Someone is trying to kill me.

For weeks, I’ve been receiving letters at my club with the same warning: they’re coming for me.

And they’re leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.

When my ex—a high-profile senator—says he’s flying in an experienced detective to handle the case, the last thing I expect is a cocky, condescending jerk who I can’t seem to take my eyes off of.

Anderson Brooks is the worst person for the job, and now we have to work together to attempt to lure the murderer out, by putting on a show at my exclusive adult club.

The line between lust and hate is thin, and we blur it like watercolors on a canvas.

Neither of us wants to work with each other.

Now, if we could stop ending up in bed together, that would be great.

𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬

I have no respect for women who sell themselves for money.

Carmela Lane doesn’t just do that—she runs an entire underground adult club for it.

I get called to New York when she starts getting threats from someone who’s murdering members of her club. I’m supposed to keep her safe, but the fact that we despise each other doesn’t make it easy.

Neither does the fact that we can’t seem to stop tearing each other’s clothes off.

With her life on the line, it’s a race to catch the killer.

That is if we don’t end up killing each other first.

Play With Me is the third book in the Angels of Désirer series, which is an interconnected stand-alone series. It can be read alone. This book deals with heavy themes and possibly triggering content. Please check the warnings.

MCs: carmela lane (cabrera) ♡ anders brooks

Time is a selfish temptress. She always leaves us wanting more of her .

💭 this is my 1st read of DLD & will def not be my last. im normally not into cheating (tho off page & not between mc's), but it def gave much MUCH drama to the story, which eventually led to carmela & anders' meeting. she owns a shmex club & needed security detail after someone's apparently tryna unalive her; he got the job coz of his detective background. i found the title fitting coz ooof !! did they play HARD!! & when i say "play", i meant:

1. solid cat & mouse trope
2. the SPICE !!

🎧 the narrators gave such an entertaining performance in this duet narration. janine granda was full of passion & very sensual, while robert hatchet... goodness !! the timber of his voice was juz so deep & soothing🫠 they made the spice 💯spicin🔥

book 3 of Angels of Désirer series with interconnected characters but can be read as a standalone

dark contemporary romance | romantic suspense | detective/bodyguard x madame/club owner | hate to love | shmex club | age gap | fake dating | who done it? | stalkr | serial unaliver | found fam

Welcome back here, everybody to another audiobook review! So I had such an amazing time listening to this book! I thought the banter and tension between Anders and Carmela was just perfect. I loved the back-and-forth between them with Anders basically being like I don’t wanna touch you and I can’t stand you in the line of work you do but in his head he’s like I really want to be with you and I really want to touch you and then Carmela she’s basically like I hate you and you don’t know anything about me and in her head she’s thinking the same thing as Anders, she was just like I really just want to be with you too. It’s just amazing banter intention me and my friend Summer have basically come to the conclusion that Carmela is the long lost sister of Rachel from the Devils disciple series just by the way Carmela acts throughout this story. But like the tension and the yearning is just as good as the banter because like you can tell it’s there in every chapter between Carmela and Anders and you just want them to be together finally. But I had an absolutely great time, listening to this from Blue Nose AUDIO. Our two narrators Robert and Janine did absolutely amazing jobs and I’m super glad that this got to be my first time listening to both of them because they just absolutely knocked this audiobook out of the park . Like if I could actually rate higher than just 5 Stars, this would definitely be like a six star read!!! like this is beyond amazing, I had such a phenomenal time listening to it and I really can’t wait to go by to listen to book one of the series because I have gotten to listen to book 2 obviously this is book three and I get to listen to book 4.

Play with me by DL Darby is book 3 in the Angels of Desirer Saga. Yes, yes, yes, yes!!! This story is simply a chef’s kiss! D.L. Darby has delivered once again a brilliant story, her writing is just honey, she is so smooth. The FMC, Carmela she is a spitfire that you will fall in love with. She is a WOMAN, fierce, independent, strong, brave and absolutely amazing. She is also in her thirties. Her story has so much depth and the background is built so well through the story. If you read the other 2 books you have already gotten glimpses of her, i loved her voice and then I absolutely love her even more now.
Andres, our MMC, after a one-night stand took me a while to warm up to him, but oh boy did he make my blood boil with desire. He is the perfect man, with a very well-crafted past, and trauma. There were moments when I didn’t see him redeemable, however D.L. Is such a good writer, building, explaining, and character developing. Andres is for sure one of my favourites book BF.

Audiobook: narrated in duet style by Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet. Janine absolutely nailed Carmela, her accent was so on point, she grasped every single aspect of Carmela’s personality, played perfectly on her vulnerabilities and there was such a perfect difference between her younger self and her present. Robert made Andres shine through his story, his voice cadence worked perfectly on Andres emotions and personality. Everything was highlighted by his self-judgment, his anxiety, his caring and protective nature, and his passion. Both of them are fantastic storytellers and created an absolute masterpiece together, that will keep you hooked through the story.
Blue Nose Audio has produced this book, and it is just magical how well they blend and create these duets, which are perfection!

