Camile Thompson loves three things: her best friends Kat and Abbie, planning events, and getting revenge.

When she starts her dream job at the elite Long Beach Island Beach Club, she makes a pact with her besties: For the first time in ten years, she'll try to be more open and make friends. No cutting people off for minor infractions, no closing herself off, and absolutely no tests to prove loyalty.

When Cami strikes up a friendship with her intern Olivia, it's anything but smooth sailing when the mean girls of the Beach Club show up. They love making people miserable, and they have their sights set on Cami.

Cami quickly slips back into her old ways of petty payback. The only ally she seems to be able to tolerate is the hot bartender who works across the street.

But when his Beach Club connections come to light, Cami realizes this may be the cruelest summer ever.

Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.

Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Her entire life she’s crafted stories in her mind, begging to be released but it wasn’t until recently she finally gave them the reigns.

I’m so grateful you’ve agreed to take this journey with me.

No third act breakup. Healthy communication throughout the book. He’s down BAD for her from the beginning. She’s a badass. I AM OBSESSED.

Camile is so unapologetically herself, it had me cheering throughout. And the Mean Girls inspired aspect was done SO WELL. Morgan’s books are everything. Wow.

Tropes:
- age gap
- he falls first
- friends to lovers (kind of)
- mean girls inspired

"The best revenge, Cami, is letting them see you thrive when they wanted to watch you fail spectacularly."

I decided to pick this up at the last minute in hopes for a cute summer read, and that is exactly what I got with a side of revenge. If you like the movie Mean Girls, then you will enjoy this as it's a retelling of sorts. There were times, though, when it was too much like the movie being copied.

Cruel Summer is book two of the Season of Revenge series that can be read as a stand alone and is an age gap, enemies dad, rom-com romance that was fun with some tension, banter, and drama that had me smiling and giggling at times.

Camile "Cami" Thompson has just started a new job for the summer at the Beach Club in Long Beach Island, planning events to help grow her network. Her two best friends Abbie and Kat are worried about her because she always tests people and pushes them away before getting to know them since she was hurt in the past. They get her to agree to try and make some new friends. Cami sets out to do just that, except she encounters "the mean girls" of the club, which are the daughter and step-twins of her new boss's daughter that she is planning a wedding for and it's the largest event of the summer. Zachary Anderson is the bartender across the street and becomes the one she confides in when things are going wrong. He became interested in her the first night they met, and she kept turning him down for a date until one night she said yes to going home with him. Only the next morning she is faced with one of the bitch pack who isn't only her intern but also Zach's daughter Olivia who had returned home early from her mother's. She's not going to let it come between her and Zach and is definitely not going to let them ruin her opportunity and fail. Zach's daughter decides she's had enough of her step-sisters and their bitch pack and joins forces with Cami and Abbie for a plan of revenge but at what cost? Will Cami lose Zach and her opportunity in the end?

But if you keep calling me dimples, I’m turning you over my knee and spanking your ass.

“Baby, a man like me wants to show off a woman like you. A man like me knows a woman like you will always wear whatever the fuck she wants, and a man like me knows if he wants to keep a woman like you, he’d better learn how to fight.”

From the very start, Zach and Cami had great communication with each other that stayed consistent. He also fell first, which, if I'm being honest, always gets me, and for some reason, I loved the dad jokes he told. We got to see more of the side characters from the previous book, I especially loved seeing more of Damien and Abbie. There were some grammatical errors that, for the most part, I was able to overlook and enjoy it. Though I did like Tis the Season for Revenge more. I hope that we get to see more of them and get a book for Kat in the future.

