Lucky Liv?
Yes, Olivia Lassiter—just Liv to most people—has led a charmed life. She has a supportive family, fun friends, a job she enjoys, and a fiancé who’s crazy in love with her. She’s in love with him right back, and everything is great. It’s wonderful, right up until she steps onto a flight from Detroit to San Francisco.
Well…it’s true that before that flight, her fiancé may have dumped her. And before that, she may have forced him to get engaged and put an ugly ring on her finger. And maybe, her fiancé is not exactly what she had dreamed of, anyway.
So Liv has been leading a (mostly) charmed life, up until that flight when she gets the middle seat in between a snotty teenager and a giant. Yes, her seatmate is a virtual giant, and his name is Gabriel Hunt—just Hunt to most people. They’re supposed to ignore each other for a few hours, land, and then head off on their separate ways. Liv is going to fix everything with her fiancé, and the giant and the teenager? Who cares what those people will do?
Things don’t go as they were meant to, and the three strangers on that flight end up with their lives changed in ways that none of them could have expected. In fact, Liv’s charmed existence has broken into pieces, and she has to gather everything back together and start again. But her new life might include that stranger, that giant—her new life could be with Gabriel Hunt. It could be better than great…it could be the luckiest thing that ever happened.

Wonderful surprise!

Liv (FMC) is called by all her family members: "Lucky Liv" as she always had a good, easy and fortunate life.
Her fiancé moved to another state and sent her a message saying that long distance relationship isn't working for him anymore. The story kick in when Liv is at the airport waiting for any empty seat so she can fly to her fiancé and surprise him.

Lucky Liv finally gets the seat. She's to be seated in the middle of two worst passengers.
At her right is a rude, snappy teenage girl. At her left is a huge muscled man that couldn't get contained by his seat, so Him and Liv were passively-aggressively fighting for comfort.

Until: The plane was CRASHING DOWN. There were NO survivors but those three: The teenager, Liv and Gabriel Hunt (MMC) who took them to safety.

The story deals with Liv becoming the unluckiest woman dealing with depression, survivor guilt, lack of orientation. Gabriel Hunt who was an ex marine and had a bad childhood was the strongest mentally of them three and helped both Liv and Thea the misunderstood teenager a lot.

I loved how Liv fell slowly but beautifully for him. I loved that her feelings were not about trauma bonding. I love that Gabriel and Liv couldn't get a full night sleep unless they slept in each other's arms (way before being romantically involved)

Loved so many things about this book. Especially that it provided me an extraordinary example of "A disastrous first meet" for my Bingo Challenge of 2025!

I can see the issues some people had with this book.

It was easy to read, great rhythm and the characters were all good.

But I did miss the romance bit, it was a bit… forced? I felt like Hunt should have had more feelings toward her, but I guess he kinda was like that, so it sort of made sense (look at me, explaining things like an open book 🤦🏻‍♀️).

It was good, but I would have loved more emotion in this one, I feel like Liv deserved it.

I've enjoyed all of this author's books but this one really hit the spot. I imagine it was a combination of my mood, timing, etc., but I can't discount that I just enjoyed the plot and, as always, this author's voice.

The heroine, Liv, was one of only three survivors in a plane crash, the other two being a giant, gruff man and a snotty teenager (all she knew of them pre-crash) who she was sandwiched between on the plane. This occurs in the prolugue, and the book picks up six months later so there is no stranded somewhere plot (which I am not a fan of usually), with the three survivors dealing with their trauma back in the real world.

Jamie Bennett's books always center on a heroine trying to get her life together amidst various challenges, with a slow romance (no steam) woven into it but kind of in the background at the same time. I especially enjoyed the slow romance between her and the aforementioned gruff giant Hunt, as well as her "nutty" but kind family. A lot of times this author's heroines have some or all crummy family so it was nice that hers was annoying but really sweet. As always, looking forward to the next book.

This was very sweet, I liked everyone in the book. Sounds boring right? Haha. It wasn't, I promise. A pretty typical JB, except no awful parents, and the traumatic back story was surviving a plane crash instead of crappy people doing crappy things.

I am completely hooked on this author, even though her characters are all very quirkily similar. They can come across as very dry, but then these one-liners pop up that are so unexpected they make a surprise snort pop out of me.

