Already a member of The Feminist Writers’ Guild and one of the principle founders/proponents of the New Narrative movement, Dodie Bellamy published her first book with Hanuman Books in 1991. Feminine Hijinks brings together two long pieces, "Complicity" and "The Debbies I Have Known", along with a new introduction by the author, written for this reissue.

About the author

Dodie Bellamy is an American novelist, nonfiction author, journalist and editor. Her work is frequently associated with that of Dennis Cooper, Kathy Acker, and Eileen Myles. She is one of the originators in the New Narrative literary movement, which attempts to use the tools of experimental fiction and critical theory and apply them to narrative storytelling.

She ist married to Kevin Killian.

I love Dodie Bellamy. Always a champion of the obscure and the weird. Beautiful vignette prose about womanhood, queerness, and the jazz like mischievous freedom/revolt needed to preserve the two. Really reminds me of other humanistic portrayals like Miranda July’s work. I found myself laughing aloud at multiple parts in part 1: “Complicity” and was nonplussed right with her in the hall of mirrors that is “The Debbies I Have Known”—a challenging recollection of a complicated and involved erotic friendship.

Excellent, though I didn’t love the Oscar Wilde-as-Greek-chorus aspect of the second story. Otherwise I thought this was great.

1) the idea of theft, being friends with a klepto, women and complicity
2) Debbie, a pretty woman, smiles when you tell a story then sneers when she retells it to someone else, learning about life thru a friend like this

Those are the two stories in here. I liked reading them and recognizing a location such as diners on Broadway and Belmont, Facets Theater, etc.
