I've always been fascinated by Vikings and eager to learn more about them and the book Vikings in England is fantastic because it contains loads of information that you wouldn't find in other Viking books or Viking museums. We learn about Vikings raiding England and leaving quickly with their booty, to an invasion with the ultimate of the domination of England, to Vikings and their families settling into England, their interactions with the Anglo-Saxons, as well as Viking influence on England. A must read!
Informative in the details of the formation of the English land and people
While the book presents most facts objectively, there are occasions that some "facts" tat more into a realm of author preference and many cost the reader a bit of surety in what he's reading. The evolution of the culture that became English is interesting and worthwhile to read to get an impression of why England is he why it is today.
There were different voyages by the Vikings. Some were the ruthless plunderers that are commonly thought of, but not all were. This was the view seen and written by the monks of England, but some Vikings wanted to be like the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who preceded them, also for the northeasyern continental regions. These Vikings established the Daneslaw nation. This broaderview shows that the Vikings were more an extension, than a terrible disruption.
4.5 Stars A solid introduction to the Vikings and their Influences on English history, this work is fascinating and a great choice for beginners or students.