3.5 ⭐️ this was a fun and spicy summer read!!

love the idea of a mean girls inspired book filled w taylor swift references. i liked the characters and i loved getting to see my tis the season for revenge babies!!!

cami was amazing because she was trying so hard and she was really flawed in the best of ways. and zach was adorable but i feel like we didn’t get enough of him for me to fall in love? idk.

this was a bit too long for me, and a lot of parts threw me off. like the constant “angel” and “daddy” pet names… no thank u.

but cami’s badass “be nice to me. i could be ur future step mom” line…. yes.

overall, a good time but nothing too memorable.

things that i can't stand about this book

1- the mean girls thing🤨 i know it's literally concept of the book but it wasn't realistic. i'm sure there are people who loves being mean to each other but the rich, blonde mean girl stereotype and the way they were acting like they're in highschool was too much for me😶

2- him taking pictures and videos of them having sex 🤢 now that's a personal preference and i just didn't like it. but the worst part for me was that he was taking pictures with all of his girlfriends(deleting them later when they broke up) but you know i was expecting heroine to be more special....😒

3- Cami(heroine) being immature 😬 she was sleeping with her nemesis-intern's dad and when the intern(Olivia) learned this Cami was making faces at her and the scene was so immature i couldn't continue more😐

😐

i have now read all but one morgan elizabeth books, 12 of them. this one was by far the lowest i have ever rated one. i genuinely did not understand why so much of it was focused on petty “mean girls” and hardly no romance besides awful dad jokes…

i think tis the season for revenge was so good because it put a spin on legally blonde without throwing it so much in your face. this had direct quotes from the movie, references, and actor/character name dropping.

cami was also supposed to be 28 years old but acted so immaturely yet she was rewarded by it every single time. also the way that they treated olivia had me thinking she was like 17ish year old, but she’s 23??? sorry this book was just not for me at all.

”The best revenge, Cami, is letting them see you thrive when they wanted to watch you fail spectacularly.”

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Angst/Tension: 🔥/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5

What To Expect:
✔️ Enemy’s dad
✔️ MMC with golden retriever energy who likes to make “home movies” 😏🔥
✔️ FMC whose a sassy commitment-a-phobe
✔️ Mean girls retelling
✔️ Age gap
✔️ Summer romance

Overall this was pretty good, and I liked both of the main characters especially. However, I felt like the “mean girls” were incredibly immature for their age. I lowkey think it would’ve been better if they had been older and friends of the bride/in the bridal party/bridesmaids, rather than younger than Cami. Maybe if they were like trophy wives with nothing better to do than be petty and clichy then it would’ve been better imo. Think Lilly Vanderwoodson from Gossip Girl and those mums/wives energy.

There were a couple of times where the mean girls references were a bit too ‘on-the-nose’ for me, and exactly copied from the movie and that jarred me a bit. I also think Glenn and Cici’s characters were a bit redundant in the end which was a shame.

The spice was well-written, and Zach was hot afffffffff. It made me so happy when Cami finally gave in and went home with him 🙈. Also, the Aperol Spritz?! Iykyk 😩

All in all though, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it for sure. Tis the season for revenge still takes the cake for me though!

Update 8/31/23 : I really wanted to try and be more objective with this book so I finished it. It deserves the same rating, just from the terrible editing alone.

1) The locations changed from generally “Long Island”, to (more specifically) Long Beach, NY, and then even New Jersey at times. I’m shocked how horrible this editing was.

2) Zach/Zack (another lack of editing in this), is such an underdeveloped character. I loath getting the POV of the LI just so we know what he’s thinking at a specific moment when most of the book is one character. Just stick to Cami.

3) The romance was lacking because the plot swallowed it completely. The plot was also way more Cinderella Story based than Mean Girls. It was marketed poorly and annoying. Also, the movie “White Chicks” stood out as a fair parallel for this than Mean Girls.

4) The plot: Not relatable and silly.

5) Smut: Very good and the only thing she seemed to invest her time in 😂 She knows her sex scenes and gets that credit every time.

6) For my original review, look below.

————————————

8/28: DNF.

This is going to sound extremely harsh but I need to express how much of a disappointment this book was for me. I love her books, Tis the Season was amazing and hilarious and so cute. But this book was such a let down that I’m shocked she even wrote this.

I appreciate authors writing about places they have never lived in, I appreciate authors including more POC. But this book reads like a fan fiction and someone who never researched Long Island in their life.

I am biracial, I am from NYC, I have also lived in Long Beach. This book basically screams “tell me you’re a white girl from New Jersey without telling me you’re a white girl from New Jersey.” Cami is a woman with “dark skin”, but her heritage is never mentioned. Being a POC makes you have a certain perspective on the world around you. You approach situations from a certain type away. In this case, rich white people.

