I entered the murky world of gambling for this read, specifically in regards of sporting events fixing and found out the shocking cost some characters had to make once they had been convinced to ‘just do this one thing’ to help fix a football match or a leg of a cycling competition…..however as with many things once they had done it they could not then stop…and if they did they faced the wrath of the menacing Mr Smith, the man controlling it all and ultimately them
This is Book 5 in the series and it can be read as a stand alone although I kinda wish I had read the other 4 and the prequel to the series as I felt there was a lot of back story to Luke and other characters I had missed, there were pointers to other stories ( mentions of dating a terrorist for one character etc ) that made me keen to read the other books
It is a character rich book with lots of dialogue and I did get a chance to get to know the characters personalities
The writing was good and the story intriguing and informative and made you wonder just how much this ‘fixing’ does go on and also shows how easy it is to fall into the trap of ‘just this once’ but is actually the start to ruining a life and not only the person who agrees to do it
Lethal Odds is the fifth book, in the popular Luke Sackville series.
Luke is hoping to have a pleasant afternoon, deputising at a corporate event for his incorrigible boss, watching his beloved Bath Rugby play is never a chore. At the event, he is asked to look into an anomaly at one of Filcher’s possible future contracts. The eclectic and entertaining team at Filchers, are dragged into a murky investigation, which lead them to a betting syndicate, where the stakes are extremely high. Pun intended.
As you would expect from the author, SJ Richards, the story is well plotted, with a complex, fast paced case to get your teeth into. The characters are well developed, with the ongoing backstory of the central cast growing nicely. There’s plenty of humour, to balance against the darker elements of the book. I flew through the engaging book very quickly, taking just over 24 hours from cover to cover.
I’m glad to see that Luke still has time to catch up with a favourite book series too, Angus King voicing Hoon’s latest descriptive outburst, never fails to raise a smile.
Luckily for fans of the Luke Sackville series, Sow The Wind, the sixth book, will be published in November. So we don’t have to long to wait, to catch up with their next case, and hopefully the ongoing backstory between two of the central characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lethal Odds. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the series from the first book, Taken to the Hills.
This is the fifth in the Luke Sackville Crime Thrillers Series & they just get better & better. This could be read as a standalone but, as all the books are relatively short, do yourself a favour & start at the beginning.
An interesting premise for this one; gambling & its impact on the individual & their families. I’ve never been a gambler but to read about the devastation it can cause was quite humbling but, of course, this is a work of fiction although undoubtedly elements of truth are hidden within. The Ethics team are engaged in various ‘projects’ which inevitably lead to a twisting conclusion but the paths taken to that end result are very clever.
It was great to be amongst familiar characters, some more prominent than others this time, & the underlying camaraderie & banter is a joy to behold. In any tense situation, humour is required & that is adequately provided by more than one individual. More than ready for book 6. Gucci!
Finished this book in a matter of 1.5days (3 if you count work 😂).
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it again. Luke on the hunt for another killer, who's linked to gambling and investments. Then to have 1 of the team in harm's way yet again, to then have his daughter's safety put at risk.
Highly recommend this series for anyone who wants a thrilling page turner.
Filchers’ Head of Ethics ex-DCI Luke Sackville and his very capable team of graduate trainee Josh and much older legal expert Helen plus technical wizard Majid and accountant Sam are back for a fifth adventure in a series which has become a firm favourite of mine. The story begins with a professional sportsman caught up in a desperate situation whilst Luke is alerted to a situation at Filchers involving possible irregularities in one of their client accounts, an online gambling company. He also gets to watch his former rugby team Bath playing as part of a Filchers meet and greet day where a potential new client asks his advice about an overly successful hedge fund manager. Within 48 hours there have been three deaths and despite his ex-colleague DI Pete Gilmore believing otherwise, Luke is convinced they must be connected, especially as there are links to on-going investigations in his own office. All these strands are skilfully woven together by the author as the whole deadly match fixing scheme starts to become clear. But the big question is who is the mysterious and dangerous Mr Smith and with no clue, will they find him before any more lives are lost? This is a fast paced and cleverly plotted story with multiple interlinked investigations which demonstrate all the team’s excellent abilities. There’s also more about the personal lives of the main characters which both makes the story nicely rounded and provides more links to the main plot, and it was lovely to see a much-needed contribution from budding actress Lily again. Although this book is perfectly enjoyable on its own, I’d definitely recommend reading the whole series in order to see just how much this very engaging cast of characters have grown together as a team. The conversations Luke has with both nemesis Head of Security Glen Baxter and boss Edward Filcher are hilarious and bring some light relief to a chilling story with an exciting and heart stopping conclusion. Once again Luke misses his chance to ask Sam out - will the author ever put us out of our misery and allow them to team up? Kentastic!!
