Ever since she can remember, Sonia has had to abide by her parents' ridiculously unfair rules like not being allowed to date or even kiss a guy. The only reason she thinks she's being held to these rules is when Sonia was eight, she took a sip of her friend’s drink, causing her friend to do everything Sonia asked.
As her eighteenth birthday approaches, Sonia is finally about to learn why; she's a Huldra, a dangerous, yet seductive and magical Norse forest maiden who with just one kiss, has the ability to control humans and appropriate parts of their souls. Keeping the rules hasn't been a problem for Sonia because she's never really been attracted to any guy.
But when Anthony transfers to her school, every last rule flies out the window. There's just something about Anthony that she can't resist—the way he seems to be hiding a deep, dark secret that is connected to her, the way his mysterious blue eyes cause her heart to beat more rapidly, his athletic, god-like physique.
The closer she gets to her eighteenth birthday—the moment she matures into a fully realized Huldra—the harder it becomes to follow her parents' rules. As graduation day approaches, Anthony starts to show interest in her, but she would never have guessed how life-changing and how dangerous Anthony's secrets are, and how overwhelmingly intense a relationship with him could be.

Wraithsong is a fairytale with a dark twist. I loved reading this book, and honestly I have a hard time writing a review because I liked it so much. The supernatural creatures were very original, which is saying something because I read a ton of books in this genre. I think that the concept of Huldras was great and the background on the creatures was done really well. I found the book fascinating.
I wasn't 100% sold on the romance, or some of Anthony's actions, but overall I would say that this was a great book. This was one of those books that I saved like 30 pages at the end because I didn't want it to be over. I have myself convinced that my boyfriend is a Huldu! I would suggest this book for someone who likes paranormal romance, but is looking for something original. I can't wait to read the sequel!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Wraithsong by E. J. Squires is the first book in the projected Desirable Creatures series. The riveting story and the memorable characters along with the captivating setting is a big plus for the book. As the author is an unknown quantity as far as I’m concerned, my initial foot-dragging of going through the book gave way to curiosity with this dramatic opening preface: Eve, mother of all living, labored and toiled long days and nights. One day, God came down and visited her. Embarrassed that she only had enough time to clean seven of her thirteen children, she hid the six soiled ones from him. God found them, and reprimanded Eve for having been ashamed of her own flesh and blood. “Those you have hidden from me…” God said, “…they will stand out from the rest of mankind. I will clean them for you so that all men and women will aspire to be that which you have cast aside. From this day forward, they will be known as the Huldra, meaning secret desire.”
Wraithsong is about Sonia, a seventeen-year-old girl who learns that she is no ordinary girl. During the last few weeks of her senior year at Sarasota High, as she turns eighteen Sonia realizes she is none other than Huldra with many special powers, one of them being making men do her bidding. With a simple kiss she can alter someone’s existence forever. She falls in love with Anthony, her senior at school, but he has some powerful secrets of his own as he is resistant to her power. Sonia and Anthony shared a history that is not at all favorable for love. Anthony’s mother and Sonia’s mother waged deadly battle over Huldra’s gifts. Wraithsong is an incredible and mind-boggling paranormal romance story that many young adult readers as well as others will relish.
The character of Sonia/Huldra is fully developed and blends beautifully with the storyline. Other characters, including Anthony, play pivotal roles in the story which has its twists and turns, taking the reader on an adventure which many are unlikely to forget. By injecting Norse mythology into the story, Wraithsong by E. J. Squires has encompasses all possible dimensions in a story. It is a young adult fantasy book wrapped in adventure, drama, mythology, romance and suspense.
Wraithsong is the name of an invisible Island Where HULDRAS and HULDUS take place , the descriptions that are in the BOOK ,are amazing . Sonia is the main character , where she falls in love with " Anthony" and her life changes completely when her mum is kidnapped and taken to the invisible island (Wraithsong) .
I didn't like this book , I loved it !!! it was well written , has unique imagination that every Teen would love to read ( I recommend this book to every living one )
WRAITHSONG has just about everything I look for in a book and some I didn't even expect! I must say this is one of my top favs, it had interesting twists mixed with very unique ideas, it took me by the first page, keeps making you turn the page. Even though I don't like Fantasy stuff, this book was modern and I really did relate to the main character. She was not one of those cliche girl characters.