I don’t know how to feel about this book. Truly. On the one hand it was very readable and had a good pace, I found myself coming back to it easily. On the other hand there’s a lot that this book didn’t do successfully. I can only describe it as this book is like skipping stones. We are skidding along on the surface and making occasional contact but the ride is fast and shallow. Other criticisms:

1) Liv acts like an absolute child throughout. And that works to a degree, because of the trauma, but it also doesn’t sell that she’s grown and healed by the end of the story. The meeting with her enmeshed, codependent-ass family at the end?? I thought we want to believe she’s matured?? And then add to that the fact that Hunt is 10 years her senior also makes it icky.

2) The other side of that coin is all the business about how Thea had a crush on Hunt too, and the way Liv talks about it like that may have been…okay?? She is A CHILD. “If you did ever get together with him, I wouldn’t be mad.” No, Thea, not a feeling for you to have because he’s a grown man and you are a literal child! “Is she going to be upset?  Because I thought that she might have felt…” He’d seen it in her, too.  “Yes, she formerly had a crush on you,” I reported, “but not anymore.  She’s really into Yanis now.  He writes her love poems in French but she thinks you have bad taste in music.  And sorry to tell you—you’re too old.” I BEG YOUR FINEST PARDON.

3) Hunt is…a handsome large thing. Is he smoldery and quiet or is he a goofball? This book can’t decide. He’s drawn as sharply as a child using a broken white crayon. And then the whole stupid fight over the shitty ring.

4) The sex writing is so bad. So, so bad. “Are you ready for me?” EW!! “It was fast and hard before I realized what was coming—I was.” WHAT. EW! Or referring to his dick as “a mighty projection.” 🙄

5) Finally, much like a skipped stone, the ending of this book has too much happen too fast. If you’re going to write a slow burn, you need a slow reveal. The reader already saw all the ways he had shown his devotion to her throughout, but she’s an idiot so it would have been a good reveal if he told HER. ESPECIALLY since we don’t really know him well. And her annoying, babying parents went from hating him to cheering their proposal without any real justification?

I liked Lucky Liv, but I felt that there could have been more depth added to understand characters like Gabriel Hunt better. Even though there is a lot mentioned about Liv, it felt like it was only the surface. I am intrigued by what’s going on with Nicola Curran, though. I did enjoy the story, but there’s an underlying sadness, a feeling of loss, and trying to understand why because of what happened.

Hmm ok so to start off- yes this was a pretty good book, I loved the plot concept, the characters, and it was definitely different from what I thought this book was going to be about but I’m not complaining.

(Slight spoilers below)
But where I am going to complain is the lack of romance in this romance novel. I read through the kindle app and I kid you not the first kiss happens with 20 pages left in the book, 5% left. This was not just a slow burn it was barely a few embers.

I love dual pov so much so it kind of sucked that this book didn’t have that, but that is something I can get over, the lack of actual romantic content was what knocked this down a few stars for me.

There were a few other slightly annoying things. The family was really overbearing at times but I hated how Liv wasn’t’t really making her own decisions. She acted like she had to have her parent’s approval for things when she’s a grown ass woman. I understand wanting your family’s approval but she was making decisions that they did not need to be giving input on. Plus the family seems so unaccepting of her moving in with him and being romantically involved with him yet they are perfectly happy when he randomly announces his love for her in front of them after no known romantic interaction between them for a year?

And don’t get me started on Thea and her crush on him. The way she told Liv that she wouldn’t be upset if she dated him yet Thea’s 16??!! Like he was already 10 years older than Liv (which I already find gross) but for Liv to check with Thea and make sure she wouldn’t be upset is actually insane.

It kind of dragged on at some parts and I got bored for a bit just because the plot got so empty. I think this book had a lot of potential and their chemistry was so good so it’s sad that my favorite part of the book was at the last 10%.

Listen, I will try to be nice for once since it's Christmas and all. So here it goes, I thought it was an exciting idea to pick three completely random strangers with nothing in common and make them face the surreal situation of surviving a plane crash together. But frankly, this is where my praise stops. Why? Because after this pivotal incident, the plot just completely vanished. Nothing is happening. There is no depth to any characters, no development, and no plot to move things along. There's just a bunch of random people who keep helping each other but it doesn't work if there is no plot with a clear destination in mind. I just wasn't hooked on this story, I would read a few pages, put the book down and do something else, before coming back to reading a few more pages. I honestly have no idea what the author tried to achieve with this book. There's just not enough there. No one seems to have any motivation and nothing comes together to work as it should. I really wanted to like this book, but even after reaching page 231 of 266 in my e-reader, I had nothing. I couldn't tell you what this book was about, because truly, the only semi-related plot development happens in the first chapter and from then on, this book did nothing.

