Twelve books, nine friends, four babies and one unimaginable tragedy that will change their small town forever.
The Barrington girl-posse is back.
With friendship ties stronger than ever and often hilarious girl-banter, the women we know and love spontaneously begin a book club. Yes, it’s about reading books, but it’s also a way to ensure they catch up, altogether, one night per month. Leaving little ones with their menfolk, book club becomes the place to share fun and laughter along with hopes, dreams, secrets and fears. And lots of coffee, wine and food.
Over the course of a year, twelve books are read, four babies are born, relationships grow, businesses change and newcomers arrive. But when tragedy strikes one of their own, their small-town world is spun off its axis.
Now book club is more than girl-chat and paperbacks. It’s where they share their grief and help their small town recover.

Romance books you'll fall in love with.
Susan Mackie writes heart-warming, character-driven romance and women's fiction. Small town stories with all the feels and a community you'll want to move to.
Every person and every place has a story to tell. Do you drive by old homes and wonder about the lives of those that built them, lived there, loved and lost? Writers tell such stories. Sometimes real, sometimes imagined. Often both.
Debbie's cafe was where all her friends congregated and when it was decided they form a book club, meeting at the cafe once a month after it closed in the evening, everyone was excited. Gradually they worked their way through their chosen books, all by Australian authors, (most of which I've also read), as well as eating delicious snacks, enjoying a wine as well as talking and laughing. Several of the women were pregnant, with their babies due fairly closely together. There was excitement, anxiety and happiness for them all.
When Millie was hired to be manager for Debbie's cafe while she was off on maternity leave, Millie slotted in easily. She also joined the book club and came to know the friends well. But when tragedy struck, the town came together and the cafe became a place for friends to grieve...
The Barrington Book Club is #8 in the Barrington Series by Aussie author Susan Mackie and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It reminded me of when I was in a face-to-face book club many years ago, and the fun we'd have once a month, with our differing opinions of a particular book. The characters are great, easy to get to know - I was entertained completely with this book, and recommend it highly.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.
I was keen to catch up with the Barrington ladies, Rose, Debbie, Meggie, Harriet, Frances, Nicole, Laura and all these characters seem like real people to me and I'm fond of them and are included in the previous seven novels in the series.
The women decide to start a book club, read a novel written by an Australian author each month, gather at the Debbie’s café and have a chat, the coffee machine comes in handy, have a glass of wine, share baked treats and the blokes look after the kids.
Harriet, Debbie, Rose and Melanie are pregnant, everyone is thrilled about the new arrivals, despite two of the pregnancies being high risk. Debbie has to work out what she’s going to do with the café, so she can spend more time with Jamie, little Woz and new baby and she employs Millie Tucker as a manger and she’s a great addition to the town, café and joins the book club.
I enjoyed the girl-banter, they had fun, talked about issues and problems and ways of solving them, for those of us who have wanted to be mothers, been pregnant and blessed with children, know it’s a both scary and happy time.
I liked how each book and name of the Australian author was included and I added a couple to my want to read list.
A narrative about the small town of Barrington, in country New South Wales, the residents, highs and lows, including a miscarriage and dementia diagnosis, and when tragedy strikes they rally and support the bereaved family and I cried numerous times.
Five stars from me and I highly recommend The Barrington Book Club (Barrington Series #8) by Susan Mackie and next up The Secret Reader and I can't wait to see what happens between Millie and Finn Anderson.
I am not sure where to start with this one and I do hope I can do it justice, this is a beautiful story, not only is it about a book club but it is about friendship, support a place for the Barrington girl-posse to talk, to open up, to laugh and to share secrets, dreams and hopes for the future, to come together as one while enjoying some fabulous books, food, wine and coffee, why not come along and join them.
Rose, Meggie, Harriet and Debbie are at the cafe, Coffee is my Calling which is owned by Debbie all talking, when talk turns to a book that Harri is reading and soon they have decided to start a book club this will bring them together for a night out once a month, and with Melanie, Laura, Nicole and Francis joining them it always ends up a great night, the talk is good as they discuss the book they have read but they also discuss their lives and what is happening, and of course their pregnancies, with Rose, Harri Debbie and Melanie all pregnant at the same time this is a big discussion.
The book club is very popular and over the twelve months lots has happened they have read twelve fabulous books there is a new member of the book club Millie who has settled in so well not only to the book club but to the town as well, there are new babies for everyone to love and cuddle and then tragedy strikes, the town is turned upside down by this, but the love and support that small towns give when needed have really stepped up this time, but looking towards the future is going to be hard for a while.