4/5 Stars – 3/5 Spice – Book 3 in the Angels of Desirer Series

Tropes –
Workplace romance, forced proximity, suspenseful, dominance power struggle, touch her and die, whodunit, found family, fake relationship, mutual pining, and exhibitionism!!

Holy crap where do I even start on this wonderful story? This was a great third installment to the Angels of Desirer series, and omg, I love Carmela so freaking much!! Also, can I just say that I love how she owns a high-profile sex club (you go girl!) but when her life is threatened, her ex-hires Anders who is a detective from California and he goes on the mission of finding out who is threatening Carmela…. This then takes a small turn, and we find out it’s the guy she hooked up with and just can’t get out of her mind. But when he learns who she really is, he tries to convince himself that he wants nothing to do with her…. But the attraction between the two is so damn electric! This story consisted of so much drama, spice, and ooo some wonderful suspense that it all led to an amazing read. Overall, this is a wonderful installment in this interconnected series but yes, all books can be read as a standalone, you will just have to play a little clue game in finding out who did it, but I can say you won’t want to miss this read.

Talk about plot twists and turns! Just when I thought I knew everything about this series, the author goes and throws plot twist after plot twist my way — and I loved every moment of it from beginning to end.

Darby created such an incredible universe that gives you different stories with each book, yet they’re all still within the same universe. For me, it felt like this was the perfect way to bring every story and every character together — to tie up stuff from the beginning all the way to the end, if that makes sense.

There’s tension, there’s spice (of course), there’s a plot twist — like I already mentioned — and there’s mystery, romance, and found family, amongst other things. It’s just fan-freaking-tastic! The Angels of Désirer series is something that will keep you very entertained and on your toes, while still letting you enjoy the stories and fall in love with the characters.

It’s a standalone that can be read on its own; however, to get the full experience of this one, it’s best to start with the first book in the series (Burn With Me). Each character in this is amazing — they make you laugh, they make you cry, they make you gasp — you name it! Which is why I feel it’s best to read the series in order, even if you choose to read this as a standalone. It’s still very enjoyable, and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s into dark romance, workplace romance, and suspense, amongst other things.

You want spice? It has spice.
You want drama? It has drama.
You want fun, cute moments? It has them! You want banter? It has that and more!

Carmela and Anders know how to push each other’s buttons and yet still give us exactly what we want as readers. The author does a great job of moving forward with the series and making each story its own, while still giving you familiar characters. The story stands on its own, the character growth is amazing, and the twists and turns will keep you on your toes for sure.

And the narration Of course it’s phenomenal! Janine and Robert are a great duo when it comes to narration — they truly nailed this one.

Yes, I would definitely recommend you add this to your list and start it immediately!

Thank you Blue Nose Audio and the author for the opportunity to be a part of this ALC team.

As always, these are my honest thoughts and words for my review.

I was down to read when I found out the FMC-Carmela ran a high-profile sex club. When her life is threatened, her ex hires Anders, a detective from California to find who is threatening her. It’s the same guy she hooked up with the night before and the one she couldn’t stop thinking about. But when he learns who she really is he tries to convince himself he wants nothing to do with her. The attraction between these two is electric. So much drama, spice and suspense made this such a great read. This is the third book in the interconnected series that can be read as a standalone. This book will have you playing clue to figure out who did it. You won’t want to miss this read.

I read this book on my kindle when it came out and LOVED it. So when I had the opportunity for an ALC, I jumped on it.

The story: 10/10
The narrators?: 10/10

Anders and Carmella are chefs kiss, and their banter and chemistry is off the charts. I loved watching… listening to?…their love bloom throughout the story, and liked that we didn’t jump from “I hate you” to “I love you” in the blink of an eye. Don’t get me wrong, there is spice all up in this book (she’s the madame of a sex club, so, duh). And honestly, hate sex is so fun to read, I might like it more than the lovey dovey stuff.

This series as a whole is a 10/10, but Carmella and Anders will always hold a special place in my heart.

This book was **Chef's Kiss**

Law and Order meets Sex & The City in the most delicious book by DL. Darby.

Carmela is a fiery badass who holds back nothing. She is fierce, stands up for what she believes in and protects everyone she loves.
I loved getting to know her back story with Mick who we meet in books 1 & 2. I never liked him and I never will.

Anders... OH Anders... he really is the definition of 'let him warm up to you'. Because if there is anything you'll learn about Anders is he's FROZEN before he becomes VOLCANIC!

The inevitable chemistry between those two.. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Carmela is a dominating badass and she definitely got Anders to bend the knee..

This WHOLE series is just perfection, with each book getting better, spicier and with slightly darker plot lines.

