This was not at all what I expected or wanted. I wanted the story of land seizure, dam construction, and forced relocation. That story is here, but it's largely contained within less than 75 pages (most in two chapters). The rest of this very dense and academic book concerns the history and culture of the three tribes, native outlooks on land ownership and citizenship, reservation formation, US Indian policy, native activism, etc., etc., etc. All interesting, but that material is literally more than half the book. Pick-Sloan isn't even mentioned until the halfway point. I skimmed a lot.
Also, the author is a history professor, and the book has a very dry, academic style and tone (part of the reason I was skimming). Despite being only 212 pages, this is not a fast read. It's not a bad book, just not at all what I had hoped for. I suppose academics and others who want that dense background may rate this higher.
