I'm back. Back to my bullshit. Aka reading books about violent abusers with zero scruples who get the girl and enjoying the fuck outta them.

“Are those tears of joy to see your king?”

Skskskskksksksks I absolutely loved Cyrus, okay? 😭 Mass murdereres, rapists and tyrants aren't supposed to be that condescendingly funny and irresistible but the world is unfair. What's new.

There's just something so irresistible about a man that is the sole source of their girl's distress and has a cute little habit of making fun of her abject misery at his hands.

The evil that is fully aware of itself, the evil that embraces itself, the evil that doesn't make apologies >>>>>>>> 🥰

This book just about happened to tick all the boxes of my unsophisticated self.

🛐 power imbalance reaching its peak
🛐 non-con fest.

🛐 reluctantly obsessed tyrant slowly falling for his beautiful human slave and trynna resist the temptation of stooping down to her sjsjsjsk

🛐 his beautiful human slave giving zero fucks about his feelings and waiting for an opportunity to escape

I love the idea of a man obsessed with a woman who couldn't be bothered with his sick feelings. It makes all the sense in the world to be terrified when a psychopath takes an interest in you, but more so it's such a thrilling thing to read about.

Not many romance authors understand the allure of writing a dark romance this way but those who get it are 🔝.

I specifically appreciated how much Cyrus resisted the urge to surrender to his forbidden obsession and had been hovering over Anna like a dark cloud that's about to unleash storm and destruction over a peaceful village by a seaside until he could take it no longer and gave in to the temptation.

He's the King and lowering himself to the likes of a slave, not just any slave, but a representative of the 'inferior' race that he hates and despises contradicts his very nature and ingrained beliefs, which makes for such a good tension-filled dynamics. The fact that not only is the girl far from feeling remotely honoured by his attentions, she's absolutely terrified and inconvenienced by them and would want nothing more but get rid of the advances is such a blow to his ego. Snobs that get humbled but are also too haughty and intimidating to make it stop them are such a lovely sight to behold. <3

Inner conflicts that stem from a feeling of one's superiority and disdain for a group of people are fun to watch.

I also love it when authors don't take the easiest root of giving a reader instant gratification and choose to create unresolved sexual tension, slowly taking you to the apogee and creating the sense of anticipation. It gives a reader something to look forward to and the payoff turns out so much more satisfying.

The writing style in this book is very simple, if not somewhat primitive and stilted at times, but these days I'd take simple writing over authors that are trying too hard to impress me with their grandiloquence instead of actually narrating a captivating story to me. I was hooked throughout the whole story so I didn't have much time to dwell on such small inconveniences as simple sentence structure.

I can't help thinking that this book could have easily entered my top favorite books if the characters had more depth and the writing — more finesse. Most actions and motivations of the characters lack the multilayered nuance and psychological depth to them that I expect of an objectively quality read. The side characters aren't even remotely fleshed out but I don't have the gall to complain about it in earnest when I know for a fact I had the time of my life watching Cyrus go insane over Anna and couldn't care less about any other irrelevant bitch. Their unhealthy interactions taking up to 90% of the page time is what I call an ecologically-friendly usage of time, space and ink. <3 Who would even care about side characters and the world building in the face of their chemistry? Certainly not me.

I experience the deepest gratitude each time I stumble upon authors who don't try to have their cake and eat it too by choosing to advocate for women's right, feminist empowerment, human values and other irrelevant bullshit in their nominally dark romance novels.

While this book is certainly not the darkest romance book I've ever laid my eyes on, I think it's one of the most authentic ones. It's not bending over backwards to appear politically correct and morally acceptable. It doesn't feature apologetic men and forgiving women. It doesn't choose to stay within the confines of socially acceptable and likeable since it depicts a cruel racist and merciless fantasy world torn by war, death, slavery and destruction.

The hero runs true to his form till the very end. His love for Anna possessed a fever-like quality. He encounters zero moral dilemma when he takes what he wants without asking for permission because he views her as nothing but his property, a prized possession of sorts that's boldly snaking its way into his thoughts and feelings.

Anna is an extremely likeable female character that plays her cards smart. I love, love, love dark romance heroines that aren't obnoxious (most call that obnoxious archetype "badass") and use soft power instead because well... plot armor aside and realistically speaking, how else do you survive at the hands of a mass murderer, tyrant and your personal torturer? Anna's strength is not shoved in the face — it's sort of strategic.