Lethal Odds was my introduction to both S J Richards’ storytelling and the Luke Sackville Crime Thrillers. When I was offered a review copy of the audiobook from the author, I honestly didn’t have any idea what I was getting into by accepting it. Well, sure Lethal Odds is book five in the series and having never read or listened to the four previous stories I felt a bit like a fish out of water for a couple of chapters. But about three chapters into the story I was deeply ensconced in the story and began to get a feeling for each of the characters and their strengths as well as possible weaknesses.
I really enjoyed the story because along with being an action-packed who-dun-it, the story is multifaceted, so it forces the reader to think about the events and who is driving everything. Honestly, I had no idea who Mr. Smith was until he was exposed in the story, infect I couldn’t even reliably predict his identity.
Another introduction was the narrator, Samuel James. Samuel does an excellent job bringing the story to life and gives voice to each of the characters to the point I knew each of them by voice as they spoke.
Would I suggest you duplicate my hopping into the series at the fifth book, maybe not unless you can set aside the obvious lack of background on the characters. If you can just accept, they have existed for some time and have history with each other this book works as a stand-alone story. Of course, it also created a desire for me to go back and experience the first four books.
Book 5 of the Luke Sackville series which just gets better and better. Please read the previous books! Ex DCI Luke and now Head of Ethics at Filchers, a business sourcing company in Bath, has had more than a fair share of skullduggery to deal with and things don’t get any better. Another well written and well plotted thriller
It all starts with a rugby match when Luke is asked to look into a hedge fund which is producing startling figures. Very quickly his eclectic team of Sam, Helen, Maj and Josh find themselves immersed into a world of online gambling, spot fixing and murder. Trying to solve the riddles and find out who the mysterious and murderous Mr Smith is puts Sam into very dangerous territory whilst Luke struggles to deal with the fact that Sam has a boyfriend.
There are some dark sides to the story but there is also plenty of humour. Great characters in Luke’s team, all well fleshed, and I love to follow their lives alongside the criminal investigations. Loved the storyline but has Luke missed the boat with Sam? Oh Luke, you snooze, you lose! An excellent fast paced thriller. Bring on book 6.
Lethal Odds is the fifth book in the Luke Sackville crime thriller series. Ex-DCI Luke Sackville and his Ethics Team.
Head of Ethics , ex-DCI Luke Sackville and his team of Josh , Helen , Majid and Sam are back again in a fine series , this time the story introduces us to a professional sportsman caught up in a match fixing situation. Meanshile , Luke is made aware of possible irregularities at Filchers involving one of their client accounts, namely an online gambling company. Within a short period of time , there have been several sinister & fatal incidents, causing Luke to be convinced they must be connected in their investigations.
This book is as fast paced as ever , cleverly written & lets all the team display their individual abilities & although it can be read as a standalone, I'd strongly recommend reading the previous 4 titles in the series , to fully see how the main characters have grown into their roles so far.
In summary , a well-deserved 5* review from me & and I am looking forward to #6 “ Sow The Wind “ , due out 5th November.
Luke Sackville investigates a link between a senior executive and a large bet, little realising that what he is seeing is the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface sinister forces are at work, and when he learns of a tragedy following a rugby match Luke spots a possible connection. He sets his team to work and they uncover a gambling syndicate whose cold and ruthless leader will stop at nothing to achieve his aims. It becomes a race against time as they battle to unmask the guilty.
Another exciting read with Luke Sackville and his team. I think each book gets better and better. I liked the premise of this story. So much crime must bubble under the surface of gambling. I like how each of Luke's team get a say and a chance to shine. Luke and Sam are getting a tad drawn out on the romance front though. I do like Josh and he makes me smile but would he be that nerdy in real life? Not sure. This kept me gripped from start to finish and I'm getting less sleep! Looking forward to the next one!
Here we are at the fifth book already in a terrific series and this is another cracker. What initially starts with Luke being asked to stand in at a corporate event at a rugby match while they also look into a harassment case at work, soon escalates into the world of gambling and specifically, fixing of sporting events for betting purposes.