I'm growing a serious addiction to this book, defiantly gonna have a second read. It contains lovely quotes. It was so exiting and unpredictable that i was so desperate for the outcome ,to know what was going to happen and in the same time I didn't want to finish reading it.
The book cover. . . hmmm, I always judge a book by it's cover XD and I would call this one a one of a kind.
The writing was well preformed, bunch of vocabulary rubbed at my eyes but it was kind of easy to read. The only think I didn't like about the book was the love story, the boy wasn't a jerk or anything but I found it too much at some parts. And wished the motherly mound to be stronger.
My fav point about this book :
* Love the cover ( amazing dress, I even imagine myself in it)
* Love the way she put her other book series name ( immerse myself in reading my fav new book series- A Viking Blood Saga ) i think it was very smart and stylish!
*This quote is amazing ! ( “In life, the test comes first, the lesson later.” )
If I ever enter a book store or a library and see Her name on a book I would fight to get it without even reading what it is about! Really good writing and gripping plot.
This book was just AMAZING !!!!I can't wait to get the second one ( Blufire ) .
Glad it was offered as a freebie but not one I'd recommend
This book did have potential but it just fell flat for me. It was definitely YA and quite predictable. The ending just pissed me off. It won't be a series I continue or recommend.
Fans of supernatural romance and high school drama will enjoy the story of seventeen-year-old Sonia discovering her powers. Sonia is a Huldra, a Norse supernatural with the ability to make others (especially men) do her bidding. When she finally has a crush on a classmate, Anthony, she notices that he shares her interest in Norse mythology, and is strangely immune to her powers. But it’s not all smooth sailing between the two teenager supernaturals, it seems that Anthony’s mother and Sonia’s mother are deadly enemies in a battle over Huldra gifts and how best to use Huldra powers. Sonia and Anthony must figure out where their loyalties lie. Their adventure takes them through an invisible island, imprisonment, meeting Dark Elves and Light Elves, and many other challenges before resolution.
I liked that it was a twist on the typical vampire or werewolf storyline. I particularly enjoyed Sonia’s mom awkwardly explaining that one of the side effects of a Huldra’s coming-of-age can include being a bit oversexed, and that even kissing a boy will enslave him in her Huldra powers. Aww, poor Mom has to have the birds and the bees (and the ancient enslavement of men) talk with her teenage daughter!
I believe that the kind of books that teach you something while keeping you entertained are the best. While reading Wraithsong, I learned more about Norse mythology while dancing to the twists and turns of the plot. I was left being unable to assume which step the plot would take next – and that’s exactly how I love to be when I read a book.
Not only does the story thrill you, the characters are dynamic, and grow gracefully within the storyline. I personally enjoyed all the descriptive exchanges between Sonia and Anthony – particularly the romantic ones!
While most books would have me taking a break every 30 minutes or so, Wraithsong had my unwavering attention. It was light and easy to read, so I would highly recommend it for young adults – but I wouldn’t spare young-at-heart adults who love a quick literary adventure.
Absolutely cannot wait for the next installment. Definitely a must-read!
I love the plot line in Wraithsong! It jumped from being contemporary teenage romance to paranormal suspense! It was lots of fun reading this. Sonia and Anthony are great characters to cling onto. I felt that they there was much more than met the eye very early. But I wasn't ready for the turn of events that was about to unfold. It quickly turns to high-stakes, life and death crisis when Sonia's cousins are killed and her mom gets abducted.
There are more books in the series, so I will definitely be seeking them out and getting more of this collection. Wraithsong: Desirable Creatures Series- Book 1 kept me captivated from beginning to end. The author, E. J. Squires was so creative and inventive, and I could tell she invested a great amount of time in composing such a well-written and thoughtful body of work.
When I was a tutor, I had a client who was behind on reading level. Basically, the school let her down and it was my job to teach her how to read at the appropriate level. One of the more painful things I had to endure was Twilight and the various side-novels that spawned. What I wouldn't give for a good well written story in the Young Adult area.
This is the first book I have read by E.J. Squires and I have to say I am impressed. Her imagination and storytelling ability is pretty well displayed for this book. For instance, I loved her plot line—a coming of age story with a mythological twist. I grew up loving mythology and she brings that world to life; however, she also brings her characters to life. How many of us might not have quite fit in during high school? Well, the protagonist finds herself in that situation. She has one friend in high school, her 18th birthday is coming up along with graduation and the big dance--to make matters more hectic she has never kissed a boy or even gone out on a date.
