Taggart and Cassie are eager to put last summer’s tragic events behind them and the start of college is just the ticket, but it is proving to be easier said than done.
University life is certainly an adjustment, though maybe not in the same way. Taggart is enjoying the stimulating and mind-expanding fruits of the academic world at Truman University, but Cassie is finding the changes to be overwhelming and worries that her boyfriend is drifting away now that he is less dependent on her.
The discovery of a body hanging inside Taggart’s apartment, an apparent suicide, shatters their quiet reality. Taggart becomes the prime focus of the lead detective when evidence that the victim plagiarized Taggart's old papers is uncovered. When a second hanging victim is found—someone who expressed displeasure with Taggart—nerves on campus fray, and the speculation about Taggart’s involvement deepens. The campus goes into a full lockdown following a third suicide, worrying that a triggering environment has developed at the university.
Could the string of deaths be part of a larger problem at Truman, or is this the work of something—or someone—more sinister? Once again, Taggart and Cassie are caught in the middle, and their luck may have run out this time.
DL Hammons wrote his first piece of fiction decades ago to impress a girl (he was moderately successful) and never looked back.
Growing up as a military brat, DL moved around quite a bit as a kid. After graduating from LSU and raising a family in several southern states, he now makes his home in Central Arkansas, where he has spent the last dozen years perfecting his voice, splitting his writing time between YA and Adult Mystery/Suspense. Besides being an author, DL claims that the most interesting thing about him is that he lacks a sense of smell. Other passions include (but are not limited to) his family (including his two mini-Australian Sheppards), music, movies, video gaming, and cool weather camping.
MOVING FEAR - his YA Supernatural Horror debut is due out early 2026.
This is a 4.5 star book and this series is building up to be a 5 star read. We continue the Taggart journey and the twist and turn s don’t stop in Jerk! DL Hammons makes you wanna keep reading and turning pages to see what happens next! Prick and jerk are a must read!!!
Taggart McGill and girlfriend, Cassie, are college freshmen. They are trying to navigate through college life when there is a suicide. It was a lot person connected to Taggart and Cassie. Is it really a suicide or something else?
I enjoyed this book! It’s a great addition to the Taggart McGill Mystery collection!
I love the writing style of the author. Another fantastic read. An engaging story, well developed characters, and the ending blew my mind that I never expected .
I am still trying to process what the hell just happened (in a good way). What a freak cliff hanger! This book was written so well. I have loved everything DL has written thus far.
JERK…. This was definitely a five star read for me!
This book by DL Hammons kept me on my toes!! I caught myself just turning the pages like crazy and not wanting to stop. My most favorite thing about this book was how he left a little cliff-hanger at the end of each chapter and had you trynna process what the heck you just read; ill just keep it at that!
Jerk is just as good as prick!!! Once you start reading you won’t want to put it down!!the gang has a new mystery to solve!! Will they solve it before one or all of them end up dead??
"Bravery comes in all forms and measures, from the smallest insignificant act to the grand heroic gesture. But there's one thing they all have in common—the lack of an expiration date."
Sometimes, we all can act like "jerks," but the important part is holding awareness and taking steps to improve ourselves a little each day.
Don does not shy away from the hard topics, and yet there are likely to be jerks that come to critique this piece of art! I want to emphasize that this book deserves the spotlight of everyone's praise!
Jerk is written with such honest and raw emotions. The vulnerability of the author and the characters shines through each page. The reader will hold the suspense and fear alongside our favorites; including Taggart and Cassie! The reader is sucked into the story as the layers get pulled back, revealing pain, heartbreak, human flaws, honest mistakes, trauma, abuse, loss, and support.
This wouldn't be a DL Hammons book without the honor and appreciation of being able to experience such craftmanship! Anxiety builds in those final chapters where the reader has only just begun to breathe a sigh of relief. You're quickly jerked back into a world of doubt and mistrust as a few loose ends get highlighted! Who could be wanting Taggart McGill that isn't one of us admiring readers?
This author is brilliant. Everything about this universe pulls me in from the first page, and this book has just as a good start as the first one had. I really like that we get to see a glimpse from the past within the prologue, to then get to jump into the story and meet our favourite characters again.