I can't wait to see what DL comes out with next 😜

Play with me is the 3rd book in the Angels of Desirer series by D.L. Darby. This books features our favorite adult club owner Carmela & a new sexy detective named Anders, I really enjoyed reading an advance arc due to being on her street team. Anders is a mouthy cocky guy who Carmela has 0 problem putting in his place. When Carmela starts receiving threats at the club Anders is brought in to find out what is going on. However they hate each other but they can’t deny the sizzling chemistry between them. As they keep falling in bed together their feelings get more and more intense, will Anders catch who’s threatening Carmela before they get her? Overall this story was 5 stars for me!

Play With Me
Angels of Désirer Book 3
By: D.L. Darby
Narrated by: Janine Granda, Robert Hatchet

I have been loving the “Angels of Désirer” series, and D.L. Darby has outdone herself with her third addition to the series, “Play With Me” a thrilling dark romantic suspense, that hooks you right from the start, becomes your obsession, for the need to know what happens next. I found Carmela, the owner and head angel of Club Désirer, to be an intriguing character and was looking forward to her story, and wow, what a story it is. With flashbacks to the past, we learn what brought her to running an adult entertainment club, and about the man in her life who disappointed her younger self and continues to do the same in her present life. Someone is sending Carmela threatening notes, and they stepped up their game by sending those notes with dead bodies, in her club, that someone infiltrated the club undetected. To help with the investigation, they bring in a detective from California, for his discretion and expertise. Anders Brooks arrived the night before their meeting and wound up having a steamy encounter with a bombshell of a woman, the same woman he was to meet the next day, Carmela. Once Anders found out who Carmela was and what she did, he was just downright rude and judgmental, but Carmela had dealt with jerks like him before and gave as good as she got. He wound up staying to handle the investigation despite protests from both sides, and once he opened his eyes to see what Carmela and the club did for others, he changed his tune. The chemistry between those two was electric, loved the push and pull and the banter between them, and before I knew it, I was rooting for these two. There are many layers to this story, and it was amazing to watch it all unfold, from secrets revealed, to the twists and turns, to trying to figure out who was behind the threats and wondering what was going to happen next. There is so much more, including non-stop drama, angst, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. I loved the direction the author took her characters in the end, and it was great to see the characters from the earlier books make appearances too. D.L. Darby, thank you for this incredible story and wild ride.

🎧📚🎧And for the incredible audiobook production performed by the perfectly cast voice artists, Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet. They did an amazing job bringing these characters to life, giving each a voice that was fitting for a perfect portrayal of each. Granda absolutely nailed it as Carmela, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her vulnerabilities in her younger years to the witty and fierce woman she became. Hatchett did the same for Anders and was just as amazing with showcasing all aspects of his personality, from his angsty, judgmental self to his caring and protective self. Both were fantastic at performing the roles of all the side and secondary characters, too. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to, and their captivating performance keeps you hooked to the story.

The Spicy Librarian's Review: Play With Me by D.L. Darby

D.L. Darby's Play With Me, the third installment in the Angels of Désirer series, is a sizzling blend of romantic suspense, hate-to-lust, and forced proximity that manages to feel like Law and Order meets Sex & The City. It throws a fierce, independent club owner and a judgmental detective together in a race to catch a killer, resulting in an explosive clash of wills and an undeniable attraction that makes for an addictive read.

The Anatomy of Tension
The plot hinges on a premise dripping with tension: Carmela Lane, the fierce, thirtysomething owner of the exclusive adult club Désirer, is receiving death threats linked to a trail of bodies. Her solution? Her senator ex-boyfriend hires Anders Brooks, a detective from California, to go undercover and find the killer. The problem? Anders is cocky, condescending, and judges Carmela for her profession, while Carmela finds him an infuriating jerk.
The central conflict is the electric, sizzling chemistry that exists despite their mutual contempt. They are forced to work together, and put on a show at the club to lure the murderer out, and in the process, they can't stop tearing each other’s clothes off. This blurring of the line between hate and lust is the engine of the story, creating a delicious dominance power struggle and thrilling mutual pining that keeps the reader hooked.

The Characters: Fire and Ice

Carmela (The Queen): Is a spitfire, and fierce, independent, and strong, Carmela is a compelling FMC who owns her sexuality and her business. I loved the depth of her backstory and the way she stands up for what she believes in. She's a dominating badass who has no problem putting Anders in his place, making her the perfect counter to his arrogance.
Anders (The Detective): Anders starts off as the ultimate jerk—rude, ignorant, and highly judgmental of Carmela and her club. He’s the definition of “let him warm up to you." However, he's also a man with a well-crafted past and trauma, and his initial coldness gives way to a volcanic passion, caring, and protective nature. The journey of seeing him bend the knee and shed his judgment is a huge payoff.

Beyond the Spice: Suspense and Heart

While the book delivers on spice and electrifying chemistry, the plot is equally strong. It features a genuine whodunit mystery that keeps the reader guessing with secrets revealed and unexpected twists. The story also digs into heavy themes, exploring Carmela’s complex past and the emotional trauma that shaped both her and Anders.
Ultimately, Play With Me is a testament to the transformative power of love and acceptance. It’s a story about a man learning to look past his prejudices to see the strong woman underneath and two people, both broken by the world, finding a bond that could withstand a deadly threat.

