This isn't my usual type of read but who could resist that cover for a start! In this book we have the two sisters Samantha and Annie who are also tennis partners , their bond is a brilliant one to read about but also good to read their own development throughout the book when Annie's boyfriend proposes too her.
The book shows an insight into the tennis world , the relationship/bond it can build. It was in nice short chapters which made it easier and quicker to read. Overall I thought it was a really good read and I really liked the way the author builds up the characters in the novel.
I was instantly drawn to this book by the bright and bold front cover. I'm by no means a sporty person and only ever follow tennis when it's Wimbledon time - but I have to admit that I was super intrigued by the premise of this one.
We follow the lives of sisters, Samantha and Annie Callahan, professional tennis doubles champions. When Annie has her head turned by a new man, things get out of control of on and off the court.
I loved this because even not being super sporty, I found the insight into the sporting world at such a high level to be really interesting - and definitely something I've never read in a novel before.
The bond between the sisters was brilliantly developed over the course of the book. The pressures they were under professionally, I feel both before the split and after, hit both of them hard and it really made you think about how close they were bonded to have made this work for so long - then that one little chink that then sent everything off on a tangent.
I don't have a sister and it's maybe not the same with brothers, but sibling rivalry is such a huge thing to combat. I loved that we saw this through multiple pov's though, which gave us insight into the minds of all and this allowed us to really get to know the individual personalities and how this affected them. This had me rooting for both Annie and Samantha towards the end.
This was a fun and fast-paced read which I finished over the course of a few sittings - I think my first by this author, but definitely won't be the last....
There’s so much more than the insights into the world on tennis in this story. Fast-paced, intriguing and moving, The Pact is a family drama told in different point of views about sisters relationships, sports and a bit of romance.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝘁 by Lisa Darcy - author released April 1, 2024.
“The Pact” by Lisa Darcy is a super interesting story about two sisters, Samantha and Annie Callahan, who are tennis champs. Things get crazy as their friendship is put to the test by personal drama and the stress of the sport. And just when you think things can’t get any wilder, Annie’s boyfriend pops the big question, setting off a chain of events that shake up the sisters’ relationship and dreams.
Samantha and Annie are super well-made characters with totally different personalities that clash and work together in a cool way. Samantha is all about pushing herself while Annie takes things easy, which adds a lot to the story. Samantha’s journey dealing with past stuff and facing current problems is especially cool to watch unfold.
Darcy’s writing is super fun to read, with short chapters that make it easy to keep up with the story. You’ll definitely feel all the feels while reading, from laughing to crying with the characters. This book really dives into the bonds between sisters, chasing dreams, and all the messy dynamics of family.
The book digs into loyalty, ambition, and striving for greatness. Darcy uses flashbacks to add layers to the characters’ backgrounds. Overall, the message that sticks with you is the value of never giving up and how strong family connections can be.
The pacing of “The Pact” is on point, mixing intense drama with funny moments to keep things interesting. The structure flows well, helping the story come together, and it’s an easy read that can be enjoyed by a lot of people.
“The Pact” is a touching story that really gets into the ups and downs of sports and the strong bond between sisters. Darcy really shows off her skills in writing and understanding people’s feelings and connections. I think anyone who likes stories about sports, family, or women’s fiction would enjoy this book. It’s a fun read that will get you thinking, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
Basically, Lisa Darcy’s book “The Pact” is really great. It talks about some deep stuff, has an exciting plot, and characters you can really relate to. So if you’re into tennis or just like stories about life and relationships, you’ll love this book.
I loved everything about this book! The insights into the world of elite tennis, the relationship between the sisters, the tension between the characters, the twists that I didn't see coming. I read it in two sittings - and that was only because I had to go to work rather than finish it!
I enjoyed this book. My boys played tennis in college so I was very intrigued and could absolutely relate to the sacrifices, expectations and mental turmoil athletes experience. This book is full of family, rivalry and love. It’s a quick and easy read. I loved the relationship between the sisters and the process of them navigating their feelings and ambitions both together and individually.