Now, I can understand if Morgan Elizabeth didn’t want to focus on race being a factor here and it’s just supposed to be a fun summer romance read, however she did a really bad job making me even want to continue this story. She couldn’t even research how a woman of color does her hair or skin care. Not once was a satin pillowcase mentioned! NOT ONCE (i’m trying to be funny here). But seriously, the lack of genuine representation here, for both the FMC and the setting of the story, it seems completely careless. Why couldn’t she have just picked The Hamptons like everyone else does? Or, if you want to try something new… RESEARCH THE DAMN ISLAND AND ITS DEMOGRAPHICS!!

One last example, Cami says “I’m on this little island”…. Ummm excuse me? The island is 120 miles long…. HENCE THE NAME. It takes 3 hours to get from the east side of Queens to Montauk WITHOUT TRAFFIC, and there is ALWAYS traffic. Do. Your. Research!

Moving on, 10 chapters in and I couldn’t deal with the lack of editing. Did she even pay attention? Cami is a believable character but she sucks. She really fucking sucks. She takes the advice of her friends in the stupidest ways and applies them to the wrong people, when she’s “so knowledgeable of how these people are”. She reveals how she lost her virginity with The Ex that ruined her life, to two CLEARLY horrible people that are CLIENTS of hers. She doesn’t know how to be professional at all when she’s such a “badass boss woman” vibe. She can’t even speak to her fucking employer about how uncomfortable she is from the beginning because “she knows how to handle these types of people.

No, no you don’t. I’ve worked for people like this, and Cami would have been eaten alive at this point.

I really cannot stand the choices she makes, including getting shitfaced the night before this giant career opportunity. WHAT?! Are you 17? Idc how excited you are about this new job; you care enough about not making Damian look bad but you make sure to get completely hammered to the point of an obvious hangover?

I really wish the author thought more about preparing this book. Of all the chick flicks out there, I’m not sure Mean Girls was the best route. Legally Blonde had an entire point of not judging someone because they’re blond or love pink. To not judge someone by the money they may or may not have. This book is completely about the opposite. I don’t get how I can love the main character when her backstory wasn’t in the very beginning like it was for Abbie.

The editing was bad, the research was non existent, and it reads like something she tried to make sure was out for this summer instead of taking the time to release it the following year.

Do better. Please.

I really, really enjoyed this book…

Maybe I’m just Morgan Elizabeth’s target audience - millennials who have favorite movies and musicians, who find nostalgia when they’re represented and get gitty when they recognize references.

📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Cruel Summer by Morgan Elizabeth

📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Seasons of Revenge character series. Book 2.

📗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: E-book on Kindle. 🆓 on KU.

📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Contemporary romance

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Just for the summer, age gap, instalove, vacation vibes, female friendship.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Cami gets the job of a lifetime managing events for an upscale beach club. But the rich and ultra rich come with drama, petty pranks and mean girls everywhere. Her only respite? The hot bartender who is spending every minute convincing her to give him a chance.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I’m being fair when I point out that Morgan Elizabeth might just hit the right spot for me personally.

Strong pop culture references. Independent femail main characters. Beautiful settings based in the Jersey Shore. Sincerely hot spice. The last two books I’ve read from her - this one and All My Love - have been right up my alley.

I loved Cami in this book - and I loved the subplot that was super Mean Girls coded. Zach was an absolutely quintessential man written by a woman - an ultimate book boyfriend.

I read this book because I have been SUPER intrigued by The Fall of Bradley Reed, and the author herself told me I’d appreciate it more if I read this. So I thought it was almost a throw away - but man it had my attention and I loved it.

After loving Tis the Season for Revenge so much, I expected so much more out of Cruel Summer. I don’t think I could have been more disappointed.

I HATE huge age gaps, and I was completely blindsided with one in Cruel Summer (45/28). I’m also not a big fan of of the single dad trope, and I was blindsided with that one too. The “Mean Girls” inspiration was not my favorite story line. In fact, this is a romance novel, but the romance wasn’t the center of attention. Top all of that off with typos and grammar issues galore, and you have a heaping pile of this book 💩. I considered DNF at 8% when “than” was used instead of “then,” and I truly wish I would have.

