Broken Chances

Rate this book
A young wife. A much older husband. Is it only the age gap that threatens to ruin their marriage?

When Margo marries Michael, she believes that her life will change forever. And it really does, only not in the way a young girl from a small country in Northern Europe thought it would.

Latvia, a dreamy land with rich historical heritage and endless beaches stretching for miles, for Margo, is a gloomy place where she would have to struggle for years to have a decent life. All she knows is her hometown – a depressing place built for the needs of the factory workers – dull commuting to the capital Riga, and a bar in the Old Town where she works, always full of loud and often unceremonious tourists.

Skipping a chance to explore her home country and the opportunities it might offer, Margo accepts Michael’s proposal and moves to a dramatically picturesque island in England.

A small, tightly-knit community, where everyone knows everyone and where nothing ever happens, is not particularly welcoming to a newcomer. Unfamiliar with local traditions and quirks, Margo often finds herself in awkward situations. Still, with each walk she takes along the coastal path on the small island she now calls home, Margo falls deeper in love with the stunning landscapes of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Alas, with each day she spends with Michael, she realises more clearly that her marriage is falling apart.

Margo keeps asking herself why what she thought was a chance of a lifetime turned into a disaster. Will she find the answer? And will she love again after having been bitterly disappointed in marriage and relationships?

Set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset in England, “Broken Chances” is a self-discovery journey with a dash of cosy mystery and clean romance.

P.S. Expect to be smitten by charming dogs and majestic horses.

I’ve been in love with books for as long as I remember myself. The typewriter my first attempts at writing had been made at still sits proudly on its shelf in the basement, and when I go down there, I always have an urge to save it from its exile.

I’ve always been writing something. Diaries, letters, poems, short stories. I’d even attempted to write a novel a couple of times when I was about thirteen. Still, there was always something more important than my writing.

There was always “real life” reminding me of its undeniable claims. “You have to study, you have to work, there is no place for fruitless dreaming,” it whispered. And I moved forward as if running on rails I couldn’t step down from.

I’d spent fifteen years, trying to fit into the office work pattern. Do you remember Kevin Kline in the “In & Out” movie – “men do not dance”? Well, that used to be my philosophy – real people don’t write books. They work, they build careers, they travel through the corporate jungle. And despite I was feeling miserable and out of place every day of that climbing the ladder process, I managed to build a relatively successful career after an ambitious shift from the private to the public sector. The job I had wasn’t boring. It was actually pretty exciting. I worked with internationally funded projects and met people from all over the world every day. But it failed to ignite a spark in my heart.
After my son was born, I had a unique chance to stop and rethink not only what I’d achieved so far, but what I really want from life. I made a decision to leave my old life behind, and I’ve never regretted it. Changes in the daily routine led naturally to changes in my way of thinking. I finally allowed myself to be who I really was.

Since then, I’ve published six books.

The Neglected Merge fantasy romance/drama trilogy:

- Book 1 “Neglected Merge”

(i) Silver Medal in the 2021 Global Book Awards in the Science Fiction / Fantasy category
(ii) Award Finalist in the 2021 Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest in the Fantasy General category
(iii) Honorable Mention in the 2021 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category.

- Book 2 “Tangle of Choices”
Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category.

- Book 3 “Shifting Directions”

Books set in Latvia:
- “Finding Your Way”
Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Cultural Diversity category.

- “The Accidental Cop”
(i) Finalist award in the Pacific Book Awards 2023 contest in the Best Thriller category;
(ii) Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Fiction Novel category.

Women's Fiction:
- "Broken Chances"

This is the best non-SFF self-published published book I read this year.

"Don't start by looking for big issues. Always begin with checking the small things. Correct them, if the problem persists, it will inevitably be easier to find."

Brilliant author Eve Koguce continues to display astounding range and depth, on the heels of writing her poignant and haunting crime noir/police procedural 'The Accidental Cop', by tackling abusive intimate partner relationships, and the courage of a woman to forge the destiny she chooses for herself, in the brilliant, thought-provoking, romance-mystery novel 'Broken Chances'.

It takes no small measure of skill to deliver a book that blends so many sub-genres, addressing such an important theme as confronting abusive relationships, all the while delivering tenderly on the promise of an emerging love interest, and blending a pinch of small-town intrigue to boot.