"Play With Me" by D.L. Darby is a thrilling, seductive dive into the world of Carmela Lane, the owner of New York City's exclusive underground adult club, Désirer. When her life is threatened, her silent partner, Senator Mick Charles, hires top detective Anders Brooks to investigate the murders linked to the club. Carmela is a fiercely independent woman who has fought her way to the top, refusing to let anyone or anything bring her down. Her defiant attitude towards the threats against her life underscores her strength and resilience. Anderson Brooks, a California native recovering from a traumatic experience, is reluctantly pulled into the case. His first night in New York is marked by a passionate encounter with a fiery woman he meets in a restaurant, only to discover the next day that she is none other than Carmela Lane, the woman he's been hired to protect.

Initially repelled by the nature of Carmela's club, Anders feelings evolve as he becomes increasingly drawn to her. Despite his initial disgust, he cannot stay away from her, and his protective instincts kick into high gear. Their relationship intensifies as the threat grows, and Anders is determined to keep Carmela safe. Carmela, however, harbors secrets she is reluctant to share, fearing vulnerability. Anderson pushes her to reveal these secrets, believing it is the only way he can truly protect her. But Anders is not without his own hidden past, adding another layer of complexity to their relationship.

In conclusion, I gave this book 5 stars as D.L. Darby masterfully blends suspense and romance, creating a story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The chemistry between Carmela and Anders is electric, and their evolving relationship is both passionate and fraught with tension. The looming danger from the killer, who becomes increasingly bold, adds a relentless urgency to the narrative. "Play With Me" is a captivating read that explores themes of trust, protection, and the transformative power of love amidst danger. Darby's engaging writing and well-developed characters make this book a standout in romantic suspense. Readers will be enthralled by Carmela and Anders journey, eagerly turning pages to discover if they can overcome their secrets and survive the deadly threat targeting them.

Play with Me is a perfect title for this book because D.L. Darby definitely played with our emotions. I was captivated right from the start and was constantly grasping what is going to happen next to our beloved Carmela.

Carmela and Anderson's story is definitely a push and pull of love and hate. On Anderson's first night in New York, he just so happens to meet Carmela in a bar and things get spicy from there. His next day he goes to the police station to meet with the fellow detectives and his supposed to be client he needs to help. To his surprise it happens to Carmela, and he is livid. He assumes the worst of her and is very rude and ignorant without knowing and understanding the situation. Carmela has been receiving death threats and people have shown up unalive at her club Desire and she needs the help. Now he must protect her and solve this while leaving his person feelings aside.

Anderson was one of those characters that you hated at first but made it up over time. He past is heartbreaking just like Carmelas. I suspected there was more to her and Mick's story from the glimpses we got in the other books but what D.L. delivered was like nothing I suspected. Their past is so much more complicated and heartbreaking than I would have thought. Carmela is a strong badass female and deserves the world for everything she's been through.

The suspense and the what's going to happen next will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what D.L. will throw at us next. And we can't forget about the spice. It was just the right amount in ways that built sexual tension for the characters and built our anxiousness on wanting it to happen. Everything was beautifully put together and I couldn't have asked for a better book. Even if D.L. played with our emotions will all the suspense, drama, heartbreak and mouth dropping moments. I can honestly say it was worth getting lost in this world at night and not even realize the sun was rising when I finished. I can't wait to see what happens next in the crazy adventure.

Anderson and Carmela Story

Carmela:
Someone is trying to kill Her…
For weeks she has been receiving the same letters at the club…. Letters saying they’re coming for her.
And they’re leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.
But then her Ex… the Senator introduced a cocky tattooed condescending Detective.. one who made his way into her cab the night before…
One who made sure just how much he detest her. Anderson Brooks, and now they must put on a show to catch the killer.

Anders:
called to New York for a case, but then met the most beautiful woman.. one he couldn’t forget until Carmela Lane turned out to be his case.
She starts getting threats from someone who’s murdering members of her club.. he’s supposed to keep her safe, but getting involved with her is not what should’ve happened, because all it would do is make his focus disappear.

💭
but the fact that they both seem to despise each other was all lies they told themselves..
Neither does the fact that they can’t seem to keep their hands to themselves. But as things get out of hand where another body is found even more gruesome than the other bodies Carmela life is definitely on the line, and it’s a race to catch whoever the killer is, as things began to change between her and Anders just as he discovered what else she has to hide apart from her involvement with the Senator and the club security.

Secrets revealed, Who done it intrigue, and one sexy dirty mouth Detective!

