בעור שיניהם: על עלייתם של יהודי פולין לפני השואה
הספר בעור שיניהם בוחן את דרמת המאבק לעלייה של יהודי פולין ערב השואה. מתוך למעלה משלושה מיליון יהודי פולין, רק אחוזים בודדים הצליחו לצאת מפולין בשונות ה-30 של המאה ה-20; רובם עלו לארץ ישראל, אשר הייתה אז, למרות מגבלות העלייה של ממשלת המנדט, כמעט המקום היחידי שבו יכלו למצוא מקלט. מספרם המועט של הסרטיפיקטים לעומת שאיפתם של רבים מאוד מיהודי פולין לצאת את ארצם הוביל למאבק נואש על רישיונות העלייה. רוב היהודים שרצו לעלות לא הצליחו לעשות זאת, ורבים עוד יותר כלל לא שקלו אפשרות זו עקב סיכוייהם האפסיים.
בעור שיניהם בוחן מצב טרגי זה מנקודת מבטו של היחיד, כלומר בחינת התנאים שבהם היה עליו לעמוד, הקשיים שהיה עליו להתמודד עמם ואפשרויות העלייה הכול כך מועטות אשר עמדו בפניו. כל זאת על רקע מצבה הכלכלי, החברתי והפוליטי הקשה של פולין, ומצבם הקשה הרבה יותר של יהודי פולין, על רקע כלל ההגירה היהודית מפולין.
בבעור שיניהם נבחנת מדיניות ממשלת המנדט והסוכנות היהודית כפי שהיא באה לידי ביטוי "בשטח" – בפעילותו של המשרד הארץ-ישראלי בפולין, ביחסים שנוצרו בין המשרד המרכזי בארץ למשרד בוורשה, ובהשלכות המעשיות של המדיניות על העלייה מפולין. מאבק עז על רישיונות עלייה התנהל בין כל הגורמים ובכל החזיתות. על רקע זה התגלה מספר לא קטן של מקרי שוחד, זיוף מסמכים וקניית תעודות.
לצד תיאור מכמיר לב של מאבקם של יהודי פולין לעלייה, חושפת אירית צ'רניאבסקי את שבר הפרידה מבני המשפחה, מהקהילה, מהחברים ומכל העולם שאותו השאירו מאחור המעטים אשר הצליחו לעלות, עולם אשר נעלם בשואה שנים ספורות לאחר עלייתם.

Sorry, I could not finish this book
This book went back and forth too much to hold my interest. Excellent charts and graphics. I am not sure who would enjoy this other than perhaps another writer searching for factual numbers.

Interesting but tedious at times
The subject matter was very interesting. However, at times it was very tedious to read, because it seemed like, to me, the author kept repeating himself in places.

‘My dream of Aliyah is like a beautiful and unattainable fantasy….’
Israeli author Irith Cherniavsky earned her degrees in economics and sociology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and in addition she studied Jewish History there. Her PhD dissertation ‘The Polish Jew, Emigration in the 1930s’ forms the platform of this book, AT THE LAST MOMENT, her debut publication.
Opening with a well researched, detailed history of the town of Mezeritch in eastern Poland whose primary industry was the Jewish operated stubble factory that manufactured handmade hog hairbrushes. In electing to introduce her dissertation on the Jewish struggle for emigration by focusing on this small town and its people, the tenor of this fine book is set – an emphasis on the personal aspects of the trials of leaving Poland that Jews sustained between WW I and WW II. The term ‘Aliyah’ is significant, and for those unfamiliar with that word, Aliyah denotes ’the immigration of Jews from the Diaspora to the Land of Jerusalem – the act of going up (Towards Jerusalem).’ Though the initial term is biblical, the use of the term in contemporary times has rarely been more aptly reflected as in the plight of Jews to leave threatening places to find a haven in what would become the state of Israel.
As Irith states, ‘In 1937, a brush making cooperative was organized in Mezeritch to help its members emigrate to Palestine (Israel).’ And with that launch, the impressive docudrama of this book provides on of the most thorough and well-written histories of the bravery and commitment that Jews from Poland experienced in their Aliyah!
‘In the Thirties of the previous century, a thousand years of Polish Jewish history raced to a tragic end. The Jews tried to leave Poland in every which way, but their attempts were unsuccessful, and only a handful of them succeeded. America closed it doors to immigrants, and Israel became virtually the only possible destination for anyone trying to escape a country that offered only poverty, anti-Semitic harassment, and exclusion. Unfortunately, the gates of Palestine were also not open.’
This is their story - a history too few people know or understand, complete with visuals, and Dr. Cherniavsky offers the imprint that deserves our attention. This is a definitive and very important document.

This is the best book in the world, and I would recommend it to everyone. Even if you aren’t interested in the book, you will find yourself in love with it. The book is very descriptive and gives you a rich knowledge of emigration. Irith Cherniavsky is the best writer in the world, and I read this book twice it was so good. Before you try to find another book, read this one. It is available on Amazon, and trust me, it is worth buying it!! 🔥♥️🔥
