Together and Apart was written in 1925 and first published in 1944 in the short story collection A Haunted House. It is set at a party in the Westminster home of Richard and Clarissa Dalloway, the hosts of the central social event in the novel Mrs Dalloway.
Two people are introduced at Mrs. Dalloway's party and begin a rather awkward conversation where each of their internal thoughts about the other is revealed. Until they hit upon a subject close to both of their hearts...
(Adeline) Virginia Woolf was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century.
During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929) with its famous dictum, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."
Mrs Dalloway introduced them, saying you will like him.
Two middle aged people chat at a party, introduced by Mrs Dalloway, and the whole relationship proceeds on a whimsical elliptical interior note — a hallmark of Virginia Woolf's inclinations. Every minute ebb and flow of their short interaction is parsed and pondered.
Of all things, nothing is so strange as human intercourse, she thought, because of its changes, its extraordinary irrationality, her dislike being now nothing short of the most intense and rapturous love, but directly the word 'love' occurred to her, she rejected it, thinking again how obscure the mind was, with its very few words for all these astonishing perceptions, these alternations of pain and pleasure. For how did one name this.
"On, Stanley, on" was Miss Anning's watchword, a secret spur, not that she lacked courage but lacked energy, especially when talking to men.
There is a marvellous energy in Woolf's languid interior world — if one lingers one becomes lulled into a deeper marvel, into a liminal intimacy with nameless feelings and wordless thoughts.
Mr Serle's self pride makes him feel highly of self worth, but the fakery makes it quite difficult and hard mentally. MIss Anning is very aware of what is going on around her. This relationship is based mostly on a conversation about Canterbury. The story is short but it implies a lot of deep observations.
I came across it because I'm reading classics these days and just wanted a short read. But this was such a pleasant surprise. To bring about so many feelings in such limited words has to be magic!
Viva Virginia 💕🫶🏼💃🏾
I think Woolf's story is more of a personal exploration, in the sense that it explores the way we perceive others, and also the way we think we are perceived by others. This comes naturally since Woolf is a renowned master of the "stream of consciousness". The question evoked here is always an interesting question because the reflection we see of ourselves in the person in front of us does actually influence how we are going to act in the future, and it makes us think about taking a leap into the unknown that is someone else's mind.