This is a fantastic story of two sisters that play doubles tennis together and what happens when the dynamic between them gets thrown off by life circumstances and the need to find their own paths as individuals. I really loved how the author explored the heartbreak that came from their separation and also the ties that bring them back together. There is a lot of growth in their romantic relationships as well and I enjoyed seeing how that played out. The behind the scenes look at being a tennis player is fascinating and I learned more about the pressures of being a professional athlete. This is a thoroughly engrossing novel that was hard to put down and I loved every minute spent with these magnetic characters.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
This captivating story had me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning pages as I followed the journey of the two sisters. I found myself emotionally invested, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions from frustration to tears. The narrative felt incredibly authentic, offering a raw and honest portrayal of the highs and lows of life as professional tennis players. The depiction of their struggles and triumphs, alongside the traumatic experiences they endured, resonated deeply with me, highlighting the profound impact of mental health challenges not only on individuals but also on their loved ones. Despite not being an avid tennis player myself, the book sparked a newfound interest in the sport within me. I was particularly impressed by the well crafted portrayal of elite players navigating the complex dynamics of competition and friendship. Overall, I found this book to be a compelling and thought-provoking read, and I eagerly anticipate delving into more works by the author.
I really enjoyed The Pact! I liked the look into the world of professional tennis and the small bit of romance. The main focus for most of the story is Annie and Samantha’s relationship. It goes from what seems to be a winning team that gets along both on and off court but quickly becomes tumultuous after Annie’s engagement to a controlling, Scandinavian playboy. My favourite part of the story was Samantha’s character arc. She went from only seeing herself as part of a team with her sister to finally figuring out what she actually wants for herself. I love that once she was no longer playing with her sister that she needed to take the time for herself and by herself to get her head straight. I love her and Bear’s relationship, it was nice to see such a mature relationship! Overall the story is about finding yourself,, learning to let others make their decisions, and that someone’s all you need is one and space to come back together. This was an easy and entertaining read. It kept my attention all throughout reading. I definitely look forward to reading more books by Darcy!
I love family sagas, especially ones that involve sisters (I'm one of three). I didn't have any initial thoughts when choosing this book by Lisa Darcy other than I knew it was a "sister" story.
First of all, I totally related to Samantha!! I too am competitive and get annoyed when others don't take things as seriously as I do. But I also connected with Annie and her situation too. Basically, these two sisters play competitive tennis, and they are GOOD (Olympic level good). They have endorsements and all that jazz. But things quickly go south and decisions are made that forever impact them (I don't want to give too much away).
So, what did I love about it? I loved the competitive edge to the story through the sport of tennis. Darcy does an incredible job putting the reader right in the action. I also loved the rawness of the sisters, and how they both make mistakes and have to learn to move forward. Lastly, I enjoyed the other characters in it and the role they play in the conflict and resolution.
This is a great, easy read, and it checks all the boxes for a great book!
I’m a long-term fan of Lisa Darcy’s work and was super excited to have the opportunity to read an ARC of The Pact - which did not disappoint. The novel follows the journey of sisters and tennis duo, Samantha and Annie Callahan as they deal with the pressures and heartbreaks of professional tennis. Sam is driving force behind the pair, yet when Annie falls for the wrong man, their lives and careers descend into chaos. With great skill, Darcy explores the often-complicated relationship between sisters and by the end, the reader is cheering for both of the dynamic duo, on and off the court. An uplifting story that showcases Darcy’s ever warm and readable voice and gives rare and accurate insight into professional sport, not to mention falling in love and starting over. I don’t play tennis, I don’t have a sister, yet I couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommended.
The Pact by Lisa Darcy. Samantha and Annie Callahan are successful doubles champions–the toast of the Olympics, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadow. But their partnership spirals out of control when Annie’s new boyfriend announces their engagement at the Australian Open. Amidst rising anger and betrayal, Samantha does the unthinkable after a devastating Wimbledon loss. The sisters must confront the past to take control of the present. But can Samantha and Annie both win? This was a good read. I was drawn to this book by the cover. So bright and colourful. It was a little slow in places. The chapters were short. I did like Annie and Samantha. Bear and Zach too. I really didn't like Eric at all.I did love the bond between the sisters. I'm not a sports fan and I don't watch any but I did enjoy the story. I did like the ending. 4*.
The Pact was my first book by Lisa Darcy, but it definitely will not be my last. Darcy is a skilled author who does an excellent job with character and motivation development. She adeptly explores a very complicated sisterly relationship amongst the backdrop of the professional tennis world. It was not necessarily what I expected when I began the ARC, but by the end, I was so grateful that I had picked it up. Game, set, and match to Darcy!
