He slides his thumb all over my face again, the darkness shifting, morphing, and simmering on the surface.
I watch it with keen interest.
Just like the other time, it seems that whenever he punishes me, something inside him claws to the surface.
Fighting.
Biting.
Hitting.
It’s like he’s…warring for control. But against whom? And for what?
As if validating my thoughts, he shoves his hand in his pocket and steps back.
He’s leaving.
Again.
I can’t help feeling the tinge of emptiness at the dysfunctionality of it all.
But I won’t have him throw me away like this. I wanted the way out he offered, but he didn’t let me take it.
The least he can do is treat me like I matter.
“I have little faith in his world. Our world. Women are just a flashy accessory and a currency for the highest bidder. I’m aware that I’m expected to strengthen the Bratva’s alliances with anyone they deem worthy.”
Yes, I continue to treat people nicely, remember their names and ask about their last social media post, but it’s all part of a feigned behavior. Whatever drew me to them in the first place has long since shriveled and died.

Due to the fact that I only speak when it’s absolutely necessary and after I allow my brain to mull over my words, I notice things. Patterns, lingering gazes, and unresolved obsessions.
Cecily is one of the purest souls to ever exist with enough heart to fit the globe.
I swear on Tchaikovsky’s grave.
My vision reddens, then gradually blackens as my limbs soak in the hot crimson liquid.
A low, haunting moan of pain saturates my ears and clashes against my bones.
I’m frozen, bound, helpless, and trapped in the middle of an intricate web.
There’s darkness, though, the slow, simmering type that could and would transform into a hurricane.
That look in his eyes is downright demented.
“I am sick. You should’ve stayed away while you had the chance.”
The thought of something happening to her turns me into a feral beast.
I have a feeling that I can pull out the darkness lurking beneath the surface if I dig deeper and tug harder.
Nikolai has a serious thirst for blood and violence.
“Part of my devil’s taste is that I can only feel pleasure if I inflict pain.”
Something tells me I poked the monster in his cave and he might come after me.
“When did you become this soaking wet, hmm? Was it before or after I spanked your little arse? Maybe during? Did you get turned on by the thought of being owned by me? Did you picture my cock tearing through your cunt until you screamed and choked on my name?”
Who thought the quiet Creighton had such a dirty mouth? It’s almost like I’m meeting another version of him.
Pain explodes in my chest and a smile curves my lips as I sway and fall toward the ground.
She said she didn’t miss and she meant it.
But I don’t hit the ground. Instead, I’m held by Landon.
He stares at me with his soulless eyes and it’s fucking sad that he’s the one I see last.
“Creigh! Can you hear me?”
I grab him by the collar and use the last breaths in my lungs to choke out, “T-tell…Mum and…Dad…t-that I-I’m sorry…”
The last sight I catch is blurred blue-gray eyes and the last thing I hear is my custom-made Grim Reaper calling my name.
But I’m already gone.
The rage dulls to nothingness and I close my eyes.
It’s finally…over.
“Because he wanted you to, Anoushka.” Jeremy’s voice softens, and my brother’s voice doesn’t soften. “He looked to be in pain and resolved to see it all…end.”
“No…” I sob, hitting my brother’s chest. “Ah…ah… This…hurts. Why does it hurt? Ah…make it stop hurting. There was a lot of blood, Jer. What if he…? What if… What…”

“My brother remains silent, probably because he doesn’t understand what the fuck I’m talking about, but he’s still there for me, listening and offering a part of himself he never gives anyone.
And I’m grateful for that.”

”So do not, under any circumstances, attempt to make Annika feel bad about choosing herself.”
”Since when do you do that?”
“Since you.”
“You also laughed.”
“I only laugh around you.” I stroke my fingers through her hair, massaging her scalp.
His lips twitch and that’s the nearest thing to a smile he offers, so I snatch it, lock in the corner of my heart with his name all over it, and press my body even closer.
I’m about to barge inside and abort his plan, but I stop when Bran reaches a hesitant hand to Nikolai’s…hair.
He slowly, gently slides it back, revealing his unconscious face. A groan spills out of Nikolai’s lips and Brandon jerkily releases him. His hand finds the back of his neck and he pulls on the short hairs there.
Nikolai’s eyes blink open, his pupils dilated, and he appears to be as high as a kite.
“Lotus flower…?”

“You’re the only one I want. Everyone else is just white noise.”

"Dance with me"
"But you don't dance"
"I do with you"
"I don't like the rain"
"You do for me"
“Aiden King is everything his last name exemplifies. a monarch with a ruthless iron grip, the media's notorious devil”
"And Uncle Aiden is, like, the most ruthless person I know, no kidding."

✧ Landon kidnapping jeremy.
✧ Remi saying if eli heard about his brother getting beat up then he’ll burn the mansion with the heathens in it.
✧ Creigh telling jeremy he’ll kill the volkovs.
✧ Aiden threatening adrian and telling him he’ll end him. while also having the audacity to say:
"Go ahead, shoot This is the only chance you'll have to get me in a position like this. Use it well."
I'm flung back and slapped across the face so hard that my vision burns. “I swear to fuck, Annika, if something happens to Creigh, I'm gonna fly to the States and personally kill you."
"And you're scared she'll choose them like she chose her brother?" Mum as in a soft voice. At my nod, she strokes my cheek. "If that's the choice she makes, then she doesn't deserve you, baby."
"Like the way you protected your younger brother? All I hear are excuses." I tower over him
"Admit that the situation got out of your control."
“Eli and I share the richest yet most complicated relationship any father and son could have. Ever since he realized what a challenge is and that I'm the best opponent he can have, he's been actively trying to get on my nerves.”
"And what's so important about your brother? Does his life have more value than my son's?"
Papa slides his attention to her and all I can do is watch as a different, emotion blossoms in his eyes. I've always loved the way he looks at her, like she's his world. How he searches for her when she's not there. It's like she's his air and he has to see her every moment.