ˏˋ°•* "Cruel summer" - Taylor Swift
"Camile came into my bar like a fucking tornado and for the two weeks since, I haven't been able to think of anything but her."
౨ৎ my thoughts
I REALLY LIKE THIS ONE!
it's not like my last reads that lit have my entire heart but it was fun, enjoyable, lovable and very good read.
Cami comes across as a bit jaded with that classic black cat vibe, yet she was incredibly fun and brilliantly cunning. I had just been wishing for more books to abandon the whole "bigger person" trope and instead serve up unapologetic revenge—and Cami absolutely nailed it. this was exactly what i needed as i'm very busy and in exams period. Plus, there was Zach, the adorable and hot golden retriever of a sidekick, grinning his way through all the madness.

Cami embodies the essence of a girl's girl, yet she carries a guarded nature, hesitant to let others get too close due to past painful experiences. Despite this, she exudes strength and confidence while grappling with anxiety, which adds depth to her character through moments of heartfelt vulnerability. Her dynamic with Zach really gets me — his genuine admiration for her stood out in a refreshing way. It was delightful to see such a healthy portrayal of a man being wholly obsessed with his partner, something that feels all too rare but truly impactful.

The sex scenes in the novel are quite steamy and intense. However, the images and video kink that both characters enjoyed didn't really appeal to me, it's def not for me and i didn't love that part. Throughout the story, I was somewhat anxious that the twins might discover these videos and use them against Cami. Thankfully, this doen't happen. I also appreciated the conversation between Cami and Zach regarding these explicit images, as it explored important themes of boundaries and consent.

ialso t definitely felt like their love story was somewhat overshadowed by the mean girls and revenge storyline (I was craving and expecting so much more from their relationship). The love confession also had so much potential to be better. i just maybe wanted more of them like be in love etc.

This book carries a fun, Mean Girls-inspired vibe, much like how the first one had a Legally Blonde influence. However, Staceigh and Laceigh felt overly exaggerated, and it was a bit challenging to believe they were in their early twenties, acting that way. Similarly, Cami being 28 and even considering hanging out or befriending them in the first place seemed a bit far-fetched.

little shoutout to abbie and damien cause i love them so much and i loved readig their names in the book even if it's like two times in the whole book, which is totally right cause this book isn't about them.

4.25 stars - this is a must add to your beach read list!!

cami's summer is looking up when she's starting a new job as an events planner for a country club that just so happens to be across the street from a bar staffed by a hot, older bartender she met the night before her first day. but, little does she know she's in for an interesting summer since a few members take an interest in seeing her fail and her hot bartender happens to be one of their dads.

this was so fun to read. cami's a little jaded and has black cat energy but she was so fun and cunning. i was just saying i wanted more books to ditch the whole 'bigger person' nonsense and give me unapologetic revenge and that's exactly what cami delivered. and adorable, hot, golden retriever zach was her sidekick through it all, smiling through the crazy.

i only wish we got a little more of their connection one on one since sometimes it took a back seat to the revenge plot but such a fun read.

I didn't like Cami in the first book and I was hoping this book will change what I think about her. It did, but not so much. I understood the reason why she doesn't want to trust other people and it's totally valid. What I don't get is the way she acted throughout the book. I mean, she's almost 30 years old and most of the time she doesn't act her age. It's also a good thing that I found more people annoying than her.

One of the things I liked about this book is Zach's cheesy lines and how he is towards Cami. He's so sweet and I love how he gives no room for miscommunication when it comes to him and Cami. And I liked how I also I get to see crumbs of Damien and Abbie!

I also found a lot of editing errors or whatever. It's a tiny bit distracting but it's fine though since I still enjoyed reading this. Also, hello, what was that ending? Are we going to get Olivia's book too or is it Kat's turn to fall in love?