I loved this one so much I have read all of the books in the series and nine of the twelve books they read. I do hope we go back there again, Barrington is one of my most favourite towns as is the people who live there, the ranks are growing with babies and new comers, Millie and Finn are fabulous characters. Be warned though you are going to need a box of tissues while reading this one, there are still tears from me while writing this review, but it is a heart-wrenching and heart-warming story at the same time, what strength, courage love and friendship does when needed and the people of Barrington have loads of it.
Thank you MS Mackie for another fabulous story in this series, it is one that I highly recommend, yes I smiled, I laughed, I cheered them on and I cried, big time but don’t miss this one and the series.
My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
⭐️4.5 Stars⭐️ The Barrington Book Club: Small Town Romance by Susan Mackie is such a beautifully written and heartfelt story of caring friendships, births, babies, tragedy and a book club. The story is set in the rural town of Barrington and I just ate it up.
In this book we welcome a new character Millie who needs a fresh start.
This story will delight any bibliophile and showcases twelve novels by Australian authors which are cleverly woven into the storyline. What a lovely gesture to promote these other books…. books inside a book. Loved all the book chat!
The first book I ever read by Susan was Charlie's Will and since then I have absolutely loved following the adorable characters of this wonderful community in Barrington.
There’s a fabulous summary of all the characters in this edition which is great for those who may begin with this book.
A brilliant read and a page turner! Check out the rest of the series too.
Thank you Susan for gifting us a copy to read and review. A year is a chapter of life that ensures you feel every emotion, celebrate achievements and face realities. A wonderful combination of a small town, a Bookclub, close knit community and the birth of babies is to be tested by tragedy. A story that brings all the characters from the series together and updates the reader on the latest news and events of their lives. This colourful cover invites, seduces and its title will grab any bibliophiles attention. Showcasing twelve books by talented Aussie authors and the joy reading brings enhanced even more by sense of camaraderie and friendship the pursuit brings. Promoting these books was a fabulous and generous idea and I nodded my agreement in their views. Like a delicious dessert, Susan has added a sprinkle of everything in this compelling read and has captured life as it really is. I have read all this series and I highly recommend reading them all. I loved Charlie’s Will but I might now have a new favourite.
A delightful read, despite a tragedy in the close-knit community, or perhaps even because of it. The girl-posse gather together in a spontaneously formed book club, The Barrington Book Club, where they share their joys and concerns in a monthly get together. There, they make everyone feel so welcomed in their friendly environment. They happily take-in newcomer, Millie; they cocoon dear old Frances and make each one feel part of the community. I have to add here, that Millie and Finn were my favourites. Loved the whole small town community vibe of the story and the easy flow of daily lifestyle.
Harriet Murray, wife of Drum Murray is caught out by Meggie Hamilton dashing a book she has been reading under a file under her desk. As Harriet is pregnant, Meggie jokingly asks if she is reading yet another natural childbirth book. Harriet admits that no, it isn't but it is a book by an Australian author and she simply can't put it down. Later in Debbie Tait's coffee shop, Coffee Is My Calling, best friends Rose, Debbie, Meggie and Harriet further discuss the book and so the decision is made to form a book club (or girl-possie as their men nickname it) with the name of The Barrington Book Club.
They decide to meet once a month, leaving their respective children with the husbands, and the aim is to initially meet to discuss books written by Australian authors first of all. The girls are joined at each meeting by other close friends Melanie, Nicole, Laura and Francis. Happy and carefree evenings are enjoyed by all women with food, wine, coffee and the warmth and love of the company of each other.
As Debbie is also pregnant and wishes to stand back a little from daily work in the cafe, after interviewing for a prospective Manager for the business, the job is offered to Millie who also joins with the others in the Book Club.
Over a period of twelve months, apart from reading and discussing twelve books, much happens in the township of Barrington. Businesses are rearranged or change hands and the women discover that all pregnancies are not the same and, being the close friends that they are, the things they each experience are openly discussed. Also within this time, four babies are born, new friendships and relationships are formed and life continues enclosed in the comfort and peace of a small country town.
When tragedy strikes one of their own, the town is in turmoil and all the love and strength of close friends is needed in a way that none of them could have seen coming.
This is Book #8 in the Barrington Series and I have been with this community from the very beginning with Book #1, Charlie's Will. I have loved coming back to catch up with these women and their men whom I regard as friends. I have laughed and cried with them, love the delight of the children who have come into each story and I very much hope that we will have many more stories about Barrington from one of my favourite authors, Susan Mackie.
I love this book, I love all eight books and highly recommend them all to other readers. You will love the country feel and love each book gives. Thank you Susan for this and all your books.