A new sports romance and new author for me - tennis!! I love playing tennis and currently play so l was super intrigued with this one. In the end I really enjoyed this story of Samantha and Annie - a 4 star experience for me. You get a little of everything in this one - betrayal, love story, family love, family bonds, friendship and lots of tennis. I enjoyed this new book by a new author
In The Pact, Lisa Darcy masterfully explores the intricate bonds that tie family members together, set against the high-stakes world of competitive tennis. Sisters Annie and Samantha Calahan share more than just blood; they are doubles tennis champions, a force to be reckoned with on the court. Their success stems from a deep mutual respect and a seemingly unbreakable bond. However, when Annie’s boyfriend proposes, their once seamless partnership begins to unravel. Suddenly, the sisters find themselves at odds, and the rift between them threatens not only their personal relationship but also their dominance in the sport they love. As life pulls them in different directions, they must confront whether they can mend their fractured bond and return to their winning ways.
The Pact is a compelling blend of family drama and sports narrative, reminiscent of the tensions explored in the recent film Challengers. At its core, this novel delves into the forces that both unite and divide family members. Darcy paints a vivid portrait of the love and loyalty that define Annie and Samantha's relationship while also shedding light on the unhealthy codependency that simmers beneath the surface. The introduction of Annie’s fiancé disrupts their perfect equilibrium, leaving Samantha feeling threatened and triggering actions that, while extreme, feel utterly justified from her perspective. As a family drama, Darcy’s novel excels, offering a nuanced depiction of the complex relationship between the two sisters. The more we learn about their dynamic, the more we see the layers of their symbiosis, making their eventual clash all the more poignant and emotionally charged. The sisters’ drive for success as elite athletes is as central to their identities as their bond, deeply affecting their conflicts on and off the court. Darcy’s skillful writing ensures that the story remains grounded in reality, never veering into melodrama. Instead, this book strikes a perfect balance, succeeding as both a gripping sports story and a richly textured family saga, evoking the intensity and depth of the Brontë sisters at their best.
The Pact stands out as a powerful exploration of family dynamics and the pressures of high-level competition. With its engaging narrative and well-drawn characters, it is a novel that will resonate with readers who appreciate stories of sibling relationships, personal growth, and the challenges of balancing love and ambition.
Traditional format 📕 (digital). Being a tennis player and fan I was of course drawn to the cover of this book.
The book is about Aussie two sisters who play professional tennis doubles together. After winning the Olympic gold medal their success comes to an end and one of the sisters decides to quit her partnership. The book does focus mainly on the professional tennis circuit but the book is also about love and relationships.
Things I enjoyed 🎾 the tennis content was accurate and had some real names as well as fictional names 🎾 it was a quick light read perfect for summer
Areas for improvement 🎾 the pacing of the tennis match descriptions way off. The author would spend a few paragraphs describing one game and then in the next sentence give the outcome. It took away from the suspense of the outcome of the games and it was just awkward to read due to the inconstant pacing 🎾 I really hated the main character Samantha. Now this may be what the author was going for but I felt like her character wasn’t well written as the character descriptions were inconsistent and over the place (from flakey to spoiled to not compassionate) 🎾 I feel this book struggled to be a book about tennis OR about sisterly love/relationship but it lacked the identity to be either and sat right in the middle being mediocre at both topics. I think the author could have leaned better into one or the other to make this book stand out a little more.
There are some content warnings (suicide and emotional abuse) if this bothers you.
Overall this wasn’t a horrible book but it wasn’t anything special for me. I give this a 3/5 for being average.
Thank you to BooksGoSocial and Net Galley for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sisters Samantha and Annie Callahan have been Australia’s Golden Girls, winning doubles championships and even Olympic Gold.
It’s hard enough to feel pressure to win all the time, but when Annie’s boyfriend pops the question before a big match, Samantha loses it, and they lose the match, too. As their careers spiral out of control, the media vultures and the sport’s fans have a front-row seat. The question is: will their relationship survive the storm?
The Pact is a dynamic story that captures the pressure and stress of world-class tennis. But it goes far beyond the sport and delves into the relationship between these two sisters and a journey of self-discovery.
I especially enjoyed Samantha’s character. I could see what she sacrificed - especially in relationships - to make this career in tennis with her sister work. Eventually, she matured and found what her heart wanted.
Some heavier topics that could be triggering are discussed, but I didn’t feel they were dealt with in an overly graphic way. I would have loved to have more secondary characters like Zach and Bear fleshed out - because I enjoyed them. Yet, overall, I felt this story displayed the competitive nature of sports and the complex nature of sisterhood very well.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @lisadarcyauthor for a spot on tour and a gifted book.