Feb. 16, 2023:
This was AMAZING!!! But book 2 comes out in 2024? 😳 I can’t wait. Similar vibes to Quinn Blackbird’s Black World Series, Dark Fae and Fae’s Captive for the dynamic of powerful hero and human heroine who is first treated as a house slave before moving up the ranks in power, and Scarlett St. Clair’s Adrian x Isolde for the depiction of humans versus vampires war.

Always referred to as beasts and they feel more vampire to me.

Ahhh this was amazing. Sensual. Obsessive, possessive, and cruel hero.

Tarantino levels of violence, sexual and otherwise.

You can just really tell the author had the time of her life writing the hero.

He's rabid and needs to be put down asap lol

Update: I read book 2 and it was as addictive. The "hero" is also still the worst.

Comes with high praise from Vellini.

I subscribed to the author's patreon, which includes the first draft of this book (I may actually have to buy the kindle edition anyway to get the edited experience).

It's a dark fantasy creature romance so it's everything I ever wanted, basically.

Shoutout to Vellini for rec me this gem

“Are those tears of joy to see your king?”

Ahhh haha who doesn’t love this asshole?!!!

I hugely appreciated the way Anna refuse to succumb to Stockholm syndrome, more prevalent than not, and I support her whatever journey she may choose going forward.

The beauty of this book is in the ability to make me feel for both of them equally. This is one of those times that makes me buy a hard copy even after reading it, purely because I enjoy being one with the character and would like to come back to it in future👏

Yes I was desperate.

Yes I started an unfinished series, like a dumb-dumb.

Yes I’m effing traumatized.

Yes I’ve downloaded the next one.

Yes I’m having an existential crisis on whether or not I should actually read it before book 3 drops.

Yes I’m a mess.

Yes I really do know better

Very simple, childlike writing.

The book is filled with typos and grammatical errors. The writing is super basic, there's little to no descriptions of anything. It almost feels like it was written by AI.

Decent dark fantasy

Decent dark fantasy story. Could have been edited better, some of the dialogue comes off a bit wonky. I’m a bit surprised on this since the author previously released this on Wattpad and their Patreon, I thought they would edit it more before releasing it on Amazon. I wish the world building would have been more solid too. One thing I liked though is that Anna doesn’t give into the King after he routinely abuses her. She keeps her sense of self intact even after all the trauma she experiences.

Well.
That was some crazy, OTT, toxic, and terrifying shit.
And the only thing going through my head right now is...

And it has some things that I don't even conventionally like. Our psychopathic, beast (literally) of a hero is with A LOT of other women other than the heroine. Makes her watch and I'm pretty sure he was even with one in the "Epilogue" of the book...which btw, I'm not sure an epilogue is necessary or even appropriate for the first book of a SERIES. I would think that it should be utilized in the last installment, otherwise it's JUST ANOTHER CHAPTER.

I don't want to say too much because I plan on rolling right into the second book, which I went ahead and purchased around the 30% reading mark for this one, and it probably would be best for me to go into a more in depth review at the completion of the series…

So there were moment's that our hero was crass...

“Strange you’ve never had a cock in that virgin pussy, yet you drawl on about the passions of sex.”

OTT, jealous and possessive...

He chuckles, stepping around me to address Dimitri. “If you ever so much as look in her direction again, I will execute you. I do not care that you’ve found favor with Felix’s cock.”

And insane...

I hate humans. All of them. Even her. Even at this very moment, I don’t know why I’ve tolerated her to this point. I don’t know why I enjoy her presence. I don’t know why I want her near me. I just know that I do. And yet, the sight of her sickens me to my core. Each time I look into her eyes, the temptation to kill her claws at my flesh like a plague. I feel nothing for her, yet everything.

But somehow I was still drawn to him.

One thing is clear, though, this isn't really a romance...so far anyway. That Stockholm hasn't quite set in yet for our heroine (which I also liked, but she didn't stand out as much as the Hero-- he stole the whole frickin' crazy train show). So maybe it might turn into a dark romance as the series progresses, but it's currently just circling around our Hero's unnatural and unprecedented obsession with the heroine. And before someone comes at me and says that the Hero can't be obsessed and still have sex with other women. Yes, yes he can. Men are strange creatures. And typically (not always) women apply more emotions to having sex than men do. So it doesn't necessarily mean jack doodily shit to a dude when he has sex with a woman and especially in this Hero's case since he's in such denial of his quickly developing feelings for the heroine anyway. Ok?

This will not be a good read for everyone. I think you have to be a certain type of person to enjoy this one, and, quite frankly, I don't know what that type of person is, but I just know I’m one of them! Check your trigger warnings if you're interested and now I'm off to start book TWO!

