Detective Erin O’Reilly is no stranger to close calls. She and her K-9 Rolf have dodged more than their share of blades, blasts, and bullets as they’ve taken on the worst New York City has to offer. But the last perp came a little too close, leaving one of Erin’s fellow officers with a bullet-hole in his head and her own brain scrambled.
Erin needs a break, but as her long-running infiltration of the O’Malley gang enters its final act, she can’t afford to slack off. And that’s not her only headache. When a former convict turned pizza deliveryman has his skull crushed in a college parking garage, an apparent mugging may be something much more sinister. Banging her head against one problem after another, Erin faces obstacles both on the street and in herself. She’ll have to break through to the answers before her own brain lets her down.
Steven Henry is the USA Today bestselling author of the Erin O’Reilly mysteries and the Clarion Chronicles.
Steven learned how to read almost before he learned how to walk. Ever since he began reading stories, he wanted to put his own on the page. He lives a very quiet and ordinary life in Minnesota with his wife and dog.
"Brain Damage" is Book 24 of the Erin O'Reilly Mysteries, written by Steven Henry. This is by far my favorite series to read. This book is a continuation of Book 23, where Phil Stachowski, Erin's liaison on the upcoming takedown of the O'Malley Irish Mob Family, was shot in the head by dirty cops, and now lies in the hospital alive, but barely able to walk or talk, his motor skills considerably damaged. Erin also suffered a bullet to the head, and while it wasn't as critical as Stachowski's, has left her somewhat impaired. She was released to return to her job as Major Crimes Detective, but this episode shows her suffering from that head injury, even to the point of blacking out while driving to an investigative meeting with Lt. Webb, her boss. As always, Erin's K9 partner, Rolf, is my favorite character, with Erin and Carlyle being a close second. This episode has more than one storyline going on, but two of them are related: the two related ones are the murder of a pizza delivery guy and the hacking into a computer system's virus program in order to steal literally millions of dollars from a Russian billionaire businessman. I love all the action that Steven Henry writes, the tender love between Erin and Carlyle, the love story between Vic Neshenko and his pregnant girlfriend Zofia who is also a cop, and the personality profile given to each character, whether a good guy or bad guy, and especially K9 Rolf's spectacular personality. I gave this book a 5 star rating just like I have given to each book in this series, and am looking forward to Book 25 when it comes out in September 2024.
This book deals with the aftermath of Erin getting shot in the head during Frostbite. Once again I am glad that Henry does take note of the fact that Erin is not ok after getting shot and is dealing with the complications of that. It helps make his characters more rounded. If the author is going to have them get injured then they need to act like they have been injured. Phil is also dealing with the aftermath, and I felt so bad for him even though he is surprisingly upbeat about it. It also feels like he will at least have a camo in the next book (Erin promises to let him know when everything ends) so he will be around for one more book. Holiday made me kind of mad this book for the first time (when he tells Erin Rolf is a tool with the NYPD and that really didn't sit well with me) but otherwise he continues to be a good mentor for Erin. Webb is as well and I really like this fatherly persona he has shown towards Erin which I think is really sweet. The Author's Note at the end was telling (he doesn't put these out often, but when he does it is meant to draw attention to an important and bigger issue) and Erin and Carnes in some ways mirror his own personal experience from his car accident. He didn't have to tell that story but he did to draw awareness to people suffering from TBIs which was thoughtful. Also glad he is ok afterwards. I look forward to the next book in the series.