Play With Me, the third instalment in D.L. Darby's Angels of Désirer series, is a gripping dark romantic suspense novel that captivates readers from the outset. The story centres around Carmela, the enigmatic owner of Club Désirer, whose past and present collide in a tale of intrigue and passion. As threatening messages escalate to include dead bodies left at her club, Carmela finds herself entangled in a dangerous mystery. Enter Anders Brooks, a California detective known for his discretion, who is drawn into the investigation. Their initial encounter is one hot night that the two of them would love to repeat, however, this quickly sours when Anders casts harsh judgement about Carmela’s work/lifestyle. Anders’ judgmental stance is quickly challenged as he learns more about Carmela and the club's mission. The chemistry between Carmela and Anders is electrifying, and their dynamic is filled with tension and banter that keeps readers engaged. As secrets unravel and the suspense heightens, the narrative unfolds with unexpected twists and emotional depth. Darby masterfully weaves drama, romance, and suspense, delivering a story that is as thrilling as it is heartfelt.
The audiobook is a testament to the power of skilled voice artists, with Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet delivering truly remarkable performances. Granda breathes life into Carmela, capturing her evolution from a vulnerable youth to a witty and fierce woman with impeccable nuance. Her ability to embody Carmela's multifaceted personality makes for a deeply engaging listening experience. On the other hand, Hatchet excels in portraying Anders, deftly conveying his complex journey from angsty and judgmental to warmth and protectiveness. Their dynamic storytelling also extends to the diverse array of side and secondary characters, ensuring that each voice enhances the narrative's depth and richness. Together, these talented performers make the audiobook an irresistible auditory journey, leaving listeners eagerly anticipating each twist and turn of the story.

D.L. Darby has created a seductive and ravishing world with Angels of Desirer. This series has remarkable story lines and characters, and gets into sensitive topics in a tasteful and respectful manner, all while giving readers the "down and dirty" we've come to love from this series and her exceptional writing.

I was eagerly looking forward to Carmela's story because the little glimpses we were given in Burn With Me and Lie With Me let me know she was going to be complex and there was going to be so much more buried beneath her hard exterior. Her meet cute (if that's what we can even call that explosion) with Anders, and his introduction into the story was like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Their connection and instant attraction let me know I better hunker down because I was about to go on a ride.

Carmela's ex, Mitch, hires Anders to investigate the murders at the club and the notes Carmela is being left. That decision ended up sealing his fate in more ways than one, as well as Anders and Carmella's fate. The love/hate, push/pull between Anders and Carmela will burn up your pages. Their dynamic is written to perfection. I found myself wanting to kick Anders between the legs, and then getting on my knees to kiss it better.

The mystery and suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out whodunit while the spice will have you hot and bothered. Play With Me was an addictive blend of emotions, spice, twist & turns, mystery and intrigue, and the fateful conclusion and HEA that makes for a 5 star read that can be enjoyed again and again.

The emotional growth in Carmela and Anders both individually and together forged a bond between them that could not be broken.

I absolutely devoured this book and highly recommend not only this installment but the entire series.

The Luca teaser at the end...Oh my! We are in for another sinfully epic ride when that novella drops.

I wish that I could properly put into words how I feel about this series. All three books were amazing. I was anxiously waiting for this one because I just knew it was going to stress me out. The freaking drama... but it was so good!

Anders, who was called from Cali to New York, because of his previous reputation as a special agent, to work a case involving a woman's life being threatened. Not just any woman, but the woman we've come to know as the owner of Désirer, a new take on an adult club. Little does he know that she's the woman he hooks up with on his first night in NY, meeting her the next morning as his new job assignment. Carmela is fierce and feisty. She's bold and puts on a front of always being strong and not taking crap from anyone.. anyone but Mick anyway. It's easy not to like him. He's rich, entitled, and takes advantage of his power over other people. While we see more of him throughout this book, I feel bad for him during the flashbacks to when they were younger, but he's too manipulative to feel that bad for him.

The banter and 'hate' between Carmela and Anders were written to perfection. The sexual and emotional tension were both there the whole time, with softer moments thrown in. I was surprised at how well he kept up with her, and even more surprised at the way he wrestled her for the control they both thought they needed. In my opinion, this book was unpredictable and full of surprises. Between the murders and the notes with roses left behind, the 'whodunit' aspect had you suspicious of multiple people, but then you wanted to believe the good in them. By the end of the book, everything falls into place, and you aren't left with a bunch of questions... well, until you get to Luca's chapter that gives you a preview of the novella that comes next.

ALC Review

Play With Me by DL Darby is an addictive listen, I did not want to get it out of my earbuds. Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet are two voices I trust to deliver any story, and this dark romance didn’t disappoint.

Carmela and Anders are brought together by danger, and fake situationship their way to an HEA that had me cheering. Carmela has danger on her doorstep by way of a complicated partnership and when Anders Brooks is hired on as security detail, well; their fiery friction burns hot and fast as they bicker like enemies and fall into each other like long lost lovers.

Janine Granda oozes strength and confidence as a feisty Carmela. She had my jaw on the floor the entire listen. Janine is simply decadent: her voice is rich, sultry and full-bodied. Carmela has had to make hard choices and has hustled hard to get where she is — and Janine delivers so much power. Her inflection and accent, at the flip of a switch, can be loving or lethal, with a steady desperation and passion that had me absolutely melting. She gave this hard shell of a woman her soft edges and she felt so real to me.

