A Tsundere Love Story!

Chloe is an alchemist of (self-proclaimed) rare beauty. She used to be the esteemed daughter of a duke, but three years ago her engagement was suddenly annulled and she was stripped of her title and privileges! With nowhere else to go, she became an alchemist’s apprentice until she was rich enough to have her own alchemy shop in the royal capital! Now a penny-pincher, Chloe goes out of her way to purchase Julius, the former general of an enemy kingdom dubbed the Black Prince for his cruel nature and cold-heartedness! She purchased him to be her bodyguard so she can more efficiently gather materials for alchemy, but his personality is just awful! And yet, Chloe finds herself slowly drawn to Julius despite his incessant teasing...

What kind of love will bloom between this gorgeous alchemist and her snarky, tsundere general?!

Attack of the dreaded Book Slump. I’m just plowing through books to get them off of my Mt. TBR and off of my “currently reading” list. This one has fallen victim to the Book Slump.

Not in a slump? Would have really enjoyed this. As it is now? I won’t ignore the second volume, but I may need to re-visit this one at a later date to do it justice.

I have to say, this is more violent and “actions have consequences” than many light novels I have read.

Trigger warning, there is an attempted gang rape scene (memory) in this that is somewhat shown, so if that is something that upsets you, you might want to skip this or the scene.

On a positive note, I did love the dragon Helios. So that was fun.

3, it’s me and this darn Book Slump not the book, stars.

This really could have used a second volume, not because there was too much plot for one, but because the romance felt a little too surface-level. But I enjoyed Chloe as a heroine (and her many coping mechanisms; poor girl is like a more emotionally healthy Violette from I Swear I Won't Bother You Again), and should a second volume appear, I'd be happy to read it.

😇💛💚💙💜😇

OMMFG what an amazing story!! I love our kind alchemists, reliable yet cold general, and the adorable Helios. Please continue their story because it hooked me from the start. I am so glad with how the story ended and the truths that came out. Praying for more of their adventures.

Akhirnya selesai 😂
Lama bgt bacanya karena tbh agak ngebosenin, baru seru nya di akhir2 cerita.
Ttg Chloe Sagrid, anak bangsawan wilayah Astria yg dibuang keluarganya stlh divonis melakukan tindakan kriminal.

Kalo buat cerita sih so-so ya.

~3.5 rounded up

This book is like an onion. At first glance, it seems dry and boring but as you read on and peel off the layers, the juicier and more interesting it gets. When you cut it right to the core, its a little messy at the edges but its a story that does bring tears to your eyes.

The byplay between the two protagonists is a little off-putting at first. Julian seems incredible rude and Chloe has all the makings of a typical doormat. But as you read on, you really sympathize with them and realize they're not just one dimensional characters. There are some rushed loopholes in the story plot but overall it was a good read.

It suffers from the same poor writing as so many light novels. The style is so clumsy, and the dialogue comes off as stilted. You really wonder if everyone is morons when you discover how her father was accused and executed, his house burnt down, land seized, and all the people hated her at first for being part of his family… But there was no evidence. And if he was hurting anyone, who are they? If it was just a corrupt political move, it would at least make sense, but the commoners being angry at him for these made up crimes was too much.

When you discover the reason behind everything, it’s…so stupid. And Chloe is far too nice in a dumb way. I can’t even.

what a fun read

I bought it because I thought it might be cute… But what a great read. I was not expecting that. I’d like to read more about these characters. I hope that there will be a sequel. I like that the author went through and explained both characters, perspectives, and what was going on in their heads. From her perspective, he came off his very arrogant. But once you read it from his perspective, it made perfect sense.

Light novel fantasy with a dark prince of the enemy kingdom turned slave turned lover. I liked the plot but some of it got repetitive. This could be because the writing style or language may have gotten lost in translation... but it was an amiable light novel regardless. I think this is fitting for young YA (middle school) ages and up. The dynamic between the MCs were pretty cute and innocent; and they even have a pet dragon. :)

This was an interesting read. I love the kind, competent female alchemist, Chloe. She buys a slave, Julius, to help her defeat monsters for alchemy ingredients. He comes off as cold but he views her as his saviour. The novel was short and I feel that another volume would have been nice to develop their relationship more.

I adore the dragon Helios.

Cute story. It took a while to get going and the narrative was very repetitive, especially the descriptions, but in the end, it was enjoyable. It’s conclusive enough that the reader is satisfied, but I wouldn’t mind reading more.

Loved it!

I almost didn't persist through the detailed story exchange in the beginning, but something about the way the characters interacted intrigued me, and I'm so glad I kept reading! Love the characters, love the story, love the hint of mysteries yet to be solved!

This book truly suffered from a poor translation. It was honestly pretty good outside of that, minus some plot devices I don’t adore but I think they speak for themselves. Definitely similar vibes to Sugar Apple Fairy Tale.

I really liked the premise of this book. I liked the characters. I even liked the twists it decided to take. But, it felt very immaturely written at times, and by the time I got to the end I was skimming through it because the prose just wasn't working for me.

A story where the world building is much more interesting than the characters themselves.

A lot of inconsistencies with the main character regarding her sister and stuff that happens within the book.

Fun but not worthy of reading again. I’ll probably skim through volume two to see the outcome of the gates, it I won’t be too sad if I don’t read it.

(Third time reading this book, third time editing my review.)

The dialogue in this book is really clunky and awkward, but I love it in spite of this. Chloe is an awkward silly character but I love how upbeat she is, in spite of having every reason to be cynical and bitter. Julias is pretty mean to Chloe, especially at first, but considering that he's basically been treated like a war beast for a very large chunk of his life, it's understandable that he'd have things personality-wise he needs to... iron out. I really love how the leads both learn to actually talk to each other and work out their issues like adults without too much dragging out of drama.

The way the world is described is pretty interesting too. The way the monsters and the magic system work feels like a video game but without tedious things that usually go with it like meta dialog boxes that announce level ups and stuff. The main reason for my current re-read was going through and marking down descriptions of everything
