Burn & Break Duet #2

When Sky Breaks: Burn & Break Duet Book 2

Rate this book
Can the ultimate betrayal be forgiven?

For five years, I’ve thrived.

From my fantastic job to dating someone who encourages me to try new things, I’ve had the strength to cut ties with those who lied and move on.

Or so I thought.

Circumstances out of my control call me back to a place I vowed I’d never to return to…my hometown.

When painful memories resurface and relationships are tested, nothing prepares me for coming face-to-face with the man who claimed to love me then left me.

August shattered my heart and soul and now leaves me wondering if there’s such a thing as too many second chances.

I felt this story in my soul! From the pain, both main characters experienced in childhood to overcoming a separation that kept them apart, to finally admiting where they are in life. This duet makes you feel all of your emotions. I am not afraid to admit that I felt sorrow, grief, I laughed and cried. But I also fell in love with the small town characters. I highly recommend this duet, especially if you need a book that makes you feel like you're in a real-life romance in the stars.

Favorite saying in the book: -----Sometimes, we have to endure the bad to find the good, and life is certainly not without its suffering. But once you find it—the part of life that makes it worth it? You hold on to it and never, ever let it go.

When Sky Breaks definitely leaves you feeling all sorts of emotions and makes you realise what truly is important in your life. August Moore is up there as one of my favourite book boyfriends, his growth, his compassion and what he does to overcome his past is perfection. Sky is also a breath of fresh air especially with what she has overcome in her past. If there is ever two characters you hope for a happy ever after is Sky and August. This is the second book in the Burn and Break Duet and I highly recommend you reading When August Burns first, it finishes on a cliffhanger and When Sky Breaks continues the journey of Sky and August. I also loved hearing about the characters we met in this first book as well. I highly recommend these two books When Sky Breaks and When August Burns.

What a beautiful way to end a duet! Everything about this book was simply beautiful. I don’t want to say goodbye to August and Sky.

With the cliffhanger of book 1 leaving me with some much needed answers and a broken heart, I couldn’t wait to start this book.
5 years have past since Sky had her heartbroken and world turned upside down. I was happy at first to see she tried to move on, but deep down I knew she needed to be with August. And let’s just say that Johnny did NOT give me good vibes from the beginning. Then with the news she gets about Foster she has to go back home to help him. Little did she know that she would have to be facing her past again and not just the memories.

Oh August, I have loved him from the very beginning of book 1. With everything he went through in his childhood and seeing the man he became despite all of that trauma, you just cannot help but love him. Then how he has always been with Sky just swoon. Yes he did something wrong and bad but his intentions were pure. I was happy to see him back in their small town and running Snaps. I was shocked with some of the things he came forward with to Sky about his time away in the 5 years since they last saw each other!

I loved everything about this book, well everything but Johnny lol. I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters but they will hold a special place in my heart!

Oh my goodness! What can I say about this duet other than it was so freakin good!! This book gave me so many feelings and I felt it in my bones. You can feel the pain that August and Sky went through bleeding out of the pages while they were apart for 5 years. Even after 5 years, they both still hold strong feelings for each other (love). August really had his work cut out for him because Sky? She did not forgive easily. She made him earn her forgiveness. That did not deter August.

After 5 years, Sky finds herself back in her hometown with her adopted dad, Foster and her adopted brother, Trek due to Foster being diagnosed with cancer. It's pretty tense between Trek and Sky and Foster knows something "happened" but doesn't know the truth.

Sky finds out that August is permanently living in their hometown and that he owns the photography store he worked at as a teenager. Sky also has a casual relationship with a doctor who works at the same hospital she does. Let me just say, I can't stand his character and I was pretty upset that Sky put up with his crap.

Thank goodness Sky and August get their HEA in this book! Goodbye Doctor Snobby Johnny!

1I truly wish this duet was more than just two books because I am genuinely sad to say goodbye to these characters!

However, I must admit that I absolutely love the way their story ended. The cliffhanger at the end of the first book was heart-wrenching, but this sequel was a refreshing change.

This duet was truly amazing, with August being the perfect book boyfriend and Sky being such a strong and inspiring woman. It was bittersweet to see Sky confront her past after trying to move forward, but deep down, you know that she and August belong together.

I struggle to put into words the range of emotions this duet evokes - it's heartbreakingly beautiful, yet also incredibly healing to witness these characters evolve and heal. These books are truly an experience that you have to live through to fully grasp, and I will definitely be recommending them to anyone willing to listen!

Having read book 1, I couldn’t wait to read book 2 and see how the story continued.

It definitely did not disappoint. There is a time jump of 5 years and can read how the characters are doing. While Sky has moved cities and is seeing someone it quickly becomes evident that she has not completely moved on from what happened in book 1 and is still affecting her currently.

Sky and August do not interact for almost the first third of the book due to two reasons; one being she lives elsewhere but then due to family issues she comes back to her hometown and finding out that August is also back she avoids bumping into him. Of course the town being small that eventually falls through and they interact with one another.

I don’t want to spoil the book so I will say that reading this book was an emotional rollercoaster with the emotional talks and revelations that occur.