This was a first for me as far as tennis books go and holy cow, WAS IT AMAZING! Samantha and Annie Callahan are successful doubles champions as well as sisters– the toast of the Olympics, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadow. (that is like 1000 things in three, IMO!) However, things start to go downhill whenever Annie's boyfriends annouces their engagement in Melbourne, Australia. He tries to get Annie to ditch Samantha in favor of doing singles instead of doubles...and basically makes their sister/friend relationship tumultuous leaving the sisters wondering if their relationship will weather the storm? I really enjoyed Samantha and seeing her character develop. She really sacrificed A LOT, especially in her relationships - to make her career with her sister work. I also really liked how we see Zach, who is a former tennis pro himself, in the middle of the chapters. (I love me some dual/multiple POV!) The story really exemplified what people have to go through to get to the Olympic level of competition, as well as dealing with family dynamics in the midst of everything. I am a very competitive person, so reading books such as this made it all the more better! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!
The Pact by Lisa Darcy is a fast-paced story of tennis doubles star Samantha Callahan who must deal with a sudden new fraught relationship with her sister and the potential end of her tennis career. The story begins after Samantha's sister Annie is now engaged after three months, their tennis career is suffering and Samantha's mental health is in dire need of help. A lot of the plot is centered on the relationship between the two sisters and Samantha's fear of abandonment. The story is a quick read and rather exciting, especially in the tennis match scenes. The other characters around Samantha and Annie were another highlight in particular Bear and Courtney. I loved the development of Courtney throughout the book, she begins as someone our characters gossip about to a player that you want to root for. One of the notes that did not appeal to me was the alternating of chapters to Zach, a former tennis pro turned photographer who follows the tennis circuit around the world along with working on his own projects. I preferred the perspective of Samantha so the jumps to Zach slowed the momentum in my eyes.
I'm not a massive reader of books about sports, mainly because I'm not a fan of sports. However, I thoroughly enjoyed The Pact, which is set in the world of professional tennis.
It was the storyline about sisters that drew me to the book, that and the bright cover!
Samantha and Annie are more than sisters, they are also professional tennis players, playing doubles matches and winning gold at the Olympics. Until Annie's boyfriend comes between them and convinces Annie that she should break away from her sister and play singles.
Initially this feels like it could be the end of the sisters careers, and I wasn't sure how Samantha was going to cope. But actually it allowed her to learn how to be herself as a person separate from her sister. I loved her character arc. I also loved the romance between her and Bear, it felt so mature and natural.
I think this book perfectly portrayed the complexities of sibling relationships, especially for siblings who do everything together.
This is one of those books that shattered my heart and slowly put it back together. I was invested in the characters and their relationships and found myself cheering them on, crying with them, and yelling at the pages when I didn’t like their choices. Samantha has always taken care of everyone and has always been focused on playing doubles tennis with her sister Annie. Now everything is changing and Samantha doesn’t know what to do. Her life is spinning out of control and what she always thought would be a part of her is disappearing. What can she do? Is there life after professional tennis? Bear, her coach, has promised to always be there but everyone leaves her. Can she open her heart or is she too afraid of losing someone else? This is a story of sisters and their relationship. It is also a story of love, loss, insecurity, and having the courage to let go and to create a life of your own. I adored this story and did not want it to end.
Thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for providing a copy for my honest review.
The Pact by Lisa Darby is a really fun sports romance that I highly enjoyed. But first, that cover is fantastic, drew me into the story before I even started reading.
I also love that the story was about sisters. This was so relatable to me, the dynamic between the two sister, Annie and Samantha. The bond these two is put to the test in the elite world of tennis.
I will admit, I don't know much about tennis, but it was really fun learning about the behind the scenes.
The pressure of the two sisters as being elite doubles at the top of their game. I really enjoyed the multiple point of views as well.
Will a budding relationship force the sisters to s split up their double team. How will this affect their relationship?
I really enjoyed this sports romance, which was so much more.
The characters were complex, flawed and well developed.
Even if you are not one for sports romance, this is one not to miss!
So this is my first outing into this genre - I haven't read any Sports Romance books before and I was pleasantly surprised with this!
I really did enjoy this, It was a quick read with short chapters that I finished in a couple of sittings!
This mainly focuses on the relationship between 2 Samantha and Annie as sisters and also as tennis partners. This was an interesting read into the world of tennis - coming from a competitive background, I could understand the hard work, determination, and drive that the sisters needed to get to where they were.
