Really engaging story and i didn't want to put the book down. didn't expect anything less from Sabrina Jeffries (just found out that deborah martin is another of her pen names so i'm hunting them down)
After their mother dies, elina (our illustrious heroine) and her brother alex set out to find their father whom they haven't heard from in over 3 months while he was away on a business trip. alex is a bad gambler (total addict and a cheater to boot) and has gotten in over his head with the local loan sharks who burn down their family farm forcing elina to travel with him to New Orleans under different names to try and find their father to notify him of their mother's death.
on the paddlesteamer Alex proves once again that he is TSTL and cheats the wrong person forcing Elina to club the hero, rene, over the head to make their escape. once in New Orleans Alex sets out with their birth certificates to find their father and ends up dead the birth certificates are nowhere to be seen and Rene cops the blame, in a we're pretty sure you did it but we don't care enough to pursue it because you have money and are powerful kind of way, because he was the one to find the body. of course he doesn't believe that elina is who she says she is and the proof has been taken by her brother's murderer....
here's why the book lost a star... heroine didn't hold a a grudge against the hero. A guy who point blank refused to believe her, held her hostage, yet bedded her (with his romancelandia i have a magic penis and can have you flat on your back with one simple touch despite the fact that i've done and said horrible things supernatural powers) and tried really hard to make her his mistress. All it too was the hero to say 'i believe you' for her to jump into marriage with him. she also forgave the hero's sister far too easliy when she was the direct cause of her falling so low. Her one saving grace was that she had enough pride to say 'no' every time he tried to get her to agree to being his mistress.
Another star was lost for the random incest scene at the end ... just EW! there was really no need for it and if your going to include such nasties at least explain the reasoning behind the couple's incestuous relationship (ie was the sister forced, or that they really are just trash)... also the hero uses it as blackmail. 'i'll tell her fiancee if you don't tell me what i need to know' (this is supposed to be one of his good friends) um... tell him anyway!