This was so gripping all the way through. The level of research here is obvious and the levels some people will go to for money is scary and quite horrific. What I also really like about the series is the way the characters grow with each story and you feel like you know them and are invested in their lives. We see more developments here in their personal lives too so it's not all work-related. It's so enjoyable to have another series where you look forward to the next book safe in the knowledge that it's going to be excellent. Long may this series continue.
This is the fifth book in the Luke Sackville series but can easily be read as a stand alone. But I'd urge readers to read the last four books in the series. Lethal Odds is an absolute blinder of a book and I can guarantee that you won't be able to put it down until you have finished it. The characters are brilliantly written and as the series continues they just go from strength to strength.
This time the Ethics team at Filcher's have been asked to look into an anomaly which has come to the attention of a possible future client. What at first seems to be someone skimming an online betting syndicate soon turns out to be something much more sinister.
With the story starting with his former Bath rugby team and one of their star players, it soon becomes apparent that there is foul play at hand!
A fantastic plot with plenty of twists to keep you on your toes, Steve has written another Gucci of a novel.
Book 5 in the Ex DCI Luke Sackville series and it just gets better and better. SJ Richards writes so superbly, and his characters are growing with each book, and I cannot wait to find out what is happening next to them, both personally and work wise. Getting to know the characters over the last few books really adds such a great dimension to the book, it gives it real depth.
This story revolves around the Ethics team delving into the online world of gambling and bets. SJ Richards sure knows how to hold out attention and he manages to pack this book with so much intrigue and suspense, absolutely brilliant.
What I really enjoy is the clever way the whole story comes together so smoothly, kudos to SJ Richards for his skilful planning and writing.
Highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a well-paced story full of intrigue.
I have listened to the Audio version of this book. I keep thinking this Luke Sackville series cannot get any better but once again Mr Richards has proved me wrong. This book 5 "Lethal Odds" is superb. It is well researched and well plotted with Luke and his team being called in to investigate irregularities in a hedge fund and Online gambling and spot fixing, all of which lead to murder. All the regular characters are there and it is really necessary to have read the previous books in the series so that you can follow their development and relationships. The story is a bit dark in places but there is also the humour that Steve builds in to all his stories. I'm looking forward to "Sow the Wind" already, roll on book 6. The talented Sam James excels himself once again with the narration and helps make this one of my favourite books of the year.
Lethal odds by S J Richards Book 5 in the Luke Sackville series.
Another great read and I highly recommend it. Once I started it I had to know what happened next. Luke Sackville an ex DCI is the head of a small team in the ethics department at Filchers. Having being asked to look into possible money laundering at a gambling site suspicious deaths soon look as though they may be linked to the investigation. Having uncovered some anomalies in the accounts things take a nasty turn when one of his team ends up in a dangerous situation. Someone will stop at nothing to get what they want. Another great story in this series and I am enjoying getting to know the team more. Although these books can be read as stand alone I recommend you read them in order.
An absolute BELTER of a read - unstoppable action from the get go - a definite 5 star read from me.
(SPOILER FREE) Over the course of this great series by Steve, I’ve really warmed to the characters within Luke Sackville’s team - through great dialogue, good descriptions and that little bit of humour!
As for characters on the not-so-likeable spectrum (!) - this outing for the Ethics team did not disappoint, with a particularly menacing person making his presence known, hell bent on tying up loose ends.
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Filchers crew next - but in the meantime, pack this in your summer holiday bag - you’ll love it!
This is book 5 in the ever improving Luke Sackville series, set in and around the city of Bath. The pace is fast, with plenty of action and some touches of humour throughout. I really like the developing characterisation, especially Josh, the plotting centres around investments and gambling and is very cleverly written. It all builds up to a very tense ending as the investigation into match fixing concludes. I would recommend reading all the books in the series for background information and enjoyment. Another great read from the author who really knows how to write thrillers and keep readers engrossed.
This is the fifth book in the Luke Sackville crime thriller series. Ex-DCI Luke Sackville and his Ethics Team undertake an investigation into a gambling syndicate after suspecting a senior executive being involved in a large bet. The novel is fast paced with some unexpected twists and turns. There’s some great humour, usually involving Josh, which adds contrast to the dark elements of the novel. It even includes a passing mention to a character in a JD Kirk novel, another of my favourite authors. This series just gets better and better and I’m looking forward to reading the next one, Sow the Wind.
