Súper recomendado.

I downloaded this under the impression it was a collection of short stories, but it turns out they are what the author calls relatos – a word she translates as “tales” or “accounts”, and she explains they are based on events that really happened. Most of the “accounts” were collected in the city of Veracruz, Mexico, between 2002 and 2011 and were originally published in a magazine called Replicante.

As with all these collections my reactions to the individual stories varied. The title story was one that made an impact. A group of migrants who stowed away on a ship to get to the USA come ashore in Veracruz, thinking they have made it to Miami. The House on El Estero was a creepy tale of the supernatural. It seemed to me to be the entry with the largest element of fiction, though the author is adamant that is not the case. Regardless, it was well done, and like the rest of the tales concentrates on the impact of the events on the narrator. I found Ballad of the Burned Man to be another powerful entry.

Most of the remaining stories deal with the impact of the narco gangs, who start small but whose influence becomes pervasive. As one character puts it “…you couldn’t believe that the city where you were born was turning into one of those horrible places up on the border where there’s nowhere to go because of the constant shootouts”. I found the last of the texts, Veracruz with a Zed for Zeta, to be the most effective of these. It consists of sketches of life in the city during 2011.

The other entries made less impact on me, though none could be described as weak. I did wonder whether the focus on the drugs trade gave us an unbalanced view of the city, but what do I know - I’ve never been there.

As the author says, when you live in a city, there are always stories to be found.

Searing yet humane, filled with violence and brutality, fear and unquenchable hope that life could be different, Melchor has pulled together a series of relatos ('tales', 'accounts') that build up to a menacing portrait of Veracruz and its inhabitants.

Ravaged by the drug trade, failed by a government and system where justice and social support are non existent, crippled by institutionalised corruption and fear, living amidst shootouts on the street - and yet there are still moments of humanity and grace to be found: the dock-worker who gives a half-drowned refugee his last piece of bread, for example.

It's hard to understand where this refusal to succumb to despair comes from: these stories depict prison life, poverty, casual cruelties where women kill and mutilate their children, where a rapist is lynched by the family of his victim, a terrifying story of a haunted house - and yet somewhere there is a resistance to simply folding and giving up under the weight of so much misery and desolation.

The writing is never ostentatious, never dramatic or 'look at me' even when describing outrageous events (and a shout-out to Sophie Hughes for such a natural translation) but this is powerful stuff.

File this alongside other contemporary Latin American women authors who are combining intense, engaging, politicised and hard-hitting writing with a sense of literature as itself a form of humanism and resistance.

Compré Aquí no es Miami hace casi seis años en la Librería de la UANL ubicada en Padre Mier. Fue como conocí a Fernanda Melchor, de ahí me quedé enamorada de su forma de narrar. El libro lo compré por el azar y por los colores, una corazonada; fue una de las mejores sorpresas de mi vida lectora.
Siempre que podía recomendaba este libro y pedía a la gente lo atesorase como yo, con los años ya era inconseguible.
Por suerte para todos, a PRH se le ocurrió reeditarlo y además añadir una crónica más. Hoy lo releí con la misma sorpresa de hace unos años y sigo encontrando en la narrativa de Melchor todo lo que me asombra de la literatura. Curiosamente, aunque las Crónicas/relatos ya me las sabía, me sorprendió de nuevo, supongo que así funcionan las buenas historias, incluso las relecturas nos hacen llorar. Léanlo.

Riveting and bleak essays about people and events largely centered in the author’s hometown of Veracruz, Mexico. I appreciated how Fernanda Melchor portrayed gruesome and/or difficult topics such as violence, addiction, and crime without pathologizing an entire group of people; she draws attention to how ineffective government and other social determinants affect people’s behavior. Similar to a lot of the short story collections I read, I unfortunately found it difficult to really immerse myself in these stories, given how brief they were and how sometimes I felt that they more so focused on describing events than digging deep into characters’ psyches. As a character-driven girlie that’s not my preference though I acknowledge it is my preference and not necessarily a fault of the book.

Melchor is the master.

This is a collection of “relatos” (tales or accounts) revolving around the Mexican city of Veracruz. It’s like true stories told with the flourishes of fiction writing.

I could definitely see how some of these relatos influenced her unrelentingly vicious works of fiction. Here, there are drug traffickers, a film set that takes place at a prison, a haunted house, townspeople who lynch and set fire to the local criminal, a former beauty queen who murders her children and puts their severed limbs in plant pots (wish this could be turned into a full-fledged novel, I’m begging), and much more chaos.

It’s intense stuff; some told in a somewhat clinical manner; others told in the Melchor style we’re used to.