Just Okay

Honestly this book was not the book for me, there were entirely too many grammar and spelling mistakes throughout the book, the storyline was “Meh” at best. I am a grown woman and this story was the movie means girls with some spicy scenes, so with that being said it felt like this book was a spicy YA book, I didn’t enjoy feeling like I was reading about my high school bullies at all! The most interesting parts of this book were Cami and Zach other than that I was completely uninterested with the rest of the story. Now I’m not going to tell anyone not to read it but it definitely was not my kind of story.

I really loved a lot of things about this book. I love that Cami is vulnerable and aware of her problems. It makes her more likable and makes me want to be on her side right away. She’s trying so hard 😭 And she totally redeemed herself after Tis the Season for Revenge. The spice was good, as it always is with Morgan’s books, but it wasn’t hitting like it usually does. Zach’s kink was hot, but this actually felt like the least spicy book I’ve read from this author. I feel like there was a lot of buildup before the romance. Too much. Like it almost doesn’t feel like a romance novel because there’s so much time spent on Cami’s job and her personal growth. Which is great. But also I’m here to read romance. I felt like the romance was the side plot and the stuff with Cami’s job and friendships was the main plot. And again, it’s amazing to see a book that focuses on a woman’s career and friendships, but unfortunately, for me personally, I needed more time to be spent on the relationship between Cami and Zach. Their love didn’t feel as convincing and important as the love between most of Morgan’s couples do. I felt like we didn’t get as many spicy scenes as I usually expect from this queen of an author. And a lot of the relationship was teased at through text messages. Things were often mentioned, but then we didn’t get to actually see them happen on-page. Which is a bummer because Morgan is an amazing writer and does fun, emotional, spicy relationships so well. I was missing the connection I usually feel with her couples. I will still read anything this woman puts out, but I just wanted more from this book.

The main character’s in her late 20s, but talks and acts like she’s in high school. The spice was fine, but I almost DNF’d based on the mean girls/revenge plot alone. It was too much. To top it off, the constant typos and grammatical errors took me out of the story so many times. I’ve never read a book with so many typos! 🥴

Writing this while I am sobbing because this might be the most beautiful cheesy little thing MS ELIZABETH MORGAN ever conspired.

Originally I wasn’t too sure I would be into it. I am not really into reading about women pranks and petty digs that’s why I read the third installment first and I absolutely fell in love with Cami’s character that I decided to give this ago. It’s so much more!! So glad I fucking did because this here, Cami girl is my ride or die. My mvp. I know she has some scorpio in her because her and I, we forgive we don’t forget and we simply never let it go.

Cami is me and I am her. She is the woman who will run the show but have a panic attack at the bathroom and social anxiety. Sometimes we forgot who we are and that’s simply the baddest bitch in town. Periodt. I love her character so much I can go on and on. She is guarded and challenging and interesting and always ready to put on a show.

An epic woman like her only deserves an EPIC man. Enter 45 year old daddy dimples. God, who knew I would be such a whore for cheesy dad jokes? I must admit that man got me when he first called her angel and made sure she eats well. What can I say my love language is simple. Zach sees a challenge and says bet, because he is in to win Cami. He simply sees her. Time and time again. The smallest little things, made me scream. I am a grown ass woman blushing from notes on a cardboard coffee cup ughhhhhhh.

The. Fucking. Smut. Fucking jail. All I am saying is I would bend my back any day anytime for this man and this man only.

I loved how fun and yet so endearing and emotional this book was!!! It’s such a beautiful experience! Beautiful friendships and just ugh…girlhood you guys😫❤️‍🩹

Aahhhhh screaming from the rooftops for everyone to read this book 🩵

Where to even start with this book, I loved it so much and time and time again Morgan solidifies her spot as one of my favourite authors and I already know this is going to be fighting The Playlist as my favourite book of hers 🙈

Cami is such a badass and I love the revenge trope so much call me petty but I’m 100% here for it

Zach is such a sweetheart when he’s with Cami and I just loved every moment of those dad jokes and the support he endlessly shows her but also 👀 let’s not forget about the videos 🥵

What to expect from this masterpiece:
💖 Age Gap
💖 Summer Romance
💖 Enemies Dad
💖 Mean Girls inspired
💖 FMC afraid to commit
💖 MMC is a total golden retriever
