Three friends, each named David, are on a return trip from the West Coast when their train is derailed in the middle of America. The accident creates a separation in which one of the friends must stay behind to nurse his wounds, while the other two, unharmed by the crash, go their separate ways. One returns to his grandmother’s home in the city and grapples with a corporate existence. The other returns to Bohemian life in his former college town. When the third is released from his midwestern hospital, he has bizarre dreams and his search for the other two begins.
