A sweeping debut set in paradise, Jessica L. Cozzi’s We’ve Hit Turbulence is a second-chance romance that unpacks the importance of following your heart...even if it means taking some big risks along the way. I rooted for Olive and Tyler at takeoff and cheered when they finally landed. ❤️

This was a really cute and fun YA contemporary by a debut author. I love the idea of exes trapped somewhere (in this case, on a long airplane flight) and forced to confront their feelings.
The book is interspersed with flashbacks of Olive and Tyler’s history together. I really enjoyed seeing how the past affected the present, though I did feel like the book could have used some delineation (ie “then” and “now” above the page break) when there was a hop back in time.
Tyler was a total sweetheart. Why would Olive break up with him? He was fantastic!
This book is also set in Hawaii and I loved seeing Olive explore the island. The book made me want to plan a trip there and the descriptions of all the local food they found was making me hungry!
The relationship between Olive and her mother reminded me a bit of that movie with Hilary Duff, The Perfect Man. So much so that I ended up rewatching the movie while reading this book. The mom in this book was very similar to the mom in that movie, and Olive’s motivations to not fall into the same rut as her mother felt very reminiscent of Hilary Duff’s character in that movie. (That’s high praise, because I really enjoy that movie.)
Overall this was a cute one. Definitely check it out — you will swoon for Tyler and want to plan a Hawaiian vacation!

We've Hit Turbulence is a relatable coming-of-age journey. It explores the complexity of hearts, the fear and consequence of risk, and inspires personal reflection. I had such a lovely time reading this one. It was very reminiscent of many parts of my own adolescence, it almost made me nostalgic but it's truly a happy and very healing love story. I think it's one that will encourage each of us to be brave, honest, and every so often roll the dice in the risks of life.
Olive is flying to Hawaii to surprise her boyfriend at his university (and maybe secretly confirm her fear he's cheating on her). She most certainly isn't expecting to find her plane seat mate to be none other than her ex-boyfriend Tyler. The boy she never quite stopped loving but feared she'd find no future path with. A path that can only end in heartbreak if followed again...or maybe not...
What most impressed me about this work is how much our leads Olive and Tyler truly feel like teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, feeling its burdens, worries, and promise reverberating through the pages. There is an authenticity to their characters that makes every part of this work's journey believable. And highly relatable. I was instantly transported to my own adolescence, and it gave me the vantage point in sincerely understanding both Olive and Tyler. In terms of Tyler, I felt as untethered as he at his age. My path never came clearly, never convincingly enough for me. I was okay in not knowing what my next steps were. Until that feeling became weighted and overwhelming and suddenly I'm in Olive's shoes. Suddenly I understand the importance in decisions, choices, and selections. The weight needed to string that safety net by truly having a plan laid out, because of how much of the fear of failure outweighed all else. And so, I sympathized with Olive protecting herself from future hurt by leaving behind the only boy she's truly loved. She feared heartbreak in the future and didn't dare take the chance at going in blind in their relationship can work or not.
But second chances are a rare opportunity, and it'll be up to Olive to decide if she should take a chance on Tyler, who still so clearly loves her. Can I just say Tyler is such a lovable love interest?! The boy is full of yearning for Olive, and he's also so incredibly forgiving. He could easily be mad at her, turn his back on his, be glad her current boyfriend broke up with her. Instead, Tyler continually shows care towards Olive. Whether it's keeping her warm, offering her a place to stay, encouraging her to take a certain plunge, and ensuring she never forget her worth. He supports her no matter what. Showing far more emotionally maturity than her college (ex-) boyfriend. And Olive takes note, which has her heart going through all sorts of battles against her pragmatic mind. Tyler simply shows up every time he's needed, and invites Olive into her space, softening her fiercely guarded heart. I will say, as much as I understood Olive's hesitation, I did wish she wouldn't circle her hesitation over and over through the narrative. I did feel some frustration, but at the same time, she's a teen! She may be striving to have her own personal answers in life, but she has so much to learn. And learn she will! And that I loved, seeing her reflect, think things through, and finally allow her heart to take the lead. To take a leap as bravely as she did over water.
This is a tale that was nostalgic to me as an older reader and one I think will be highly reflective towards younger audiences. I most certainly recommend!