Yet Koguce certainly displays such skill, and the results are a beautifully-crafted novel full of triumph, tragedy, love, friendship, whimsy, and resilience, in the backdrop of the spectacular western English countryside.

In 'Broken Chances', young Margo, native of Latvia, raised by a loving mother, seeks happiness, fulfillment, and to escape penury and dead-end jobs in her homeland.

Enter Michael, a much older, wealthy Englishman. He woos Margo, wining and dining her, offering her financial stability, attentiveness, and the 'perfect' marriage in the idyllic locale of Dorset's cosseted but stunningly lovely island community of Southbay.

What Michael doesn't tell Margo, is that the 'perfect' marriage entails Margo being Michel's domestic slave, with him controlling her every movement, subjecting her to his increasingly demanding, cold, harassing, even violent behaviour, in the rare intervals when he is home at all.

Surrounded by picturesque, fascinating scenery, and idiosyncratic yet interesting locals, Margo attempts to strike out and form genuine relationships. At times, due to tribalism, she is rebuffed. Yet, she still does find kind and worthwhile friends in her new environment, and even an attractive man whose charms she is determined to resist, being devoted to Michael, despite her unhappiness and his abuse.

Yet the reprehensible Michael is determined to keep Margo completely under his control, subservient, isolated from those who might help her break free of his clutches. And despite the increasingly dire domestic situation Margo finds herself in, there remains familiarity, security, even reassurance, in her matrimonial bonds to Michael. Will Margo find a way forward, without him, or risk her physical and emotional well-being by staying in a marriage that appears doomed?

"I don't want to be like this boat: always fighting against the currents with no one but yourself to count on."

A reader can only celebrate the aplomb with which Koguce handles the theme of dealing with a partner who engages in a pattern of behaviour to control, the devastating consequences of domestic abuse, the heartbreaking suffering of the soul of the person abused. Koguce, realistically, depicts that breaking the cycle of abuse is neither linear nor easy.

The author demonstrates that there can be moments of calm, even pleasure, in an abusive relationship. And in these moments of respite from the horror, where one can fool oneself: 'it isn't that bad'; that perhaps the partner will change; that the abuse can stop; that things can be salvaged; that it's better to be with the abuser than be alone. Those are the moments where the abused person backslides, subjecting themselves to more abuse, in the vain hope things can improve.

Koguce shows us that healing from emotional abuse requires intense self-care, supportive friends and family, and the fortitude to prioritize self-worth, and rebuilding self-esteem. Most of all, it requires immense courage, which Margo possesses. A quiet, indomitable courage that will make the reader root unabashedly for this character, as she tries to find her way out of a terrible marriage, learn and adapt to a new culture, and discover her true self.

Besides Margo, there are plenty of well-fleshed-out auxiliary characters to fall in love with, such as Finley, Jacqueline and Suzie, who will make you appreciate the power of friends and loved ones who have your back through the worst of circumstances.

Though I have highlighted them earlier, the novel is certainly not all heavy themes - it is punctuated with humour, and cozy mystery. And, of course, one is treated to the evocative, delightful prose of Koguce, as she describes with loving detail the gorgeous coastal heaven which is that part of England forming the novel's main setting, and pays homage to the beauty of Latvia as well.

Overall, Koguce does a fabulous job of writing the locations where the book takes place. The reader will feel they are right there with Margo, as she discovers the wonders of the seaside, hiking along rugged coasts, watching the sea spray against the rocks, hearing the gulls cry. And the quiet, intimate moments of comradeship, at tea-time, or a gossipy conversation in the high street, or an exciting trip to bustling London, are all so vividly written.

A fantastic story of growth and change, a testament to the power of bravery and perseverance, in a quaint and charming setting, full of wonderful characters, "Broken Chances" is yet another great achievement for one of my favourite authors, Eve Koguce.

An exploration of female solidarity in the face of injustice

“Broken Choices” is a beautifully written novel set against the captivating backdrop of Doucette, a small island in England. Through her poetic language, Koguce immersed me in the picturesque atmosphere of this coastal haven, where Margo embarks on a mission to build a new life amid the challenges of her foreign surroundings. The vivid descriptions allowed me to savor not only the scenic walks along narrow coastal trails but also the essence of a delightful English summer.