Robert Hatchet is brilliant as a man who has witnessed and experienced his own tragedy, only to become Carmela’s protective partner at the club. Anders Brooks is hardened by his job as a detective who is ready to hang it all up, and he accepts the job that brings him to New York and to Carmela. Robert is effortlessly cool and calculating as the seasoned detective, yet showcases the dominant and seductive side of Anders with a romantic and swoon-worthy style. I knew I’d be rooting for him, and Robert delivered.

This book has a little bit of everything and the actors provide a whole lot of depth. The performances really give the story its magic — and Janine and Robert in duet feel like a seductive dance between their two characters in your earbuds.

Now I need to go back and listen to the previous books (though, as I’m known to do, jumping in at book three did not take away from my understanding of the story).

You absolutely need to pick up Play with Me—it’s a total chef's kiss and utterly brilliant! This thrilling dark romantic suspense introduces Carmela, a fierce, independent spitfire who owns a high-profile sex club, and Andres, the detective hired to protect her after dead bodies start turning up at her business. The drama kicks off with a scorching one-night stand that immediately backfires when the judgmental Andres learns her identity and casts judgment. Their enemies-to-lovers push-and-pull is electric, fueled by high-stakes forced proximity, non-stop drama, and thrilling suspense. Watching this masterful redemption arc is delicious; Andres transforms from a rude skeptic into a fiercely protective man who finally confronts his own trauma, proving that a hero you initially find irredeemable can become your absolute favorite. Darby's smooth writing beautifully explores Carmela's deep, complex past and her resilience, ensuring you root for her every step of the way.

The entire experience is elevated by the duet audiobook narration, which is sheer perfection and makes this book an absolute must-listen. Janine Granda completely nails Carmela's voice, accent, and spitfire personality, grasping every aspect of her vulnerability and fire. Robert Hatchet is equally amazing, expertly conveying Andres's intense emotion, angsty inner turmoil, and ultimate protective passion. This production by Blue Nose Audio is an immersive masterpiece that highlights the electric chemistry and suspense, ensuring you stay hooked through every single twist and turn. If you crave intense romantic suspense with a strong heroine, a beautiful redemption arc, and fantastic spice, drop everything and pick this up!

“You know, I don’t think I like it when your eyes are on another woman. You’re supposed to be guarding me like a good doggy, not looking for the next bitch in heat you want to mount”.

🔎 fake dating
🔎 forced proximity
🔎 dominance power struggle
🔎 touch her and die
🔎 mutual pinning

I want to start by thanking D L Darby for allowing me to read the 3rd book in the Angels of Désirer series. Again you have absolutely smashed it and I loved it! Ps I’m obsessed with the “doggy” references and the collars omg don’t get me started 🤤

Carmela, head of the Désirer (adult club), has been receiving death threats and bodies have been showing up. Mick, her partner in crime calls in the big guns and hires a detective from California. On a night out Carmela sleeps with a random man and leaves. Only to find out the next day that he is the hired detective. The hate they both show to one another is like no other. How can she work along side someone who would “never” touch a sex worker.

Anders, the hired detective, almost never participates in a one night stand. But boy is the one night stand he has the best. As his off to his new job after working behind a desk for years, he comes to find the amazing lay to be his client. Once he realises she’s a sex worker he takes back the thought of having another night with her.

“Don’t you dare take those fucking panties off. This is me marking my territory.”

The mutual hate between these two is fire! I absolutely couldn’t put this book down and the crime aspect of the book just hit! If you haven’t read any of D L Darbys books you have to go experience the Angels of Désirer novels!

I think this might be my favorite in the Angels of Désirer series so far! This time we dive into Carmela’s story, the woman behind Désirer, and finally get to see what shaped her into the powerhouse she is. We get a glimpse into her past and how she met Mick, and honestly… my heart broke for everything she went through with him. He gave me the ick real fast.

When Carmela starts receiving threatening notes, an investigator named Anders is brought in to help but here’s the twist: she meets him before knowing who he is, and the two share one insanely steamy night together. 👀 The next day? Surprise! He’s that investigator, and when he finds out what she does for a living, he immediately judges her, calling her a prostitute and insisting he’s “not into that type of woman.” Cue my rage and my obsession.

From there, it’s enemies-to-lovers tension at its finest. Anders starts off as a total ass, but honestly… there’s just something about a man who falls hard once he realizes the woman he underestimated is everything he never knew he needed. The chemistry? Explosive. The twists? Didn’t see them coming. I was absolutely rooting for these two the entire time. Carmela’s fiery, fierce personality paired with Anders’ commanding presence made every scene feel like a power play and I ate it up.