Single POV, always appreciated.

A decent Jamie Bennett book. The FMC was a little wishy washy and annoyed me at time, but I felt like she addressed her own shortcomings when the people in her life called her out on them. There was some sparkle with the side characters, but not as much as some other of Bennett’s books with absolutely delightful side characters. I also appreciated that there was a decent amount of interaction with the MMC so the romance was more believable. It still fell pretty short of some of her more well-loved reads. I needed a single POV palate-cleanser and this mostly hit that box.

I'm not sure what it is about Jamie Bennett's stories, but they just work for me. There have been a few misses, but not many. She's the queen of slow burn romance. I don't always like how long it takes for the main couple to get together, but I'm usually happy with the ending.

This story was really compelling, overall I really loved it.

This was another wonderful book by Jamie Bennet! Very sweet and easy to read. The surviving of a plane crash was what lead to the bond created between the main characters. I loved how even whilst going through their own trauma, they were there for one another. Pushing and supporting one another. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

I wasn't into the rest of the series which continues about the Ex's sisters and read as a standalone.

I liked it because our MFC wasn't perfect and struggled with the traumatic life event but she came through it with help.

I loved Hunt and Thea. I loved Ava and even stupid Levi and Liv's parents.

The end wraps up quite quickly and I'm kinda sad we didn't get a Thea book in the series.

My first book by this author and I liked it pretty well.

I really connected with Liv in that her life seemed to be turned upside down and she really didn't know what to do next. I thought that Bennett did a great job at conveying Liv's emotions and I really felt it. This seemed more literary fiction to me and not romance. The romance between her and Hunt was sooooooooooo slow burn that I didn't even realize the flame was there until the very end. But Liv's story was pretty interesting. I liked seeing how she picked up the pieces of her life and made a new one for herself. I probably won't pick up anymore by this author, just because literary fiction/womens lit. isn't exactly my speed. But this story was pretty good and I still enjoyed it.

3.5 rounded up (would have been higher but the last 25% derailed).

this was a really sweet, unique, easy read (despite detailing a traumatic event and the harrowing path to recovery). the third act break-up did kind of trample my enjoyment - it felt contrived & unnecessary. nonetheless, the writing flows seamlessly & the storytelling is excellent. its a very character-driven story, rooted around the tragic plane crash that brings together our hero&heroine (as well as thea, a teenage girl and the only other survivor).

the mmc - Hunt - is basically superman. look up ‘hero’ in the dictionary, and you’ll find Hunt. enigmatic, elusive, taciturn, intelligent, protective, caring & kent clark levels of goodness, this man is pure gold with superhero levels of athleticism and strength. he was kind of a loner but i loved that he found his HEA with liv & her big, boisterous family.

liv was sweet and selfless, if a little too naive (bordering on spineless when it came to her ex). for 99% of the book, there was so much left unsaid between her & hunt, and their relationship could have progressed much quicker if they just communicated.

on that note, the 3rd act breakup literally made no sense; the catalyst was flimsy at best and i didn’t understand the heroine’s motivations for staying away from hunt? this guy had been nothing but perfection to her? also, not to rag on a teenager, but i felt liv cut thea too much slack sometimes when it came to Hunt, and it was giving doormat. also, why the hell was liv letting the opinions of a teenager determine her own feelings towards clark kent’s doppelganger?
regardless, she was a likeable character for most of the book (even if she behaved like an absolute fool when it came to her ex fiancé & a blasted ring).

if the characters had continued spending time together & deepening their connection organically, rather than randomly separating for the last 20% of the book, this story would have been a no brainer 4/5 stars. instead, we never actually got to spend time with the fmc&mmc once they decided to romantically commit to one another; they reconciled, had sex, before a brief epilogue & bam, its the end.

i just wish we got more of them together as a couple.

anyway, i still really enjoyed this. a sweet romance, detailing the journey from friends-to-lovers as the hero helps the heroine to heal emotionally/mentally. in helping the heroine to get her life back on track, he finds himself falling in love & opening up in ways he was never able to previously.