At the heart of the story is Margo's tumultuous marriage, which she desperately seeks to mend. Koguce skillfully unravels the complexities of domestic abuse, shedding light on the challenges faced by women, particularly those without support systems. Margo's struggle resonates deeply, underscoring the painful reality that leaving such relationships is far from simple. Koguce poignantly illustrates the importance of women standing together to overcome adversity and advocate for positive change.

“Broken Choices” is a compelling and insightful read that combines lyrical prose with profound themes of resilience and empowerment. Eve Koguce has crafted a narrative that not only engages the senses but also inspires a call to action, making it a must-read for everyone who appreciates literature that challenges conventions.

wonderful read

"Broken Chances" by Eve Koguse is a beautifully written tale of love, disillusionment, and self-discovery. The vivid descriptions of the Dorset coast contrast sharply with the bleak reality of Margo's crumbling marriage. Koguse skillfully explores the complexities of relationships and the challenges of starting anew in a foreign land. A captivating read.

Margot has moved to the UK with her older English husband. She finds she is trapped in a loveless relationship with a man who doesn't consider her needs. Despite her martial unhappiness, Margot sets about getting to know the Dorset countryside and the people who make up the small island community. The characters are strong and believable and the reader is transported to the south coast of England with the beautifully descriptive writing. I have read a number of books by the author and this one is easily my favourite.

Broken Chances by Eve Koguce is a book meant to be savoured. Definitely don't dash through it. Don't try to sit and finish it in one sitting but enjoy it , get on with your tasks, mull over it and then come back to it .

While you are away reflect on the challenges facing Margo, the protagonist of Broken Chances. A young girl she moved away from the hard but protective life she lived in Latvia to start anew with Michael, a much older man in a picturesque part of Dorset, England.

You ponder on her disastrous marriage and the strain she is under dealing with an unloving, uncaring and demanding man. You marvel as she tries to find escape in her friendships with supportive women in the community and hold her own at the same time.

And then cupid strikes. When Margo is attracted to another man much closer to her in age you know that this is a dangerous attraction, but you the reader saw it coming despite Margo's best attempts to remain dedicated to her cold and calculating husband.

Which way will life take her? Will Margo find her independence in England, will she be free of the loveless marriage that binds her, will she find love again, and finally will she flee and return to her home country ?

These are questions that need answering and for that dear reader you need to pick up your copy of Broken Chances by the lovely Eve Koguce.

Finally my thoughts on the writing... The author amazes me with her understanding of the human psyche. She delves deep and leaves you the reader anticipating what is coming next. She does such a marvelous job of sharing Margo's inner most thoughts, fears and yearnings that you can't help but find a place for this beautiful young woman in your heart. Additionally Eve Koguce spins amazing pictures through her descriptions of the beautiful country side. She makes the book and the narration come alive and one can literally visualize Margo living her life.

As I said earlier, those of you who adore hard earned journeys of self discovery go ahead and pick this gem up, you won't be disappointed.

I really loved this book, I felt myself constantly wanting Margo to succeed at life especially away from her husband. The author really makes you feel like you want to be included in Margo’s inner circle of friends and the details in the scenery made me feel as if I were there.
I highly recommend this book and I’m very happy at the ending

"Broken Chances" by Eve Koguce

🩵If you want to dive into a brilliant, contemporary, clean romance with slight twists, beautiful sceneries, and cozy mystery, "Broken Chances" is what you need.

🩵The Plot: We follow a young Latvian girl named Margo. She is married to a man who is much older than her. At first sight, her life seems perfect – the cozy house, loving husband, and picturesque views of Southwest England. Margo and Michael live happily on the Isle of Southbay. But, all of a sudden, it appears that the rift in the lute starts directly after the wedding day. Time flies, and this rift becomes more and more visible not just for Margo but a small community. Margo does her best to glue broken marriage, dreams, and expectations, but things get worse and worse. Can one mistake ruin everything? Or is even a little mistake part of something bigger?

🐰The Writing Style: This book is one more gem from the incredibly talented author - Eve Koguce. I savored every single line of this novel. It is written at a comforting pace, with slight twists and turns. There are a lot of curious historical facts and notes. This contemporary, clean romance is written emotionally and cleverly. There is a balance between feelings and a rational mind. These two are waltzing perfectly together throughout the whole novel. This glorious page-turner is illuminative, encouraging, wise, captivating, heart-warming, and unputdownable.