Couldn’t stop reading it and definitely recommend reading book 1 and this one as this duet of a story while emotional is an enjoyable read.

This was an exceptionally beautiful way to conclude this duet. I literally felt all the emotions while reading this. I felt the pain, the grief, the happiness and the laughter of these characters and that's when you know something is written so well, because you literally forget you are reading and just feel like that is your reality for the amount of time it takes you to read this story.

This is the definition of what growth and maturing is and it makes you realize what is truly important.

These characters, Sky and August, are truly beautiful and really likeable characters. They went through so much together and apart but they managed to overcome everything for love and for their futures together.

Miss Ashley, you know how to write and this series was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
Thank you!! ❤❤

This is an ARC review and is my honest opinion.

By far my absolute favorite duet EVER and my favorite from this author (sorry daddy P) 😉

My lanta this couple… August… this man Le Sigh the best book boyfriend ever there are not enough stars to show how amazing this story is. The heartache the torment and the anguish this couple goes through is just unbelievable and it’s so beautifully written! Childhood sweethearts that endure such pain blossom through all the trials and tribulations this cruel world deals us. I cried at the end because it was just so perfect for them and they so deserved it.

I really hope one day that I get to see this story play out on the big screen I can’t wait to have this book in my hands! Amazing 10 stars if I could! I highly recommend this duet!

When Sky Breaks is book 2 in the Burn & Break duet and is available now!

This book is an absolutely roller coaster of emotions! It is heartbreaking, but also full of so much love, and hope, and second chances. I absolutely love all of these characters and their growth in this book is so beautiful.

Sky is so strong and she goes through such tragedy with grace and compassion for everyone around her.

August… this man! 🥹 His love for Sky is undeniable and everything he does for her is so sweet and heartfelt.

And then Foster, and Trek, and Phoebe, and Winter 🥰 Every character has a special place in this story and in my heart!

When Sky Breaks is a beautiful ending to this duet and I can’t wait to see what’s next from Ashley 🩷

Book two in the Burn & Break duet. I have not had a book series get me this emotional and this invested in the outcome of a couple’s relationship since the Ravenhood Trilogy. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that this book wraps up everything perfectly. It put all of the broken pieces of my heart back together that were shattered on the floor after book one. The book is very emotional, there’s lots of grief and working through feelings and healing together.

August is honestly one of my top book boyfriends now. The way he cares for people and is so selfless and will always put others before himself just melted my heart. It’s what every girl wants. I am so sad to say goodbye to August and Sky but will for sure be doing a reread every year!

Received as an ARC.

💙 Small town
💙 Brother’s former best friend
💙 Return to hometown
💙 Second chance
💙 Enemies to friends to lovers

And we’re back, now I need time to decompress from what potentially will be one hell of a book slump. You know those books you read that just somehow alter your brain chemistry…..? Yeah this was that for me. I don’t think I’ll be the same again. This was the perfect ending to this duet and I would implore you to read it as soon as you can.

The growth and development of August as a character is beyond what I could have hoped for, it was just perfect. I’ve never wanted a couple to have their HEA as much as I wanted it for August and Sky.

ARC Review

This is the conclusion of the duet so you will get a HEA for August and Sky!

I so enjoyed this story. We were left on a cliffhanger at the end of book 1 but thankfully you don’t have to wait long for book 2 and it’s so worth the read!

August is a beautifully broken character who is devoted to Sky. Sky was hurt but his actions but their growth and also the realisation that life isn’t black and white and people make mistakes was so good.

That shocker at the end too was perfect!!!

I am a total sucker for one and only a and this book hits perfectly!!!

I mean it when I say Ashley Alexander put my heart back together with this second book after she tore me to pieces at the end of the first one, I mean it!

The character development in this is some of the best I’ve read. The way August worked his tail off everyday to show Sky how important she is to him made me fall in love with the man multiple times over. I adore the characters in this book and it will live rent free in my head for a very very long time.

I absolutely loved the conclusion for Sky and August. This is a second chance which I love. It went through real life emotions like she didn't immediately jump to him. She had to work through stuff to get there and I liked that. My favorite second chances are always the ones that follow what we would do in real life, which is work through what we need and not immediately give a second chance. The chemistry was great and it was well written.

Talk about a story that will rip you apart and put you back together. I absolutely loved this book, the feelings throughout the whole duet were raw and passionate. August, all his life, the people who should have been there for him, were never there. And all he ever wanted was for someone to have his back and love him. And with Sky, he was determined to make her see she mattered to him. While Sky had her own issues to work on.
Just such a beautifully written duet!