Now what makes me love these books the most are the characters. The story itself is good as well, don't get me wrong, but it's not the kind of mystery/thriller that would normally get a high rating for me. I want more clues, I want to have the chance to guess who it is, I want it to be there in front of us the whole time and give us the whole "ohhhhhhh, how did I miss THAT" moment. These books don't really do that. But, for this series, it doesn't bother me. It's a YA, so for me the characters are more important than the mystery, and what I really like with both PRICK and JERK is that they are believable. The characters are not doing things so stupid and dangerous that you'll roll your eyes wondering why the hell they won't just talk to someone in charge. Just as in PRICK, they are right. They don't have enough to convince anyone. They have already told the police what they think are going on, and that Taggart is not the one doing it, and they weren't listened to. So they decide to try to find out enough to be able to give the right people the information they need.
It's realistic. It's not overly stupid. It makes me like them a lot more than I usually like YA characters. Then that danger seems to follow them wherever they go, that's not something they can control.
Also shout out to the LGTB+ rep that doesn't feel like it's just there only to have some representation and make people happy. It's natural, it fits the story, and the way the group handles it. Perfect. Love it. Hats off to the author.
I'm rambling. Let's move on to the characters in this book.
Cassie - I liked her a lot more than in the first one. She's finding her personality. She's sweet, caring and would take a bullet to protect her friends.
Taggart - I mean, I've been biased since the first moment we met him, so you know. I love him. His little quirks, the way he doesn't talk around important topics, his bluntness that isn't meant to be rude but can come off as it anyway. I just adore him.
Delta - MUCH better in this book. She annoyed me quite a bit in the first one, but her character was much more enjoyable in this one, and much easier to understand why Cassie is friends with her.
Brandon - I don't know what to say about Brandon. He's kinda a dick, and in the beginning I hated him as much as the other characters did, but later on when he was trying to do better I feel like he got crap for things that weren't even that bad? He changed majorly, and idk, giving him looks for each comment seems a bit rude, because it's still his personality and while he doesn't need to comment on everything, it's still who he is and I don't think it would be fair to take that away from him. It didn't feel like everything he said and commented was to be mean, just the way he is, and I do think Delta can chill with her elbowing a bit.
Tony - Darling Tony. Just read the book. You'll get me.
Chewy - Still a darling, still love him. I sense pain for him in the next one, and I hope we get to know him on a deeper level still. He's young and a bit immature, showing up like he did, but hey, how else could the author have included him in a story where everyone else went to college without him?
Tunes - My darling Tunes. I want even more of him. And I hope for a happy ending for him and Delta. They both deserve it.
There are some more characters, but I can't talk much about them without spoiling stuff. So I'm gonna move on from the characters and instead get to the spoiler part. I will hide it behind a spoiler tag, but if you're on a phone it might not show properly, so don't read the rest if you haven't yet read the book.
Except for that this book was just as good as the first one, and I'm already dying to read the next. I can't wait to find out what will happen with what we found out on the final pages. It's gonna be a hell of a ride, I'm sure of it.
Highlights:
"You are the most important person in my life. Without you, there is no me."
"His smile, as rare as a diamond in the wild and just as valuable to me."
"Assuming should be listed among the top five reasons civilization will one day crumble."
"I might be a dick sometimes, but I'm not a complete asshole. Some things you don't mess around with. Your life is your life. All I see when I look at you is a dude named Tony. End of story."
"Excuse me. I can't help if my default response to everything isn't to commit a felony."
"I'm an acquired taste," Taggard said with a smirk on his face, breaking the tension."
First off ,I'd like to say how excited I was to read more of Taggart. If you've read the first book in the series, we all got a soft spot for him in the first book. You don't have to read book one to enjoy this but you really should as you'll get a background on the recurring characters and some past storylines. You will also witness how far Taggart has come since we first were introduced to him.
That being said , here we are among Taggart and the gang with multiple deaths taking place among them. As eyes are on Taggart, the group is set out to find the truth not only about the deaths , but about some secrets of the past. The story was so intriguing, plenty of mysteries to keep you engaged. I definitely enjoyed reading more of Taggart and the gang and hope to again soon!