This audiobook was perfection. This was my first time listening to Janine Granda, and she nailed Carmela’s Latina accent and attitude. She brought out every layer of fire, sass, and vulnerability in her performance. And Robert Hatchet? That man never disappoints. His tone fit Anders perfectly authoritative, confident, and undeniably sexy. Together, their duet chemistry was phenomenal.

Play With Me by D.L. Darby
Performed in Duet by Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet

Anders is brought out from California to protect Carmela when her life is threatened, dragging him into a high-stakes protection detail in New York. What follows is a gritty enemies-to-lovers journey with fake relationship tension, explosive chemistry, and nonstop passion.

This story delivers tension, suspense, and spice in all the best ways. Carmela and Anders come out swinging—Anders’ harsh, clipped remarks meet Carmela’s unbothered boss-babe resilience head on. She’s been through hell and keeps pushing forward. Anders has battled his own past and carries the hard edges that come with a life in law enforcement. The tension between them is thick enough to cut, and watching that evolve into undeniable passion is oh-so-satisfying. The road to love is rough, but the payoff is worth every moment.

Janine Granda absolutely nails Carmela’s energy, balancing her fierce exterior with moments of vulnerability that hit just right. Her range in tone and delivery brings every emotional beat to life, and her character distinction is sharp and immersive.

This was my first audiobook with Robert Hatchet, and wow—what an introduction. He captures Anders’ gruff, abrasive nature so well that I questioned if I’d even like him… only to end up completely won over. He morphs that hardness into a dominant but deeply matched energy for Carmela that made their dynamic electric. Bravo, sir!

Even without listening to the previous books, I never felt lost—this story stands strong on its own. The spice, the hate, the tenderness, the love—it all hit perfectly.
⭐️ 5/5—Highly recommend!

navigating a chess match of desire, power, and unexpected checkmates

Reading Play with Me felt like being in the middle of a high-stakes chess match. Every move between Carmela and Anders was calculated, filled with tension, and had me on the edge of my seat. Carmela is the queen on the board—powerful, elusive, and always a few steps ahead.

Anders, the detective, is like a knight, moving in unexpected ways, challenging her defenses, and constantly surprising her. Their interactions are like watching a chess game unfold, where each character is trying to outwit the other, while both are deeply vulnerable at the core.

The beauty of this book is that every chapter felt like advancing to a new level of the game—sometimes a defensive play, other times a bold attack. The sexual tension between them is the opening gambit, but as the story progresses, the stakes get higher, and emotions run deeper, turning this into more than just a game of power and control. It’s about trust, sacrifice, and knowing when to protect your king—or queen—and when to let your guard down.

By the end, Play with Me left me feeling like I’d just experienced a masterful endgame—one with unexpected twists and checkmates that I didn’t see coming.

DL Darby truly knows how to craft a story full of suspense, seduction, and strategy and this series is an all ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me for sure! And with that said am honestly psyched up waiting for “DIE WITH ME” which is coming out on October 25th Yeeeeeeeey!!💃💃

Camela is a successful business woman who runs a resturant called Decadence and an underground exclusive sex club called Desierer.
When she was 19 she got involved with an older man named Mick. Turns out that he was secretly engaged to a woman he didn't want to marry but had to.
Someone has been leaving letters and dead roses for her all warning her against something, if only they could figure it out. There are also bodies dropping everytime a letter appears. Mick is now a powerful senator and still has a hold on Carmela - For her safety; He hires a detective from California. A night before they're due to meet with the detective, Carmela meets Anders in a bar and decides to follow her and hops into her cab as it's leaving.... They sleep together, however, the next morning when they all meet at the police station to get things set up for security and trying to keep Carmela safe; nothing is said about the previous nights activities. Over the next few weeks; they get to know each other and have a push/pull relationship - each trying to deny they want the other. It is during this case that Anders finds out that Carmela has a 14 year old daughter who lives outside the city of NY. She warms up to Anders very fast.

Reading this you'll feel every possible emotion; laughter, irritation, fright, intrigue, love and warmth. This has been an amazing reading experience for me and I cannot recommend Play with Me enough!! this is a must read!!

Feisty, badass FMC? ✅
Dirty talking, swoony MMC? ✅
Plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish? ✅✅
Top tier narration that you can listen to over and over again? ✅✅✅

I will not stop talking about this book or this series for the foreseeable future, because I am a woman OBSESSED!! DL Darby’ writing is incredible! The way she made this story so intriguing that I didn’t want to put it down, while simultaneously adding some of the filthiest dirty talk from both characters made absolutely giddy throughout this listen! Look up “baddie” in the dictionary, and there is a picture of Cara, woman is a Queen and takes zero shit from anyone. Anders is probably the only person who can rival Cara in quick comebacks aimed perfectly at their marks and I love that neither of them ever backs down.

Let me make myself so very clear when I reiterate how top tier the narration of this book was, I was utterly speechless! This is my first listen with Janine Granda but she has instantly shot her way to my “will never skip an audiobook she’s in” list. Her ability to deliver Cara’s sassy jabs with perfect timing and tone was flawless. Robert Hatchet once again proves that he can do no wrong in my ears. His performance as Anders constantly had my jaw dropping!

