The only complaint I have about this book is that I want more!

The collection is such a delight and I am so excited to visit any place described here. The information given about each place is enough to make you want to be there in a jiffy and enjoy the interesting food and culture there!

The illustrations are amazing!

You will enjoy this book more if you are actually planning a trip soon!

Thank you, White Lion Publishing, for the advance reading copy.

Why there is no Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand? This three country are also rich with food and cultures if writers discovered them. To understand another person we should, they say, walk a mile in their shoes. Food is the great universal. We are, every one of us, bonded by this inescapable need for sustenance. This book will you “eat” your way around the world in 25 mouth-watering destinations. Every country have particularly palatable stories to tell. Everywhere has its own uniques flavors. Here is the examples of some country that interested me:

✈️Osaka, Honshu, Japan: the real taste of the city is its fast food. Down neon streets, billboards flash at migraine-inducing levels, each screeching: eat here! Eat here!

🚉Hanoi, Northern Vietnam: slow cooked and subtly spiced, the meaty stock is the bedrock of pho, the nurturing essence that elevates this noodle soups into a dish that powers a whole country on a daily basis.

✈️Udupi, Karnataka, India: food for the Gods, food for the people. Simple, seosonal, nutritious, harmonious, its served to priests and paupers alike. Udupi became one of the most popular cheap-eat choices in the country.

✈️Melbourne, Victoria, Australia: a metropolis of migrants, each adding their own spice to the mix. A otable number of new arrivals were Chinese, so many decide it was more lucrative to set up restaurants serving Cantonese-style dishes. Now, Melbourne is considered the coffee capital of the world

✈️Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy: remind us about Spagheti bolognese? The globally ubiquitos may have taken the name of this fine old city. The bolognese menu is unapologetically meaty, creamy, buttery, oily, indulgent and delicious.

✈️Tel Aviv, Israel- The humble chickpea.

I wasn’t expecting a broad overview of regional food, but that is what this is. The author isn’t going to tell you where in the city to find these dishes. What they will tell you is what city it is in, the history of that city/region, and the most popular dish to try in that city. You will have to find the actual restaurant yourself.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Love this one. Perhaps my favorite in the series. Reminds me of a shorter version of Gastro Obscura.

I just reviewed the arc of Foodie Places by Sarah Baxter. #FoodiePlaces #NetGalley

FoodiePlaces presents itself as a visually stunning journey for culinary enthusiasts seeking to delve into the rich cultural tapestry behind the world's finest cuisines. Sarah Baxter, a seasoned travel journalist, takes readers on a delectable tour of 25 food capitals, ranging from iconic culinary hubs to lesser-known gems, each brimming with its own gastronomic delights. The hand-illustrated pages exude the essence and vibrancy of each locale, enticing readers to embark on a sensory adventure.

The book's premise underscores the profound connection between a region's food and its historical and cultural identity. Indeed, as the saying goes, "food is a universal language," and FoodiePlaces effectively captures the essence of this sentiment, showcasing how culinary traditions serve as a gateway to understanding a place's soul.

While the initial impression of the book is undeniably captivating, with its visually appealing layout and captivating illustrations, it falls short in providing depth and substance beyond surface-level exploration. While the overview of each city's culinary landscape is engaging, the absence of in-depth analysis or recipes leaves readers yearning for more. Incorporating authentic recipes from each destination would not only enhance the book's value but also provide a tangible connection to the culinary experiences described.

Despite this shortcoming, the descriptive narratives vividly transport readers to each destination, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the flavors and aromas that define these food capitals. The synergy between Baxter's insightful commentary and the enchanting illustrations creates an immersive reading experience, making it easy to envision oneself strolling through bustling markets or savoring exotic dishes in quaint cafes.

In essence, FoodiePlaces succeeds in piquing the reader's curiosity and igniting a sense of wanderlust, yet it falls short of fulfilling its potential as a comprehensive culinary guide. While the book excels in capturing the allure of each destination, it could benefit from a more cohesive vision and additional content to truly solidify its purpose and appeal. Nonetheless, for those seeking a visually captivating glimpse into the world's culinary diversity, FoodiePlaces offers a tantalizing glimpse into the global gastronomic landscape.