🩵The Characters: Even though the community where the main characters live is small, the number of characters is crowded. There are so many well-thought and vivid characters in this novel. I truly loved how the author managed to focus on how they all sit, smile, laugh, move, speak, etc. – the slightest detail brings them closer to me, making them memorable.

❤️‍🔥The Fave Quote: "Don't start by looking for big issues. Always begin with checking the small things. Correct them, if the problem persists, it will inevitably be easier to find."

❣️Would I read other books by this author: Absolutely, yes!

✨My humble rating is: 5/5

🩵P.S. If you have read and enjoyed "Gone With The Wind" and "The Thorn Birds," you'll enjoy reading "Broken Chances." The novel also slightly reminds me of "The Casual Vacancy" by JK Rowling and one of the novels by Liane Moriarty.

🩵Eve Koguce is a master of glorious contemporary, clean romance with a historical layer and cozy, mysterious vibes.

This is the second book I have read by Eve Koguce. Like the first book I read, she quickly had me absorbed into her story with lush, vivid scenes and richly woven, unique characters. Margo is a young woman who lives in Latvia with her mother. Despite the natural beauty of the coast and the diverse cultural aspects of Lativa, Margo and her mother live frugally, with low paying jobs, residing in a post-Soviet era apartment building of blocked cement. The poverty and lack of opportunities make Margo yearn for a better life. When Michael Birkett, a wealthy English executive twice her age, began to flatter and lavish her with gifts, she can't resist the lure of a different lifestyle. A rushed proposal of marriage has the naïve young woman impulsively accepting, taking a chance on a better future in England. Be careful what you wish for.

The move to the Isle of Southbay on the spectacular Jurassic coast of Dorset initially seems like a dream come true to Margo… until reality sets in. Starting a new life married to a virtual stranger who is not at all who he seems is a rude awakening. Not only has he lost his wealth, but his whole personality becomes abusive, controlling, and demanding. The new country and idyllic island Margo crave are just as unwelcoming. As in most small tight-knit communities, it has its own quirks, prejudices, and suspicions of strangers. Margo realizes that transplanting into a foreign culture is not as easy as it seems. She might as well be on an emotional island by herself with no way out. How will she ever fit in?

This is a beautifully written story. Margo is a compelling character I truly enjoyed getting to know. She is honest, open, and has a giving heart that attracts people. She is adaptable and a survivor, willing to give people the benefit of doubt and learn from her mistakes. Her personal growth and development are brilliantly written. Michael is a chameleon, wearing whatever face that will net the most advantageous results. Finley is a gem. Jacqueline and Suzie have layers of their own and are just the friends and support Margo needs. This character driven story kept me turning pages and wanting to spend more time getting to know all of them. A lovely story I thoroughly enjoyed.

Many love stories end with the hope of a “happily ever after” life, leaving the reader optimistic that everything has worked out for the best. In Broken Chances by Eve Koguce the story begins with Margo and Michael, recent newlyweds, starting their lives together on an island off the coast of Dorset in the UK where Margo quickly falls in love with the beautiful sea and landscapes.

We enter Margo’s mind and experiences to discover a young woman who is determined to forge her new life, combining her marriage with a business career and visions of a happy and fulfilling life, far away from the gloom of her homeland, Latvia. She has big dreams but is thwarted at every turn by her husband in her attempts to break out of routine of daily homemaking set out by Michael, leaving her no time to explore her own career interests. It turns out that Michael has very old-fashioned and detailed expectations about the place of women. Before long Margo feels confined by the drudge of following her husband’s rigid orders even when balanced by the joy of meeting new neighbours and exploring her magnificent surroundings once her chores are completed.

As tensions grow between Margo and Michael, she struggles to find a way forward, still hoping for a better life and fulfilling work. Finding her way requires Margo to show courage, resilience and the strength to stand up to Michael’s increasingly limiting requirements, supported by friends. She is determined to change the living conditions in which she finds herself. How does this turn out? It is a compelling story that will have readers turning pages to learn what happens.

Eve Koguce shows brilliance in her writing, bringing vivid details and life to the settings and to the characters. Her prose is so eloquent I still have detailed images of the scenes from Margo’s shoreline walks even though I have never been to that part of the UK. Her characters are very relatable and complex, and some may be similar to people the reader already knows. The dramatic and dark passages are realistic and superbly crafted.

This is a book that I will think about for a very long time. I highly recommend it.

