Writing this review is difficult. While I found elements in this book that I loved, I also felt that there were areas that could have been improved to enhance the overall narrative. For me, the style didn’t work. Emotions drove the story, but these emotions felt told with an addition of many, many adverbs. That’s probably why I couldn’t connect with Alex. That being said, the story's premise was captivating, and the themes of love and forgiveness added depth and enjoyment to the narrative. I really liked these parts and I think they are worth recommending. Overall, I believe it’s a good story - captivating, unique, and with a profound message woven into its challenging and horrific circumstances.
I really enjoyed this book. The story of Alexandra's journey outside of the Establishment left me always wanting to know what was going to happen next. There were so many unexpected twists and turns, and the author did not hold back on some pretty heavy themes (which I really appreciated). To be honest, this book was on of the best treatments on the topics of grace and forgiveness I have ever read in a fiction novel. She didn't hold anything back and there were times I felt myself being challenged on what it really means to truly forgive. I cannot wait to read more about Alexandra, Marek, and so many of the other characters in the sequel(s) to come!