A book that isn’t shy about showcasing the underbelly of Veracruz. It’s riveting.

Um contador de histórias viris formadas a partir de uma cultura que dispensa a escrita e desconhece o arquivo, favorecendo antes o testemunho, o relato oral e dramático, o prazeroso ato de conversar.

Quando um/a escritor/a faz sucesso, há dois movimentos inversos que se seguem quase sem falha: publica-se o que é escrito depois, repesca-se o que foi escrito antes, o que pode resultar ou não, porque, de facto, há 10 anos essa pessoa dificilmente era a mesma e se expressava da mesma forma. A prática leva à perfeição há de ser sempre um dos meus lemas. Publicado originalmente em 2013, “Isto não é Miami” mostra mais o lado de jornalista do que de ficcionista de Fernanda Melchor e é como virar uma peça de roupa do avesso: vemos as costuras que lhe deram origem, como se processou a sua construção, mas também se detecta o alinhavado mais tosco, os pontos ainda incertos, em suma, as primeiras criações de quem iria longe.

A cidade é o terreno onde as histórias se criam e reproduzem. E é também o lugar onde morrem. As histórias extinguem-se porque a cidade, palco da realidade, é silenciosa apesar do seu bulício: não pode contar-se a si mesma, não pode aliás contar nada. As histórias, como já analisou Sartre, não são contadas pela realidade, são contadas pela linguagem humana, pela memória.

Em 12 relatos agrupados por temas (Luzes, Fogo, Sombra), percebemos como viver numa cidade como Veracruz, no México, moldou a existência e a escrita de Melchor, num país sobejamente conhecido pela violência, pela corrupção e pelo narcotráfico, mas também pelo misticismo e pelo sobrenatural. É quando a autora se embrenha nestes últimos tópicos, que se prestam mais à especulação e à ficcionalização, que realmente me conquista, enquanto os textos sobre o crime organizado e os cartéis de droga tendem a saturar-me. Privilégio de quem não vive as situações e pode virar-lhes costas, obviamente. Daí que as minhas narrativas preferidas tenham sido “A Casa de Estero”, um clássico da casa assombrada com direito ao exorcismo da praxe, e “Uma Prisão à Filme”, quando uma cadeia é esvaziada para servir de cenário a um filme de Mel Gibson, um episódio tão bizarro que parecia inventado. “Isto Não é Miami”, que dá título à colectânea, é assustador por sabermos que também é assim que se processa a emigração ilegal; “O Corrido do Queimado” relata um caso de justiça popular numa pequena comunidade ao som de um corrido; “Rainha, Escrava ou Mulher” é povoado por fantasmas e uma mãe infanticida, enquanto “Luzes no Céu” me fez recuar à minha infância, numa época de livros aos quadradinhos e de curiosidade pelo inexplicável.

Em matéria de banda desenhada, eu era mesmo uma ingenuazinha: naquela altura gostava das “histórias” de ‘Archie’, da ‘Luluzinha’, das ‘Aventuras do Tio Patinhas’, e não passava disso. Mas havia no quiosque uma publicação em destaque que me atraía e fascinava como a luz às traças: o ‘Semanario de lo Insolito’, uma verdadeira enciclopédia do choque e do terror, um breviário de monstros humanos e fotografias manipuladas de baixíssima qualidade.

I kinda feel if you are a Melchor fan then this collection of tales or accounts ( relatos in Spanish ) is essential reading. These pieces are set in and around Veracruz, Mexico and they provide a little more social context to Melchor's outstanding novels Hurricane Season and Paradais without quite putting you through the emotional wringer that those books do.
However, this is still classic Melchor, it's dark, it's violent. The The Exorcist and Mel Gibson both make an appearance. There is a forsaken ruin, the ominously named, Casa del Diablo. A beauty queen turned murderess is found with bodies in plant pots. This is a bewitching tour of the darkest corners of Veracruz, exposing the violence and corruption in ways that feel fresh and slightly risky both creatively and also probably literally.

As regards the fact vs fiction line, the author has this to say :

The reader of this book will encounter relatos that refuse to enter into discourse with History with a capital H. At the heart of these texts is not the incidents themselves, but the impact they had on their witnesses. The stories are based on events that really happened .. but in their subjectiveness they go beyond straightforward testimony, homing in on the transformative experience of their protagonists

Make of that what you will.

