Ryan Boone is fresh back from suspension from his job as an emergency room doctor for running off his smart mouth. This time he is determined not to mess up. His niece is relying on him, and he knows one wrong move could lose him his job, and his chance to get custody of her from her neglectful parents.

Having moved in with his brother to look out for his niece, soon he is sucked into a world of abuse that seems more and more difficult to escape from. His attitude at work has earned him little in the way of friends to turn to, and he can't leave his niece to face it alone. Will he be brave enough to find a way out? If so how much of the original him will be left standing?

Well, this book fulfilled all my hurt/comfort needs, and really, I need more books like this. Not for the hurt, obviously, but the hurt builds up the comfort. I love those books where things are horrible for the character (s) at first, but then it always, always gets better. Things start looking up. Because that is something like my life right now, and these books show me it'll all get better, one day.