This book had great character development for them all, especially with Samantha - we get to see her self-discovery of her as her own person without her sister! It was lovely to see the relationship between Samantha and Bear develop as well.
This is a quick, easy and fun read that I read in one day. It is well written with a compelling story line and well developed characters, that I really liked. I found them so relatable and believable. The story follows Annie and Samantha who are professional doubles tennis champions, and sisters.
I really liked the relationship between the sisters and the insight into the tennis world. I used to live near the Wimbledon tennis courts and so I found this so interesting, even though I am not majorly into tennis it was still fascinating to read about that world.
I loved that the book was told through multiple points of view, which is a technique I really like as I feel like it really lets me know the characters and the story being told. The pacing was also perfect and flowed so well.
Mixing family relationships with business always carries a risk and Samantha is learning this the hard way. She and her sister, Annie, are doubles competitors that have set the tennis world on fire. But Annie’s latest beau turned fiancé has been a big wet bucket that extinguishes their flame. While Samantha is reluctant to take the break from playing with her sister, she has no choice. The Pact is a beautiful story of a sisterly relationship that is so woven through personal tragedy and professional triumph, that the space and need for personal reflection feels impossible. Lisa Darcy creates complex and flawed characters that are written in such a relatable manner that they become friends we can’t help but invest in. An absolutely wonderfully written book that reminds us of the importance of relationships, including the one we have with ourselves.
I was drawn to the book by the striking cover – and who doesn’t love a tennis novel in the summer? I really felt like I was getting a little insight into the tennis circuit. Even better than I expected.
Samantha and Annie Callahan are at the top of their career. They have won Wimbledon and are the Australian – and the world’s darlings. However, when Annie’s boyfriend of 2 weeks announces their engagement on live TV – a surprise to Annie herself - the golden partnership falls apart. I loved Samantha, and was rooting for her all the way through this novel – and not just the tennis! This reminds you that family is all important, and friends are essential. In the words of the sisters – “Be warriors not worriers”.
The characterisations were amazing. The behind the scenes look at the tennis circuit was fabulous. I couldn’t put it down.
A satisfying read (in just two days!) about Australian sisters on and off the professional tennis circuit. I really enjoyed the two main characters and the support cast of quirky and a little bit scary women’s tennis players who had all types of issues. These sisters, Annie and Samantha, had a lot of major life trauma to work through, and did so in very different ways. I read it so quickly because I wanted both sisters to get through their troubles quickly!!! I’m a big tennis fan, so I loved the professional tennis tournament scenes as the place where much of the story unfolded, especially the way the off-court time was portrayed. The male love interests were also well written. Highly recommended - even to non-tennis fans.
This was a really enjoyable read centred around the world of tennis, which is a sport that I didn't previously take the most interest in. While there is a lot of sport involved, it doesn't overpower what is fundamentally a tale of family, friends, and healing. There are heavy topics discussed, including suicide, abuse, and depression. These are not overly prominent and are handled sensitively. There's some romance which, of course, I love! The characters are really well written and personable. The chapters are short, snappy, and had me racing through the book. This is set in Australia, and again, this is a setting I'm not familiar with reading, so it was nice to explore a new world. I really enjoyed this, as I've enjoyed previous works by this author. I'd definitely read more.
This is a delectable women’s fiction that has sister drama and romance in the world of women’s competitive tennis.
I don’t know anything about tennis, but Aussie sisters Samantha and Annie Callahan who are the main characters in this book had me all in!
I love getting an insiders look into anything so I enjoyed all the tennis drama that takes place during the course of the read.
This book has the sisters who are Olympic gold medalists finding discord after one of the sisters becomes engaged.
There is past baggage, present stressors, and folks trying to disrupt the sisters’ success. There are some people that are looking out for the sisters’ best interests including their coach, Bear.
The Pact is the story of Annie and Samantha, sisters who are also doubles partners in professional tennis. The plot for the storyline is interesting and I enjoyed the background of professional tennis. The author does a good job of not idolizing either lead character and so it maintains some balance. You read this page-turner to advance the plot rather than to exclaim over the prose, and in that spirit I enjoyed it. I do think another round of editing could have strengthened the book because I was sometimes distracted by the prose and by abrupt chapter endings. Bottom line, ,if the plot sounds interesting and you enjoy beach books this may be for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. The Pact is available now.