Several months have passed since Cassie Underwood and Taggart McGill survived the events of their senior year in high school, and what better way to make a fresh start than by enrolling in a smallish college only a couple hours away from their hometown of New Haven?
Navigating the culture shock of freshman campus life is hard enough, and Cassie is finding her studies all-consuming, leaving her precious little time to spend with Taggart and her bestie, Delta, both of whom followed her lead to Truman College. Initially pleased that Taggart actually came around to the idea of attending college at all, Cassie now worries that he has outgrown her, spending an increasing amount of time with professors and other academics while seemingly overcoming some of the intellectual superiority that had always made him a social pariah in high school.
At least he seems less obsessed with locating the sister he only recently learned existed, and where every single lead has turned into a dead end…
All of that changes when a body is discovered hanging from a rope in the living room of Taggart’s private off-campus apartment. The police are at a loss to explain how the victim happened to be inside a locked unit, and Taggart’s customary demeanor only draws the lead detective’s attention. Taggart isn’t convinced the victim committed suicide, a conclusion that Detective Moss initially finds apparent. But when another hanging body turns up a few days later, the detective learns of a tenuous connection between both victims and Taggart, and he begins to reassess his opinion.
Taggart knows he isn’t responsible for the hangings, and he soon comes to suspect that whoever is behind them might very well be his missing sister. Could she be exacting her revenge for some perceived slight? With no idea what she looks like or what name she could be using, she could very well be hiding in plain sight—across a classroom or at a nearby table in the university food court. With Detective Moss already convinced of Taggart’s complicity, it’s once again up to Cassie, Taggart, and Delta, along with friends both old and new, to get to the bottom of what’s really going on.
Once again, I marvel at Hammons’ ability to convincingly narrate this series from the perspective of its teenaged female lead, Cassie. His new additions to the cast of characters are equally well-drawn and are representative of exactly the sort of kids you would expect to meet in that setting. The ongoing development of Cassie and Taggart’s relationship had just the right amount of angst to be believable as they work together with the willing assistance of their friends to solve yet another case that was beyond the capabilities of the detective officially assigned to it.
Nearly as engaging as Hammons’ stellar debut, the twists and turns kept coming until the very end, with another ‘wait—what?’ moment that once again nicely sets the readers up for a third book in the series.
"I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily." "Jerk" by DL Hammons is a compelling thriller that masterfully intertwines the complexities of family dynamics with the intense atmosphere of a university setting. The novel follows Taggart and Cassie, a couple trying to overcome the shadow of a traumatic summer as they embark on their college journey. However, the tranquility they seek is shattered by a series of sinister events that plunge them into a maelstrom of suspicion and fear.
Taggart, enthralled by the academic challenges at Truman University, faces a stark contrast with Cassie, who struggles with the transition and fears losing her boyfriend to the allure of his new life. Hammons does an excellent job of depicting the strain on their relationship, painting a vivid picture of how college can be a transformative yet isolating experience.
The plot takes a dark turn when a body is discovered hanging in Taggart's apartment, initially ruled as a suicide. The story rapidly intensifies as Taggart becomes the prime suspect, with evidence suggesting the victim plagiarized his work. Hammons skillfully builds suspense as another body is found, escalating the tension and suspicion surrounding Taggart. The campus lockdown following a third suicide only adds to the claustrophobic atmosphere, heightening the sense of paranoia and fear.
Hammons excels in creating a gripping narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The investigation into the deaths is meticulously detailed, and the characters' reactions are realistic and relatable. The portrayal of the university as a breeding ground for both intellectual growth and dark, hidden dangers adds depth to the story, making the setting almost a character in its own right.
The novel raises pertinent questions about mental health, academic pressure, and the impact of traumatic experiences. As Taggart and Cassie navigate this treacherous terrain, their resilience and determination to uncover the truth become the driving force of the story. The reader is constantly kept guessing about the true nature of the deaths—are they part of a larger issue at Truman, or is there a more insidious force at play?
"Jerk" is a thought-provoking and thrilling read that combines elements of mystery, psychological drama, and suspense. DL Hammons has crafted a story that is both emotionally resonant and relentlessly gripping, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. The novel's ability to delve into the complexities of human relationships while maintaining a taut, fast-paced plot is a testament to Hammons' storytelling prowess.