The awkward years of a teen growing up is captured well with this book and you find yourself feeling for the characters, or even remembering parts of your own childhood through the book. To make Sonia's outcast feeling complete, she finds out that she isn't even human. That's right not only does she not quite fit in for school, but she doesn't even fit in to the human race. The pressure of trying to fit in is examined in this novel. The basic question we all face growing up: Just how much are you willing to give of yourself just to fit in. For some of us, it was a question of popularity; however, for Sonia it is a question of survival.
We follow Sonia through a typical day at her school; a day that includes bullying. As all too common in today's society, the bully is the popular kid picking on someone she doesn't like. In this case, it is the cheerleader picking on Sonia. Things get a bit heated and, also like today's schools, the victim is punished while the bully walks free.
Sonia's punishment for spitting in her bully's face is to work the green house after school. She dreads going there to work with some crusty old guy only to find that the person she has to work with is the new hunk, Anthony.
Sonia and Anthony do not hit it off very well when they first meet, but eventually they grow on each other. They get close to each other until Sonia remembers her parent’s rule of No Boys. That’s right, Sonia can’t date; she can’t hug; she can’t kiss; she can’t even high-five a boy without her mother freaking out. How is she going to explain her new found attraction to the mysterious Anthony?
Her mother’s rules might sound cruel or just something over-protective from a recent widower, but the reasoning lies behind the mythological aspect of this novel. You see, Sonia—and her mother—are Huldras. A being who can seduce a human and turn one into her slave with a kiss. The power that Sonia has goes well beyond seduction, but her mother insists that Sonia must wait until her 18th birthday to find more about her powers—powers that can be used to enslave all of humanity—powers that will slowly start to control Sonia as she nears her 18th birthday unless she can learn how to control them.
When Sonia’s powers start break down her will power, she ignores her mother’s rules and goes out on a date with Anthony. As she struggles not to use her power on Anthony, she receives bad news. Her mother is in trouble and by the time they get back to Sonia’s house, her mother has been kidnapped. To make matters worse, the kidnapper might be none other than Anthony’s mother.
Will Sonia confide enough in Anthony to help save her mother or are there other—more sinister—plans at work. Just how far is she willing to push herself to fit in and find acceptance in a crowd that might be dangerous to herself and the world? The story focuses on acceptance and isolation as emotional queues. It also has a view on self-restraint but does not preach absence as other Young Adult books might. This isn't to suggest Sonia has a lot of physical contact with boys, but she does act a lot more believable as a young woman than many of her fictional counterparts.
The reading was easy and fun—the story was imaginative and it flowed well. I like the style of Squires and I think she will be a great force in the world of Young Adult. The themes in the book were mature (good/evil; isolation; race mixing; fitting in; self-discovery) but they are presented in such a way that Young Adults can really connect to and maybe even understand a bit of their own lives better. I look forward to her next book in the series and this book makes me want to check out her other work such as Winter Solstice Winter and Summer Solstice Summer. I will even go as far to say that I look forward to the movies that should come out based upon her work.
So, in recap, the book is entertaining for Young Adults and Adults alike; the content is something that can imagination and literacy; and the coming of age aspect is relatable to both young and old alike.
I was lucky to come across this book and I will use it to teach literacy to the teens (and adults) I tutor. I do recommend this book for anyone who wants to buy it for the Young Adult in their life or even the Young Adult at heart. You will not be disappointed.
Sonia is given strict orders to never date or even think of kissing a boy. Sonia has special powers and if you come into contact with her saliva you will become her slave for life. Sonia’s mom has the same power but she won’t explain more, she keeps telling Sonia she will learn all about it when she turns 18. Sonia is going to graduate from high school and turn 18 in just two weeks. Most of Sonia’s friends are taking exotic trips for graduation but she’s going with her mom to Minnesota to learn about her special powers. Since her dad passed away in a car accident Sonia has tried not to cause her mom more heartache but she absolutely doesn’t want to take this boring trip.
Sonia’s emotions are out of control and her mom warns her that it’s because her flair is getting stronger. Her mom tells her that she is a Huldra and her special power to control people is called a flair. Sonia knows she is to never use her flair but when the school bully Savannah keeps bothering her, Sonia can’t help herself and she spits on her. She gets into trouble with the principle and he assigns her 10 hours of pulling weeds.