Solid 3.5 stars.

The writing for this story was so addictive and it was really easy to get through. Definitely one of those dark romances where you can kind of just turn your brain off. I'll definitely be reading the sequel when it comes out in February.

However, I must admit, while usually I'm rooting for the toxic messed up ending in these type of stories, I really enjoyed Annalise getting free from Cyrus and sending him to his death. I love her so much. If a man broke my arm while I was pregnant, I wouldn't care if he lived or died either.

It was great seeing Cyrus' POV where he remarks to himself that he's sure he's broken her and that she's loyal to him, and in her head she's like, "I feel nothing for you, you deranged psychopath. Literally go die."

For that reason, I kind of view this story as more of an erotic thriller. I hope the sequel becomes more of a dark romance where the evil mcc is actually protective of the heroine and cares about her well being and she develops some unhealthy feelings for him. I want Cyrus to stay evil, but right now he sucks SO badly. He has almost no redeeming qualities. Every time he's on the page he's going batshit crazy. Must be hard living with zero emotional intelligence and the anger regulation skills of a toddler.

I really did enjoy the society of the beasts that Eris Belmont created (even though I grew weary of them being called beasts every single page. Like why) and the power dynamics of their kingdom. The way all the beasts worshipped Cyrus felt very dark and culty. I also loved the way the humans were portrayed in this world. Annalise slowly realizing that power corrupts everywhere and she's got to do what's best for her ultimately and leave Dmitri behind was so great. (also, poor Dmitri. I felt so bad for this guy throughout the whole book. He just stumbles into one bad situation after another. Would love reading about his relationship with the general though)

Some things were a bit irritating about this story (like how many times it says Cyrus "chuckled" evilly like okay we get it he likes to chuckle thanks for telling me yet again that he did that) but I did love Cyrus' crazy obsession with Annalise.

He takes one look at her at the beginning of the novel and suddenly he's crying screaming throwing up every time she's within ten feet of him. Always lordly commanding his servants to leave the room so he can grill her on her riveting life as a small town farm girl lmao

I'm looking forward to his character development in War of the King. Kind of worried about them potentially having a child though. I've read other reviews that say in the second book they do end up having a baby and that sounds like a train wreck. Can't wait to read it, honestly.

Genuinely the best book I’ve ever read.

I never got into the romantasy genre because they never have enough smut, triggers like noncon between main characters, or imagery. Eris has created the perfect fantasy world. It’s dark, abusive, obsessive and beautiful. It’s like I’m living in the renaissance as I read. The movie that plays out in my mind is unbelievable. Our H, Cyrus is described exactly how Henry Cavill in the Witcher looks😮‍💨🥵 Our h has long wavy black hair and bright amber eyes. Ugh it’s truly a perfect pair. This ends on a cliffhanger and I believe it’s set to be a 3 part series? All I know is if these two don’t end up together I will lose my mind. I need everyone who has no triggers and enjoys MEANNN MMC’s to read this right now.

Well 🤡 I wasn't expecting this.

How I feel after telling myself to finish the book and not DNF it in hopes that it gets better:

I don't know if it's because I recently reread one of my favourite fantasy series- but this book just didn't do it for me.

Everything about this book felt so obvious 😭 I liked the concept, but there was absolutely no buildup to anything and it was in no way a cohesive story. I really thought it would get better towards the end.

The writing in particular was just so simple in a way that made it hard to appreciate anything going on. Literally nothing about this was developed.

I couldn't get behind this 🤷‍♀️: guys the writing 😭💀☝️.

Anyway I'm going to forget that this happened 😻.

The tension between Cyrus and Anna was so palpable you could feel it steaming off the page. I love this authors take on shifters and the hierarchy of their society to really adds to the story and the characters internal battles because they are literally going against what they were taught, and how they we're raised. Truly a forbidden relationship, that is bound to cross the lines of obsession and insanity.