To start I’d like to thank the author & publisher as well as BookSirens for an ARC of this book.
HOLY COW. I was not expecting this book to be my next 5 star read but I think I might just have to tell EVERYONE I know that they should read it.
Big trigger warning for depictions & talk of suicide as well as mentions of sexual assault. If you’re sensitive to mentions of suicide in any way this book is NOT for you. Please keep yourself safe 💕
To start, I find it very interesting how this book opened. I was wildly curious to how the prologue was going to tie into the rest of the story, and it was so beautifully developed. It almost created a sort of running lifeline to all the drama and let the reader in on a secret the characters didn’t quite yet know.
I love that this was told in Cassie’s POV, even though the story is more centered on Taggarts life. I think there is something so unique about this, and it gave an interesting perspective on each event.
There were a lot of moving characters in this book but I never once felt as if I didn’t know them. They were all beautifully developed and as the book went on I grew to love each and every one of them (well yunno, expect for the bad guys).
******SPOILERS AHEAD******
I also greatly appreciate the diverse representation in this book. Having a character being revealed to be transgender and having it be discussed in a positive way was an incredible side plot. Additionally, mental health representation was wildly important. While it is revealed that these deaths were not in fact suicide, it still touches on the subject in an important way. There is a lot of talk of being there for others, finding the help you need, and not staying silent throughout the entire book which is wildly important. I also love how Eve’s attempt intertwines into this plot line of mental health, and the overall strength she possess throughout the book.
Overall, this story was FULL of twists and turns around every corner and had me not wanting to put it down (it’s another one that I read at the cash register at work because it was simply that good). I can’t wait to read the next Taggart mystery and I WILL be going back to read the first book!
I got this novel given by BookSirens in exchange for a review, so here is my honest review of this book.
I was very excited when I chose the book at the beginning of the month because I am a very big fan of mysteries and because this book also talks about suicide, I was very interested to see how the book approached this kind of topic. After starting it, the novel did not hook me as I thought and the story was not as interesting as I was expecting which made me have to push myself to finish the book because I wouldn't say I like to dnf books.
The story is not that bad, but it is the characters and the writing style that I don't like. The suspense is very well done and I have to say that even though I did not really like it, it gave me a very good idea for a novel that I am working on which is nice as well. The other thing I enjoyed was the representation of lgbtq+ community that the book has, as someone from the community this representation in a book like this, is something I always appreciate.
The story is about the lives of Cassie and her friends who are high schoolers and when someone dies from their surroundings they become intrigued cause they do not know if they are involved or not. This death is supposed to be suicide and throughout the book you figure if it really was or if it was something else.
Before reading the book everyone should look for tw due to the fact there are many and people cannot be comfortable reading about them such us suicide, murder, or sexual abuse.
I read this book as an ARC from BookSirens. My thanks to the team of BookSirens, the publisher and the author for the book. This review is based on my reading this book and is my honest, unbiased feedback based on my experience while reading the story.
This is my second book from the author and have taken a liking to his writing style. Thrillers happen to be my favorite genre and this story which is the second book in the series is a worthy follow-up. This story has overtones and occasional flashbacks about the previous story but can be read as a standalone.
The cast led by Taggert and Cassie, as the protagonists are very interesting especially Taggert. This story finds them in college trying to get over their former life with the back story looming disturbingly in the distant horizon at all times. The past seems always catching up with our protagonists and a seeming suicide draws Cassie and Taggert alone with it happening in Taggert's apartment. From this point on the story moves and weaves with enough suspense to hold interest till the end. Several layers of emotional trauma are depicted in the story and the raw emotions may occasionally overwhelm the reader and drawing them into the story right beside the characters. It is here that Hammons prose shines keeping the reader in tenterhooks and always in a constant fight or flight mode. This is an entertaining story and look forward to more of Hammons' writings. Recommended.
Thanks to D.L. and BookSirens for the eARC of this book! JERK is out on May 21!
Trying to leave a tumultuous summer behind, Cassie and Taggart are happily together and off to university. After a string of supposed suicides start popping up around campus, questions start to arise about a concerning "suicide cluster," and Taggart becomes the prime suspect. Can the two of them, along with the friends, clear Taggart's name and solve the murders before one of them is next?
