"Monti's writing is so good! It's super interesting, and I couldn't stop reading it from the start. Whether you're a fan of crime thrillers or simply enjoy a well-told story, this book will satisfy you. Fans of authors like Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen will especially appreciate it."---Online Book Club
"Overall, “Shooting Bogies” is a fun read – a classic Hollywood-style dark comedy/mob story that moves fast and is full of twists. It’s definitely one I’ll listen to again. The narration by Steve Quinn is well done, with no noticeable issues in production. The pacing and delivery are spot on."--The Audiobook Review
When Rocky Delmonico, a big-money golf hustler, attends the funeral of a neighborhood mafioso, he inadvertently disrespects an old-world tradition of the grieving mob family. His life quickly goes awry when he’s told he must make amends. While paying his debt, Rocky gets entangled with ruthless gangsters, callous investment bankers, a treasonous arms dealer, duplicitous agents working for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the CIA—all of whom are playing a role in a murder conspiracy. Shooting Bogies is a page-turning crime thriller and a fast-paced adventure with many twists and turns. It’s a fun and imaginative romp packed with unforgettable scenes and characters.
Ralph Monti is the award-winning author of four non-fiction books, including the widely acclaimed I Remember Brooklyn: Memories From Famous Sons and Daughters. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, Newsday, and The Christian Science Monitor. Shooting Bogies is his first novel.
Shooting Bogies is a quick fun crime read with a golf theme. It's set in New Jersey and involves a cast of characters from the finance world, the mob, and the government.
Rocky Demonic makes a serious mistake at the funeral of an Italian mobster. Soon, he is called to Gino's office, the son of mobster, to explain why he disrespected the family. Before, he knows it he is having to do a job for Gino. Rocky doesn't have any urge to do anything but play golf, even though he's having to do a job for Gino.
I have never read a book by Monti before, but I enjoyed his writing. He had a way that grabbed me in the first chapter and before I knew it, I was halfway through the book. I rated this a 4⭐'s because I felt it was rushed at the end. Other than that, it was a good read and I would read him again.
I won this book through a Goodreads Giveaway. Thanks to Goodreads, and Monti for the E-boik. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Shooting Bogies” is a bright & creative story of the mob, the Fed, and golfing set in New Jersey. It’s full of interesting & witty tales and twists that held my interest from the first paragraph until the end of the book. I was holding my breath to see what happened to Rocky. Ralph Monti is an excellent writer who wove together a story of crime and intrigue occurring in my home state.
Although murder mysteries can be scary, I thought this novel was a fun way to explore the ethnic stereotypes in play in an “old country” neighborhood of the USA.
Shooting Bogies contains enjoyable insight into the world of the mob and the golf world. The realistic plot and character development made this book a page turner.
It’s a solid book similar to Elmore Leonard's good stories. The characters are unique and there’s a couple of great plot developments along the way. My only complaint is once we got to the end it felt a little short but I guess that means I enjoyed the characters!