I am an ARC reader for these books and am thoroughly enjoying this series, the humour, and the team development is just fabulous. This latest book delves into sporting betting and I must admit I learnt a few things I did not know. The diverse areas the Ethics team get to investigate are so interesting and also quite scary! It’s a really different perspective to usual crime books but as Luke is ex police it all links in and is really interesting as well as so exciting, I struggled to put down at the end with all the twists and turns. I love the team and Josh makes me laugh all the time - such great characters. I would recommend this latest book as a really great read.
Lethal Odds is book 5 in the Luke Sackville series and another thrilling read by author S J Richards. Luke, and his team, are investigating money laundering in investments and spot betting in sports events. Where some of the people who are involved end up dead. And part of his team end up in mortal danger. This is a fast paced read with the loveable characters of the Ethics team we have come to know and love. This is another great gripping read that I couldn’t put down. I will look forward to the next book. 5 stars from me.
This was the 5th book in the series. Back again with the Ethics team and the characters we know and love. It was home from home. The challenges faced by the team this time around had me on the edge of my seat. The danger, the guessing, the anticipation. I was completely blindsided. Everything unravels at breakneck speed, I may even have forgotten to breathe regularly while reading the last 16 chapters in one sitting, I couldn't stop reading. Wow. 5⭐ November seems so long away until the next book.
This latest entry into the Luke Sackville series is another great read. Luke is able to see connections between murders and a suicide that the police miss. As a result he has his team investigate several areas looking for evidence of those connections.
The book brings together several investigations in a skillful way. The several subplots link together in a natural way. The plot of the book moves along at an exciting pace and has a very satisfying conclusion.
The book can be enjoyed both as a standalone book or as part of a larger series. Either way, the reader will enjoy the story.
Loved the narration of Samuel James, who keeps you wanting to listen and brings this thriller to your ears. Perfect
Ex DCI Luke is now Head of Ethics at Filchers, a business sourcing company in Bath.
While watching a rugby match. Luke is asked to look into a hedge fund which is producing startling figures. Luke and his team of Sam, Helen, Maj and Josh find themselves immersed into a world of online gambling, spot fixing and murder. Also trying to find the dangerous Mr Smith.
There is plenty of humour great characters. An excellent fast paced thriller.
The latest adventure for Luke Sackville and his trusty team is a can’tputdownable read taking us through illegal money making schemes and knobbling the betting of certain sports! I love this team of people, even the sometimes annoying Josh who comes out with the strangest of words that you can’t get out of your head somehow. The team must sort through many leads taking them off on dangerous paths before they come to the right conclusions.
This series is developing very nicely and Luke Sackville is definitely in my top 5 of (ex) detectives along with his team. The story is fast paced and a great page turner, so much so that I read it in a day!! Josh is becoming less annoying although you can't help but love him. The story has it all from gambling to illegal betting to a Russian hit man. Eagerly looking forward to the next book now.
Another intriguing chapter in the life of Luke Sackville and his team. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Lots of danger and excitement with the team doing what they do best. I'd love to see a certain 2 people get together. instead of dancing around each other all the time. I highly recommend this series and can hardly wait for more!
Yet another brilliant read in the Luke Sackville series. The story is fast paced and exciting with a healthy amount of menace and suspense. It was great to catch up with the team, see the progression in their stories and their development since the previous book. The touches of humour throughout are, as always, thoroughly enjoyable. Once again a definite five star review from me!
Another stonking good read from S J Richards. Number 5 in the Luke Sackville series. A proper edge of the seat ride. Love the references to J D Kirk’s Robert Hoon! As usual looking forward to the next book in the series as I am very invested in all the recurring characters and their private lives. Thank you Steve for ARC of the book.
Once more author SJ Richards has brought us into the world of Luke Sackville and his Ethics team! This time they have entered the world of gambling and the odds definitely are lethal!
This book is filled with action, undercover thrills and murder! Also we learn more about the team's personal stories and lives, which also keeps us guessing.
He is about to uncover a gambling ring which will put their lives in danger. The gang will do anything to keep their identities secret that they may do whatever is needed. There will be plenty of twists and turns in this wonderful tale. What is going to happen? How will he put a stop to it all? See what will happen
It is a very long time since I read a full length book in a day, but book 5 in the Luke Sackville series was absolutely brilliant, so I did. A great story full of believable characters, I can highly recommend this book (and the rest of the series).