After finishing PRICK, I was excited to see how Cassie and Taggart's story continued as they moved to university. Taggart is such an unique character and I love watching him evolve and grow through PRICK and JERK. And I love how Cassie and his relationship has evolved over time, with both of them learning so much from each other on how to navigate life together.
The plot of this story was a WILD ride. While some of the plot twists were predictable, some of them really came out of left field and there was never a world where I saw it coming. D.L. really knows how to keep readers on their toes that's for sure! I really enjoyed how no character in the main cast was insignificant, everyone really played a role in the story. And LOVED seeing Chewy and Tunes again!! And that cliffhanger?!?!?! I NEED the next book!! Another great read by D.L.! Would highly recommend if you want a YA mystery/thriller.
Cassie and Taggart are adapting to college life. Taggart is thriving, associating more with his professors, branching out and spending time with Cassie's orientation group. Meanwhile, Cassie is struggling with her studies, and worried that Taggart is out growing her, seeming unbothered when they spend days apart.
When they find a body hanging in Taggart's apartment, Jim, the leader of Cassie's orientation group, Taggart isn't quick to believe that its the suicide it appears to be. When this event triggers more suicides, he's even more sure that someone is responsible. Someone that seems to be targeting their group.
Along the way, we find out more about Taggart's sister. The understanding and approach to mental health disorders and suicide clusters was wonderfully done.
While the start was a bit slow, focusing more on their college life (and a possible rift between our two!) I was quickly drawn in, and so thrilled to have another Taggart McGill mystery.
We're left with a teaser ending, when another lost family member reaches out to Taggart, which is a perfect leaping point for the next novel. I can't wait for that one to be here!
I received an ARC through BookSirens, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
Just when I thought this series couldn’t get any better. . .BOOM! D.L. Hammons has done it again with the sequel to the first book in the Taggar McGill series. In most cases when it comes to series, sequels and following books aren’t nearly as great as the first. That is not the case with this one! I don’t know why I’m still surprised that I can never correctly guess the twist. Each story has lead me down a rabbit hole of questions and suspicion as I try to find the suspect, just when I feel like I FINALLY have it all figured out, D.L. Hammons manages to pull the rug from right under me with the plot twist I never see coming! Seeing Cassie, Taggart and the original Scooby gang back together on another goose chase full of deception and lies as they quadruple the amount of criminal activities in order to discover the truth behind “who did it?” Made me truly happy beyond words. I fell in love with these characters in book and book 2 only solidified the wedge these kids have on my heart. The “breadcrumbs” in the epilogue are absolutely amazing and the perfect way to set the stage for book 3. This is one of my absolute favorite series by one of my favorite authors and I truly cannot wait to read book 3.
I was lucky enough to receive the ARC version of Jerk by D.L. Hammons, and I enjoyed this book overall. Before reading this one, there are a few trigger warnings you may want to consider. This is the second book in the Taggart Mystery series and in my opinion is also a great stand alone book as well. The story follows Cassie and her troubled past boyfriend, Taggart, both attending university along with their friends, as a series of suspected suicides occur across campus, quickly making Taggart the primary suspect. Through much mystery and suspense, the group has to try and clear Taggart’s name before one of them is possibly next. I enjoyed the characters and felt that they were relatable and diverse, and the story felt really complex. I enjoyed trying to piece everything together as I was reading and was pleased with the plot twists towards the end, some of them I never expected. The story is well paced and engaging, making it easy to follow. The author does a good job at bringing awareness to suicide and what to do when one is experiencing such thoughts. I’m excited to check out some of the authors other books. 4/5 ⭐️
In "Prick," we met Cassie, Taggart, and their group of friends who were trying to cope with the mysterious deaths in their small town of New Haven.
In "Jerk," they are back and are now freshmen at Truman College. Of course, death seems to follow them, and they are caught in the middle of an investigation of the campus suicides.
“Jerk” is a thrilling mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. The discovery of bodies and secrets, creates an intense atmosphere that will keep you turning the pages, way late into the night.
