Rate this book
Tommy is orphaned during the Blitz in Clydebank, Scotland and is brought up by his aunt and uncle on a farm in Kinross shire. The story follows his new life in the village of Blairingone; in a small village school; the struggles he encounters and the friends he makes. The story ends where he achieves the first stage of his ambition to be a doctor. The story gives an insight into village life in the 1940s as readers become familiar with farming and village life in wartime. Tommy, a keen musician and singer rapidly becomes part of the school and village and takes his place in farm life. His aunt and uncle learn what it is like to bring up a young boy and see him through the grief and loss of his parents and sisters. This is a down-to-earth story of triumph over loss and disappointment coupled with hope for a brighter future.