Previously this series has given a spread of places that are wonderful to imagine yourself being in, with text and visuals (that are alright, but don't really have either the realism or mood to really place yourself there) for every site. This further volume tries our patience a step too far, perhaps, in that it is about the cuisine of these locations. So we don't get the joy of the travel, we see none of the echt views, and now we can't taste and smell the goods either. Dammit.

Not that I fancy the goat heads and couscous of Marrakesh, but you get what I mean. Nor the Sichuan goose guts or Basque hakes' jaw – what is it with this book and the more extreme options?! (Perhaps it's a throw-back to evidence in volumes past that the author certainly hasn't visited all the places – here you very much doubt she's guzzled all the gizzards.)

Make no mistake about it, this is focused on the food almost more than the places. We do divert to walk around Jeonju, but it's the bibimbap we're here for, and that comes to our eyes first. The same applies for the old-school Hanoi pho – we seldom see above the bowl's rim to check the city out. But this isn't exclusively looking at a place where one and only one top-notch eating experience is to be had – we visit the real melting pot of Melbourne, and Lyon is here more for the style of eating venue than any specific dish. You can't pin New Orleans down as the provider of just one delicacy.

This is pretty review-proof, being a book that is somewhat akin to an airline magazine article, but obviously stretched and improved in quality. Two dozen sites are our focus, our mind is boggled by the Montreal-only bagel, the inedible of Noma (closing within months of me writing this), and the juxtaposition of that place and Whitstable. And so you alone know whether you will appreciate this light guide (well, it's calorie-free, at least) or whether the fact you just can't experience it fully is an annoyance. This is ideal for some, trivia for others. I liked it, as the rest of the series, as a guide to a non-existent wish-list, and it certainly is harmless browsing entertainment. Unless you're one of Noma's shrimp or ants served alive, that is.

Book Review: "Foodie Places" by Sarah Baxter, Illustrated by Amy Grimes

Sarah Baxter, a seasoned travel journalist, takes readers on a delightful exploration of 25 food capitals, each offering a unique and mouth watering experience.

The book beautifully intertwines the cultural heritage and history behind the world's best cuisines, making it a truly immersive read. Amy Grimes' stunning illustrations bring each destination to life, adding a vibrant and captivating visual element to the narrative.

One of the standout features of "Foodie Places" is the wealth of information provided about each location, including insights into the local culture, popular dishes, and must-visit culinary hotspots. The brief "Where?, Why?" sections before each entry offer a sneak peek into what makes each place a gastronomic paradise.

Personally, I found the cover of the book to be incredibly inviting, setting the tone for the culinary adventure that awaited within its pages. The colorful and lively illustrations further enhanced the reading experience, making it both informative and visually appealing.

I love food, and I love travel, so I figured this book would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, my expectations for this book were off the mark, and that meant that this ended up not really being a fit for me. This book is a collection of brief articles detailing some history and food culture of 25 different cities around the globe. Amy Grimes accompanies these articles with vibrant illustrations, almost always of scenery and people and every once in a while of some sort of vague food item. The illustrations are wonderful (if perhaps lacking in food), and the information about each region was interesting if somewhat over-written (I felt the prose bordered on purple at times). What this book does not have: restaurant recommendations, photos, or in-depth descriptions of dishes. I also found the location choices a little curious, but obviously if you're only highlighting 25 cities, you're going to have to pick and choose. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, White Lion Publishing for a digital review copy.

Are you ready to travel to 25 different food capitals from across the globe within the comforts of your own seat? Look no further, Sarah Baxter’s newest food and traveller’s guide offers a rich insight into the cultural heritage behind each locale and dish. Nothing tells the story of a place so profoundly than the food it serves.