This book was so good! The world building was so good I felt like I was there. Cyrus is a ruthless king . He hates all
Humans. He has human slaves in his palace but they are really there for him to torture. He tortured and whips them To death shattering bones etc. Annalise and her fiancé Dimitri are captured by Cyrus King of the beasts. Dimitri becomes Cyrus’s generals sex slave and Annalise becomes a palace slave. She is beaten , stabbed , bones broken, raped and treated horribly by Cyrus and his beasts. Cyrus has parties where the entertainment is to torture and murder the human slaves. Annalise makes it through a couple of these and the Cyrus makes her his personal slave. She is forced to watch him have sex with a different woman or women every night. She fears him but has no desire or like for him. He becomes obsessed with her though . He’s alternately fcking her and breaking her bones throughout this book. He also almost beats her to death. He has the power to Heal her though so there is that… Annalise despises him Throughout. This is angsty and I know there are 3 more books to go
But I don’t see this ending well. It’s a heavy book but a page Turner. Good to the last drop! Reminds me a bit of GOT

This was not paranormal, and the fantasy elements were not strong. Romance did not exist, the sex was awkward and uncomfortable to read, and I must say I did not find myself caring for the characters or story. The plot was soon lost on me, and whatever wars were taking place felt one-sided. The writing could use some editing. Another abusive male character takes the lead once again in another shitty-labelled place as a "dark fantasy."

Honestly, I wasn't quite sure what to expect since I didn't love another book by this author before, but this was such a pleasant surprise. The King is a dark fantasy, um, romance? Not quite sure on the romance front, but it is something. There are triggers upon triggers, so it's definitely not for sensitive readers. There's a lot of physical and SA towards the heroine, a lot of it from the male lead. This book is refreshing in that nothing is romanticized nor sugar coated. It's dark and dirty and so wrong yet I couldn't look away. The premise is intriguing and, while there could be more of it, the world building paints a pretty clear picture of the beast vs human society and the war between them. The writing is a bit clunky at times, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment. I was engrossed and at the edge of my seat throughout. Book 2 has been written, but, right now, is only available on the author's Patreon. I don’t think I'll be able to wait for till next year, so I guess I'm off to Patreon...

The Evil King

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. The King is ruthless and hates humans, all but a particular female human. Well he hates Anna also, tbh. Buttttt he is drawn to her and he becomes obsessive over our dear Annalise. Now I wouldn’t really classify this as any kind of a romance bc Cyrus is very cruel. I was reading another review and they said this gave vibes of Quinn Blackbirds Black World Fae series, and I couldn’t agree more. As far as the Alpha males they are very similar. I just started on book 2, it’s not been published yet on Amazon, but the author has it on Patreon.

TWs: Rape & Domestic violence

This book held everything I hate in a MMC and yet, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I was glad I knew going into this how black it would be. There isn’t a ray of light to be had in this book. It is a cage in a basement where nobody will find you. This is the best way I can describe The King.

Humans are lower than rats in this book. The Beasts control most of the land and its King loathes Humans with a vengeance.

Cyrus, our MMC, is a law unto himself. He sees nothing wrong with raping women, torturing them, throwing them around like rag dolls or even murdering them in inventive and horrific ways. The man is the definition of a maniac.

I liked Anna a lot. She was a decent enough FMC for the story being told; I thought she was quite resourceful toward the end of the book. She didn’t have much choice in the beginning, in how she could behave. She didn’t have any leverage to get out of her dire situation - she did only what she could - survive. She does just that by omitting information from Cyrus and uses this to her advantage to finally escape him and his unique brand of madness.

I low key hated Dimitri. The man folded so quickly and easily. He grew up with Anna and they were in love and he gave up all those years of loyalty for her to his “master”. Like, get up off the floor and help her escape! He was too afraid of what would happen to himself instead of the horrors Anna had to go through. Her father ENTRUSTED Anna to him ffs. And now, he’s going to betray her. That sickened me more than Cyrus’ treatment of Anna and that’s saying something!

I’m not sure where this story is going to go in terms of Anna & Cyrus’ relationship. Logically, I don’t see a way for her to forgive or forget the horrors he forced her to endure. This isn’t a romance by ANY stretch of the imagination. But, this is a dark book so anything is possible. Maybe, just maybe, the child will bring them closer together and maybe Cyrus will take a pill and chill the fuck out.

This book managed to pull so many emotions out of me, but most of all: anger. I was livid reading most of this book and I can’t wait to dive into book 2!

So torn…. MMC and OW(s)

So out of h toe things I didn’t like, the worse was: mainly the MMC sleeping with OW the whole time basically. I love dark romances but can’t stand that. I actually almost stopped reading because of it. Because I paid for the book I wanted to see the first one through. It got really good once it stopped having all this OW moments while being with the MFC. The plot got very interesting and exciting. I genuinely believed he was done with being with OW. But at the end now I’m not sure if that’s going to be true in the next book so I’m honestly not even sure if I want to read it.

Yeah I’m probably weird that the OW was the issue, but the author made it clear it was dark so I had no problem with the dark stuff. Just can’t stand the OWs and not knowing if that kind of thing will be following into the next book.