Play With Me is the third audiobook in D. L. Darby’s fantastic Angels of Désirer dark romance series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every audiobook in this series, but this just might be my favorite so far. Carmela has been this enigmatic figure in the background of the first two books in the series, so I was thrilled to finally get her story. And what a story it was! We had been told a little about her affair with the senator in previous books, so I was expecting this story to be about them. What I was not expecting was the brash and sexy detective, Anders, to come in and upend everything I thought would happen in this story. And while we do get the full details of Carmela and the senator’s relationship, the true love story is between her and Anders, although it’s certainly not an easy romance. Carmela is being threatened and some of her clients are being unalived, so the senator brings in Anders to solve the case and protect Carmela. They have an instant connection that leads to a very hot one-night-stand before they officially meet for the case. Anders has some pretty strong biases about Carmela’s profession based on his last case, so despite his attraction to her, he fights any kind of relationship. He soon finds he’s mistaken about her, though, and his feelings are too strong to ignore. Carmela is just as attracted to him but refuses to be looked down on or demeaned. She is a fiery force to be reckoned with, and Anders is no match for her. I loved every minute of this story! There was romance, intrigue, action, witty banter, a kick-a$$ heroine, an alpha MC, and the spiciest of spice—basically dark romance catnip. And I cannot wait for even more in book four!

Janine Granda and Robert Hatchet knocked this story’s duet-style narration right out of the park! Both completely embodied their characters and brought so much passion and emotion to their performances that I was hanging on every word. They brought D.L Darby’s amazing writing to life so beautifully and so completely that there’s no way for this audiobook to be anything other than an absolute can’t-miss title for any fan of dark romance audio!

Play With Me
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
D.L. Darby

This is the third book in this series and while I have loved each of them so far I think this one is my favorite. While the series characters are interconnected you could probably read this and be fine but if you can read the other two first you’ll understand the characters more quickly and well the books are just so good - why wouldn’t you?

This is the story of Carmela and Mick who first meet back when Carmela was young and innocent and Mick took her innocence but then told her he needed to marry someone else in an arranged marriage situation and Carmela was given a house and eventually took over the club Desirer which is a smexx club.

Then the story jumps ahead and someone is leaving roses and letters with nursery rhymes for Carmela and a couple of murders also seem to be connected.

As you can see this is dark romance but with suspense woven in as well as mafia ties, politicians and so much more.

I loved Carmela’s story though as we start with her falling for Mick, going through heartbreak but through this becoming a strong, independent woman who runs a successful business and so much more.

I don’t want to give more away but D.L. Darby created this incredible series! I can’t wait for the next book!

I am so glad this book focused on the Madam or Desiré. It was nice to get the real background of the club as well as insight into what made her tick. The lovers to enemies to lovers was an interesting trope and I love the way DL made it play out. These characters were complex and they mystery behind who was offing the men and leaving menacing notes for Cara provided a great storyline with plenty of twists and turns. Janine is a narrator I want to hear so much more from. She was great and her accent was perfect. Robert is always fun to listen to and I love the range of characters he is able to portray. This is an amazing series and definitely one you will want to sink your teeth into.
Narration: Full cast, duet narration, first-person present tense, multiple-POV

Tropes: Dark, k!nk club, mistress, secrets, threats, politico, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, ‘Mine’, someone is trying to unalive her, detective, NY/Jersey and Cali, ex is still in the picture,

Overall: 4.5
Spice: 3.5
Humor: 2.5
Drama: 3.5
Darkness: 3.5
Narration: 5

Cara is the Madam of Désirer as well as several restaurants (we met her in Burn with Me - book 1). Someone is leaving her threatening messages as well as unalived men, and the k!ller is too close to home, so her business partner and ex-lover hires a detective to solve this mystery.

Anders(on) has been flown in all the way from Cali to help solve the murders that keep happening around Désirer, but he keeps getting distracted by the beautiful Madam.

The two have a love hate relationship that eventually tips over into love, and pasta that keep their hearts guarded. When the k!iller gets closer, Anders does everything possible to keep Cara safe. When the truths long since buried come to light, will the two be able to overcome their fears, or will their second chance at a HEA go up in smoke?

This book was full of surprises I was not expecting. We meet Carmela in the previous books of the series and loved her big boss lady vibes and she brought all that and more here.

There is so much I want to say but I don’t want to spoil anything. I didn’t read any reviews before diving in so just the knowledge of the previous books and characters and I am glad I did. Darby did a great job of making me think one thing but giving me something else in all the best ways. I will say the power struggle between the characters was great. This is a standalone but I feel like to get a better reading experience they should be read in order since the characters from the series all connect throughout the series.

The audiobook was wow. I loved Janine Granda voice as Carmela she totally brought her boss lady vibes. Robert Hatchet did a great job as well. Amazing overall narrator performance.