Sonia’s mom is troubled when Huldra’s keep disappearing but when her sister disappears, she is overly concerned. Sonia doesn’t know her aunts but doesn’t like seeing her Mom so upset.
When Sonia goes to the greenhouse after school to pull weeds she meets Anthony. He is gorgeous. He has intense light blue eyes and a great build. Sonia is surprised at how attracted she is to him. Anthony is rude one moment and then asking her out the next. Their teenager emotions are both out of control but it’s so much more than crushes pulling them together. Behind her mom’s back Sonia goes out with Anthony. He takes her to the ballet. Her favorite place because she use to be a dancer but since her Dad’s death she gave it up. When she gets a whole bunch of frantic messages from her mom she knows something is wrong. That is when Anthony comes clean and tells her who he really is. Sonia has to decide if she can trust him. Her mom has been kidnapped and the only person who can help her is Anthony. They call in reinforcements and the Lightalfars who live in Arizona agree to help them. They all meet together in New York and are planning to attack Wraithsong Island where the Darkalfars have taken Sonia’s mom. Nothing goes as planned. Sonia doesn’t know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. All she wants is to rescue her Mom and she will do whatever it takes to accomplish that.
I love this story! I am hooked. I can’t wait until the next book comes out. I even started rereading the book right after I finished it just to experience it all over again. It’s Norse Mythology but it’s happening today. I absolutely love stories that make you think, this could be someone I know and make our world even more mystical. I’ve always been interested in Norway but now I’m obsessed with the folklore. There is plenty of action in this book and a heart gripping romance. My favorite is how it ties in with the other series by E.J. Squires, A Viking Blood saga. This seriously has surpassed all other YA series and is by far my favorite. I mean it; I’m more captivated than I ever was with Twilight, Hunger Games, or City of Bones. And if you know me, you know how much I loved those series. This is a different kind of paranormal/fantasy story and I want to know more about these magical people and places.
I found this to be a highly intriguing and very captivating book. The author managed to snag my attention from the very beginning by throwing me as the reader straight into the story. Soon I start learning more about the deep dark truth of who and what Sonia is as she learns who and what she is as well. She always knew that she was special, but as she got older and closer to her 18th birthday, she started to understand a lot more about what made her so special. Immediately when Anthony entered the picture I was alarmed and skeptical of his intentions. As the story went on and Sonia and Anthony grew physically closer I started to truly believe he had ulterior motives – especially with the recent killings of young huldras. As I learn later on that I wasn’t wrong to assume that he had ulterior motives but as the story progressives things take an interesting turn. We learn the true nature of Anthony and more about his family as well as Sonia’s family. Anthony and Sonia must work together to fight the Almighty huldra and Olaf in order to save huldras and huldas. There’s romance, secrecy, mythology, and danger all wrapped up into one story. The story doesn’t end with that though, there’s so much more mystery, corruption, digging for information, and … tragedy in this story. Your heart will break in the end.
With Sonia’s flair she is able to control them for the rest of their lives which puts her young self in a very confusing position, especially as she nears closer to her 18th birthday where her powers will encompass her entire being and will then become much too difficult to manage without the proper training that can only be achieved through the Academy on the invisible island. There’s so much more though to her powers then this. With all power comes a sense of responsibility as well as there being those that will take advantage of that power.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is this one: “In life, the test comes first, the lesson later” as said by Sonia’s mother. This quote rains true throughout the entire story but it’s also applicable towards life outside of the novel as well.
One of my favorite things from this story is how huldras and huldas appropriate certain qualities from people with desirable qualities. I loved the scene that the author created when Sonia appropriated self-restraint and faith (not temperance) from the young apprentice priest. The author made it seem so beautiful and as the characters discussed, humbling.
I feel that this book is a great novel for those that love fantasy and romance genres and makes a great read for some mature young adults and adults. It’s a unique book about a young girl coming of age and having the doors of childhood close while the doors of adulthood open fast. It’s a really great book with a lovely plot and amazing writing that truly grabs the reader’s attention and heart. All that’s left to say is that I am really looking forward to reading the sequel!
I was given Wraithsong for free by the author for an honest review.
