Rate this book
THE FINAL BATTLE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN
Eolande, the prophesied child of the last true Water Keeper, has endured a decade of brutal captivity in Veruca, held prisoner by a callous queen who exploits her divine blood for wealth. When a shocking betrayal is orchestrated by the queen’s own general, the resulting chaos allows Eolande to escape her captors, thrusting her into an unfamiliar world with no one to trust. Hunted by the rulers of the four realms who seek to use her power for their own purposes, Eolande, the legendary Solvrei, is believed to hold the key to saving the world her aunt, Maialen, is destroying. The once benevolent Keeper of Earth now possesses two of the Elemental amulets, upsetting the delicate balance that exists between the Keepers. Maialen is desperate to hold on to her corrupt power, even if it means sacrificing her niece and everything she once held dear.

An unlikely band of island warriors has pledged their existence to stopping the Earth Keeper and ridding the world of the amulets once and for all, but they cannot do it alone. They need the power of the Solvrei. Eolande must decide who she will fight for, and if the world she barely knows is even worth saving.

The final book in The Keepers of Imbria series, Eolande is an enthralling epic that takes readers on a non-stop journey of adventure, heartbreak, war, greed, family and love.

J. Barrett is the award-winning author of the epic fantasy series “The Keepers of Imbria.” She is known for her dynamic characters and immersive world building, and she breathes life into strong female heroines and villains that you will love to hate.

Growing up, Barrett was a shy, intelligent child who spent much of her time in her room reading. The worlds she escaped to through her books helped her make it through a difficult childhood. She began writing her own stories as a way to shed the timid child who suffered, and to become the strong, independent woman she is today. Her first novel, “Orabelle,” is the beginning of the epic tale that unfolds throughout The Keepers of Imbria series.

Barrett wrote the next three novels of her fascinating and gripping series after being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Being young, healthy, and active, J. was completely caught off guard by the diagnosis. An avid rock climber and mountaineer, she has a passion for the outdoors and spends as much time off the beaten path as possible, with adventures that have taken her across oceans and to the tops of the highest peaks. With her illness, she was suddenly unable to do the things she loved most. Overwhelmed and struggling to express how she was feeling, Barrett once again turned to writing. Instead of focusing on her anxiety and illness, she could get lost in the world of Imbria, forgetting about medications and surgeries and doctors for a few beautiful moments. Her strength and determination shine through in her relatable characters, many of whom are women who have overcome all odds to survive and whose perseverance, bravery and determination changed a world.

Today, Barrett is doing great and feeling stronger than ever. She resides in Texas with fiancé and her three-legged dog, Artemis, as her faithful companion and is currently planning her next mountain she will climb.

In Barrett’s ambitious fantasy series, the divergence of a Keeper from tradition sets loose an ancient evil, forcing the Keepers to rally together amidst internal conflicts that threaten to tear them apart.

The saga unfolds across four installments, each following a different Keeper of Imbria as they grapple with internal conflicts and external threats. In “Orabelle,” Queen Orabelle’s pursuit of truth amidst betrayal lays the groundwork for uncovering secrets and a chilling prophecy. “Maialen” delves into the aftermath of war, as Keeper of Earth Maialen must navigate betrayals and prophecies to safeguard Imbria. “Blaise” follows the journey of the skeptical Keeper of Fire, thrust into a realm of prophecy and betrayal, as he challenges his beliefs to secure their future. Lastly, “Eolande” portrays the prophesied Solvrei breaking free from captivity to confront a corrupted Keeper of Earth, faced with a choice that could seal Imbria’s fate.

Barrett masterfully intertwines various fantasy tropes to construct a compelling narrative. Through prophecies, magical elements, and political intrigue, readers are immersed in a world enriched with timeless themes of destiny and morality. Each story follows the structure of an epic quest, exploring morality, friendship, and personal growth. Through intricate magic systems and political intrigue, Barrett’s narratives subvert traditional tropes, offering fresh perspectives on timeless themes.

Throughout the series, common themes of strong heroines, intricate plotlines, and elements of political intrigue and family dynamics emerge. Barrett’s characters are a standout feature, with each protagonist displaying resilience, growth, and complexity that resonates deeply with readers.

Orabelle undergoes a significant evolution throughout the story, transforming from a conflicted and uncertain individual into a resilient and determined leader. Maialen emerges as a deeply layered character grappling with inner conflict and maternal love. Initially consumed by bitterness towards her sister and strained relations with her son, Maialen undergoes a transformation throughout the narrative, showcasing growth and redemption.

Similarly, Eolande begins her journey grappling with uncertainty and fear but undergoes a profound transformation, finding courage and self-discovery through her interactions with other characters. Her journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment is a central theme, culminating in her emergence as a confident and empowered protagonist.

The conflicts in the series arise not only from external threats but also from internal struggles, such as Maialen’s guilt and Blaise’s sacrifices, adding depth to their dynamic and showcasing the challenges they face. The pacing remains smooth, and the various sub plots interlace beautifully.

With its high action, well-crafted characters, riveting plot twists, and thematic depth, the series makes for an enthralling read for fans of epic fantasy. Readers hungry for stories of adventure, betrayal, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit won’t want to miss this one.

The Keepers of Imbria erupts with J. Barrett’s fourth novel in this epic fantasy series, “Eolande.” What began with the head-spinning tale of “Orabelle” in book one has come full circle as Orabelle’s daughter must choose her position in a world spiraling helplessly out of control. Imbria has long been ruled by four Keepers who each controlled one element to maintain balance. Orabelle was the last true Water Keeper, her elemental stone having been stolen by her sister Maialen, Keeper of Earth. What Maialen has set in motion is destroying their world.