This book was something special. The Barrington Book Club is the first in the series that actually made me cry—but in the same breath, it also made me smile, laugh, and feel completely at home. Returning to Barrington felt like catching up with old friends; I was instantly wrapped in the comfort, warmth, and chaos of the girl posse I’ve come to love.
Susan Mackie has this way of writing that makes you want to pack your bags and move to Barrington. The friendships feel real, the banter is always on point, and there’s such a strong sense of community that it honestly feels like you’re part of it all.
This time around, the women form a book club—not just for reading (though the book choices were a fun touch!) but as a way to keep connected through the whirlwind of babies, businesses, relationships, and life. Their monthly catch-ups are full of laughter, honesty, and plenty of food, coffee, and wine—basically everything you’d want in a girls’ night.
But beneath the feel-good moments and hilarious conversations lies a deeper layer of emotion. When tragedy strikes one of their own, it rocks the entire town. Watching the women rally together with strength, vulnerability, and unwavering support was truly moving. It gave the story so much heart and reminded me why this series means so much.
Each book in the Barrington series just keeps getting better, and this one? It’s unforgettable.
The Barrington Bookclub by @susanmackieauthor A massive shout out to Susan for gifting this latest offering in the Barrington series. How gorgeous is the cover? Set for release on 7 June
This was definitely my favourite in the series where we reconnect with all of the characters from the previous books and we also meet some new ones. I loved that Susan has added a cheat sheet at the start of the book with all the characters and which book they featured in. You could read this as a standalone but is definitely beneficial if you’ve read the others.
This story has a bit of everything - lots of babies are born, new people arrive to town and one tragedy that changes everything. I also appreciated that the books featured are all Australian female authors. Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view which I really liked and added to the story - giving us an insight into each character.
Like a warm blanket, Susan’s books are such a comforting read. I don’t want to give away too much so you’ll have to read it for yourself.
I loved this book. It is the latest the Barrington Series by Susan Mackie. It was great to catch up with the girls who I had met in previous books. It was great to see how they supported each other. They formed the Book Club in order to not only discuss books but make sure that they made time for themselves and each other. There is a bit of everything shared along the year over which this book takes place - fun, laughter, tears, fears, secrets, hopes, and dreams. At the start of the book Susan has put a Community description of whose who and how/where they fit. I found this really helpful as it has been a while since I have read earlier books in the series, it helped me refresh on the people I was going to read about. I highly recommend this book and the others in the series. You can read this book without having read the previous books.
What a brilliant idea to tell the story through the book club. I really liked these characters and had to read late to find out who and what the tragedy was about.
A warm-hearted story that also generously highlights novels written by other authors. There is so much to enjoy in this tale of friendship and love. Uniquely Australian, yet told in a companionable style, reminiscent of Maeve Binchy.
A delightful story. Susan Mackie has done it again, woven us into the lives of the Barrington women. Filled with companionship, excitement and the unthinkable… a tragedy. But even the most wonderful lives can endure a sadness that rocks communities. Banding together, they support each other through the tough times, and Susan has captured the essence of small town friendships beautifully. I love the nods to fellow Australian authors with every book club meeting, and look forward to the next one in the series.
The first book I’ve read by Susan Mackie. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Feel good reading at its best for me. I’ll sure to read more of Susan’s book
I love this series so much! Starting a book club, the women choose a new book to read each week and the wine flows also. This one should be called "Something in the water" instead as all the babies are born! 😉 It's nice to see!
I love how the women in Barrington are all strong, independent and entrepreneurs. Rallying round when needed, helping at the cafe, the elopement business and the family/friend gatherings.
I really feel for Frances in this one, we don't really know much about her I feel but this gives an insight into her side via her chapters. It's relatable to me so know how her situation can go.
My heart was in my throat at one point, readers of this one will know where and I didnt see it coming at all! I wonder where the next one will take us as each book sees us on a new adventure and I'm here for it!
The Barrington Book Club by Susan Mackie is a touching story of friendship, love, babies and books. Susan crafts a captivating story that immerses readers in the beauty of Barrington, where love blooms and strengthens amidst the mountains and rural setting.
If you haven't read any of the Barrington series yet, they are must reads. The Barrington Book Club is the perfect book to pick up, enjoy a tea or coffee and soak up the small town atmosphere within the pages. The characters will draw you in and will have you feeling like you know them personally. Get ready to laugh, smile and cry with them throughout their relatable journeys, which resonate with readers on a deeply emotional level.
The front cover is eye-catching with a gorgeous illustration. Another wonderful thing about this book is that Susan has actually created a Barrington Book Club for women to share their love of books and discuss chosen reads.