Taggart and Cassie are well-developed characters with relatable young adult struggles. Their evolving relationship and personal challenges add depth to the story.
DL Hammons skillfully adds twists and turns throughout the story. Every time I thought I figured it out, another surprise awaited me.
If you’re intrigued by mysteries and suspense, “Jerk” is a gripping read that keeps readers hooked from start to finish.
DL Hammons has a knack for storytelling, and his unique voice shines through in his novels.
This book is part of the Taggart McGill Mystery series but can be a stand alone book. The story is about a group of college friends who are enjoying college life when all of a sudden a suicide happens on campus. Taggart and his girlfriend think something is off about this and let their friends know what they are thinking. They all continue with their lives when more suicides happen and they believe something is just not right. They start investigating and the story just unfolds. This book had so many twists and the ending I did not see coming!
I love Taggart! His personality and quarks are different than any other character I've read about! I love all his friends in this book too! How they all work together to figure out what is going on! Crazy good! The story and characters are so well written that I am pulled in immediately! I haven't solved the mystery correctly in either book so it really keeps my on my toes! This is a must read!! So good!! This is the second book in the series but can totally be read as a standalone. Such a great book!
I was a big fan of DL Hammons first book Prick, so it was only natural for me to read the sequel. Although I didn't like this one quite as much as the first one it was an extremely fun and fast read so there's no way that I could give it any less than a 5 star rating. The story is full of plot twists that keep you guessing right up to the very end. As a mystery/suspense writer myself, I'm always trying to figure out who did it but for the 2nd time Hammons got me and took me by surprise with the ending. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
Just when you think you have one of D.L. ‘S books figured out here comes another twist. I absolutely loved this book just as much as I love the last one. It was so cool to see the evolution of all the characters from high school to college and how they still remain friends and it was so much fun following taggart, Delta, Cassie, and all the crew on new adventures and new mysteries and playing amateur sleuth detective with them. if you have not read the DL Hammond book yet, what are you waiting for it go read them right now.
PHENOMENAL!!! Once again, I am absolutely captivated by D.L. Hammons’ creation, particularly the character Taggart. His slightly serious, witty, and dry sense of humor is a true delight. The author excelled in character development, making it easy for readers to visualize each character and become deeply invested in their journeys. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, wanting more!
I highly recommend JERK! It is a great follow-up to PRICK.
The story has great depth with some great twists. There are some awesome characters that push the main characters to their limits in finding out who’s stalking the once budding friends from high school. What’s up with Taggart and Trina not kissing if they are boyfriend and girlfriend. I’m confused. Jon, is a sneaky one. The story is a fast moving one. All the working parts are there, but to me the story was very in-depth with information not in relation to the crime.
3.5 stars Good follow up to Prick. Follows Cassie and Taggart to college. Many of previous characters from high school also included. The mystery of Taggarts sister revealed. Rash of suicides, texts pointing to the unknown sister of Taggart. But the friends work together to sort out the truth. Suicides or murders and why. There are a few places where the names Evelyn and Lisa French are interchanged.
Jerk is the second book in D.L. Hammons’s intriguing YA mystery series. The story follows Taggart, Cassie, and friends as they navigate college and encounter a series of mysterious suicides. Taggart and his friends believe there is more to the incidents than meets the eye. Jerk is a captivating story that kept me guessing! I am eagerly, almost impatiently, anticipating book three. I can’t wait to uncover the thrilling adventures that await Taggart and his friends in the next installment.
Cassie Underwood, Taggart McGrill and Delta her friends in college are all shocked by the death that grip their group. Taggart becomes the main suspect according to detective Moss. Cassie is determined with the help of Taggart to find the truth. A intriguing read with a nail-biting finish. I received this ARC copy via booksirans and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
I love reading and following the same characters as previous books, and this did not disappoint. It kept me in suspense with all of the mysterious happenings to Taggart, Cassie and others during their university stay. I couldn't wait to see what happens next! Was it suicide, or murder? Lots of twists!
This book immediately had me hooked and wanting to know what's happening! Im not even a huge thriller fan and I loved this. The mystery, suspense, and pacing was really well done. The best part is that it can be completely read as a standalone. Although, it does end on a cliffhanger making you want to read the next book! Happy reading!