To oczywiście banał, ale to jedna z tych książek, która dobitnie uświadamia jakie mam szczęście, że urodziłam się w Polsce. „To nie jest Miami” to zbiór opowiadań-reportaży o Meksyku, konkretnie o stanie Veracruz. Kiedy googluje się tę nazwę, wyskakują piękne zdjęcia portowego miasta, które zachęcają do odwiedzin. Prawda niestety wygląda nieco inaczej. Książka uderzyła mnie o tyle bardziej, że mam w swoim otoczeniu osobę z Meksyku, która przez wojny narcos nie może obecnie wrócić do rodzinnego miasteczka.

No tienen idea de cómo disfruté este libro. Se me fue como agua entre los dedos de mis manos.

Creo que la forma en que Fernanda escribe es súper fresca pero muy cruda. Directo al grano sin importar a quién le podría doler aquello. Las ambientaciones son fabulosas y además las descripciones de todo son enormemente envolventes.

Hubo dos relatos en específico, o mejor dicho crónicas, que yo creo que es de lo mejor de este año. Hablo de “Reina, esclava o mujer” y “La casa de Estero”. Principalmente la segunda es de lo poco en mi vida que me ha dejado nervioso.

No podía dejar de investigar con todo lo que menciona Fernanda de Veracruz y su cultura. Cuando leí “Temporada de huracanes” pensé que no habría nada que se le acercara pero vaya que este libro está junto a éste.

Me urge que todos lean “La casa del Estero” para poderlo hablar. Simplemente WOW.

Si con "Temporada de Huracanes" Fer escribió un tour guiado hacia lo más profundo del infierno mexicano, "Aquí no es Miami" es una carrera corta, un sprint, unos 10 segundos de voltear a mirar al abismo e intentar salir de él. Brillante y devastador.

Qué privilegio el de leer este libro a pocos meses de su reedición. Fernanda está escribiendo una de las exploraciones más importantes y agudas sobre la violencia en México. Muero por saber qué vendrá.

„Miasto to pole, na którym historie się tworzą i pomnażają. A także umierają. Opowieści giną, bo miasto, sceneria rzeczywistości, jest ciche mimo panującego tu hałasu: nie może opowiedzieć samo o sobie, niczego w ogóle opowiedzieć nie jest w stanie. Historie, jak zauważył kiedyś Sartre, nie są opowiadane przez rzeczywistość, tylko przez ludzki język, przez pamięć.”

Ten cytat najlepiej oddaje charakter „To nie jest Miami”. Autorka w swojej książce zbiera różnorodne historie na temat życia we współczesnym Meksyku, konkretniej w okolicach rodzinnego Veracruz, które pełne jest żywych opowieści na temat lokalnej społeczności. Całość podzielona została na części powiązane ze sobą w mniej lub bardziej oczywisty sposób za pomocą tematu przewodniego: Światła, Ogień i Cień. Nadaje to książce rytmu i zawęża poszczególne historie w pewien krąg tematyczny, nie zamykając ich przy tym w sztywnych ramach i nie odbierając im uniwersalnego charakteru.

Najmocniejszym punktem książki jest jej język, bardzo prosty i plastyczny zarazem, miejscami wręcz gawędziarski. Melchor zdecydowanie potrafi pisać i wciągnąć czytelnika w opowiadaną historię, dzięki czemu krótkie migawki z codziennego życia wydają się niezwykle intensywne i barwne. Widzimy tu mnóstwo przemocy i biedy, wyraźne jest również rozwarstwienie społeczeństwa, któremu przygląda się autorka, skupiając się na jego różnorodności. To nie jest typowy reportaż, do którego byłem do tej pory przyzwyczajony. Okazał się być pewnym powiewem świeżości, który tym bardziej przekonał mnie ostatecznie do sięgnięcia po inne książki Melchor, które co prawda miałem od dawna na oku, jednak brakowało mi motywacji. Teraz na pewno ją mam.

No, this is definitely not Miami. This is a place of violence, hopelessness and death. It’s bleak and dark, dangerous and frightening.

This is a ruthless place inhabited by desperate people. A place of hunger and greed; A place marked by ambition and also by the lack of it.

No, people don’t usually find love in hopeless places like this one, and heaven is definitely not a place on this land. This place might actually be hell as far as I’m concerned.

In this place there are no happy endings. And no time to rest either.

It is a relentless place indeed, but those are the places where the best stories can be found.

Fernanda Melchor te mete de lleno en las entrañas de Veracruz. Historias muy reales que podrían pasar por ficción. Según leía iba buscando más info de los lugares, de los personajes, etc. ya que había ciertas cosas que por su crudeza me resultaban hasta difíciles de creer.
Vidas atravesadas por la violencia, la pobreza, el abandono y en su gran mayoría con la presencia directa del narco.