The structure of the Barrington Book Club makes this book unlike any other. Susan celebrates other authors within her story, as the book club enjoy books together, discussing and reviewing. The book is a celebration of writing.
Susan's writing will have readers flipping pages faster than a kid eating a chocolate cupcake. The Barrington Book Club is well structured, beautifully written and heartwarming novel.
Do yourself a favour and get a copy of this beautiful book.
Another treasure of Susan's. Susan writes with such warmth and heart, her characters are people you want to meet!
The characters have big stories and are warmly intertwined.
I never want to put her books down, let alone finish reading them!
This one, had me guessing at what might happen ar every chapter. So many issues touched on and collaboration of such a wonderful group of loving, supporting and sisterhood of women.
The men of the town are the back bone but the women are the heart! The heart and soul of the town.
You will meet little ones that will make your heart melt. You learn about long held dreams and dreams that come true. You will share with them their experiences and you will worry and cry with them too!
The book club is not only a chance for the girls (women) to be girls, but to share their experiences, worries and sorrows.. It's an occassion for celebration; as not only are book club books discussed but wine and good food enjoyed too.
It's a chance to share, experience and come together in unity. They will need it!
Primarily this is a story about a small close knit community and the residents within, but friendship is at its centre with love and loss. This one has all the feels and is such a clever and original idea. Plus, who doesn’t love a bookclub?
What an excellent story of friends who support each through the ups and downs of everyday life. Beware it’s a tear jerker as births disappointments and tragedy happen. I love the Barrington stories. Susan has such a way with words as she tells each story. Keep writing Susan Mackie.
If there was an option for more stars this book would get them! Another absolutely magnificent read by Susan Mackie and a brilliant installment in the Barrington series. Highly recommend! Congratulations Susan, incredible once again!
I loved this book but couldn't give it 5 stars because of what happened to Debbie. How could you do this, Susan? And to Jamie too? I cried my eyes out, which just shows you wrote such a good book that I was truly invested in it. I will keep reading your books though so you can redeem yourself (😉).
It is a story about how friends and community help us through good and bad times. Even when something terrible happens, being together, caring, and loving each other helps us heal and keep going.
The best book of the series so far. A couple of new characters brought into the series and absolute heartbreak which shocked me and brought me to tears.
I so enjoyed all the books in this series and especially the 8th book - Barrington Book Club which I read and listened to. The coming together of characters from previous books was like visiting old friends - characters full of the complexities of life and for some new opportunities in the country community, and so alive. I could envisage in every book the cafe, vets, school, farms, real estate agents and homes.
Generations were well represented from newborn babies, young families, farms and businesses that had been handed down, having experienced and adapting to changing times. Touching on topic of dementia, was described with much sensitivity, and sadly in my experience, very accurate and real.
I loved the how the book club discussed actual books and known authors. It was such a buzz when the bookclub discussed a book I had already read - I wanted to be there, discussing. What a genius! … and any I hadn’t read, have now wish listed.
For those who listened … narrator Lucy Golby very cleverly breaking into an Elvis song 🎶 was pure gold … unexpected and LOL moment.
What was most evident in the writings, Susan Mackie has an outstanding knowledge and expertise in business - weaving new ventures in events management, wine sales, cafe management and rural real estate, property development, generational farms having to adapt to new ways of selling and auctioning online, challenging elderly farmers to think differently.
All so well expressed in emotions, loves and fears. Unputdownable.
The girl-posse meet every month to discuss books, and to chat and share food, coffee and wine. In the twelve months that the story spans, the girls read twelve books and have four babies. They rally around Frances as dementia starts and are there for each other no matter what, even when inconceivable tragedy sends them all reeling.
Millie arrives in town and is welcomed by the community, especially by Finn.
I love this story. It is warm and optimistic, filled with friendship and love and caring. It isn’t just centred on the girl-posse but includes their husbands, children and families, and community.
Wow! What an awesome story, didn’t want it to end. Just loved the way the characters were portrayed and loved the whole small town community vibe of the story and the way each character’s stories flow together. Forming the book club “The Barrington Book Club” where they shared their joys, concerns and welcomed newcomer Millie, and how they cared for dear old Frances also they way they came together in the time of tragedy. Just wonderful. A book that I would highly recommend, I smiled, laughed and cried, Susan just love your writing style.
It was so comforting to be back in Barrington with all the posse women of the town with a little testosterone love thrown in ❤️.
A group of friends decide to start a book club in their small town every month. The Barrington Book Club discusses 12 wonderful authors, which I now have to read.
I loved this line in this book "A prism of our own values."
This book bought out so many emotions, but it was so well written.
Highly recommended 👌
