The Crimsons' is a Thai novella set in this imaginary town, telling the stories of two different women: Anne and Credence. One is a member of the town's most hated circus. The other is a mysterious photographer. What the two have in common is that they're both trying to find their ways under the oppressive circumstances they're trapped in. This is a story about love in times when one can't afford to love, about human survival in times when money is more valued than life. The whole book is basically one explicit critique of capitalism. It's raw. It's thrilling. It's heart-wrenching. As always, LADYS' language is very engaging and beautiful. She's one of my favorite Thai authors for a reason! I really wanted to give this book 5 stars, but I think it is still a tiny bit lacking--just a tiny, tiny bit. The pacing of the first part is a little too slow for my liking. Also, because The Crimsons' is very plot-driven, I feel like it lacks soul at times, if that makes sense? I believe the main charm in LADYS' works is how soulful they all feel, almost like the texts are alive and speaking to the readers directly. I don't feel that with The Crimsons' as much as I did with the author's previous pieces. Nevertheless, this is undoubtedly a well-written novella.