As a foodie enthusiast and traveler at heart, this guide offered a wide-range of locations high up on my bucket list of places to wander and foods to try. I appreciate the informative and extensive history paired with delightful illustrations throughout the pages. It featured two of my favorites cuisines: Cajun and Asian. But it has also drawn me to such places like Montreal, Israel, Denmark, and many more. This book is a haven for food travelers and its pilgrimage-worthy descriptions do capture some of the best eats and is a great source for further research!

Thanks kindly to NetGalley and White Lion Publishing for the ARC.

Foodie Places is a welcome addition to the Inspired Traveler's Guides series, and is simply gorgeous.

It delivers a rich and compelling illustrated journey to 25 food destinations across the globe, each accompanied by a written historical and cultural snapshot. Baxter's designs feel so alive and playful, and the language used is reminiscent of a profile piece. It would have been made even better with the inclusion of an anecdote from either the author or someone else for each dish featured for a more personal flair, even if just a few sentences long.

This book can't bring you to all or each person's special favourite foodie destination, but its certainly a decent selection and an interesting primer to learn more.

I am so impressed with the wide-ranging locations of the foodie places that are included in this book. Visit 25 spots; go everywhere from Europe to the Middle East to North America to Asia. I want to pack my suitcase and go to some of these locations.

Everyone will find favorites here. I was drawn to places like Osaka, Oostduinkerke (West Flanders, Belgium), Montreal and Melbourne.

This title has inviting text; readers will get a genuine sense of each location. In addition, the book has beautiful illustrations.

Foodie Places by Sarah Baxter

A book that will keeps you mouth-watering when reading it!

Great content. It’s such an enjoyable read for me. If you are a traveller and foodie, this is your book. No matter whether you have visited all the places or eaten all the food the author introduced, you will love it. I love how the author connects the food, places, cultural identity and the history together.

Each place just occupies a few pages, then you will travel to another city with another cuisine!

It’s not a history book, not a travel book, not a cook book, but it is all you need if you are a foodie!

Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my copy.

Thank you to the author, White Lion Publishing and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This collection highlighting 25 "food capitals" around the world is visually stunning, with vibrant illustrations - although many if not most of the illustrations have nothing to do with food. As with any type of collection, the selection will not meet everyone's expectations, and I certainly found the book very Euro- and western-centric. I was also hoping for a bit more depth than I got in the texts - for some, I wondered whether the author had actually been to the place she was describing - and I wish there had been a few authentic recipes or at least a bit more in-depth description.

The book is a compilation of articles that uncover the history and culinary customs of 25 cities. I was immersed! I liked how the information is well presented. The artworks that were included are amazing (bro they're picture frame-worthy :D).
Personally, I wish there were more of them though. More illustrations, cities covered, perhaps the author should've inserted some recommendations on where to eat, among others. Would recommend this to my foodie buddies.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for providing me an ARC for this one. :D

Foodie Places is a beautiful peek into some of the most delicious foods around the world. The author not only does an excellent job of describing the dishes but also does a fantastic job of providing the history of the food, the area, and the people. The illustrations throughout the book are absolutely gorgeous. Each page is a piece of art. There are so many foods out there that I can't wait to try and so many places I can't wait to visit. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves food and travel.

Warning: do not read this book on an empty stomach.

This was a fun book highlighting certain cities and regions around the world and some of the more week known or week loved foods.

This isn't a travel itinerary book, you won't find addresses to the best restaurants in town but instead a well written few paragraphs taking about the area and painting a delicious picture of why you should visit.

The illustrations were lovely and it felt more like a wanderlust book than a travel guide. Worth the quick read if only to day dream about these places and foods.

If you love travel, and food and would like to know more about where to eat and what specialty you can get there then this book should be one of those for you to read. I found its greatest charm to be the fact that she does not share photos of the food-to me this leaves you with the anticipation of what you may get.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

Wow, what a beautiful and thoughtful food tour. This was an amazing collection of things we all love - history, food, beauty, heart, and just simply wondrous. I wanted to be there with the author, submerged myself in all the food glory, and just enjoy the cuisines. The illustrations were a feast to the guys while I hunger to taste all the dishes. Simply well done. Loved this.