The plot of this novel was ok. I have not fully made up my mind of what I think of this book. There were some parts and characters that really called my attention. However, there were some instances in the plot where I was just not buying it. It felt like there was too much information thrown at the main character Sonia for her to be okay with it. I am all for a book where the main lead is a female and kicks butt, yet Sonia is very passive and whiny at first. For someone who has special gifts, she tends to follow others even though she voices strength and independence. I think the one instance I find her taking a lead to get something she wants, is to when she tries to seduce Anthony with her feminine wiles by wearing a mini skirt and heels(although I guess most teenagers would do that). There is also the love story aspect of the novel that causes some hesitation to this reader. I understand the whole mythology behind who they are as Huldra’s and Huldu’s seduction and being able to attract humans. Yet, as we learn later on, that is not the case between these two love birds. I feel like their interactions are not enough or descriptive of their feelings to constitute them being in love.
On the flip side, there are some very positive aspects to this novel as well. One of my favorite things about it is the Norse Mythology that is way more descriptive than the usual Thor and his mighty hammer and the descriptive landscape of Wraithsong Island. I will admit that the only word I recognized at first was Helheim but now I can recall a few more after reading the book. There are also a lot of plot twists that keeps the reader engaged to what’s to come. The beginning of the book is completely different to where you eventually end up. You go from a pretty normal teenage atmosphere to an invisible island where mythology is real and life is threatened. The code by which the Dynasty must live by is also very interesting and complex to understand within the characters. There is a whole world to be found when reading this book. A lot more interesting than history class I’ll tell you that.
I am interested in seeing where these characters will go from here and the growth Sonia will undergo with all the changes in her life. I am sure we have not seen the last of some of these characters as well as we learn from the fate of Olaf. Here’s to hoping that the relationship between Sonia and Anthony becomes more fluid as it does have potential. I will have to read the second installment to make my final opinion in this series.
I really enjoyed this book. The premise of it being based from Norse forklore is really interesting. Sonia is a strong lead, will be turning 18 and graduating high school. Her mother keeps telling her that her life will change significantly when she turns 18, but refuses to give her too much information other than she is a Huldra. What she does know is that she can influence people by her saliva. With a couple of weeks left of school and just before her birthday, she gets in trouble at school and is required to community service at the school, wherein she meets Anthony. He is the first boy she has ever been attracted to and she is confused by his hot and cold behavior with her. They develop a friendship and Sonia learns that Anthony is a Huldu, the male version of what she is coming to be. We learn that Sonia's mother and her sisters are also Huldras and they have been disappearing. We learn that Anthony's mother is a Huldra, but has a greedy and evil side to her. Sonia's mother is kidnapped and the story really takes off. Anthony tries to teach Sonia as much as he can to help her understand their world and wants to help her find her mother. The two of them develop a plan together, but will it work? You'll have to read it to find out. There is so much going on in this book. The Huldras and Huldus can see people's auras and are able to take some of their traits; there are good guys (who can alter time to change an outcoume), there are bad guys (who can shapeshift to resemble someone your know); there are hidden portals; there is an invisible island; there is someone who can visit Sonia in her dreams and can read her mind; the list goes on. There were times when, like Sonia, I didn't know who to believe. I was confused by Anthony at times, but have to believe it was because he was being influenced by his mother. I was confused by the condenscending attitude that one of the good guys had towards Sonia. This is a YA paranormal romance (clean) where there is a battle between good and evil. I'm not sure I'm totally happy with some things that happened at the end of this book. I now have to wait for the sequel in the hopes that some things are not what they seem. Overall, this is a great book. If you are looking for a different paranormal (no vamp's or were's), I believe you would really enjoy this book.
I have read E.J. Squires debut novel Winter Solstice Winter before, and I immensely enjoyed it. When I learned about her new book, I had to make sure that I get a copy of this. Once again, I fell in love with her new book, Wraithsong - Desirable Creatures.
This story is about Sonia who has the power to control people with the use of her Huldra flair. With just a spit, or wet kiss, or anything that involves the saliva, she can easily control people, compel them to do her bidding and succumb to her wishes. Her mom, Hedda forbids her to do such thing before she reaches 18, but when she meets Anthony, her desire for the guy intensifies, she almost becomes out of control. She tests herself by leaving him a kiss on the cheek. But the problem was, Anthony seems to deflect her flair. Was there something wrong with her?
Soon, Sonia and Anthony find themselves entangled in a world of deceit, betrayal, fantasy and reality. They come to know about themselves, about being Darkálfars and Lightálfars. Their love is tested and judged. In the end, Sonia is torn in a decision and she isn't even sure she will be able to fulfill her destiny.
