A Taste of the Divine

Rate this book
For her, waking up in Hell is a nightmare.

For him, it means war.

Lilly Carmichael is a twenty-seven-year-old self-proclaimed workaholic who has built a life around her career as an architect and being better than the men she works with rather than maintaining a functioning relationship with one. Priding herself upon her talent and her ability to floor a man’s ego with a single glare, she’s led a simple and focused life establishing herself among her male colleagues…

…until she wakes up in Hell.

Without the time to even truly accept her new reality, Lilly is guided deeper into a realm she had never even thought existed. Everything she’s believed to be true about the world - the universe - is being challenged before her very own eyes.

When she suddenly finds herself standing at the threshold of the Devil’s door, staring into the most gorgeous pair of blue eyes she’s ever seen, Lilly has no idea that she is about to be thrust into a world of myth, power, and love…or that she holds the key to the fate of that world within her very own soul.

2.5 rounding up to three stars

This book was long… too long. I love a thick book but this was unnecessarily long. This could’ve been about 250/300 pages and been a duet rather than one long novel.

I feel like it started slow, which honestly I loved. I was really getting twisted within Hell and Lilly’s reasoning for being there… but I feel like once the Fates came into play it was like “you can’t know why you’re here” to “this is why you’re here” and the book then went equally too slow and too fast (and I feel like if you read it, you know what I’m talking about.)

I wanted to love this so much.. but I just couldn’t get into it as much as I wanted. Like Lilly… girl… you’re in HELL. Like the goody goody yelling at Luc was so annoying to me. She was labeled “ruthless” with no ruthlessness… just feminine energy in a work place (which love for her but she wasn’t ruthless…)

I love the premise- heaven and hell, the war, the soul stuck, the love… but this just really wasn’t my favorite and I just wish the author made this a duet and had it flow better.

Really struggled with this one. The premise was good, and the mythology really well researched, but the characters let it down for me. Lilly is a total Mary Sue - everyone loves her despite the fact that she’s boring and not witty in the slightest. She gets the nickname of ruthless for standing her ground in a male dominated workplace - not sure why, as she didn’t act ruthlessly?? The insta love was off putting, and I ended up just skimming the last half of the book because I wasn’t invested in the characters.

I had big hopes

While I did wind up enjoying this the middle part of this book dragged. I feel like a good portion could have been left it. To me it was way too much filler and unnecessary. This has exactly what I love. Demons, heaven, hell, angels and the devil himself and an interesting take on the creator of heaven and the story of Adam and Eve. I wanted to give up on this book but in the end it pulled through. The ending had everything I wanted. It was fast paced lots of fighting death and destruction and most importantly love.

"“Kindness and love need to be given abundantly. Make it free. Your true wrath is a commodity. Make sure those who receive it are worth the cost.”- Luc Morningstar??? No idea.
This book was sooooo good. Still can't believe i fell for a blonde MMC but here I am. I think there may be a sequel? I'm here for it but this is hella good by itself too. I like long books. I like them dense plots. Kindle app continuous scrolling. This was lovely.

Great debut novel by Chelsea Adler! I really loved the mixing of different mythologies, religious and spiritual elements. The novel was a bit slow to start, but it eventually picked up and I enjoyed it to the last page. Every time I tried to guess where the plot was going, I ended up being wrong so the plot twists were twisting! Very excited to read the next book ☺️

a must read!!!

I absolutely adored this book! The interesting take on hell and heaven the author portrays is so captivating and thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about a FMC that has her own strength, and that her partners power only ENHANCES her, never dimming her own light. I cannot WAIT for the second book!

I agree with other people's sentiment that this book felt too long. I think for a self published debut novel it's solid but could have benefitted from a round of developmental editing.

I am/was excited about the premise of the book and the core storyline but there were times when I would look at how much was left in the book and be surprised that I was only 40-50% of the way through it.

At first I thought this book wasn't going to be for me, but after I actually got into it I tell you I could not put this book down. While this book was long it was really cool to see not only the characters grown but the author herself. This book is beautiful and one I can not recommend enough and I can not wait until the next book!

Unfortunately I didn't finish this book. The storyline is incredible, and I love the characters. But I found the pace too slow and the book way too long. I found it too descriptive which is why I struggled to get into it.

I’m sorry but the grip this book has on me…I’ll never recover. From start to finish I was HOOKED. The smut to plot ratio is 10/10. The FMC is so badass and actually relatable?? I loved it loved it LOVED IT. I can’t wait for the rest of the series to come!!

The concept was really interesting and the characters were likable despite their reputations, but the pacing was very slow. The book seemed far longer than necessary, and I felt like it left off with unfinished business despite the length.

Perfection!

Absolutely amazing. I want more of this world. I want to see them succeed. But most of all, I want more of Alder's writing.

I absolutely devoured this book in just a couple of days, but would have done it all in one setting if I could have.

Like a combo of Twilight & Court of Mist, but smuttier and with a healthy relationship.