A story about a young woman who marries a much older man who treats her more like a maid than a wife. He takes her to England where he lives and becomes more controlling. She makes friends in England and over time she realizes she’s done staying in a loveless marriage. With vivid descriptions of the scenery and English coast, I became mesmerized and felt as if I were there in the charming coastal town. I loved reading Broken Chances and look forward to the authors next novel. This book was well written & I recommend it.

Broken Chances is a book that can’t be pigeonholed into one category. It is full of mystery, romance, heartache, comedy, and tragedy, with beautiful descriptions of the southwest coast of England. And since the author and the protagonist are both from Latvia, the descriptions of life there are at once poignant and informative. The book flows nicely from start to finish, with some absolutely hilarious scenes between friends, pulling you along wondering what will happen next to Margo, and you won’t be disappointed in how things work out. Highly recommended.

Broken Chances is a story about Margo, who leaves her home in Latvia to marry a man twice her age and joins him in beautiful coastal England. It doesn’t take long for Margo to see that she acted impulsively when they quickly fall out of love, and she begins to see that he’s simply using her as a cook, housemaid and accountant rather than treating her like a wife and equal partner. Lonely Margo eventually figures out the customs of the reserved locals and begins to make some friends. She becomes reacquainted with Finley, a handsome young man closer to her age, who is her husband‘s friend’s son. When her already doomed marriage becomes abusive, she begins looking for a way out, and her feelings for Finley begin to blossom. Margo has conflicting ideas about what’s right in her impossible situation and the reader begins to wonder if she’ll find her happily ever after. Beautifully written, I loved all of the stunning descriptions of Dorset and Cornwall and now want to visit them more than ever. Between my concern for Margo and her predicament and a small subplot of a town mystery, I kept wanting to turn the pages. You’ll especially enjoy this gentle read if you love travel, nature, dogs, and horses. 4.5 stars.

Strong independent characters.

Love triangle- human needs- human urges- adulthood cravings & much more.

I’m very fascinated by a book’s cover- that is a tempting characteristic which makes me read a book. Having said so I never judge books by their covers as well. Beautiful cover. Reading is a hobby for many it’s an escape to a calmer world. But when you’re a loner it is more than just a hobby it’s a world of clues/answers to unanswered questions of life in general.
Broken Chances is a great book which has received many awards as well for it’s story which includes a strong female married character & her struggles in her marriage & the journey of the character- her life in a beautiful place Southbay with cottages, countryside views, strong characters throughout.
I liked reading this book. It can be read as a standalone from the other award winning fantasy series books written by Eve Koguce.

Broken Chances is a story that consists of a multitude of facets all woven into one beautiful tale of self-discovery, unlikely bonds that have been forged and proven to be a force to be reckoned with and love.
From the very first few pages, I had found the main character, Margo, to be an endearing young woman who has yet to experience the world beyond Riga and the security of her mother and friends.

Margo marries an older man, Michael, and they return to live in his home on the Dorset coast. Margo’s bubble is burst and it’s from here on in that the story takes its heartbreaking shape. I found myself muttering words of encouragement, joy and anger; you can’t help but want to give Margo a hug and help her. Eve Koguce writes with a simplicity that you can imagine Margo narrating her story over a muffin and a cup of tea with the supportive friends that she has made since moving to the island.
Eve Koguce’s use of description is beautiful…particularly when describing the stunning shores of the south west of England. You are there; there’s a great balance of tension, things that make you feel warm and enough detail involving domestic and psychological abuse without the need to be graphic. This writer has a wonderful way of writing which is very special.
I cannot recommend Broken Chances or the author enough.

What a beautiful, heartwarming story

I really enjoyed reading about Margo’s journey. Stories of women finding themselves and fighting for their happiness are my favorite.

And this book has it all. Love, friendship, loyalty, self discovery, growth, courage. Oh, and breathtaking landscapes, of course — the writing is so beautiful, I felt like I was walking those picturesque routes along with Margo.

I loved this beautifully written book that transported me to the breathtakingly gorgeous landscape of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, England. This book is about friendship, turmoil, forbidden love, resilience, mother-daughter relationships and so mush more. It also deals with spousal abuse which is written with grace and is not overly graphic. The storyline will elicit a plethora of emotions and take you on a journey you won't soon forget.

Margo, the main character lives in Latvia where she's working at a restaurant doing grunt work with no means to better herself. That's until Michael, a man almost twice her age, wanders into the restaurant and sweeps her off her feet offering her a better future. She's smitten with the idea and falls hard.