Wraithsong is an exciting Norse/Viking paranormal romance set in the modern times. The story nicely captures the overwhelming mythology of Huldras from Norway. This is actually my first time to read a story about Huldras. I admit, I am not an expert in Norse myths and legends, but I really found them interesting and highly engaging. Thanks to author EJ Squires, I was able to learn more about these desirable creatures. Every scene/chapter moves the story forward, unlike the others I have read which suddenly takes you back in time without premise. Wraithsong seamlessly blends romance and fantasy plus mythology with decadence and taste, I practically devoured it.
E.J. Squires has again impressed me with her knowledge with Norse mythology. I have given a 5 star rating to Winter Solstice Winter a year ago. Now, she seems to be on a roll. Here's another 5 star rating for a well-crafted and very original story that captured my heart.
“In life, the test comes first, the lesson later.”
Sonia, a young teenager, soon to be 18 years old, is different from all other teenagers her age. She has the ability to control people. Sonia has to follow very strict rules, something she doesn’t really understand as her mother is always so extremely vague about it. Soon she meets Anthony, the only boy she actually has any interest in. Things haven’t been easy for poor Sonia. She has to overcome a few twist and turns in her life. Starting by knowing who she really is, saving her mother from Maureen that was taken to Wraithsong Island, fighting for her fifth Huldra gift and embracing true love all at once isn’t an easy task for Sonia.
The story is rich in Norse Mythology. I have to be honest, up until now I didn’t know much about it and wasn’t really drawn to it. However, I must say I am more than thankful I came across Wraithsong. Such a wonderful paranormal romance story. Other than wanting to know more about Norse Mythology, I fell completely in love with the plot. Every time I thought I knew what was about to happen the author just gave it an unexpected twist. The characters are dynamic and very well written. And while I was reading, it felt as if I was a part of everything, the book is full of great descriptive detail. I don’t just like to read a story, I like to be in it. It was good to read something other than vampires and werewolf drama.
Wraithsong is the first book of the Desirable Creatures series and was the first book I read from E.J. Squires. I am definitely not going to stop here; I’ll be waiting for Sonia’s happy ending.
Wraithsong: Desirable Creatures Series – Book I is the first of a series of Norse Mythology stories that incorporate romance with magical and other Viking-like beliefs and practices. This novel is authored by E. J. Squires and is about the life of seventeen-year-old girl named Sonia. Her feeling of being unique from other teenagers enrolled in Sarasota High was confirmed when she discovered that she could control another person’s mind. However, as she turns 18, her control of this power is becoming more difficult to accomplish. This predicament coupled with the emerging of some enemies and a mysterious guy named Anthony, who was her senior. His inattention to her is so in contrast with how other guys at the school treat her, thus making her more curious and annoyed at the same time. However, the sudden death of three cousins who live outside of the state where she lives as well as the unexplained disappearance of her mother leaves much doubt for Sonia whether she can or cannot trust the people around her. Will she be able to develop her budding and newly discovered powers to help save her mother and other people who would need her help?
This novel reveals the story of how a teenager who unexpectedly experiences a supernatural ability which she later learns that she inherited from her mother, shows quiet strength and bravery in rescuing her captured mother.
Personally, being a fan of Norse mythology, I find this novel very interesting. I look forward to the next book of this Desirable Creatures Series. It was a great buy and an excellent addition to my kindle library!
I really wanted this book to be good, I was really excited to read it as I had heard great things about it! I liked that it talked about Norwegian/ Scandinavian mythology, different and quite interesting. However, and I am sorry to say this, even though the story idea was really good, as I was reading, I realised that something felt off but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until a couple chapters in. I don't know how to quite explain it but here it is: -The conversations. The dialogues were dull and superficial and made me just want to skip the whole thing. You don't need to make a conversation of everything everyone says!!! (I wouldn't mind if the "okay"s and "sure"s and "fine"s were skipped) They were at times so childish... -The characters I couldn't connect with, I couldn't feel anything for them... They were not well developed at all! It's like they only have feelings for like 2 seconds and then forget them right after. They keep stating the obvious which made me super annoyed. I didn't like Sonia at all. -The explanations were uninteresting, but that kind of goes with point 1 and 2. I don't know if this is only me or if others feel this way too... I wouldn't actually want to read book 2, but I am willing to give it a go to see if anything has changed...
