Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.

Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.

Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.

Silver Surfer #4 - Pits Silver Surfer & Thor at each under the manipulations of Loki. (4/5)

Tales Of Suspense #58 - Features Iron Man being tricked into thinking that the Chameleon is Captain America. Appearances by fellow Avengers Giant-Man, Wasp and the genuine Captain America. (2/5)

Marvel Team-Up #79 - A very unusual team-up as Spider-Man and Red Sonja fight Kulan Gath. It’s a weird and wild tale that only Marvel could deliver, brought together by John Byrne and Chris Claremont. Also, this tale is likely to be very rarely, if ever, reprinted as Marvel does not have the rights to publish Red Sonja material, at least as I’m writing this (these things do change). (5/5)

Uncanny X-Men #9 - Next up is The X-Men and the Avengers meeting for the first time. Things go about as well as you would expect. Shenanigans of epic proportions by the King himself, Jack Kirby. (4/5)

Marvel Feature #11 - These a long standing grudge match between the Hulk and the Thing. Every couple of years or so these two behemoths come to blows. This one isn’t quite as epic as others, but it is fun, an it also kicked off Ben Grimm’s team-up career that would quickly become Marvel Two-in-One. And the art is by Jim Starlin. (4/5)

Amazing Spider-Man #16 - The first meeting of Spider-Man and Daredevil is delightfully fun. They square off against the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime, but this is also a prime example of how Spider-Man has a long, long history of team-ups with other superheroes (although to be fair, I’d have to say that the first one was between Spider-Man and the Human Torch, which is sadly not included). Art for this one is, of course, by Steve Ditko. (3/5)

Overall this book isn’t quite a 4-star rating, but it has a lot going for it in some unexpected and hard to quantify ways, so I’ll give it a nudge to 4-stars.

When I was really into reading comics, I loved the team-up stories. There was always some kind of misunderstanding so that the two groups would fight, and then it would be cleared up and they would work together to take down the bad guy. The fight portion was always the fun part - who would win if the X-Men took on the Avengers or Spiderman went up against Daredevil?

The two stories I liked the most in this one were Spiderman and Red Sonja (with Chris Claremont and John Byrne - two of my favorite authors and artists) and The Thing with the Hulk. Definitely all old school and nostalgic.