They move to the coast away from everything she knows and feels familiar with.. Soon after they move she discovers Michael is not what he portrayed. He's demanding and controlling with weird quirks he insists on her following.

Starting a new business Michael travels which gives Margo the opportunity to explore her new surroundings only to feel like an outcast and all alone. But she perseveres and soon meets locals that become the type of friends that are what every girl dreams of having. They are a great support when things take a turn for the worst at the home front.

Michael becomes abusive and increasingly difficult to deal with. As Margo submerges herself in the culture she befriends the wife of one of Michael's friends and consequently her son who is close to Margo's age. They strike up a friendship and share a mutual love for horses. Feelings develop between the two of them but Margo feels trapped in a loveless, abusive marriage. Will she find her Prince Charming and get her happily ever after she so deserves?

The short synopsis only touches on the story line. You'll fall in love with the characters, who are likable and relatable. Except Michael who you'll learn to hate. The landscape is described in such depth I felt like I was there. The friendships that blossomed were heartwarming. And there are animals!! I always love animals in books as it makes the storyline seem more real.

I highly recommend this book to those who want to be swept away and left feeling like they just took a trip to an enchanted land.

Margo, in her mid 20s, has a life in Latvia with friends, a mother who is not demonstrative but who loves her, a budding career as a bookkeeper, and a tiny but warm flat. But when middle-aged businessman Michael woos her with fancy dinners, boat trips and fun, she willingly gives it all up to marry him and move to England. Not just England, but a tiny island off the stunningly beautiful Jurassic coast. Margo falls in love with her new home, where the tightly knit community welcome her eagerness to learn to fit in - in their restrained English way.

Margo also works hard to be a good wife, as that’s the role Michael has given her while he sets about building his new conservatory business. While Margo’s life has changed, so too, it seems has Michael. He’s no longer the fun, caring man who courted her, but one who demands dinner on the table, the house spotless, and free help keeping the business’s books in order.

Disillusioned, but not wanting to give up easily, Margo struggles with what to do, and who to confide in. But then she meets the son of Michael’s oldest friend, a young man only a year or two younger than Margo, and her decision to marry seems that it will become an even greater burden.
Set against a beautifully described landscape, my heart went out to Margo caught in a web which threatened to destroy her youth and future, if not worse.

But what makes this young, untested woman a heroine worth rooting for is the way in which she, although betrayed herself, actively seeks to extricate herself without betraying her husband – and despite her growing love for another man. She recognises how her own naivete has lead her here, but rather than bemoaning her fate or running home to her mother, Margo grasps the nettle and gets on with sorting out her life. (She reminded me of Raine in my own novel, Keepers, which is perhaps why I loved her so much.)

The author builds a delightful cast of secondary characters, mostly women ‘of a certain age’ who close ranks around their young friend, alone in a foreign land. I loved this theme of women helping others, whatever their cultural differences.

And we also have a little ‘murder’ mystery as a sub-plot to spike our interest, simmering along and with a perfect reveal.

The richly emotional writing of Broken Chances struck me as coming from the author’s heart, suggesting personal stakes in Margo’s story. Certainly the authenticity of the voice is strong. I found myself totally engaged in a tale which conveys so beautifully a very different experience.
Thank you, Eve, for a rewarding read.

After reading Accidental Cop by Eve Koguce, and absolutely loving it, I was eager to dive into another one of her books, and Broken Chances most definitely did not disappoint. The novel follows Margo, who leaves her home country of Latvia, seeking the promise of a better future in a picturesque Dorset village after marrying an older man. She believes she has stepped into a life she could only have dreamed of: love, security, beauty, and the hope of belonging. But beneath the surface, her “happy ever after” is crumbling. Her husband grows increasingly hostile, and her attempts to adapt to her new community are met with confusion and sometimes coldness from the locals. The loneliness and fear she feels are palpable, yet she finds solace and fleeting freedom in the coastal walks that she cherishes, with the vast ocean offering her both comfort and perspective.