Quizás “Reina, esclava o mujer”, sea el que más me haya impactado, pero igualmente merecen la pena ser leídos todos y cada uno de ellos.

Me encantó Fernanda Melchor en “Temporada de Huracanes” y no se si me ha gustado aún más aquí. Me atrae la forma e intensidad con la que escribe y me vuelve a dejar con ganas de seguir leyendo.

Human trafficking, drug cartels, corrupt governments, violent vigilante villages, infanticide, even exorcisms… Fernanda Melchor continues to do her bit for the Mexican tourist industry.

But seriously, Melchor is a writer of formidable talent. To my knowledge she currently has three books translated into English, this being the third. All of them are outstanding.

She is a fearless writer; bold, uncompromising and brutal. She wants her readers to feel the reality of life in the parts of Mexico that don’t make global headlines, that we, in other countries don’t hear about. Yeah sure, we have an inclination from movies and fictional literature, but Melchor’s aim is to bring real events into her work to unmask the reality, brutality and often horror of life in some of the more remote and non-tourist parts of Mexico.

In her third book ‘This is not Miami’, Melchor uses the form of ‘crónicas’ - unique to Latin American writing, a blend of reportage, narrative non-fiction using novelistic forms. These short stories, if you will, are all based on fact.

Extreme, devastating, violent and chilling, Fernanda Melchor delivers yet another work of essential reading.

El talento de Melchor para contar historias, envidiable y maravilloso. Estuve siempre comparando con Temporada de Huracanes y para mí ese libro es una cumbre y no se compara. También hay algunos textos que me dieron la impresión de estar incompletos, faltaba algo, pero la mayoría de las crónicas estaban exquisitas. El de la Casa del Diablo no tiene nada que envidiarle a los relatos de la Enríquez y todos los relacionados con la trata de personas y el narco, cuáticos.
Hay que puro leer a la Melchor.

Zapravo iznenađujuće svedenija, ali opet efektna u okvirima odabranog žanra. Zbog jedne priče sam se okretala svako malo iza sebe, čisto da budem sigurna. Odlična.

Lo que más me ha gustado es que después de leerlo me ha dejado pensando por mucho rato en todas las implicaciones de los relatos/crónicas que se incluyen aquí. Un México que todavía duele y sorprende a partes iguales.

Hace tiempo que llevo oyendo hablar de Fernanda Melchor, especialmente de su último libro, 'Temporada de huracanes' y he querido empezar por este libro de relatos publicado con anterioridad.

El estilo de esta autora es muy personal, una especie de crónica periodística seminovelada, que con un lenguaje preciso y austero nos va transmitiendo unos hechos terribles, que no necesitan demasiada elaboración ni comentario.

Cada cuento es como una pieza de un puzzle, sin demasiado sentido por sí misma, pero cuando las juntas todas tienes un retrato auténtico de la ciudad de Veracruz y de toda la violencia que acompaña al narcotráfico y que afecta a las vidas diarias de la gente, aunque se hayan acostumbrado a este estado de cosas.

Muchos de los personajes han aparecido en el periódico local, algunos por diferentes razones, como la bella Evangelina Tejera, que fue reina del Carnaval de Veracruz y más tarde apareció envilecida ante la opinión pública por haber matado a sus dos hijos.

Arquetipos opuestos pero complementarios, máscaras que deshumanizan a mujeres de carne y hueso, y que funcionan como pantallas en donde se proyectan los deseos, los temores y las ansiedades de una sociedad que se pretende un enclave de sensualismo tropical pero que en el fondo es profundamente conservadora, clasista y misógina.

Por las páginas desfilan inmigrantes ilegales, abogados de los narcos, pequeños y grandes delincuentes, prisiones, exorcismos, casas encantadas, playas...

Ya en el primer relato, a través de los ojos de una niña que cree ver ovnis en el cielo de Veracruz y más tarde descubre lo que son, la autora nos introduce a este mundo que ha perdido la inocencia, donde todo es peor de lo que parece y la única solución es resignarse y procurar sobrevivir.

Me ha encantado 'La casa del Estero', que comienza como un relato de género sobre una casa encantada y nos introduce en el mundo de los curanderos y el exorcismo, lo cual nos hace asomarnos a las creencias primigenias de la ciudad.

Estas ceremonias eran - y son aún - tan populares entre los veracruzanos que incluso la Iglesia católica ha empezado a ofertar regularmente misas de sanación y liberación...

En conjunto, un libro magnífico. No le pongo 5 estrellas porque en algunos cuentos la manera de narrar - más cercana a lo experimental y al flujo de conciencia - junto con la introducción de muchos personajes y términos que desconozco, me ha dificultado un poco la lectura, pero creo que ha sido problema mío.