This series is my favorite of Ashley's so far! She has such a knack for pulling you in and making you feel invested in the characters she creates. I used to write reviews for these books with the qualifier, "I'm not normally a romance reader, but..." However, I think at this point it's safe to say that Ashley HAS turned me into an official romance reader! There's always so much at play in her books and the love story is only just a part of it. The Burn & Break series is no exception, and August and Sky's stories will break your heart (in the best way). There were a few moments in this book that actually made me cry. Highly recommend! ❤️

When Sky Breaks by Ashley Alexander

Burn and Break Duet Book 2

393 Pages

Considering the cliff hanger from book one left me in a crumpled mess, I needed to know what was going to happen next and struggled in the weeks in between, but book 2 follows on flawlessly from the events in book 1,

5 years have passed and a lot has happened, Sky is thriving as a paediatric nurse, casually dating a hot shot Doctor, she has avoided returning home in all this time but something brings her back to Maizeville meaning she has to face her past, whether she wants to or not,

It is so difficult to put into words how great this book is without giving too much away, as I was reading this I could see it playing out as if I was watching it on the telly, my advice would be to read it for yourself and experience all the heartbreak, the love, the angst, the pure adoration between Sky, August and the rest of their friends and family.

Ashley has written a perfect balance of emotions and their journey through the two books is a hard one to muster but ultimately worth every step they both take through the story, Sky and August are a rarity and no matter how much time had passed by they were always on each other’s mind.

For fans of Second Chance, Small Town Romance, Brothers Former Best Friend, and HEAs.

Wow, so many emotions with this one. They both have tragic pasts but still find ways to get through it all for love, and though they both lost people they also both have people in their corner for them as a new family.

Title: When Sky Breaks (Burn & Break Book 2)
Author: Ashley Alexander
Hero/Heroine: August & Sky
What to Expect: Small Town, Second Chance, First Love,

tw/cw: non-fatal cancer, alcohol abuse, mentions of suicide ideation, mentions of suicide,

✨the good ✨

After how the last book ended, I couldn’t wait to see how August and Sky’s story progressed. And I wasn’t disappointed. I mean, who gave August the goddamn right to be that amazing? He raised the standards for fictional men even higher, and they were already pretty high as it was.

It’s five years after the ending of When August Burns and Sky has moved away from Maizeville, wanting to distance herself from everything and everyone who broke her heart. Seeing a prominent doctor from the hospital where she works as a nurse, she’s determined to leave everything in the past and move forward. Until she’s called back home for a devastating reason.

Even though I loved the first book in this duet, I have to say that this one is even better. August and Sky’s story was so heartbreaking at its core, however the key theme of forgiveness was woven so well throughout, I felt like I had heart eyes when I was reading it. The turmoil that each of the characters go through, not just August and Sky, was seriously gut wrenching, however the growth that each of them go through was incredible, and I ended up with the biggest smile on my face toward the end.

I’m not going into too much detail with this review as I wouldn’t want to spoil it, however I will say add this duet to your TBR, you won’t regret it. Absolutely incredible.

✨ the bad ✨

Johnny. There was just something about this bloke I didn’t like. Probably because he wasn’t August, but still.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this to read. This is my honest review.

✨overall thoughts: a wonderful ending to this incredibly addictive duet
✨ 3rd act break up: no
✨ heat level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
✨ star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Where do I even begin?
I mean no review will give this book the justice that it deserves!
Ashley outdid herself with this duet - it's just perfection - one of my top favorite reads of 2024!

The book fast forwards to 5 years later. We see a 23-year-old Sky who is now a pediatric nurse casually dating an oncologist named Johnny. Sky hasn't been to her hometown for 5 whole years because of the one man that broke her heart in high school (August Moore). She gets drawn back to her hometown after finding out that her father is sick. We get to see several old characters from book one again, including Phoebe, Trek, Foster, and most importantly August.

As soon as Sky and August meet again, it's clear to see that they still love each other. The only problem? Sky doesn't forgive him that easily. August redeems himself through and through in this book. There's so much chemistry between these two - it's unreal! I mean, it felt like each page was on fire, and I got to be the witness of it all. All I'm going to say is: Magnolia Parks, Chase's Place, Winter, dates, photography, fall festival, renovating Foster's home.

The first book ends with Sky believing that August caught her house on fire and harmed her brother so she's holding a major grudge against him. Both of them are hurting so much, but they find comfort and heal within each other. It's a beautiful love story. Two broken souls finding each other again!

The ending is absolutely amazing!!! All I want to do is talk about it, but I can't reveal anything (yet). Everyone needs to go and read this book! Ashley deserves all the recognition because this book is incredible!!!

I just know that August Moore and Sky Winters will be floating in my mind for years!

When Sky Breaks by Ashley Alexander

By the time I got to this book I was In a no distraction zone. I waited until the kids were asleep and DEVOURED it! My need to know was in overdrive and I was not disappointed overall! This book!!! The healing and happiness that was so very much needed!!! Full of so many perfect moments both big and small!

The first book leaves you bruised and battered and so freaking emotional. But this book is everything! Still full of so many emotions but so freaking good. It takes place 5 years later. When Sky needs to return home. There is so much healing and growth. From both August and Sky. There's strengthening of their relationship, as well as others, growing into their new roles in eachothers lives. Learning to communicate and respond better. Finding forgiveness. Not forgetting but moving on to find peace. Plus there's all those swoony worthy, angsty and spicy moments in between!

And a very deserving happily ever after for August & Sky. That's not to say I didn't smile til my face hurt, cry my heart out or scream and want to throw my phone. But the ending was worth the rollercoaster ride! This duet is definitely a must read! As heartbreakingly beautiful as it wad I absolutely loved August and Sky and def recommend. 💙