What struck me most about this story is the extraordinary depth of Margo’s character. She is not simply a victim of circumstance, she is layered and conflicted, and her desire to keep the peace clashes painfully with her need to protect her own spirit. The subtle details - how she questions her own worth, how she holds onto hope even when hope feels fragile, the weight of her choices and her quiet courage in confronting them - make her journey heartbreakingly real. The prose itself is graceful, almost poetic at times. The descriptions of the Dorset landscape are vivid and textured, painted not through the eyes of a native but through the fresh perspective of someone seeing it anew. This brings a unique lens to the setting, as places take on a sense of wonder and discovery, while the cultural differences add depth. Broken Chances is more than a story of sadness, fear, and longing, it is also a quiet testament to resilience, friendship, self-discovery, and the courage it takes to reclaim one’s life. Eve Koguce has a remarkable gift for combining emotional intensity with beautiful, immersive writing. I can’t praise this enough. A must read!

In this line, author Eve Koguce captures the essence of one abused woman's struggle: There is security in predictability, no matter how suffocating. And thus, she remains, until she realizes that, within a relationship, one can still be alone.

This is the story of a young woman who married an older man. Margo's life, although not desperate before, had not really been moving forward, and Michael offered a new life in a new country in their own cottage, surrounded by beautiful vistas and new people. Shouldn't she be satisfied? He had lifted her to a new situation; cleaning and cooking in his cottage to his exact instructions, shielded from forming friendships or any other social opportunity, except walking to the bakery in the beautiful countryside to get the exact muffins he demanded--what girl could ask for more? Naturally, any break for freedom, like an afternoon in London with new friends, was surely wrong. Bit by bit, the subtleties of a controlling relationship take shape: Margo becomes increasingly isolated, seemingly dependent on her husband for every breath she takes.

Margo had her "happily ever after" early in life, and the gradual disintegration of her relationship is tastefully documented. The reader should not expect sensational details or villanization; yet, the author's gentle storytelling is much more effective. Margo cannot simply "walk away"; instead, she must claw and scrape her way toward independence, sliding backwards and struggling forward again. Will she select a second "happily ever after", relying on a beautiful man, surrounded by well-off and supportive new friends? Or will she commit herself to learning her own worth, her own power?

I thank Eve Koguce for a beautifully crafted story with authentic characters, portrayed so vividly and accurately. Some characters we identify with and have empathy for, and other characters we step back from and still say "how human they are." This is a work of fiction that reached me on a deeply personal level for, like all good fiction, it reflects life.

Margo is a waitress who had grown up with a single parent, in Riga. Struggling in her environment and job, one day, she meets her husband, Michael, an older man and is smitten. She moves to Dorset, UK, into her new husband’s family home and now, a long way from home, starts her new life.
But on beginning her new life, her prince turns to predator, inflicting abusive control over her.
Margo is resilient and adapts to a new culture, behaviours, and traditions. Her community is friendly and close-knit. However, her husband’s behaviour is that of domestic abuse and she realises that the love is dying in her marriage.
Then a neighbour, Betty, is found dead and whilst at first it seems natural causes, Margo suspects otherwise.
Margo grows close to another neighbour, Finley, who shows her a kindness and respect lacking from her husband. But will she be able to leave her marriage? And what really happened to Betty?
Broken Chances is filled with excellent scene setting, descriptions, and emotions.
At times there is tension, written with emotion that transports you into the scene. The cultural knowledge and expressions was also really nice to read.
The author writes very sensitively about domestic abuse and Margo’s struggle with her own mental health at times, due to her circumstances.
This book is about readjusting, realising our worth, and community.
I immediately clicked with Margo and the setting of the novel which created a lovely visual for me as I read. It was also lovely reading about animal characters and these, and the human characters were diverse and helped move the story forward.
A beautiful book with a protagonist that you can’t help root for. Another excellent story by Eve. Highly recommended.

“Broken Chances” is the absorbing and affecting tale of Margo, a twenty-two-year-old woman stuck in a loveless marriage to a man almost thirty years her senior. (Trigger warnings for domestic abuse and an averted sexual assault.)
Margo met Michael in her native Latvia, and he charmed her with his amiability. After the wedding, Margo moved with her husband to a picturesque coastal isle of Southbay, Dorset, England. In her new home, she struggles to learn the customs and dialects of the locals. Her most significant challenge is to try to please a husband who has become aloof, fastidious, and critical. Michael stops accepting invitations from friends, isolating Margo from others. Only on his trips to work sites is Margo able to relax and form friendships with other in the community, including an attractive young man she does her best to avoid.
Ms. Koguce is a talented writer who transports the reader to the beautiful seaside setting of Southbay while painting a vivid portrait Margo’s struggles and the people she encounters. I adored “Broken Chances,” and look forward to the author’s next book!