Sonia lived a relatively simple life, at least on the outside. Only a chosen few know who she really is. She has a secret ability that can change the lives of all those who cross her path. She has received this very powerful gift from her mother and with a simple kiss she can alter someone’s existence forever.
But as she finished her senior year in high school she is dreading the year ahead. She is being forced to learn about her gifts and abilities in a remote town in Minnesota. She will spend the next year learning about the unique community she comes from, and learning to use her gifts or her flair in the proper way.
Those plans however will be interrupted when she meets Anthony, and falls for him instantly. He shares her gifts and his mother a supreme ruler wants to steal Sonia gifts to use as her own.
The author did a great job in making this supernatural themed book relatable. You will find yourself rooting for Sonia and Anthony’s love, even if you don’t always know which side he’s on. the book is filled with lively character’s, dark themes, war , but most of all love.
This book tells the story of Sonia, who as she approaches her eighteenth birthday comes to realise that her existence is not as simple and straight forward as she may have thought or that of a normal teenage girl graduating from high school. As one of a few rare remaining Huldras in existence Sonia is thrown into a dramatic adventure of self discovery as she comes to terms with her new abilities and desires that comes with being a Huldra. Her life is turned upside down when she meets the mysterious and alluring Anthony. The connection and attraction between them is evident from the start however Sonia doubts whether he is someone she can trust and whether she can even trust her own feelings and emotions. Either way, these are feelings she must put aside in order to focus on the urgent mission to save her mother from the clutches of the evil Maureen and Olaf in order to preserve the Huldra race. This is a really captivating and thrilling story full of dramatic twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. A real page turner that I genuinely could not put down, it is extremely well written and creative. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
Wraithsong is a compelling novel that had me flipping through the pages, anxious to learn how it would all end. Sonia is a 17, almost 18 year-old who is anything but normal. She has the ability to control others, among other things, and though her mom knows why, she is not willing to give Sonia any information. When Sonia is sentenced to school service because she spits in one of her bullying classmates' faces, she meets Anthony, a mysterious and moody senior who recently transferred to her high school. Sonia can't resist his blue eyes and blond hair and can't get herself to think about anything else. However, he starts acting really strange toward her, a gentleman one minute, a jerk the next, and though she tries really hard, Sonia discovers that she can't make him do what she wants. When Sonia's mom vanishes without a trace, Anthony offers to help her get her mom back. But Sonia doesn't know whether or not she can trust Anthony, especially when she finds out that he has many secrets. A highly suspenseful and romantic novel! A must read!
E.J. Squires' "Wraithsong" is a refreshingly original tale of romance, adventure, and folklore. I picked up this novel based on the positive reviews it received; and let me tell you, this gem deserves more than five stars! From the moment I started reading it, I was entranced; I needed to see what was going to happen next. The story is filled with so many brilliant and unexpected turns that are so deliciously unpredictable, that I found myself gasping in excitement for most of the read. Without giving away too much, I found myself in love with the folklore used in this book. The different mythological species introduced in "Wraithsong" really had me hungry to keep reading; and I just couldn't wait to see how Sonia's abilities would develop, as well as her relationship with Anthony.
I recommend this book to all paranormal romance lovers, and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!
E.J. Squires spins a tale of greed, power and all things beautiful in this tale full of Norse Mythology.
Sonia is a few days from graduating high school and turning 18 when her life begins to spin out of control. She learns that she is a Huldra, a very powerful mythological being who can appropriate virtues from humans, and is part of the Huldra Dynasty. Her mother tells her she must go to Wraithsong Island and train to learn her abilities and accept her fifth Huldra gift. In the meantime, Sonia meets and falls for Anthony – a man with his own secrets.
While trying to discover if Anthony is someone she can trust, Sonia must find her kidnapped mother, protect her gift and escape from those who want to put an end to the existence of the Huldra and do not have Sonia’s best interest at heart.
Wraithsong is a beautifully written and powerfully addictive book and is the first book in the Desirable Creatures Series. I can hardly wait to see how this series plays out.
This is certainly a change from most YA/Fantasy/Mythology romances I have read recently. I actually bit my nails in anticipation while turning the pages.
Although the story started a bit slow, Sonia being the subject of bullying at school (while controlling her temper) and having a no-kissing rule to follow, the action becomes tensed and intense when she meets Anthony, her mysterious weeding partner. Yup, it's weeding, as in tending the school garden by removing grasses or weeds around the plants. This is Sonia's punishment after she spits on her bully's face. Oh what a feisty one, she really is.