When she gets on the plane for her 11 hour journey, she finds herself sitting next to the last person she would ever expect, her ex-boyfriend, Tyler. Tyler was the love of her life a few years ago, but they had different goals. But now she's with Jack…Jack who has not responded to her messages. Jack who she was planning on spending the rest of her life with. Jack who is NOT the person sitting on the 11 hour plane ride. Now she has a VERY long plane ride with her past while she heads to find out if Jack is still her future.
I was hooked from the first sentence of this book. Olive immediately had me smiling when reading her inner dialogue and her witty remarks. Tyler was also such a great character who came off as funny and endearing. His compassion and love for Olive was radiating off the page. We've Hit Turbulence is the type of novel you read nce and then don't think about again because there was at no point in this novel that I was truly vibing with it but also I could put it down because it was so cringily adorable? I don't know how to explain it. Tyler (our love interest) was the type of guy who brings you flowers when you are sad and he's such a sweetheart. Our fmc, Olive, was a slightly annoying main character but I didn't hate her.
Overall a cute summer romance that I reccomend you bring on your beach vacation!

Full disclosure: My childhood bestie wrote this book! But honestly, the laughs, smiles, and tears I shed while reading "We Hit Turbulence" are exactly why I adore getting lost in a good story. The emotional journey this book offers is truly unparalleled. I found so much of myself reflected in both Tyler and Olive, and honestly, I now have an overwhelming urge to wrap them in bubble wrap and protect them.
"We Hit Turbulence" shines as a perfect coming-of-age story, beautifully exploring the terrifying truth that loving someone often means surrendering control. Yet, as the book brilliantly shows, sometimes that's the greatest leap of faith you can take. Olive might need a tiny nudge in that direction, but I'm absolutely convinced Tyler is more than up for the challenge.
Seriously, my friendship with Jessica aside, this incredible debut novel alone has cemented her spot as an automatic must buy author for me, no questions asked. I'm already impatiently waiting for her next novel!

I am REALLY against second chance trope. I didn't realize it was one before starting it. Once I realized, it was too late, and I was too into the story. Olive is flying alone for the first time to visit her long-distance boyfriend, who has been acting a bit weird for a while. Last thing, she wants to see is her ex-boyfriend, Tyler, sitting next to her. 13 hours of flight is long enough to reflect on old mistakes and feelings and make some confession under the fear of turbulence.
Olive was such a relatable protagonist, young, flawed, and honest about her fears. I really connected with how she struggled between wanting control and being afraid to take another risk on love. Her train of thought and stubbornness make complete sense given her history, never at any point do I think she is being unreasonable or stupid. And Tyler? He’s the kind of soft, mature, and quietly devoted love interest that makes your heart ache a little. Their connection felt real and age-appropriate. Another positive thing is clear communication, whether it is between friends or family, which makes the story more real and relatable.
The Hawaii setting was dreamy and perfect as a backdrop for this story. It’s the kind of book that reminds you that you can relate to any character and life choices, no matter how different they are from you.

I started not realizing that this is YA but finished not caring either way. This is the second chance romance of a first love that went wrong but for also the wrong reasons. When seated together on a long flight, these two ex's begin to work out their stuff. He is so far gone for her that it made me just gobble up this story for more of Tyler. Watching Olive figure her stuff out while also sorting out her view of her mother was super rewarding. I love that they had to work for it and I love that we got the whole picture of how their relationship impacted their friend group as well. This is a solid debut and I am so excited to read what Cozzi gives us next.

There has been a drought of YA contemporary romance lately and so I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of this book.
Olive is on her way to Hawaii to see her boyfriend Jack who has not been responding to her texts lately. But when her seat mate arrives on the airplane she discovers it’s her ex boyfriend Tyler.
I’m a sucker for books set in Hawaii. I will admit I was a little bummed that more than half of the book takes place on the airplane. I would’ve liked a little more of Hawaii. But the Hawaii moments were great and loved all the places they went.
It was a quick entertaining read and I finished it in two days. Definitely check it out if you are looking for a funny and heartfelt second chance romance. Thank you NetGalley and Delacorte for an ARC.

Jessica Cozzi imbues her writing and characters with so much heart, soul, and warmth that it’s basically impossible not to smile while you read. This was such an easy and enjoyable read and I’m so looking forward to reading it again!!

𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭: When Olive boards a flight to Hawaii expecting a peaceful trip to see her long-distance boyfriend, she’s forced into an unexpected reunion with her ex, Tyler: sparking old feelings, unearthing past heartbreak, and leaving her questioning where her heart will land once the plane does.
𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: For something with such a cute and happy cover this book was surprisingly emotional.
Olive is such a vivid, fully realized main character. She’s an anxious over-thinker with Big Feelings, and I loved her for it. Her constant second-guessing and internal monologues were so relatable, and her internal voice is so well written that by the end, I felt like I really knew her. And Tyler is the definition of a golden retriever MMC. He’s hopelessly obsessed in the sweetest way, endlessly patient, and so clearly in love it hurts.
Olive’s journey with her mother was one of my favorite parts. It’s messy in a very real teen way—trying to understand a parent while still trying to understand yourself—and incredibly rewarding to read. The friendships also feel true to the YA space: supportive, complicated, and such a huge part of Olive’s growth.
The setting is another standout. The airplane scenes are fun, but the Hawaii trip is where the book really shines. So immersive and the perfect backdrop for Olive figuring out her own heart.
It’s definitely more character-focused than plot-driven, so it starts a little slow, but the emotional payoff is absolutely worth it. If you love YA romances that take their time, dig deep, and leave you giggling by the end, this one delivers.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: For something with such a cute and happy cover this book was surprisingly emotional.
Olive is such a vivid, fully realized main character. She’s an anxious over-thinker with Big Feelings, and I loved her for it. Her constant second-guessing and internal monologues were so relatable, and her internal voice is so well written that by the end, I felt like I really knew her. And Tyler is the definition of a golden retriever MMC. He’s hopelessly obsessed in the sweetest way, endlessly patient, and so clearly in love it hurts.
Olive’s journey with her mother was one of my favorite parts. It’s messy in a very real teen way—trying to understand a parent while still trying to understand yourself—and incredibly rewarding to read. The friendships also feel true to the YA space: supportive, complicated, and such a huge part of Olive’s growth.

This was a fun little coming of age and opposites attract, second chance romance story.
It was broken down into three sections. First, Olive is on her way to visit her boyfriend at college in Hawaii. He’d been ghosting her so she decided to surprise him (what could possibly go wrong with that plan?) She finds herself on a 13 hour flight next to her ex-boyfriend, Tyler. The second part was Olive’s time in Hawaii, and the third was once she returned home.
I enjoyed the first part the most. It was full of witty banter and bickering as Olive recalls her relationship with Tyler and tries to deal with having to interact with him two years after she broke his heart. As the story progressed though, it really slowed down. I really liked Olive at first, but she got to be a lot.
Olive’s insistence to herself that her and Tyler didn’t work because they were “too different,” didn’t entirely make sense to me. The author did a great job trying to explain it, but it got to the point where enough was enough and the story dragged a bit over the repetitive thoughts.
Overall, I did enjoy it, I just think some of it could have been cut down a little.

This YA romance is such a cute, charming, and inspirational read, for not only teens, but also for people of all ages. It reminds us what really matters in life, in relationships, and in the power of it never being too late for second chances. Light, heartwarming, and hilarious, this is the perfect beach read, or read for any time, truly!
Coming from a type A girly myself, who is obsessed with her planner (and has been since high school), I really think this will resonate with a lot of teenagers who try to have their whole lives planned out ahead of them, and sometimes, watch all those well-made plans fall apart. I know I related to it, even though I'm almost 10 years past my teens now.
Oh, and Tyler Ferris is such a sweetheart... an A+ stand up guy. Who would do anything for anyone he loves.
He is the epitome of boyfriend material for young loves / first loves.

Long haul flight next to your ex? It’s like Snakes on a Plane anxiety in a different font.
This was a super cute YA romance, especially for a debut! Olive is an anxious over-thinker with big feelings. Tyler is the textbook yearning, hopelessly down bad boy who seems to know her better than she knows herself, at times.
The little plane moments made me giggle. I loved their cute Hawaii adventures (even though, come on Olive, stay the full vacay!), and the narrative here (a mix of present and flashbacks) worked really well for me. Olive’s baggage as regards her mom’s dating life made sense for how she viewed her own romantic life.
It read a big younger than my usual YA, but would be so, so good for a younger audience. High School me would have been even more all over this.

Oh, my heart. Usually I don’t read YA romcoms because they’re full of dumb ass kids in ways that other YA books are not. But I 100% saw Olive’s side AND they both opened their mouths and communicated AND it wasn’t a stupid reason for a breakup.
The only reason I didn’t give it a full five stars was because I wish there had been a little bit more of the end- it felt a little TOO fast for her to suddenly realize her mistakes and it was a short book, so it definitely could’ve been extended to make it feel more earned. I’m sure it’ll come off-page in a longer convo, but I didn’t think they talked enough about the compromise aspect.
I loved Olive and Tyler though and I was rooting like hell for them to get back together. Read this!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jessica, the author, in NYC and she is just as sweet as this second chance romance. I adored Tyler and the way he cared for Olive. She had a few things to work through and he gave her space, but was ready to be there when she needed him. Olive didn't recognize her feelings as easily and I loved the glimpses into the past to see what their relationship was like the first time around. The audiobook, narrated by Shannon Tyo, is the perfect way to enjoy this young adult love story and escape to Hawaii along with the characters.