Eve Koguce’s Broken Chances is a poignant and immersive novel that follows Margo, a twenty-two-year-old Latvian woman trapped in a stifling marriage with her much older English husband, Michael. Relocating to the picturesque Isle of Southbay in Dorset, England, Margo finds her new life far from the dream she envisioned. Struggling with isolation and her husband’s growing emotional distance, Margo grapples with the challenges of adapting to a new culture and breaking free from a restrictive relationship.

Koguce's narrative shines with its vivid depiction of the coastal landscape and the richly drawn community. The author’s words capture the beauty of Southbay while exploring Margo’s internal and external conflicts. The novel excels in portraying Margo’s gradual transformation to a resilient woman determined to reclaim her independence.

With its engaging characters, Broken Chances offers a compelling story of personal growth and courage. The book’s evocative setting and relatable characters create an engrossing reading experience. Highly recommended for those who enjoy emotionally resonant stories set against beautiful backdrops, this novel left me with a lasting impact.

A Quietly Haunting Journey of Love and Loss...

Eve Koguce's Broken Chances is as much about the beautiful but rough landscapes of Dorset as it is about the landscapes of the heart. Margo, a young woman from Latvia, thinks that getting married to an older man and moving to another country will make her life better. Instead, she is stuck between broken promises and an island community that doesn't know what to do with her. The calm beauty of the coast is a sharp contrast to the loneliness in her home, and that tension is present on every page.

Koguce writes in a way that feels almost like a confession, showing Margo's disappointment with hints of strength and hope. The end result is a story that doesn't rush to give answers but instead lets readers sit with the pain, the beauty, and the chance to start over. This book is for anyone who has ever wondered about the life they chose. It's tender, atmospheric, and quietly powerful. Highly recommended.

I absolutely devoured BROKEN CHANCES by author Eve Koguce, her newest work set in Dorset, England. This work of women’s fiction tells the story of Margo, a young Latvian woman who after struggling with few economic opportunities in her home country, accepts a marriage proposal from a man thirty years her senior who she believes cares for her… only to learn as soon as she follows him to England that she has made a terrible mistake.

The descriptions and setting are beautifully done, allowing the reader to capture the feel of life in the small town Margo has moved to, and also the constant sense of tension and dread that hovers over her every move. The writing is very deliberate in crafting her relationship with Michael and as we see more and more of what life is like for her, and control and emotional abuse turn to more, we see how completely Margo is trapped and how she will have to find some way to save herself. I enjoyed the female friendships, particularly Susie and Jacqueline. Women’s fiction is one of my favorite genres to read and this was a delight! 5/5 stars.

Eve Koguce's BROKEN CHANCES is a novel chronicling the marriage of Margo and Michael Birkett. Margo is a delightful young woman married to a bastard two decades older than she. Thankfully, the bastard works out of town on some construction project, returning home for the weekend every Thursday evening. This leaves Margo, a Latvian native, to explore the village of Dorset, visit shops and make new friends from Monday till Thursday when she reverts back to her handmaiden's role.

Every time I picked up this wonderful book, I felt like I was on holiday riding Koguce's lush descriptions of the English countryside from Southbay to Cornwall—but then Thursday rolls around and that bastard Michael shows up again.

At times, you'll what to throttle Margo for sticking to this arrangement and, always, you'll urge her on when she speaks of divorce. What will it take?

A quiet story about hope and new beginnings.
Broken Chances is a gentle, reflective novel about dreams of a better life and the quiet realization that changing countries does not automatically change who we are. A young woman from a small country marries an older man from a more “posh” world, and though he is not always as kind or easy as she hopes, life still surprises her with a fairytale ending.

The story warmly portrays both her homeland and her new life in the UK, creating a thoughtful and emotional backdrop for her journey. Calm, heartfelt, and hopeful, this book is perfect for readers who enjoy soft storytelling, modern fairytales, and stories that remind us to believe in second chances and small miracles.

Broken Chances is a heartfelt journey of love, loss, and self-discovery. Margo’s story, set against the stunning Jurassic Coast, is both tender and thought-provoking, with charming touches of dogs, horses, and small-town intrigue. A beautiful read for anyone who enjoys clean romance with depth.