But things have gotten different when she discovers about her hidden gift and the truth about herself.
I highly recommend Wraithsong to all YA readers who love some Norse myths injected to the story. I assure you all, you won't be able to put it down.
Anyone who is a fan of coming of age stories, Norse mythology, magic, romance and suspense will get a kick out of this book. Like most debut books of a series, this book took me a few chapters to really get into it, however afterwards I couldn't put it down! The characters are all easy to relate to, especially Sonia who is a wonderful heroine. Not hokey and overdone. She has her faults, which is what I like. The story itself is different, which also drew me in, especially since I didn't know much about Norse mythology and once I started reading the book, I found myself looking up the information I read so it actually teaches and engages you as you read it. It also teaches life lessons as well but I don't want to give too much away. I'm just going to recommend it to everyone here. Seriously, go get this book.
If you want to get sucked into a world of mythology, magic, romance and suspense… this is a must read. The suspense is incredible, just when you think you know what is happening, you don’t. Surprise after surprise to the point that I Googled Huldra to see if it really existed in Norse mythology or not, but it does. This author really did her homework and is skilled in carving out such a beautiful romantic coming of age story. This novel contains everything romance, action, suspense, mystery, magic and mythology. However, the only part I did not like was when I almost cried with Sonia and I’m looking forward to the next installment to see what will happen to our heroine. Definitely a must read.
I finished this book in just a few hours. It drew me in and I couldn't stop reading. The story tells of a young girl named Sonia who is two weeks from turning eighteen. On her eighteenth birthday she will learn about who she truly is. She is a Huldra, a beautiful being with powers that allow her to gain control of others. Before her eighteenth birthday she meets a boy named Anthony who she will later learn is just like her. Sonia falls in love with Anthony but they face major obstacles because Anthony's mother is out to gain Sonia's powers for herself. The two will battle to protect Sonia and her gift. They will meet new friends along the way and questions their loyalties to one another. This book keeps you guessing. I can't wait to read part 2.
The book took me a few chapters to get into, but once the ball got rolling I was hooked. Sonia is a very likeable character with a genuine spirit. Equally, Anthony is a strong character with complexities the reader can't quite figure out from the get-go. Wraithsong's strongest quality is its twists and turns, evoking emotions and questions from the reader with each page. The book was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure once it gets going. I'd highly recommend the book to anyone that likes a bit of romance mixed in their fantasy books. It also doesn't hurt if you have a thing for Norse mythology.
Wraithsong: Desirable Creatures Series by E. J. Squires is a contemporary paranormal young adult romance that is a great book for both teens and adults. Sonia and Anthony were both well written and very believable; I loved how Sonia had to struggle to find out who she is and what she can do, nothing was handed to her on some magical silver plate. The first few chapters are a little slow, but if you stick with the book you will not be disappointed. I really hope Squires continues the series. I would fully recommend this book to any young adult or adult who loves fantasy, romance, adventure ,and the paranormal.
This was a very good book, excellent actually. The characters are not only well written but well defined. The back story that comes to light is interesting and engaging. This is not my usual type of story to read but I enjoyed it greatly and can say that I will be looking for the release of the next book. I was interested in how the story was going to progress and while most writers will turn it into a "sappy" love story in the ending in to this book was a nice change from the norm. I highly suggest this book if you want a good read without the over the top boy meets girl and they are different vibe to them.
I was instantly drawn in to the story and captivated by the main character Sonia. The story follows a girl named Sonia who has always known she was different but during the last few weeks of her senior year at school she learns just how different she really is. She learns she is a Huldra, a being that has many special powers. She begins to fall in love with a boy but quickly realizes that he has some powerful secrets of his own. It's a great paranormal romance story that's mixed with Norse history. Another great book by E.J Squires!! I know this is supposed to be a YA book but I'm 36 and I absolutely loved this book.
One thing that I particularly loved about this book was the originality of the paranormal beings in this story. I have read a lot of books in this genre and have not came across anything like the Huldras, and I found the background of the mythology fascinating. Sonia, bless her, is such an amazing character. I'm looking forward to seeing her develop and mature more in the next book and I think my heart broke a little bit for her at the end. I think I know where the story may go next but with how many plot twists there were in this story I have no idea what to expect but I know I will be eagerly waiting to read it... *i was given this book in exchange for an honest review*