Fernanda Melchor es impresionante. Leí Temporada de huracanes hace unos meses; a pesar de que en Aquí no es Miami se nota una prosa menos pulida que en la novela, tiene algunos relatos buenísimos. Mis favoritos fueron "La casa del Estero" —en el que logra articular dos discursos simultáneos, el real y el fantástico— y "Veracruz se escribe con zeta". Otra cosa valiosa de leer este volumen es que funciona, en cierto sentido, como una declaración de principios narrativos de Temporada de huracanes. Está muy interesante leerlo desde ese punto de vista, porque explica algo de la genealogía de los mitos (el paralelismo entre la filicida de "Reina, esclava o mujer" o la curandera de "La casa del Estero" con la figura de la bruja, por ejemplo) y la importancia que Melchor le da a la oralidad en función de la creación literaria.

Esta fue la lectura que nos recomendó mi queridísima Ana Paula para el club de lectura al que nos metimos. Fernanda Melchor escribe INCREIBLE. Este es un libro de recopilación de crónicas periodísticas e historias de Veracruz. Yo tengo un ligero inconveniente con la ciudad jeje, viví ahí unos meses y quedé algo incómodo con el puerto, así que también me costó leerlo por que siempre decía "ugh... Veracruz...". Pero al final, si es muy recomendable para conocer un poco más de ese estado, de la ciudad, y sobre todo, para que conozcan la pluma de esta gran escritora.

Jeśli obawiacie się, że to kolejny zbiór meksykańskich smętów o narkobiznesie, to mogę uspokoić. Nic bardziej mylnego! Choć dragi stanowią refren w historiach zaprezentowanych przez Fernandę Melchor, to jednak jak na refren przystało nie dominują nad głównym korpusem tekstu. Zresztą polifoniczność jest bardzo mocnym atutem tej książki, aczkolwiek nie da się ukryć, że źródłem większości problemów osób w niej sportretowanych są narkotyki właśnie. Nie mam zielonego pojęcia, czy układ tekstów ma charakter chronologiczny – nie są one datowane - choć odnoszę takie wrażenie, bowiem z każdym kolejnym widać, jak autorka się rozkręca, a jej warsztat dojrzewa. Dlatego jeśli po przeczytaniu opowieści zgromadzonych pod szyldem Woda pociągacie nosem, nie odkładajcie książki, bowiem w części Ogień robi się już naprawdę konkretnie i temperamentnie. Mnie najbardziej przypadły do gustu dłuższe formy narracyjne, które faktycznie przełamują granicę między reportażem a opowiadaniem, choć według mnie Melchor w sposób wyraźny dryfuje w stronę klasycznej prozy fabularnej. Teksty zebrane w ostatniej części zdradzają już dojrzałą twórczość autorki – za pomocą niewielu środków jest w stanie bowiem osiągnąć (i opowiedzieć) naprawdę wiele.

Fernanda Melchor doesn’t do reportage as many know it. What she writes are ‘relatos’, stories based on real incidents that people told the author, personal testimonies and stories based on long interviews. Differently from Svetlana Alexievich (who doesn’t add her own commentary), Melchor crafts tales, some sounding like essays, some others like literary fiction. Horrific, eerie, gut-wrenching, sometimes even supernatural.

The quality of these relatos varies (from very good to superb) since Melchor wrote them from 2002 to 2011, during which time she polished her craft to later write her best book to date, “Hurricane Season”. They are based in and around Veracruz and deal with violence, gang dealings, femicide and people smuggling. As well as coming of age in the hostile environment, when you never know whether you will be safe at the party you’re going to or whether you won’t see a mutilated body upon exiting your school. Often less focused on incidents or tragedies themselves but on the impact they have on people who experienced them, many are deeply lyrical, poetic even as in Mexico, just as in Poland, literary form of reportage (nearly non-existent in the UK and the US) is very appreciated. Reaching to folklore to talk about restless spirits or to intergenerational trauma caused by colonialism, Melchor reflects on the Mexican psyche-shaping implications of all that violence. I was captivated by many of these stories, starting with the first one about young Fernanda who mistook a drug smuggling plane for a UFO, continuing through “The House on El Estero”, a spooky horror story told by Melchor’s first husband, finishing with the very last tale, told in the second person singular (rare in literature and therefore more impressive) with the ending which was like a punch in the stomach and which elevated the whole collection.

A brilliant and impactful collection, it confirmed the talent and skill of Melchor and made me hungry for more (books by Melchor, not violence in Mexico).
