The thrilling sequel to War Heart (Book 1 of The Five Furies)!
Rejoin Kilek and his friends as they continue their quest to awaken long-lost dragons, learn to use their gifts and come to terms with being thrust into adulthood – if they can.
Yet stopping the hordes of giant insects isn’t going to be easy. Not with new Surrogates and fresh doubts hounding them every step of the way. For despite their progress, fractures within the group of young heroes have grown, and even betrayal begins to seem possible.
Worst of all, when Kilek finally learns exactly what the Goddess gave him – her gift comes with a terrible price that might just end up costing him the lives of his friends…
Ashley is a poet, novelist and ex-teacher living in Australia.
He taught English, Media and Music Production, played in a metal band, worked in an art gallery and slaved away at music retail. (For a few years, he was also a legal secretary).
Aside from reading and writing, Ashley loves volleyball, Studio Ghibli and Magnum PI.
As Kilek and his friends, Mathila, Paxoph, Tyar and Alira continued their quest to find the dragons, who were destined to help them if they proved their worth, Kilek wondered at the magic which would transform him; the magic gift the Goddess Avendria had given him. With the mage Florique helping them part of the way, they all were unsure of the trust they felt toward the mage; or lack of. The closer they came to the dragons, the more wary they became - and the more concerned about the Cabeku; the insects of various sizes that could kill easily, their poisonous ichor not to be touched.
When they finally met Sparkena, the dragon was huge, but friendly. Their journeys on his scaly back were thrilling and terrifying, plus his ability to communicate with Kilek nothing short of amazing. But danger was closer than they realised. Would they achieve their goal? And would Kilek be able to control himself when his gift took over his body?
Scales of Fire is the 2nd in The Five Furies series by Aussie author Ashley Capes and it was another exceptional read. I loved the first in the series, and it was good to catch up with Kilek and his friends as they continued their magical, dangerous and remarkable journey. I'm looking forward to #3 hopefully soon! Recommended.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read & review.
I like the characters and the adventure, the dragon is likeable. The writing style, especially the evocative descriptions of landscape and the humor of the author are great. Some supernatural abilities are nice, but I never really liked wizards even those with so called white magic. Nowadays I feel uneasy about magic, the bible says we should keep away from it.
