Vivi Conway #2

Vivi Conway and the Haunted Quest

Rate this book
The gang have been hunting for Isabella for weeks, but there’s no sign of her in the Unlands. They can’t even find the portal through to Annwn. And Vivi hasn’t told the rest of the gang about what happened with the villainous Arawn appearing in her dream. She definitely hasn't mentioned how scared she is to fall asleep, in case he reappears. Even Nimue has been quiet. As much as Vivi wants to hope that it’s all over, part of her knows it isn’t...

On Dara’s birthday, an invitation comes from their cousin Violet; come stay on Bardsey Island for a week, stay at their cottage, and celebrate Halloween. And bring all your friends! Vivi can’t refuse an opportunity to go back to Wales, and her friends are immediately excited for star-spotting, foraging, hiking, and just general adventuring. Little do they know, they are about to be thrown into a huge high-stakes treasure hunt, with the fate of the world resting on them (again). And Vivi’s feeling that Arawn is just waiting to reappear is only growing stronger...

Hello! Thanks for joining me in the 5 star recs zone. Please feel free to follow - I don't tend to add people back as I don't actually use Goodreads myself any more. I just come back here to pop down the recommendations that I post on Twitter and Instagram where I'm @littlehux so you're better off finding me there as I really don't use Goodreads much at all any more.

You can't just end a book like that??? What am I meant to do with myself until 2025?

This series is so special to me and has been such a huge comfort to me. It's funny and emotional in equal measure and has amazing queer and disabled rep. This installment introduces Meredith, Dara's cousin, who's autistic like Vivi and also has EDS, and I LOVE her. Plus of course I want my own Gelert.

I have quite literally JUST finished this, so this review is very much a jumble of my immediate thoughts, most of which are OH MY GOD EXCUSE ME WHAT??

Somehow, this was even better than book one - which was also amazing, so that's a feat and a half in itself - and really upped the stakes. These kids are going through so much and EXCUSE ME THAT ENDING?? I loved the whole magical treasure hunt vibes of this book, and especially loved that we're back in Wales. The little tidbits of Welsh scattered throughout were so fun to translate in my head, and also just funny! There's a point where a character shouts "araf!" at someone, because they read it on a road and thought it might be helpful somehow. I cackled.

Shout out to Gelert, who has very firmly joined Garth Nix's Mogget on my list of 'favourite magical animal companions who are a little grumpy and also intensely relatable'. I want a big ghostly Irish wolfhound now, too.

I'm just so excited to see where this series goes next, because HOLD THE PHONE THAT ENDING?? WHERE ARE WE GONNA GO FROM THERE?? I need to know.

I loved this! A sequel that just filled me with joy! Full of action, adventure, magic, friendship and gorgeous characters. The rep in these books makes me so happy - it’s not pigeon-holed, it’s natural and it’s purposeful. Honestly, the ending just made me go ‘NOOOOOO’. Hux has a total winner here and I can’t wait for the final instalment!

instant kid’s classic, as spooky as the dark is rising, eerie as the owl service, and haunting as the snow spider

LIZZIE WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO US OH MY GOD??? I JUST SPENT OVER AN HOUR JUST PROCESSING THAT ENDING WHAT DID I JUST READ???
absolutely an 11/10 though, no issues no problems just pure enjoyment and then that insanity at the end was just perfection even if it broke my brain a little thinking of the wait I'll have to endure now until the next book releases....

Characters where top-notch again, and with the addition of Meredith - another Autistic person who is also an ambulatory wheelchair user with EDS! Same with book 1, none of the representation feels forced or out of place at all, it's all so wonderfully written!
Gelert I still love, I read his lines in the voice of Drippy from Ni No Kuni in all honesty haha

Not much character development in this one, but I don't think that's too needed. There was a lot in book 1, and this book is a lot more focused on evolving the plot and diving deeper into the world building. And it was super cool! A lot more into the mythology, calling out different aspects of it and really just expanding it all out more with a fun little treasure hunt.

Honestly, I just love this series so much. The welsh and autistic rep at the same time is beautiful especially with queer rep ontop as well. It's a combination I never thought I'd see, reflecting myself, but I'm just so so glad it's there. There's quite a lot of queer rep, more disabled rep is appearing, but still very little Welsh rep so seeing the wonderful language used so much in this book, I really hope to see more next book!!!
