Recently reread this event in story order starting with New Avengers #23 and Avengers #39 along my collection of tie ins and events including the last days of Silk, Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, Black Widow, Loki: Agent of Asgard, Captain America and the Might Avengers, Punisher, and Silver Surfer. Really enjoy those leads ins to the main event, especially the Avengers vs New Avengers vs Cabal. Included Battleword, Secret Wars Journal, Old Man Logan, Spider-Verse, Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars 2099, Renew your Vows, Thors, Spider-Island, Captain britain and the mighty Defenders, Civil War, and Ultimate End to complete the set. Such a great event bringing together a great central plot and art in the main run combined with countless variants and excellent mini-series happening across Battleworld. Trying to create a movie version of this is audacious, we'll see if the MCU can stick the landing but this is a great read and I recommend it to anyone who loves Marvel or comics generally. You can also just read the main run and this omnibus is a serviceable collection of fun stories. To get the whole story though, you must go deeper!

An absolute epic.I don’t use epic lightly. An amazing marvel story with the best hero’s and the best villains…. And then there’s DOOM. One of my fav marvel stories. Took me a bit to know a couple of the characters as I didn’t read the events leading up to secret wars… sorry! But all in all an amazing experience. Highly recommend to any marvel fan out there getting into comics who love the movies!

Hickman does it again! (or maybe for the first time? This precedes Krakoa, in which I am better versed).
Hickman's usual style of weaving multiple different micronarratives amongst one another in pursuit of a larger arc finds success in Secret Wars, but, admittedly, less compellingly than in his later work. What I love about his type of storytelling is how neurotic it is, leaving no (or very few) stones unturned, which works especially well in the sort of "Everyone is Here" and "Everyone is Dead" narrative that occurs here. "Where is the Pheonix?" It's right here. "What about (the) infinity stones?" Ta-da. Often, one finds that questions they didn't know they had answered. But whereas Krakoa gives the space for these questions to resolve over multiple issues, sometimes entire series, in Secret Wars they sometimes suffer from only a few panels of exploration.
Generally, pacing was the largest issue with this event. Hickman doesn't pull punches with lore, and even as it is clearly fleshed out for him (and in paratexts and parallel issues or tie-ins to the event), often a scene leaves one with more questions than answers, or concludes/introduces things unsatisfactorily. Battleworld is such a cool concept to only feature a few of its territories/principalities across an event of this scale and when groups like the Hulk army appear out of nowhere the world feeling more real and unpredictable comes at the expense of narrative coherency. But this is a minor gripe, to be frank.
Fantastic art as well, some of the splash panels will live in my head rent free for a while. Especially God Emperor Doom eviscerating his heretics...

Nuts.
It reminds me both of Brandon Sanderson's final few chapters of his biggest novels, and also of the recent Absolute Batman universe. They take characters you know and love, and find truly incredible and unique ways to use them to forward a story with a ridiculous amount of stakes.
If you're getting ready for Doomsday in December, this really is essential. If you have any doubts about RDJ being back (the only other answer I'll accept is if Adam Driver had played Doom), this will clear them. Really, I think it will. This particular comic is what Avengers Secret Wars, coming out in 2027, is inspired by.
The Fantastic 4 shine specifically, and so does Doctor Strange. It reminds me of watching Endgame, but the comic version, but the FF version. I wholly recommend the series for anyone who enjoys event comics, enjoys the Fantastic Four, enjoys superheroes.

alright this is a masterpiece in my opinion.
This collects the final chapters of the avengers and new avengers runs leading up to the final incursion between the 616 and the ultimate universe and immediately picks up with the secret wars storyline, which was my favorite (I read it in 2 sittings cuz it was so good)
I LOVED the characterization of Dr Doom here and his transition into God Doom is so fucking cool man it gets me really excited with all the possibilities of what they can adapt when they do the Doomsday and Secret Wars films.

My one comic per year, this time Hickman’s Secret Wars. By complete chance, the same guy who wrote my one-comic last year, House of X/Powers of X. I enjoyed this quite a bit. Read to prepare for Avengers: Doomsday which I probably will not see til it comes out on streaming; I’m not excited for the film. . .

I love Hickman’s Avenegrs run. And Secret Wars is no exception. However I have issues with how this omnibus is mapped. Secret Wars (9 issues worth of content) should have just been added on to Hickman’s Avengers Omnibus Vol 2. Especially considering this massively double dips with the content found in that Omni.

The culmination of hundreds of issues of comics, I enjoy Jonathan Hickman's Marvel comics because they feel less like a conventional superhero narrative and more like a science fiction story that could be a prestige television series. Secret Wars is a crazy spectacle meant to reward long time Marvel Comics nerds and it delivers.

Didn’t realize this collects Avengers and New Avengers as well… that’s a lot of books so I’m logging it lol. Just an amazing story. Love everything in the build up before Secret Wars more than the event honestly. Avengers/New Avengers is fantastic. I have no fucking idea how the MCU is going to do Secret Wars justice without any of the build up those comics built and it makes me very worried.

It was a little confusing and complicated, but that was because of the fact that this was my first comic run, but I still had a lot of fun and got to love Dr. Doom (the panel with Thanos will stay in my head forever like holy fuck). I love that it contains so many characters and not necessarily those you knew much about as a mcu fan that I was before. I recommend reading this!!

I love Secret Wars, 10 years later and it’s all erased but I remember… I first read this as it was coming out on a pirating site. It was the first big Marvel event I read as it was releasing, and I don’t think I fully understood what exactly was going on, I enjoyed it though. I like it a lot more knowing the full context that led up to it.
I actually like the lead up to Battleworld a lot more than the thing itself, but there are some truly fantastic moments here and there. Makes me want to read more of the Battleworld books but I’d need to have a physical copy and the Battleworld omnibus is just not worth it to me. Maybe someday.