As we passed through the winding garden path, I noticed the twisted and distorted weeds that were spreading over the ground the brittle flowers whose blackened petals crumbled in the breeze. The earth itself was a dull shade of grey, as if the soil had been leached of everything in it that brought forth life. It was like a strange parody of death, a play of decaying plants that symbolized the Keeper’s foul reign. Pg 274

Barrett’s beautifully descriptive prose thrusts us back into this world of Elemental Keepers, rulers seeking to gain more power, and a land trying to survive their wrath. The deeply engaging wordsmithing immerses readers so completely into this majestic realm that we are loathe to leave it, even to complete real-world tasks like eating, sleeping, and working. This is not a two-dimensional tale told around a campfire. “Eolande” and The Keepers of Imbria series as a whole are rich in fascinating characters, deep with symbolism, and immersed in an overwhelming storyline that spans the range of human emotion. Epic fantasy simply doesn’t get any better than this.

The sky overhead had darkened, bloated clouds of ash cloaking the last hours of sunlight from the horizon. Darkness crept at the edges of the battle like a looming monster waiting to pounce. Pg 309

The characters are more than engaging; they burrow into your soul. You find yourself wanting to help Eolande as she struggles with the concept that she is the Solvrei, the one who can save the world. Characters you may have feared or despised in previous portions of the series will be seen in a new light as long-hidden truths are revealed; as battle lines are drawn. As hearts are exposed.

There is so much to applaud with this novel, this series. I loved the streaming consciousness Eolande was subject to in times of terror or even indecision. Her life had never been normal, and it shows well in the dire inner monologue that taunts her. I loved the band of warriors that put everything on the line for the sake of their kingdoms and their world. They chose a harsh and unrelenting existence to find and protect the Solvrei (Eolande) so that the lands of Imbria could survive the brutal power plays of a few. I was fascinated and perplexed by the Venris, and rightfully so. It was appropriate that this character was difficult to grasp and hard to trust.

Fans of sword and sorcery fantasy, Arthurian adventures, and epic quests will know what to expect here. As this is the fourth book in the series, there are a vast number of characters, many intertwined through familial blood or past histories. While it’s possible due to the prowess of the author, I would not recommend jumping into “Eolande” if you have not yet read the previous books. Best enjoyment will come from understanding the history of the characters and their land that has been laid out in previous books. But whether you choose to start at the beginning, as the vast number of fans will rightfully choose (since fantasy fans generally prefer to know everything we can), or if you choose to start right here, this is an epic that should not be missed.

I highly recommend “Eolande” and the entire Keepers of Imbria series to those who embrace full-bodied, intelligent, in-depth fantasy epics. Fans of Leigh Bardugo, Brandon Sanderson, Rebecca Yarros, George R.R. Martin, and Sarah J. Maas- meet J. Barrett, your new favorite author.

Eolande: The Keepers of Imbria (Book 4) is a breathtaking, emotionally charged finale to one of the most imaginative fantasy series in recent years. J. Barrett delivers a story that’s both sweeping in scope and intimate in feeling a tale of elemental power, moral reckoning, and the fragile beauty of hope amid destruction.

After a decade of brutal captivity, Eolande the last true Water Keeper emerges into a world that has all but forgotten balance. Her escape from the tyranny of Queen Veruca sets in motion a chain of events that pits gods, rulers, and mortals against one another in a desperate struggle for the fate of Imbria. Barrett’s world-building shines here the four realms pulse with history and myth, each page steeped in the sensory richness of storms, soil, fire, and breath.

But beyond the fantasy grandeur lies something deeper: a story about autonomy, legacy, and forgiveness. Eolande’s journey is not just one of rebellion, but of reclamation of her voice, her purpose, and her power to heal what has been broken by greed and grief. The relationships she forges with warriors, enemies, and her own past are tender and turbulent, grounding the book’s epic battles in profound humanity.

Barrett’s prose is cinematic yet lyrical, her pacing masterful. The final act grips with tension, heartbreak, and unexpected grace, delivering a conclusion that satisfies both emotionally and thematically. Eolande doesn’t just close the Keepers of Imbria saga it cements it as a modern fantasy classic that will resonate long after the last page.

The final book in this beautiful traumatic series was, not a disappointment. The story flows effortlessly from the first book to the last page of the final installment. Never once did I feel the plot was getting lost or the characters were bland. What a roller-coaster of emotions while reading, gloriously traumatizing! I look forward to reading this series again!

The stories are beautiful, traumatizing, and completely relatable. The characters are all strong and multifaceted. The depth is astounding, the emotional hijacking is deep and the ride is complex and exhilarating.

I highly recommend these books!

Awestruck

The series has ended. I don't cry. But that tore my heart out. I loved how she ended it. I didn't know how it would go. J Barrett's words will sit with me ringing in my mind for quite some time...I am humbled by her writing ability. Her words weaving a world of love, deception, treachery, momentarily happiness, pain, heartache.... I could go on and on. This is the most beautiful series I have ever read and I truly mean that. I've read amazing books but this touched my heart in a way I didn't know a book could. I'm quite awestruck at the moment.

Wonderful conclusion to the Orabelle series!

In less than a month's time, I have now read all 4 books of the Orabelle series and yet, I crave more! An endearing series about friendship, betrayal, love and characters doing what they believe is best even if it leads to dire consequences. Amazing world building as well! Can't wait for the next book/series this author writes next!
