Tom McKay was a rising star in the publishing world. An expert editor, he also had an uncanny sense for when a book would be a success. But after an incident at a work-related event, his employers send him to Thailand to oversee the takeover of a publishing company there.
Tom has mixed feelings about this. Thailand is a country he loves but it’s also a land where echoes of the past await him. His life is one of many secrets, the main one being his taste for the BDSM scene and his role as a dom. He plunges into work and discovers a promising young writer who, though her tales are dark, shows a talent that Tom has never seen before. But when life imitates art with a series of shocking murders, he’s left with questions and suspicions. Will he uncover the truth or will the ghosts of the past come back to haunt him?
This book contains themes and scenes of a sexual nature. However, it is NOT erotica! If you are under 18, or overly sensitive to profanity or anything sexual, then this probably isn’t a book you’ll like.
Book editor Tom McKay is crafted impeccably as the main character with multiple faces whose complexity actually mirror the intricate plot that unfolds.
As a reader, I was swept away by his inner turmoil (told over his experiences in the 90s as in current times), his passion for the literary world, and the undeniable allure of backdrop that Thailand brings in.
(And without the author enumerating in all the clichés I normally read when somebody starts about Bangkok. He is a true Bangkok expert and only tells what's really relevant for the story.)
The portrayal of Tom's involvement in the BDSM scene is handled with a very deft touch, as its not everybody's sweet cookie to taste, but it is adding that needed extra dimension to his character without ever veering into gratuitousness.
And then there's that mystery at the heart of the novel, a gripping tale of murder and intrigue that kept me punching the pages on my Kindle until the very last page.
Steve W. Palmer's writing is exceptional, which I find very unique for a self publishing author. His ability to craft a compelling narrative populated by rich characters is highly creative, and I eagerly anticipate whatever literary delights he has in store for next. And I seriously will have to consider his previous books on Bangkok.
